Prowling through the Stacks | author’s note

I have wonderful memories of my hometown public library. The library in Davis, California, where I grew up wasn’t especially big or showy. It’s not an especially big town, and while the University library is both very extensive and very impressive, the local library was just an odd little building next door to the Veterans’ Memorial Theatre, where my I performed in ballet recitals, attended a summer theatre program and went to dances and events. They’ve since rebuilt the Davis branch twice, i...

STRANGERS ON THIS ROAD | new promo for book 1!

I jumped on the fun promo bandwagon and created this short video for the first book in the series. I loved timing it to the music, which is an original, beautiful piece by Erik Hanson, “For You,” performed by his band the Stragglers. Erik will be providing the soundtracks to all coming videos, and promises not to sue me.

Hope you enjoy!

Digging up the Past

In my latest book, Beneath These Streets, coming out later this year on Kindle, I had the chance to draw on a really cool part of history: San Francisco’s buried ships.

San Francisco Behind the Golden Gate BridgeThere are ships lying deep under the streets of San Francisco. I’m not talking about fishing boats or small crafts, but actual seagoing 19th century ships that docked in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Harbor during the Gold Rush.

So you may be wondering: how did a bunch of huge sailing vessels end up under the city streets? They we...

Yay for Spring!

Colorful flowers in clay flowerpots hanging on wall of building in Cordoba, SpainSpringtime! It’s finally here – warm days and cool nights, budding green leaves on every tree, allergies and bright flowers and the irrepressible urge to garden. (I only have plants in pots, but I gardened the heck out of them last weekend. You can pretend this pretty clip art picture is my handiwork.)

In celebration of the season, Book 3, Enemy at the Wedding, will be free for Kindle on March 30 and 31. Spend the $3 you’re saving on a frosty iced latte, as you relax on the sunny patio of your...

In memory of my first novel | author’s note

Just this week I went back to look at my first novel, which I hadn’t touched for a few years. This isn’t the first book in my series, Strangers on This Road, but a sentimental story called Since I Met You about a girl and a movie star. I like parts of it a lot. I feel like the writing could be stronger in many places, and it isn’t all that original a plot. But the characters are interesting, they interact well, and I enjoyed writing it and rewriting it so much that it will always have a speci...

READER POLL: Sometimes I kinda miss “Reading Rainbow”

reading-rainbow-2It’s a crazy time for fiction readers, with new books coming out daily in every genre through all kinds of publishing mediums. With so many options available and a never-ending appetite for escapist reading, I can get pretty overwhelmed by looking for new books to read. Long, long gone are the days when my mom would order the latest “Sweet Valley High” for me from the Scholastic Book Fair, or I’d prowl through the library for hours to choose one likely title. My tastes developed over the year...
