Errors & Inspiration | author’s note

My day job has been especially stressful lately, what with department mergers, new bosses, urgent deadlines, and changing rules and roles and expectations. Maybe because of that, or maybe because I just needed some time away from it, I haven’t returned to work on the second draft of my latest novel.

It’s there, waiting for me, detailed and thoughtful notes from my editor flagged for my reference, my own notes set aside. One day very soon, I’ll be ready to open the file and start on it again....

A New Direction | author’s note

Just this past Wednesday, I finished writing my latest novel. I’ve talked before about what a high it is to finish, and this week that was an especial treat, since my day job threw some interesting (code for “yucky and upsetting”) curve balls my way. Day jobs have a tendency to do that, and it always helps a lot to focus instead on the things that matter most to me, over any work drama—my family, pets, friends, blessings and creative work.

This latest book represents a slightly new direction,...

“Also, I hope to be writing a few books” | author’s note

This past weekend, I spent some time going through bins full of old papers, a mess of things that included elementary school projects, photo albums, college essays and design work from my late 20s. A lot of it could be tossed, some I reorganized and stored until the next time I decide to go through it.

One lovingly preserved file organizer held a mess of writing and drawings from my childhood: illustrated books I created, plays I wrote with my cousins, collages of colorful pictures, folios fu...

The Characters in a Series | author’s note

One of my favorite things about writing a series is the fact that characters can come and go throughout, even as I have the opportunity to create new people. I begin each book with an idea of the story I want to tell, and from there the characters either introduce themselves or step forward out of the past, or both. Sometimes I know that I want to continue to tell a certain heroine’s story, other times the story involves someone entirely new. And yet I always like to connect them, in some way...

The Definition of Success | author’s note

I’m about a third of the way through writing my next novel, with a rough outline of the rest of the plot. As always, some days it’s much easier to get into the creative groove than others, but I continue to open up the file and plug away. If I don’t write, then I edit, or research, or put it aside and daydream—but the goal is always to get words on screen, as many as possible in one sitting.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about what it means to be a successful author. In a change from my usual...
