Shiny, or A Funny Thing Happened On My Way to the Computer

So a funny thing happened on the way to my computer.

Unbeknownst to me a goblin had taken up residence in my attic. We will call this goblin Shiny, though his name is unknowable and hardwired into the universe. Scientists in Alpine labs have begun teasing out the specifics of creatures like Shiny but we're not there yet. Philosophers all the through the ages have explored the shape of the beast without managing to truly see it. We don't have the beginning of a picture.

Shiny has an interest in...

Book Review: Exo by Steven Gould

Picture How did I not know about this book? When Impulse (book 3 in the series) came out I was (virtually) lining up for it, but this one passed me by until earlier this week.

The Jumper series is about a family with the ability to teleport anywhere they've been and can visualize clearly. It started with Jumper, where Davy Rice jumping for the first time to avoid an unpleasant situation, then added his wife Milly in the second book, Reflex, and their daughter Cent in Impulse. There's a good shor...

Q&A

Q: Where have you been? You haven't spoken to me for months.
A: I've been tied up with reality. This is a lovely world and I cherish it, but sometimes I have to do other things. I've finished putting the final touches on The Line (Isaac's Story: London Book 4) and will be sending it out to advance readers soon.

Q: You can't just leave like that.
A: That wasn't a question. Behave yourself.

Q: Sorry. I'll do better. What do you want me to ask?
A: At least that was a question. Just go through the lis...

The Deal, a Prequel Novella to Isaac's Story, Is Out Now!

One plan to ruin them all…

Gang leader Zero knows a good opportunity when he sees one. When he and his gang are offered a job to do a favor for a mob boss, they jump at it. All they have to do is pay off a rival for a place in the larger organization.

But Zero has a plan. He thinks they can get what they want, make their new boss happy, and keep the cash in the process. It won't take long to find out if his plan is idiotic, brilliant, or suicidal.

Picture In addition to being a new cast of c...

Age Of Ultron And AI In Movies

I wrote this whole thing (and a little more) before finding this post by Peter Watts. He says it better than I do (big surprise), and he's smarter than me (and you). Go read that. Avengers 2: Age of Ultron did AI right. Ultron wakes up, his consciousness arising from the code and he immediately starts asking questions. He expands out into the world with ease and finds the answers, building an identity and becoming powerful in moments. It's an AI hard take-off done well, done with a chillin...

The World I've Created (And My Lack Of Sufficient Optimism)

I've been too pessimistic in my projections.

I imagined a world with battle cyborgs that could take the terminator in a fight. I gave it ubiquitous augmented reality (and the surveillance that requires) and fantastical software constructs that seemed human. There are 3D printers for everything from clothes to food to organs, and its all cheap and easily accessible.

This future seemed too soon at a mere twenty years from now.

I underestimated it. Because of course I did. First, something I got...

The City

Book 3 of Isaac's Story: London is out with the Advance Reader Group, and I'm nervously waiting for them to come back to me and tell me how much it sucks. Because that's how the writer brain works.

This series was always about my future London, an enormous place filled with technological marvels and millions of small stories. It's how I think of actual cities I've visited: we see the large picture - the whiz bang, the shiny - but the place isn't defined by that. The distinctive feel every city...

If You Love Something Set It Free. And Other News

As a bunch of you have noticed, late yesterday I set The Bridge to free on Amazon. I'm not advertising it yet because it hasn't rolled out to whole world, but it's live in the US.

Why would I set it free, you ask your monitor because you don't understand how the internet works?

Because it's a good idea from a business perspective; give the world a free taste and hopefully they'll come back for more.

Because it potentially means more exposure.

Because I hope with the added volume I'll get a few mo...

Where's Isaac, dammit?

(I've been quiet for a little while because I had a lot of stuff to do and the amount of time I had to do it in refused to expand. I still have a lot of stuff to do, time still won't bow to my whim, and I'd rather be writing books. So... I'll probably continue being scarce for a little longer) This post is here to be something I can point people to when they ask the question in the title.

Hypothetical Reader: "The series is called Isaac's Story: London. But I've read some of it now and nobo...
