Different Heroes

I think I was worried about who to pick for the hero of The Algorithm. If I was reading a series and I was invested in the characters and the world, would I be alright with my heroes from the first book not being in the second book? Even if there are other characters that carry over, will the lack of a familiar headspace be a problem?

For Isaac’s Story: London I decided to have different protagonists in every book. They exist in the same world and they run across some of the same larger-than-l...

Openings: Dead Men Episode 2

Here's the opening for Dead Men Episode 2.

I'll do a non-Dead Men opening next week, but I've got Episode 6 on the brain right now. Enjoy.

Click Read More to...read more.
Chapter 1

West waited in the shadows, feeling ridiculous and angry. It wasn’t a good combination. The feelings fed off each other, magnifying each other in a feedback loop that was going to end with someone getting a smack in the head.

Greg’s room was cleaner than her own, though given the state of her place that shouldn’t...

New Release: The Algorithm

Picture Book 2 of Isaac’s Story: London has appeared, like a genie from a well-rubbed lamp. A thing of immense power, yet fragile and helpless in your hands. Its fate is yours to decide, for good or ill.

Or something.

The Algorithm is about a guy called Jon, who is hired to try and steal data from Wednesday Minds, the largest company in the world and the creators of the digital minds that run everything. He does this and is very happy, until a mad man turns up and starts hunting him that n...

Goals

I have a plan for the rest of this year. It’s a simple plan to tell you about, to put into words and to understand. I can show you the framework of the plan and present how I’m going to achieve it, but actually doing it…that’s a bitch.

By the middle of December this year I want to have released all five books of the Isaac’s Story: London series. I want to have the first book of the next series (Isaac’s Story: Hong Kong) more or less ready to go for January. I want to have completed Season 1 of...

Openings: Dead Men Episode 1

Here's another opening. This time it's the first chapter of the first episode of Dead Men.

Enjoy Chapter 1

West eyed the dry, cracked dirt outside the car warily. The temperature outside the air-conditioning was nearing forty degrees Celsius and predicted to rise, and she didn’t handle heat well.

‘We going in or what?’ Chris said as he put his hand on the keys to turn off the Jeep. West’s hand shot out involuntarily and stopped him. The car was old – a beat-up 2016 model – but the AC still...

New Serial Release: Dead Men 5

Picture I’m pleased to announce the release of Dead Men: Episode 5. (Also a belated notice on the release of Dead Men: Episode 4, two weeks ago)

This episode sees the company helping Maddy Green’s mother. She’s being abused and she wants out, so the team put together a plan and get to work. Things go wrong, of course.

There’s a basic plan anyone can use when writing any kind of fiction, but (in my opinion) especially thrillers and action/adventure books. Take your hero and chase them up...

Openings: When the Gods Wish To Punish

I've seen a few people do this and I liked the idea, so I'm stealing it.

I'm going to post the opening of a novel/novella/episode periodically, starting with the stuff that's already out there in the world and moving on to works in progress when I've run out.

This is more for my own amusement than anyone else, but I hope you enjoy.

The Eighties

I think I need to tell you about Dean’s escape, before I forget it all. I can feel the fog drifting through my mind as time goes by, eroding the edge...

Why I Do What I Do

I started writing a fantasy novel a few years ago, powering through the awkward beginning, learning who the characters were and just how brutal the world was, and enjoying every minute. I wrote about fifty-thousand words before a different idea smacked me in the head and I went and wrote that instead.

I don't live in the same world as the people around me. Most of the time I'm lost in a plot, a movie playing out behind my eyelids just for me. This isn't strange, I know. We all have interior li...

Planet of the Apes and a harbinger of the end times

Picture I watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes today, and I saw a true image of the definite end of civilization. Really.

First, a quick review.

Great film, taking a well-used end-of-the-world plot and putting talking apes into it.

If I had to go further, I’d say that the film focusses where it should, on the apes. The humans are there as a maguffin, a thing to get the ape civilisation changing from the idyllic to the complex. From Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, to Adam and E...

New Serial Release: Dead Men 3

Picture Here we go again.

West being impulsive and violent. Guns, grenades, helicopters, drones, soldiers and auto turrets. Warlords, prisoners, rich girls and guards. Explosions, gunshot wounds and fear.

Or as West would call it, Tuesday.

I might do an actual post on this after the weekend. I've got a bunch of new people visiting the site (Hey, how are you doing?) so I thought I should put something up. This is that something.

I've got books to write though, so I'm going to go do that.
