Jadel's gift - Snippet from JUPITER for #WeWriWa

I’m still running snippets from Jupiter, Book 3 in Taxyon Space. Soon, I hope to switch to my WIP, Book 3 in Atrapako on Eden. Prime Jadel has set Nikki and Kiron the task of clearing the hyperroute between Rishalt and Europa. She foresees they will succeed in this task. Please excuse my misuse of semicolons to fit 10 sentences.
Kiron glanced at Nikki for confirmation; his eyes widened in a smile, and he caught hold of her hand. Turning to Jadel, he said, “Urish, we will serve you as the Ramis Bell duad.” “Your union has my blessing, and I have a special gift,” she pursed her pale lips in a low whistle. A patter of paws heralded a new arrival, a small luma with blue-gray fur and a streak of white along its spine. It bounded to Nikki and rose on its hind paws to sniff at her fingers. It wore a pearl-white collar with a central zigzag line of silver and a triangle of tiny diamonds on the top. “This young luma is your gift,” Jadel sang.  “What a brilliant gift,” Nikki laughed in genuine delight. Kiron bent down to offer his hand to the young luma; it scrabbled its paws on his legs. He caught the luma in his arms and hugged it to his chest where it clung to his jacket and licked his chin.

I’ve skipped a few lines – it’s in Nikki’s POV.[Slightly edited to fit] Jadel said, “The hyperthreads passing through your Earther system have become distorted. The nexus must be stabilized, or else we shall lose the ability to travel between our planets.” Styx, were they marooned on Rishalt and separated from humankind forever? Nikki pressed her fingers on her lips to stifle a gasp of dismay. His gaze still locked on Jadel’s face, Kiron caressed Nikki’s hand unobtrusively, “Gracious Prime, where is the nexus located?” Focusing on his sincere face, Jadel said, “You, as an ex-Watcher, should know; the nexus lies within the stormy gas planet called Jupiter.” Fighting off her terror of being isolated, Nikki asked, “What do you wish of us?”“The pair of you, the Ramis Bell duad, will travel to this Earther planet to unravel the knot and clear the hyper-routes.” Kiron bowed and gave the traditional response, “Gracious Prime, I hear and obey.” “How will we recognize the aberrant factor?” Nikki asked.

I’m back after a week’s vacation on the Gulf Shores to run another snippet from Jupiter, Book 3 in Taxyon Space. Nikki and Kiron have been summoned by Prime Jadel. I’ve skipped a few lines to where Nikki and Kiron meet Jadel. Please excuse slightly modified punctuation. The Prime perched on the low wall around the pond. She wore a dress of lilac satin embroidered with silver spirals and a tight bodice laced over her two pairs of breasts. Her flawless, green complexion had an unearthly beauty, emphasized by the triangle of three diamonds embedded on her right cheek; a mesh cap of pearls bound in silver spirals crowned her bald head. Her gaze was inscrutable. Immediately, Kiron knelt and bent his head to touch the floor in the traditional obeisance; he murmured, “Gracious Prime, your humble servant, Kiron Ramis Bell.” In Nikki’s opinion, he performed the ritual with unnecessary enthusiasm; lagging by a reluctant half-minute, she prostrated herself in a similar fashion, and quickly raised her head to intone the greeting. In Warrish perspective, she was an inferior human, an alien Earther, yet she refused to give total obedience to the Primes. Perhaps Kiron owed a greater debt to Tol-Jadel; the Prime had released him from his family obligations in a manner that retained his honor and even endowed him with higher status by her silver mark on his cheek. In a voice as musical as a songbird’s warble, Jadel trilled, “Ramis Bell Duad, prompt to my command and favored by my luma.” She pointed at a stack of cushions tucked under the arching fern fronds; “Sit before me.”

A trio of luma - snippet from JUPITER for #WeWriWa #SciFi

I’m back after Thanksgiving to run another snippet from Jupiter, Book 3 in Taxyon Space. Nikki is recording the marine life when Kiron gets a message from their hostess, Sora. I’ve skipped again to the scene where an attendant is taking Nikki and Kiron to their audience with Tol-Jadel. Excuse my minor misuse of punctuation to fit.
A trio of luma, otter-like animals with sleek gray fur and flat scaled tails, scampered out of the natatorium and ran to rub their flanks against Nikki’s bare ankles. Like all Rishalt’s vertebrate animals, they were truly amphibious with gills as well as lungs. The three luma sniffed at Kiron, and the largest one rose on its hind legs to paw at his hand. He smiled and scratched the fur behind its small ears. “I think they like you,” Nikki whispered. The attendant opened the gates and beckoned, “Enter. Supreme Tol-Jadel awaits you in her garden.” Bright light flooded the exit, and a warm breeze wafted a fragrant medley of flowers and herbs into the cool interior space.The luma circled around their feet, herding them in the correct direction. As they walked toward the light, Kiron grasped her hand again. Stepping through the gates, Nikki blinked, half blinded by the sunlight.

I’m back after Thanksgiving to run another snippet from Jupiter, Book 3 in Taxyon Space. Nikki is recording the marine life when Kiron gets a message from their hostess, Sora. Smiling at Sora, Nikki said, “We came quickly, and we’re torn with curiosity.” “Haste is needed; Prime Jadel has summoned you,” Sora’s gaze flicked from Nikki’s face to Kiron’s, “both of you, to an audience in the ninth level of the Pearl Pyramid.”   “An audience with Tol-Jadel?” Nikki breathed. As First in the Prime triad, Jadel stood at the pinnacle of the hierarchical Warrish society. A smile flashed over Sora’s olive-green face, “My exalted mother.” “Sora, can’t you give us a hint of the Prime’s reason for recalling us to Pucklerakt?” In her blunt manner, Sora said, “No clue has come to my ears; I swim clear of politics.” “As we do, by preference,” Nikki agreed. “Whatever Tol-Jadel wants of us, I cannot agree to act against the interests of my people, the Earthers.” “Her goals are ever subtle; you may be unable to decide whether her demand will benefit Earthers or not.”
