Enemies lurk everywhere - Snippet from TRAPPED for #WeWriWa #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!
I’m continuing my new story, Trapped on Vkani, book 3 in my series Atrapako on Eden. The settings are two remote planets: Eden, a terraformed planet with a colony of humans; and Vkani, an inhospitable planet with scaled human(oid) aliens. You can read about the planets and their inhabitants in my Blog Post HERE.
Maya and her team had planned to explore the ruins of an ancient civilization in the radioactive Deadlands. But when a sandstorm buried their shuttle under a thick layer of sand, they had to dig to the surface to call for help. Maya was pulled out of the sand by a blue scaled alien with curved claws. Jack, who had led the way out, is lying on the ground near a massive Red Atrapako.
You can read last week’s snippet at https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/03/unnatural-sound-snippet-from-trapped.html I’ve skipped a few lines in which the Blue binds May’s wrists and orders the Red to pull her other teammates out of the sand dune.
Clambering awkwardly onto her feet, Maya stumbled over to where Jack lay. She stared at his motionless body in disbelief; his neck was twisted at an unnatural angle, and behind the goggles, his eyes were wide and blank. Choking back a cry of horror, she knelt and attempted to remove his glove to check for a pulse. With her wrists bound together, her clumsy efforts failed; obscured by the mask, tears streamed down her cheeks and she sobbed. Someone tapped her shoulder; she swung round in alarm. In a chilly tone, the Blue said, “Only a fool would attack a Red.” Her grief slid into rage; jumping to her feet, she balled her fists and spat an accusation, “You killed him!” “Enemies lurk everywhere.” After this dispassionate excuse, the Blue’s gaze flicked up and down her body, lingering on her face, “Was he your Blue?”
Another misunderstanding?

Marooned on a desolate planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope. Maya Pandita spent years preparing for an expedition to the Deadlands. But her dreams of unearthing ancient artifacts are shattered when her shuttle is buried by a violent sandstorm, and her team is abducted by the scaled inhabitants of the planet. Maya and her companions must try to outwit their blue captor and call for help before they die in the toxic atmosphere. Sa Vittaran has a problem in his claws. Along with treasures from the ruins, he has retrieved three smooth-skinned foreigners. They will die if he leaves them in the desert. He cannot leave them to die in the desert. Yet the puny creatures have little value as workers, except perhaps for the impudent woman who claims to be their leader. Her knowledge of the ancient script will be an asset if she can survive the long trek to his house. An attack by marauders forces Maya and the Blue leader into a wary alliance. They must work together to thwart the bandits and reunite their company. Can Maya convince Sa Vittaran to help her team? If she fails, they are doomed to a short unpleasant life on the desolate, war-torn planet.

Two Planets, Two Possible Futures for Humanity - Atrapako on Eden - #SciFi Adventure & Romance

My series, Atrapako on Eden, offers different scenarios for our future.
Earth/Terra is overcrowded, polluted and people rely on virtual entertainment.
EdenThe remote planet of Eden lies in a solar system near the edge of the galactic arms. Eden has two moons, called Mars and Venus. The planet has been terraformed and many native species from Terra were transplanted into large uninhabited regions. A colony of Terran-born humans live in the major city of Riverside and smaller rural communities. Society is supported by a high level of technology, although not overtly. The people enjoy festivals and a variety of “non-virtual” leisure activities. A small spaceport lies just outside Riverside for shuttles from rare visiting spaceships. The Space Traders visit every few years.
Book 1, The Lady is Blue, is set on Eden.
VkaniVkani’s solar system is partially obscured by a dust cloud. The planet has a single moon called the Red Child. The planet Vkani has a desolate environment and post-apocalyptic society. A thousand years ago, a nuclear catastrophe destroyed civilization and devastated the environment. Cities were buried under radioactive sand in extensive desert regions called the Deadlands. The humanoid survivors mutated, or possibly were engineered, to adapt to the new environment. Atrapako have protective scales and a rigid, color-coded society. Blues are the dominant caste, Greens are scientists and technologists. Reds are laborers and soldiers. All others, including children, are Yellows. During a brief technological renaissance about a hundred years ago, the Atrapako built spaceships to seek a more hospitable planet (see Book 1). Unfortunately, conditions on the planet haven’t improved since they left (see Books 2 & 3).
Book 2, Dragons of Vkani , has action on both planets. Amazon iBooks Kobo B&N GooglePlay PRINT
My latest addition to this series, Book 3, Trapped on Vkani, is set on Vkani Amazon Apple B&N Kobo GooglePlay

In last week’s snippet, Maya’s ungloved hand was being examined by the blue scaled hero of the story - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/03/give-me-proof-snippet-from-trapped-for.htmlIn fact, I had skipped a few lines for better continuity in these short snippets. Maya’s teammate Jack had preceded her to the surface of the sand. Before she answered the Blue, she had seen Jack’s body lying by a Red. Reds are the laborer caste and are massive, all muscles and rust-red scales, and never speak to other classes. [You can find a couple of noteable exceptions in the second Book in this series.] Please excuse minor misuse of punctuation to fit.
While her interrogator was examining her hand, she pointed at Jack; “Is my comrade injured?” “Your Green attacked my Red,” an ice-cold, implacable answer. She swallowed hard; was Jack dead? The beeps of an incoming call rang from Jack’s com. The Blue swung toward the unnatural sound and snapped an order. Instantly, the Red plucked the com from Jack’s belt and crushed it between clawed finger and thumb. “No,” Maya cried. Too late. The Blue merely scowled at her.

Marooned on a desolate planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope. Maya Pandita spent years preparing for an expedition to the Deadlands. In last week’s snippet, Maya was able to communicate with the blue scaled hero of the story - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/03/worm-snippet-from-trapped-for-wewriwa.html He (actually she doesn’t know its gender yet) doesn’t believe Maya comes from another world. The last sentence was: The Blue growled, “Impossible.” I’ve skipped a few lines.
Fixing her gaze on the Blue, she pointed at the ruddy clouds in the sky, and tried to explain, “Our world lies far beyond the moon, the Red Child.” The Blue rocked back onto its heels. The hood fell back, exposing its prominent brows of thick blue scales and tall crest of blue spikes. Its nose and mouth were covered by a strip of blue cloth. It lowered its ridged brows and narrowed its eyes as if considering her statement. Finally, it demanded, “Give me proof of your claim.” She couldn’t risk removing her mask in the dusty air. Instead, she unfastened one glove and revealed her brown hand without scales or claws. The Blue pressed the tip of one claw on her palm, creating a dimple, but not piercing her skin. It rotated her hand and tapped a claw on her fingernails.

Marooned on a desolate planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope. Maya Pandita spent years preparing for an expedition to the Deadlands. In last week’s snippet, Maya met the blue scaled hero of the story. You can read their dramatic first encounter here - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/02/large-blue-claws-snippet-from-trapped.html Excuse my misuse of punctuation as their interaction continues.
It barked a word, an incomprehensible command. Stretching a blue-scaled hand with clawed fingers toward her face, it gripped the neck of her mask. “No!” she cried, jerking into a sitting position and raising her flattened hand to stop it. Fear sharpened her memories of lessons in the Atrapako language, Kavkani, and she said in halting tones, “Need to breathe.” Not quite correct, but she couldn’t remember their word for nose filter, if such a term existed. Gripping the hilt of its sword, the Atrapako crouched on one knee at her side and grated, “Worm.” Its voice was as harsh and arid as the landscape of the Deadlands; “Worms crawling out of the dunes; what are you?” Mentally, she translated the accented Kavkani, and her confidence rose. Looking into the shadowed eyes, she said with improved fluency, “We are not Atrapako; we traveled from another place, a world far from Vkani.” The Blue growled, “Impossible.”

Marooned on a desolate planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope. Maya Pandita spent years preparing for an expedition to the Deadlands. #New - Hell Within Walking Distance by Liza O'Connor #Romance with a Touch of #Paranormal

Hell Within Walking Distance By Liza O’ConnorA Love Story With Paranormal Events This story takes place in 1980, when Hell’s Kitchen remained a dangerous place. As a young woman working in Manhattan, I was shocked how one block could make such a huge difference in your likelihood to survive. I traveled to NYC by train, so I had no option but to walk once I arrived at Penn Station. What I quickly learned was to stay far away from Hell’s Kitchen, for even in the early mornings it was NOT SAFE.
BlurbCara faints on a subway and dreams that she wakes in the arms of an adoring husband. This charming, caring man soon claims her heart. When she reawakens to her miserable life, the memory of her dream life gives her the courage to escape her tormentor. Newly discovered friends help her disappear by placing her in the household of a wealthy philanthropist who is determined to pull his beloved wife out of her coma. When Cara realizes the philanthropist is her dream husband, she concludes she is to blame for his wife’s coma. Cara is determined to do whatever it takes to return his wife’s soul to her body, even if it kills her. Amazon
ExcerptHe evidently sensed her growing ill will over their journey into hell. “I don’t know why you’re in a mood. I’m the one who was unable to buy the coin I wanted. However, if you have gotten us lost, I willbe the one who loses my temper.”God, she hated him! Maybe she should have taken the little Spanish guy up on his offer. Slavery and prostitution couldn’t be much worse than her current situation. Yes, she lived in a beautiful high rise, but other than geography, she didn’t see how her life was much better. She was a virtual slave, waiting for Damon to decide what she could or couldn’t do. The only ‘friends’ he permitted were the wives of his friends, and she could never get beyond their superficial surface to find a personality to befriend. He monitored her food intake and her exercising regime to ensure she maintained a pleasing body. He also selected her reading material. On occasion, he would send her to a class to ‘improve’ her. The results always disappointed him, and she would endure his lectures on her lack of ambition, talent, and fortitude for many weeks after. However, her most unforgivable sin was her birth in Hell’s Kitchen. He forbade her to tell a soul of her shameful heritage. He provided her a more acceptable history, which she dutifully told to any of the shallow people who pried into her life looking for weapons to use against him.“Forget your past,” he’d lectured her throughout their fifteen years of co-habitation. However, today, when he wanted a damn coin from a merchant in Hell’s Kitchen, she was suddenly expected not only to remember her past but become a ghetto tour guide. She sighed in relief as the subway hole came into view. She could tell by the rumbling of the sidewalk, the train was pulling in.“Shit, we are going to miss the train.” He took off running, leaving her behind. She tried to keep up, desperately tried. He never allowed her to carry money or have her own subway card, and she knew from prior experience, if it came between Damon catching the train or leaving her behind, he’d leave her in a second. He had done it before, but normally it was in Midtown where she could ask some kind looking gentleman for the cost of a token. There were no kind men on these streets.
About the AuthorLiza O’Connor has been writing books for most of her life. Only for the first ten years she didn’t show them to anyone. Then she joined a group called the Rom-critters and her she learned how to make her stories better. Liza has published over 50+ booksLiza writes fiction, but all her books have a bit of her life in them. As strange as it sounds, Hell Within Walking Distance has much of her life within the story. Liza is trying to publish a book a month, so more of her books can be published and read. Most of these books were written in her most creative years. But she is still writing new books as well. It just takes longer to write a new book, rather than to improve an already written book from her backlog. She also writes in many genres, including: Historical and Contemporary Romance, Sci-Fi, Paranormal, Modern Western, Fantasy, Ghost stories, Humor, and more. For a full listing, check out the back pages of one of her current year’s books.

Large Blue Claws - Snippet from TRAPPED for #WeWriWa #SciFiRom

I’m continuing my new story, Trapped on Vkani, book 3 in my series Atrapako on Eden. Maya and her team had planned to explore the ruins of an ancient civilization in the radioactive Deadlands. But a sandstorm buried their shuttle under a thick layer of sand. Their air supply is low, and they have to dig to the surface to call for help.
Last week’s snippet introduced the hero, who plans to loot the ancient ruins with his crew. You can read it here – https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/02/alien-beasts-snippet-from-trapped-for.html This week, I’m skipping to the next chapter where the two groups collide. Read on for the least romantic meeting of hero and heroine I’ve ever written. Maya has left the buried shuttle and she is struggling through the sand in Jack’s wake. She has just broken onto the surface.
Glaring sunlight blinded her. Someone grabbed her arms and yanked her out of the sand. Lying face down, she blinked in shock. Her restricted view centered on a set of curved claws; large blue claws on the five toes of a scaled blue foot. She stifled a scream. The alien person rolled her onto her back and bent to examine her. She stared into deep-set blue eyes peering from under a hood. It must be Atrapako, one of the humanoid inhabitants of the planet. A Blue Atrapako, the dominant, leader caste in their color-stratified society, its scaled body was concealed by a hooded cloak of dark brown leather. It wore a sheathed sword on its belt and a short tube strapped over its shoulder.

Yet the puny creatures have little value as slaves, except perhaps for the impudent woman who claims to be their leader. He plans to keep her. Her knowledge of the ancient texts will be an asset if she can survive the long trek to his house.
An attack by marauders forces Maya and the Blue leader into a wary alliance. They must work together to thwart the bandits and reunite their company. Can Maya convince Sa Vittaran to help her team? If she fails, they are doomed to a short unpleasant life on the desolate, war-torn planet.

Welcome Effrosyni! What inspired you to write The Ebb?
The book combines my love for both Corfu and Brighton. Although this is a work of fiction, the story of Sofia who adores her grandparents and their village in Corfu, brims over with autobiographical elements as I used to spend my summers in the same way as a young girl. Up to a point, the description of the locales are very close to reality as well. As for Brighton, I’ve always had a fascination towards the West Pier. I was inspired to write this story because I feel it’s a shame that this magnificent landscape no longer exists and I wanted to bring it back to life through my story. In the remaining two volumes of The Lady of the Pier trilogy, The Flow and The Storm, the story highlights many events in real life history that involve Brighton and this pier at the heart of WWII.
The Ebb is a sweet romance with a paranormal twist, and I understand you have branded the series as a paranormal romance trilogy. In what other genres do you write?
I am a paranormal romance author mostly, but I also write fantasy. I love to introduce a little magic into every novel. In my published stories so far, readers will find living and breathing Greek Gods, a haunting spirit seeking deliverance, an evil witch that kidnaps children, and a bunch of quirky guardian angels, one of them deeply in love and not having the faintest idea how to handle it. I like to mix humor with drama in all my stories too, and the paranormal/fantasy elements provide great opportunities to introduce both into my characters’ lives (*laughs*)
What can readers find on your website? On effrosyniwrites.com, readers can watch book trailers and download free excerpts of all my novels, and they can also discover a plethora of wonderful indie authors of many different genres via the interviews and book reviews/spotlights on my blog. Last, visitors are welcome to download my two permafree books that contain delightful short stories. Here is the link: http://effrosyniwrites.com/free-stuff/
