Greek Food & Beyond - South Point Mall, Gurgaon

Greek Food is now available widely in North India but is majorly restricted to a small section in a thick cafe menu. So I was in for as a pleasant surprise to visit a cafe, which is singularly focussed on Greek Food. Opened about a month ago, Greek Food & Beyond is situated on the third floor of South Point Mall
The owners, Sachin and Anita have taken great pains to make the food, decor, and ambiance as close to authentic Greek & Mediterranean food as possible. And this shows in the flavor and taste of the food. I had the opportunity to meet and talk to the lovely couple and discuss food with them. They told me that this is not their first food venture. They have a vast experience in the Food world (you can just get that by talking to them) and Greek Food and Beyond is already a major success in Bhopal.

The decor of the place gives out very light and spacious feel. The owners have consciously moved away from the whole couch trend and dim lighting towards a brightly light utilitarian furniture. The music is good and it plays comfortably in the background. It does not ruin your conversation or impedes into it in any way.

I was in no mood for salads and went on with the starters. I loved the fish kebobs because that is one thing many food places fail to perfect. They are also listed as a specialty of this place. Meatballs (or the Greek name, by which they are referred to), could have been better. They lacked that flavor which you associate with mutton. They have stuff beyond the usual Greek food as well (Hence the beyond in the name) and chicken lovers should try Chicken Chermoula, which is spiced and grilled quite well, using chermoula spices liberally. If you like vegetarian food potato keftedes is something you cannot afford to miss.

The bar license is still in works so one cannot enjoy liquor here yet (which I hope will be done soon) so I went for the chocolate fudge shake which was thick and creamy, the way it should be. Last time I had tried a similar shake some place else and they had ruined it with an extra dosage of ice and water. Greek Beyond and You has pretty much kept its quality in check.

For the main course, the team at the cafe suggested Greek Roast chicken which according to me tasted at par with the tandoori chicken we get in Punjab. Served with mashed potatoes, it is a full meal in itself and if you are looking for that simple hearty meal go for this full chicken. It won't disappoint you.

Desserts
You can't come out of this place without tasting their desserts. I had eyes on several items for desserts but Anita made the choice easy for me. She suggested I try the Chocolate Lava cake which takes a little time because they make it fresh. No one can mind waiting for a fresh cake and it was simply heavenly. It was the highlight of the meal.
Metro Connectivity - Rapid Metro Station is just outside the mall.Landmark - South Point Mall is sandwiched between Hotel Ibis and the Genpact building on the Golf Course Road.

Weavers at Centre stage of current season of India Runway Week

It would seem that no matter how big the India Runway Week gets, there you will always find fresh new names. Of course, the old designers continue every season. This is the 8th season of India Runway Week which is starting from 28th of April.

The weavers of India are its biggest assets. Indian hand woven fabrics have been known since time immemorial. India was famous even in ancient times as an exporter of textiles to most parts of the civilized world but throughout history and currently, too there are pieces of evidence that show that weavers have always been a victim of a staunch hierarchical system. Being at the bottom of the system they fall prey to the extreme forms of exploitation.
There are organizations that are identified as a promising means of raising voice for them and generating livelihood for hundreds of rural artisans. They have made a significant contribution to the lives of the women artisans working with it, which has helped improve their economic as well as social status.
They strive to bring the traditions of India to customers all around the world with its unique creations and products. It not only helps its artisans become wage earners but also spreads awareness about the traditional crafts of the region, thus helping preserve a rich part of India’s national cultural heritage. Indian Federation for fashion Development have joined hand with four of these organizations i.e Rangsutra, SoCHE, Banka Silk and Gestures by Kriti who will present the work of artisans at current season of India Runway Week Summer 2017 ramp which is starting from 28th of April to 30th of April 2017
“The purpose of this show is to raise the current conditions of the weavers and to propose the importance of such organizations and social security to the custodians of this ageless art.” Said by Fashion director, Kiran Kheva, India Runway Week
Rangsutra is a craft company of thousand artisans from remote regions of India – the desert regions of Rajasthan and plains of Eastern Uttar Pradesh whereas SoCHE is reviving this languishing and less popular hand embroidery practiced by women around the border areas of Barmer. Banka Silk on other hand is imparting the required skills to the weaver’s community of Banka, connecting them with the markets and helps create an Eco-system wherein the weaver’s community can become self-sustainable. And lastly Gestures by Kriti is a livelihood support and outreach initiative that began in 1999, to promote ethical, sustainable and socially conscious thinking & buying of 'community made' products.

Celebrate the World Book Day

Today is the World Book Day and it is a perfect excuse to talk and write about books. Book publishing in India is reaching great heights but the quality of content is miserably falling. We writers have a tremendous responsibility to keep up to the legends of regional literature most of whom we have already forgotten.
I understand that this is the name of the game. Times change, preference of people change and so do writing styles. But it is quite sad that we dump treasures of literature and start afresh. Here I would like to point to the role of libraries who have failed miserably to preserve literature and stories. As a storyteller myself I am often appalled at the way stories of yesteryear writers are erased from public memory and record. Just because a publisher lost interest and the library didn't care, the writer himself or herself no longer alive or around does not mean we forget all about the literary work.
This day is also a good day for us to introspect as a society as to whether we want books in our midst or not. For the businessmen amongst us, no longer want to sell books. I hardly see any bookseller in any market I visit. It seems we are only too happy to outsource this to foreign capital backed etailers and that too just a few of them. Most of them are too focussed on selling fashion anyway. In brick and mortar space Crossword is like the last man standing. So imagine my surprise when I found over my last visit, Crossword selling t-shirts.
When you then look at society's role in maintaining libraries, it is an alien concept. No one wants to do that. No one wants to discuss this. The libraries build years ago now lie in despicable state.
What this reflects is our utter disrespect for books. India, which is known for its seers and gurus. The propagator of knowledge and yet we have dumped books like a pariah. The books which we are publishing might relate to a section of the youth but are no way an endorsement of upliftment of our society.
Here is wishing the new level of introspection and a healthy debate on the state of books in India. And also on their rightful place in the Indian society.

On a completely different note, In the Awe of Life is now available in print through Amazon but currently only available in selected countries.

Rule The Rolls Galleria Market DLF Phase 4 Gurgaon

Sons of the owner of Khan Chacha have started this awesome place called Rule the Rolls at the Galleria Market in Gurgaon. I say awesome for its Greek and Mediterranean inspired blue colored interiors.

Apparently the owners of Khan Chacha had tied up with a big investor with deep pockets who eventually pocketed their brand too. While the case is sub-judice, they have opened their own shop to keep the family tradition of roll making going.
I tried the mutton roll and the chicken roll both were soft and good. Osman the man running the kitchen comes across as a skilled and knowledgeable person who understands the intricacies of crafting that perfect non-vegetarian food. Although they do have vegetarian options, I recommend this place to the meat lovers. Especially because of the Tikkas which are soft and warm.
I also liked the boat-shaped areca nut leaf gravy bowls in which they serve generous quantities of mint and yogurt chutney and sliced onions. Something which should always accompany the roles.

They have not started home delivery yet, something which I suggested the management do ASAP for the demand for home delivery would be quite high.

For drinks, they have the usual soft drinks menu along with juices and iced tea. They also whip up the right curd lassi which is way different from the usual Chach lassi you get everywhere. Curd lassi is thick and goes well with all the meat you want to gorge on at this place. However, the iced tea and lassi were not as cold as the weather outside wanted them to be.

Jhakkaas - Punjabi Bagh Market, Delhi

Punjabi Bagh's main market is quite a nerve center being a major activity hub for the plush residential colony. It is here that McDonald's opened in its first expansion phases. Jhakkas is an encroachment on a pavement on the main road. It serves lip smacking Pav Bhaji which is in literal terms talk of the town.

They key to a good Bhaji is that it should be cooked really well. You got to keep it simmering. Jhakkaas does that to perfection. The addition of dollops of butter brings in the desired flavor. They serve it with green mint chutney which does not happen everywhere. It adds to that street food vibe you are looking at.

I tried both Veg butter tadka pav bhaji and veg butter masala pav bhaji. The only difference between the both is that the latter will have a spread of red chili paste on the pav buns. You can try it if you like it spicier. Otherwise, go with the former.

These are the two most selling items but they have other food on the menu like the Dabeli which you can try if want to have something other than Pav Bhaji

Deep Cleaning Service by Broomberg

Recently, I suggested benefits of deep cleaning of the house done to family members who gave me a skeptical response we give when we are not aware of something. Then came the offer from Broomerberg, whether I would like to get my house deep cleaned and I said yes.
Booking
I had a word with the team over the phone itself. Somehow I am not into those App booking things. Calling someone and discussing things before booking gives me better comfort and confidence. I liked the way these guys talked. I got a call to confirm address, then an SMS to confirm the booking and address. A day prior to the booking, someone from Broomberg called me to advise that the team will reach on time in the morning and that I should expect them to work for around eight hours straight. I confirmed the address and time again to apprise my family members of a crew coming to clean the house.

Punctuality and Timing
I must say, one has to commend the crew of Broomberg for their respect of time. They had given 10.30 a.m. as the time of their arrival and they were exactly on time. They said they would need eight hours approx to clean the house and by 6, 6.30 they were done.

Discipline & Professional
The four guys who came to our house were well disciplined and very professional. They knew what they were doing and wasted no time to get things done. They went about their work in a professional no nonsense way which is a huge relief amidst the chaos of moving things around for cleaning.

The Goods
A major plus. They get everything they need from their own place. Ladders, vacuum cleaners, mops and even buckets are packed into a van and brought by them. This made things so easy for us as they had everything they required to make the place spotless. They even got an array of cleaning agents and liquids to give that extra spark and shine to appliances, floors, and electricals.

Divison of Labor
As the guys set to work, it was clear that they had a methodology in mind and a set process to follow. Each one picked up one room each and began his work as per set priority.

The Feedback
It was a good gesture on the part of Ankit from Broomberg to give a courtesy call the next day. He called in to inquire about feedback on the team. Thumbs up from my side for the team at Broomberg and would recommend periodic deep cleaning to everyone.

“More Indian than you think” - Celebrating the Indianess in us

I have always believed that our Indianness is what makes us special. Being an Indian, makes us stand out from the crowd. We might not know this or sometimes act like this but we are and we act in a very Indian way

As I write this, I recall several instances where I have encountered success by the virtue of being an Indian. I remember that when I wrote the story of Avenging Act and published it as a book, some people suggested that the characters look too raw and natural. The main male lead was acting way too good. It is almost like a true story and not a work of fiction. But then a reader from Australia who had bought an e-book from Amazon, wrote to me that she loved the characters of the book. She added that she had been to India and my story reminded her of her interactions with Indians and the love she received from them. It also invoked memories of Delhi for her.

Another incident that comes to mind is when I was working baggage inquiries for an airline. A caller calls up to inquire about a bag of her daughter who was staying in Delhi. The mother was calling from Manchester to inquire about her daughter's bag.Whilst trying to trace her daughter's bag, she let on how her daughter was stuck in a hotel without proper winter clothing, even though the temperature was quite low outside.

I advised her that yes, I too was in Delhi and could understand the problem. It took me around forty minutes to trace the bag and persuade various departments to get the bag delivered ASAP. When I relayed the news to the lady, she remarked that the moment I told her that I was in Delhi, she had believed that I would get the problem resolved for her. For according to her, Indians are very courteous and helpful as has been her experience. I thanked her and she thanked me as we ended the call.
Oh, whilst we are on the topic, here is Lufthansa's latest TVC on Indians and is a delight to watch.

BBQ Factory - Golf Course Road - Gurgaon

Had lunch at the BBQ Factory, a buffet themed restaurant situated at the Central Plaza Mall, Golf Course Road. The buffet is lavish and the service quick. I especially enjoyed the live music which added to the comfortable and relaxing feel this place gives you. The menu is heavily inspired from the Pirates of the Grill but perfectly executed.

I would recommend the drink Detox, which is a cucumber and lemon based mocktail. It's a house specialty and a must try. Works quite well in this weather and with all the food you eat.

In starters, they served me to fish, chicken, mutton the whole gamut including the vegetarian variety of Cottage Cheese and Potatoes. However, mushrooms were strangely missing from the menu. Tandoori Non-veg momos were like the best I have ever had till date. Grilled pineapple is again my all time favorite at Pirates and at BBQ Factory they do it great.

The concept of barbeque is present at each table where they seat coals and place food on skewers and place it on the top of coals.

In the main course, I tasted the non-vegetarian dishes wherein the Fish is fantastic. They cook it without egg or cornflour and yet maintain great taste. Although I am not a big fan of mutton, the rarra mutton was good and so was the chicken.
If one had to compare the western and Indian desserts, the Indian ones, were way better. Especially the Moong Dal ka Halwa was perfectly cooked.

This place is quite good for family and friends gatherings. As you get plenty of food, live music and cheerful staff at your service. Makes for an ideal setting to spend some quality time.

The Kiwi Cool is really a cool drink but Detox is way better
