~가지고 & ~(으)로 “Using” | Live Class Abridged

Last Sunday I did a live classroom all about how to say “using,” and taught both ~(으)로 and ~가지고. The particle ~(으)로 is the most standard way to do this, but ~가지고 is also commonly used in informal speech. However, they’re not completely interchangeable, and ~가지고 has several uses that ~(으)로 has and vice versa.

Sunday’s live class was about the word ~짜리, which attaches to the end of a word (most often counter words) and means an “amount” or “number” of something, or “worth of” something when used with money. It’s used commonly after several counter words that are included in this lesson (원짜리, 개짜리, 살짜리, etc.).

만큼 “As Much As” & “Because” | Live Class Abridged

만큼 can mean both “as much as” and “because,” but literally it just means an “amount,” a “quantity,” or a “volume.” In my most recent live stream I taught both of these main uses of 만큼, as well as another form (으)니만큼, which is advanced and means “because.” I also compared 만큼 to 정도로, and talked about all of the ways to use 만큼. The full live stream was over two hours long, but you can watch only the lesson parts here in just 17 minutes.

Learn Korean Ep. 130: ~해 가지고 “Because”

Keykat wants to try playing the game 공기, where you have to pick up these little plastic balls quickly. I think it’s too difficult for Keykat, but she wants to try it anyway.

This is a lesson about the grammar form ~아/어/etc. 가지고 which is used after conjugated verbs, and means “because” or “and then.” It’s used similarly to the ~서 form, which can also have those meanings.
