dharma clip : Kriya – Part One

Kriyayoga, the foundational tripod of our practice: tapas (discipline),svadhyaya(self-study), andisvari-pranidhana(surrender).When understood wisely, these three practices support us in creating self-nurturing discipline, awakening self-empathy, and discovering freedom. However, when theconditioned mind translates these teachings, we run the risk of further promoting the aspects of our human habits that cause rather than alleviate suffering: discipline becomes rigid or punitive; self-study be...

dharma clip : Kosha – Part Two

These dharma talk clips go into the Koshas as a model for the human experience.
The koshas reflect the multi-layered experience of being human. We have a unique potential as humans: to realize our native heart, to remember our innate embodiment as love, and to know our finiteness is also our preciousness. Yet conditioning, both personal and cultural, causes us to be more prone to forgetting than remembering. The koshas map out the journey of remembering. The koshas also guide us in navigatin...

Teaching People Not Poses
Following two volunteer trainings (Seattle and Arcata), we recently completed our first module of the Yoga and Social Justice Teacher Training, a 200-hour Yoga Alliance program. It proved to be provocative, engaging, and transformative. A foundational aspect of my philosophy in this training is to use the tools of yoga to support, address, or cultivate a brain state that is available to learning, open to new ways of being, and willing to entertain change.
I call this the “learn-able brain state...

Resiliency, Advocacy, and Community: Alternatives to Jails, Hospitals, and Coffins
I recently read a couple of articles that, filled with emotion and poignancy, I felt compelled to share with you. Through these tender and complicated stories, may we discover our humanity, our sense of community, and our calling to make a difference. The first article,The Cost of Not Caring: No Where To Go: The Financial And Human Toll for Neglecting the Mentally Ill(USA TODAY),provokes a tremendous sadness on many levels:
There is sorrow for the afflicted, sorrow for those who care for them,...

Bandwidth for Radiance – Part Two

Each of us has within an underlying body-intelligence and spiritually-inspired intuition guiding us toward radiant health and equanimity. Yet inspite of the body-mind-psyche transmitting messages to us throughout the day (and throughout our life span), we can find ourselves going off-course. Fortunately, this will produce symptoms. Though these symptoms may be uncomfortable and undesirable, when understood as an invitation to return to deep respect for the messages of our body-mind-psyche, w...
