Jennifer Aniston’s Morning Drink

The fam and I had a fabu spring break in Florida… sun, rest, and laughs (and tears, yes, it happens when you are constantly around 4 people 24/7, and yes, I probably cried the most! Ha!).

Spring Renewal Detox

Besides lying on the beach and being present with the people I love the most, I also have to confess that one of my favorite parts of the vacation was going to yoga class. By myself. (Like I said, I love my family, but some alone time never hurts).

On our way back home, we stopped in Savannah. I found a gorgeous yoga center with a juice shop. Perfect.  Vinyasa and green juice, my jams.

At the top of the stairs, I saw this amazing community board.

yoga wall

I smiled as I read the power of the words: I AM confident. I AM sexy. I AM possibility. I AM motivated. I AM beautiful. I AM love.

Yes, I AM! But a rush of I AM bloated, I AM full, I AM breaking out, came over me.

For the past few months, I have been doing more eating out due to travel and this vacation did me in. To keep my body in balance, I tend to eat out about once a week at the most. Sometimes I would go for weeks without going to restaurants. The reason is that the extra sugar and salt in the food affects me.  Plus a glass of wine here and there…for my body, eating out just doesn’t work. I could feel it in my jeans as well as see it on my face.

In the past, I would berate myself for not having control and vow to do better. I would deprive, weigh and measure in order to get back to balance. I would shout in my head, “What’s wrong with you? Why are you eating this bad food?”

But as you know, things like that keep you stuck and you end up feeling defeated. Plus I never knew the WHY, the causes of feeling blah.

After learning how to listen to my body with detox over the years, I didn’t stay in that stuck moment for long. I reminded myself that I know why I feel that way (eating out! which includes the bread basket, wine and dessert), and I’ll be able to get back on track. No worries.  I quickly reverted my thoughts to I AM abundant. I AM inspiration. I AM ENOUGH.

Since I know the culprit of my bloated belly and breakouts, I am taking a break from eating out and doing a few things diligently to get back on track.

One BIG thing I am doing to flush out the yuk  is something that Jennifer Aniston (soooooo love her; who doesn’t love Rachel!)  drinks each morning.

AND guess what, we do this very same thing during our Renewal detoxes!

Jennifer

“If I’m working, I’m up at 4:30, 5 a.m. If not, between 8 and 9 a.m., because I’m a late-night person—I putter. But usually when I wake up, I’ll make my standard cup of water with a slice of lemon in there.” ~Jennifer Aniston

She also does her Transcendental meditation and adds collagen to her smoothies, but this  simple act to start your day is crucial for setting up good habits.

I know, water is such a boring subject, but this liquid wonder can work magic. We are made up of 70-80% water so replenishing especially right when you wake up is necessary.

Drink your water with lemon first thing in the morning(immediately upon waking, even before you go to the bathroom), and wait 15 to 30 minutes to have breakfast. This will help you fully receive the benefits, which are listed below.

Here are 5 health benefits of water with lemon you might not know about:

Boosts immune system: Lemons contain Vitamin C and potassium.Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb these vitamins and minerals effectively and can provide a little immune boost.Vitamin C is also good for the adrenals and can  help reduce the affects of stress.
Aids digestion:The biggest lemon water benefit may be from the temperature of the water and not even the lemon. Drinking water, or especially warm water, first thing in the morning can help flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body.  Your organs, especially the liver, detoxifies naturally while you are sleeping, cleaning your system to get ready for the next day. You wake up rather acidic (in your blood cells) so the water naturally brings things back to balance. Water with lemon helps things flow easily (if you know what I mean).
A natural flush: The liver is extremely active during sleep since sleep is the body’s time to restore and regenerate. Drinking enough water, especially in the morning, helps make sure that the body can perform during the day.  Your lymph system (seat of immunity) is boosted as well as your metabolism, aiding in an all-body flush, inside and out.

4. Clear skin: The antioxidants in lemon juice help to not only decrease blemishes, but wrinkles too! Lemon water can also be applied to age spots to reduce their appearance, and because it’s detoxifying your blood cells, it will maintain your skin’s glow.

By helping flush the body and improve digestion, lemon water can lead to cleaner skin. It also contains Vitamin C which is needed for collagen production for smooth, healthy skin.

5. Maintain a healthy weight:  Lemons contain pectin fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings.  Many times when we get that hunger feeling, we are, in fact, dehydrated. So reaching for that lemon water can help you cut down on extra noshing.

Here’s how I make my lemon water (I’m a lemon whore… I use 3 slices!):

me with water and lemon

SO we can do like Jennifer and drink our lemon water each morning… a great detox habit you can implement a.s.a.p. Yaaaassss!

Do you drink lemon water each morning?

PS. We will be drinking up (lemon water that is!) during the LIVE Spring Renewal 10 Day Detox happening April 18th.

Zen Collard Wrap Recipe

It’s time for lunch!

So instead of the same ole same ole salad, try making wraps with collards.

Yep, collards. Sorry, kale, you might have to move over. Collards is the new sexy green, at least in my book.

Collards are super-rich in anti-inflammatory powers and also packed with :

vitamin A (yay for the eyes!)
vitamin K (essential to keep your blood clotting and prevents osteoporosis and althimers)
calcium ( great for your bones)
fiber (keeps blood sugar level)
chlorophyll (alkalizing and balancing)

Let’s make the Zen Collard Wraps, shall we?!

Zen Collard Wraps

Ingredients:

1 zucchini, chopped (1/2 cup)

1 garlic clove, minced

½ lemon, peeled

1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

¼ cup tahini

¼ cup sun-dried tomatoes

2 Tbsp. dried basil

1 tsp. sea salt

2 collard green leaves

Directions:

Blend everything except collard greens together in food processor until smooth.

Zen Collard Wraps

Slice the thick stem away from collard leaves so you end up with two halves of the leaf.

Zen Collard Wrap

Wrap a spoonful of hummus up in each leaf. Serve.

Serves 1-2

Zen Collard Wrap

What do you say?

Zesty Quinoa Soup

Zesty Quinoa Soup

Last week it snowed. A record 29 inches!

Although, I don’t like to be cold and winter is not my favorite time of year, I’m embracing the beauty of slowing down.

During  #blizzard2016, I read books, Netflixed, cuddled with my cute little family,  and got a break from life.

Lately I’ve been working and working and working. I love, love, my business and I’m constantly thinking about ways I can support you. Creating, developing, coaching, teaching, writing, I’m so lucky to do things I enjoy every day.

But I’ve been bogged down lately with lots of busy work that takes me away from creating. Plus my ego likes to work overtime which makes me tired (the inner-critic likes to push and push sometimes!). So taking a mini-vacay was just what I needed.

Granted nature forced me to take a break, but just stepping away for a bit rejuvenated my spirit and provided me the EASE I crave.

Your body also needs that EASE, too; from pushing, striving, feeling drained and bloated (especially in the tummy)… from sugar, processed foods, sodas, fast food. In fact, your body may want to give up this stuff for good.

Clearing the clutter in your cells with real, whole, anti-inflammatory foods like veggies, fruits, dark leafy greens, gluten-free grains, etc… can provide the EASE you need to feel:

• light and less bloated

• all-day energy

• looking younger (yep, eating clean will do that!)

• the GLOW… the more plants, whole foods, and cooking at home you do, the more you shine!

And eating clean and healthy doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money or time in the kitchen.

In fact,  this Zesty Quinoa Soup is a perfect example (and I’m pretty proud of this one!) of EASE.

It cost $2.65 to make and I had leftovers.

AND time spent cooking, almost nada.

Seriously.

I threw everything in the crock pot. (This beauty  was a wedding gift. In my younger days, I was like, what the hell do I do with this thing, and now, I can’t live without it! You can cook EVERYTHING in one of these!).

If you are looking for a warm soup that is cheap and easy to  make, I got your covered. In fact, I made Zesty Quinoa Soup twice this week!

It’s packed with a good carb (veggies), protein (quinoa, the only complete protein in the plant world), and fat (avocado).

Wanna make it?!

Zesty Quinoa Soup

Ingredients:

1 cup quinoa (one bag is $4.72 so 1 cup is appr. $. 32)

1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil ( 12.7 oz. Spectrum bottle is $10.23, so 1 Tbsp. is appr. $.10)

1 garlic clove, minced (or use garlic powder, Simply Organic for $4.76 for 3.64 oz. OR 1 garlic bulb  $.50)

½ onion, chopped (1/4 cup) (a 1 lb. bag onions is $2.00 so 1/2 of one onion is appr. $.12)

2 cups vegetable broth (1 carton is $3.45 so 2 cups $1.22 )

1 Tbsp. lemon juice (I used 1/4 a lemon (1 lemon was $.52 so quarter lemon is $.13)

1 tomato, chopped (1/2 cup) (usually $1.29 per pound so 1 tomato is $.23)

1/2 avocado, peeled, pitted, and cubed ( $.86 for one avocado)

Sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions: Throw all ingredients except avocado in the crock pot and cook on Hi for 3-4 hours.

When ready to serve, pour soup in bowl and top with avocado cubes. Season with salt and pepper.

Serves 2

*Double ingredients and make extra!

When you add up the math for this meal:

A lot of the ingredients I had to buy in bulk/pounds so it was rather challenging to price out just 1 Tbsp. olive oil. Th

$.10 (oil)

$.10 (garlic)

$.12 (onion)

$1.22 (veggie broth)

$.13 (lemon)

$.23 (tomato)

$.43 (avocado)

TOTAL:  $2.65 appr.

You can have the oil, bag of onions, garlic, lemon, quinoa and the veggie broth for a few more meals.

It was challenging to calculate because the ingredients are bought in bulk or priced so low. All ingredients except avocado and lemon are organic.  Those two items are on the Clean 15 list and no need to worry about pesticides. Always check your Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 chart to save even more money!

EASE, that is the name of the game!

Do you have an EASE-y crock pot recipe?  Do share below!

Good Morning Fruit Salad

Good Morning Fruit Salad

We are talkin’ EASE this year… I want us ALL to feel EASE in 2016. Are you with me?!

My wish for you in 2016 is EASE. It’s my guiding word for 2016 and I want to share it with you.

Ease with our relationships.

Ease with making decisions.

Ease with our food.

In addition to clearing away clutter in my house, I’ve been walking out of movies I don’t like, passing on social events that don’t WOW me, saying NO to all kinds of things. It feels good… hard to do at first, but the more you take care of myself, the EASE-y it becomes.

And I want to support you when it comes to your food… finding ease within your body.

As humans, we want balance, ease and on a physical level, our organs need this ease, balance, to help us live at an optimal level.

You want to be at a 7.365 most of the time. This means that your body is operating at a balanced level; keeping you healthy. The acidity from coffee, sugar, processed foods, etc… cause our blood cells to become inflamed. Acne, thyroid issues, depression, fatigue, hard to lose the last 10 pounds are common issues.

AND then over time, a long period of time in some instances, inflammation leads to chronic illness.

We want to prevent that at all costs. That’s where detox comes in.

A good cleanse can reset your body and bring it back to balance, to feel ease again.

It will be easier to lose weight, get control of your cravings, find more energy and plain ole stay off meds and feel amazing.

So how do you know if you need a cleanse?

Ask yourself these q’s:

Do you have extra fluff, especially around the tummy, that won’t come off with exercise and diet?
Do you get bloated after eating?
Do you have headaches more than occasionally?
Do you frequently feel gassy?
Do you tend to feel lethargic during the day, especially late afternoons?
Do you have allergies?
Do you have cravings for sugar or carby foods?
Do you experience anxiety or mood swings?
Do you have a tough time remembering things or have “foggy brain?”
Do you feel pain and/or stiffness  in your joints?
Do you have sleepless nights or insomnia?
Do you feel addicted to foods that you know aren’t good for you… but you just can’t stop?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, it’s time to cleanse!

To allow your body to experience EASE, a safe, whole foods cleanse is recommended.

Skip acidic foods:

processed foods, sugars, caffeine, dairy, gluten, animal protein, alcohol

AND add anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, veggies, dark leafy greens, avocados, nuts, seeds, lentils, hummus… I can go on and on!

If you need an EASE-y breakfast you can make day after day, packed with protein and anti-inflammatory ingredients, well, I have the best idea… Good Morning Fruit Salad.

This breakfast is straight out of my new cookbook, Go Clean, Sexy You, and it’s so delish not to mention Ease-y to make. PLUS EASE-y on your body. Score!

Good Morning Fruit Salad

Ingredients:

1 banana, chopped

1 apple, sliced

1 Tbsp. sliced almonds

1 Tbsp. raisins

1 Tbsp. coconut flakes

1 Tbsp. flaxseeds

Mix all ingredients except flaxseeds in a bowl. Sprinkle flax over salad. Serve.

* I like to pour on coconut milk to make it a cereal.

What do you say?
What is your 2016 word? Share with me in the comments!

Eat Your Cake Smoothie

Eat Your Cake Smoothie

I mentioned adding maca to my smoothie the other day…

So what is maca anyway?

Maca, maca, maca… there’s so much to tell you but I’ll be brief.

Maca has been around thousands of years. Studies have shown that maca nourishes the endocrine system so adding this powder to your smoothies can help with stress and support your adrenals.

Maca combats fatigue and is also great for stamina and boosting libido (why yes!).

This nutrient dense whole food is packed with vitamins, essential minerals and amino acids.

Maca would taste great in today’s Eat Your Cake Smoothie. Let’s try it!

Eat Your Cake Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup spinach
2 cups almond milk
1 banana, frozen
¼ cup raw cashews
2-3 mejool dates
1 Tbsp. lemon juice (or juice ½ lemon)
Pinch of sea salt

Boost: 1 Tbsp. chia seeds
AND 1 Tbsp. maca powder (Nativas Naturals is a great brand)

Join The 21 Day Green Up Smoothie Challenge and win a Clean + Sexy Wellness Pack (consults, programs, books, gift cards, and more)! Get the deets and sign up. It’s fun. It’s free.
