How We Form New Habits
During the last month, we have been discussing and how the cues and keystone habits can help you create change in your life.
If you missed the posts,
and.
The third and final tip to help you form healthy new habits is to do something that seems very easy, but it’s the hardest to implement.
Act as if.
Science proves that “acting as if” works.
So what I mean is that you really must believe, truly believe down to your bones, that change is possible for you.
You can do all kinds of things to form habits by setting your cues and developing core keystone habits, but if you don’t believe that you deserve to feel good or can change, you just won’t.
The first time you fall off your healthy eating plan on vacation cruise, you’ll step on the scale when you get back home, and you’ll freak out.
Possibly you’ll tell yourself,
“See, I told you…I knew this would happen. You suck. I can’t keep the weight off no matter how much I try. I’m going to be fat forever.”
And in that moment, saying that you can’t change, well, you actually sealed your fate.
If you realize, instead, that you were on vacation and it’s okay to let go and have fun, and you’ll get back on the horse, no prob, you’ll be able to bounce back in no time.
Also if you “act as if” you are a certain way (healthy, strong, sexy, happy…) and you’ll discover that you already possess the qualities you desire which will lead to wanting to feel that more and more.
But I just can’t stop here and tell you that it’s going to be easy to “act as if.”
Body image…
Self-esteem…
Confidence…
Inner critic…
Ego…
The wiring of your cells for years, possibly even being born into anxiety or the “I’m not good enough” thoughts can make things extra hard when trying to form new habits.
Honestly, I can’t pretend that I don’t still struggle with my inner critic, who tends to tell me I’m not good enough or I don’t deserve to be happy. She sometimes pops up at unexpected times, especially those times when I’m trying something new.
I was born with the feeling of “I’m not enough.” So I have first-hand experience with overcoming the thoughts that can keep you small and stuck.
I can sometimes fall into the trap of trying to be perfect and not allowing myself to be vulnerable or fail. I need to have my shit together, right?
Truly believing that you deserve the world and that change is something you can do is extremely powerful… my cells possess, way deep inside, deep down…a part of me that knows I can do it. But “acting as if” was something I had to teach myself.
Even though I’m a newborn (0r possibly now a toddler) with feeling that I CAN do it, I CAN make changes and I deserve it, I can tell you it gets easier each time you take a step further.
I’ve done so much work on digging deep inside, acknowledging this judgy voice and then telling her
“Thank you, but no, I don’t agree. I deserve this and I’m a bad ass. So move along!”
I’ve been asked many times,
“What do you do if your cells don’t believe you can change?”
And the only answer I swear by is, in order to believe, you need to have proof. And how do you get proof?
Taking action is my advice…just jumping in, can help you build upon each success which in turn gives you confidence. Your cells change and the vibration is raised.
And you can say I literally mean jumping in!
It’s a story, my story of how I started the whole process of really believing in myself.
When I was 37 years old, I blindly signed on to compete in the Iron Girl Triathlon with a group of friends from the gym.
I didn’t realize, until I read the description, that I had to swim .62 miles (more than 1/2 a mile!) before biking for 18 miles, then running a 5 k. The bike and run, okay, I could manage. But swimming…I never learned how to swim. I was never on swim team and the only time I went to the pool back in my day was to lay out.
It took all I had, every ounce of my being, to put on a swimsuit, cap and goggles and sit by the edge of the pool. It took me forever to dive into the water to start laps. Once I did, my body hit the cold water, and I wondered if it was too late to quit.
I started by keeping my head above water; it was too scary to submerge all the way. After practicing for months like that, I realized that I was going VERY slow and putting my head under water was what I had to do in order to survive the race.
Little by little, I put my head under water, panicking, gulping water and breathing like I only had one last breath! I had 2 more weeks before the race, so I just kept going, moving through the usual doubt I came across anytime I tried something out of my comfort zone.
I really wanted to quit. Really.
I was scared shitless about not being able to make it through the swim and since I was so slow, I knew that my friends will smoke me with their times. I wasn’t looking forward for all the comparing (actually it was only me who compared when it came down to it).
Race day came, and I got through the swim…granted I did the back stroke, free style, anything to make it. It took me forever and thoughts of being scooped up on a raft or told I was disqualified flooded my thoughts.
But when I crossed the finish line, shit, I felt invisible.
I reach for this story anytime I fear I won’t be able to change, do something that will lift me up, even higher than before.
And you won’t believe it, but now it is a habit for me to do laps for my morning workouts…I do this at least 3 times a week and even more in the summer. I lay out my stuff the night before (keystone habit), and since my cue is siting by the edge of the pool, instead of waiting and waiting, fixing my goggles, looking at my smartphone, doing anything to stall getting in the water, I now changed the behavior to diving right in immediately, feeling the shock of the water, knowing that I can swim, I have done it before, and now it is a habit I love.
By taking action, you’ll start to realize, actually feel it in your body, what change feels like, how it molds new thoughts and eventually your habits. You’ll get into the practice of switching your mindset from negative to positive, but you will always need to be aware.
You never know when that inner critic, ego, whatever you want to call that part of you, pipes in to stifle your dreams.
Just know that you aren’t alone in feeling that believing in yourself can be hard work. It is HARD work…for all of us. Just a little bit at a time…jump in and see what happens.
What do you say?
Tell me how you will use this last step in achieving your health goals. What small step will you take in order to truly believe that change can happen for you?

Game of Thrones Binging and Forming Habits
Last post we discussed and how the cue can help you create a new habit.
If you missed it,
The next strategy to you keep consistent with your clean living is to develop keystone habits.
In a nutshell, keystone habits snowball into even more positive habits without a lot of effort.
According to , the author of The Power of Habit…
Keystone habits explain how Michael Phelps became an Olympic champion and why some college students outperform their peers. They describe why some people, after years of trying, suddenly lose 40 pounds while becoming more productive at work and still getting home in time for dinner with their kids.
You pick just ONE habit and repeat it each day, over and over again. Pretty soon, without you knowing, it’s trickling to other areas of your life.
Pretty interesting stuff.
For example, my keystone habits happen in the morning. Making my bed (and all the beds in the house…I really need to train my kids to make theirs!), having my workout clothes laid out the night before so I exercise on time,
My fav workout gear
and meditation set the tone of my day.
Therefore, for example, when I exercise, I feel better about myself and more energetic; I’m less likely to grab a false energy boost food or drink which will in turn help me to get through the day without mindless eating. All this allows me to get a good night’s sleep so I can get up early, exercise, and have an amazing next day.
A ripple effect!
But what happens when you let go of one or all of your keystone habits?
Well, I found out first hand. And not too proud to tell you this…but the truth always sets you free, right?
I spent the month of June glued to my laptop, watching all four seasons of .
I love Daenerys the most…
I’m not sure what got into me. It was like I was on some type of crack! I couldn’t tear myself away. I was obsessed!
I tried to tell myself that I needed to learn about the houses (because let’s face it, it can be so confusing!); that I needed to backtrack to the very first episode and start over.
But if I had to tell the absolute truth, it was my way of escaping from the cookbook manuscript I needed to write.
You see, sitting down to write a whole book, scared the hell out of me (it’s just too big of a task and it’s just too big of a deal…what if I screw up?).
So while I was procrastinating and immersing myself with Lannisters, dragons and The Wall, I wasn’t able to keep up with my morning keystone habits.
Staying up to midnight, 1, 2 am caused me to sleep in, rush out the door with messy beds, and miss my workouts. And meditations, well that totally didn’t happen.
My whole day was shot.
I found myself daydreaming about the last episode I watched and planning a time I could slip way and just vedge again. I wasn’t getting anything done!
This went on for a few weeks (I know, like, right…).
One day I sat myself down for a long talk. Even though I knew on some level what I was doing, I wasn’t going to change unless I could feel good again. My body needed to remember what good feels like.
So I did ONE thing…
I picked just one keystone habit to get me back in the groove…not all three, but one.
Laying out my exercise gear the night before.
That’s it. Just one habit. I knew that I would get overwhelmed if I went for all three at once.
Having my workout clothes ready when I get up sets me up for success. I make it to my spin class on time. I sweat. I feel strong. I have a good day.
My body feels good!
Overtime I got back to all three of my keystone habits and I feel centered again…powerful, in charge of my life.
I do have to tell you, though, that letting go of my keystone habits happened before, and it will happen again.
It’s life. It’s inevitable.
But the key is to recognize why you are doing to avoid or procrastinate then accept it. Once you do that, take action and you’ll see things falling into line again.
No use beating yourself up about it (as I start to do but then tell my inner critic to shut the hell up, I’m human!)…just choose one keystone habit to start and go for it. It can be done!
Now I’m on to catching up with …but don’t worry, I’m in the groove again and nothing beats how good I feel when I have my keystone habits in place.
Now I want to hear from you…
What do you say?
In the comments below, tell me ONE keystone habit you will incorporate into your daily routine. Share and I will check on you to see how it’s going!
PS. Are you a GOT fan, too? Okay, can we talk about it? Ha! Alright time to move on!

Raw Gluten-Free Brownie Recipe
Are you celebrating the big holiday this weekend? If you are in the States, the is packed with flags, parades, fireworks, and food, and I’m sure you are planning to enjoy all of these fun things.
I especially love the sparklers.
But what can raise your cortisol levels and get you all fired up is the concern that you will gain weight with all the partying going on.
I have a trick for you to ease the pain which I’ll tell you about in a minute. I use it all the time.
But a little background first. You see, I was concerned about the same thing, and it’s still in the back of my mind when holidays pop up. Especially when visiting my relatives.
I’m headed to Pittsburgh for a cookout with my parents and my cute little Italian aunts. And I mean little…I feel like a giant around them, and I’m only 5’3”!
Anyhoo, I grew up with celebrations consisting of chicken in a bucket, orange soda, bags of potato chips, and any type of sausage or processed meat you can find.
So of course, what will be at the cookout? You guessed it.
My family is sweet, though, especially my dad, bringing something “healthy” for me to eat, but of course when he walks away, I check the ingredients and cringe.
What to do?
Okay, here’s the best tip I have for you, and it works. (It’s a baby step tip because if we try to overall everything at once, we’ll give up).
Ready? It’s called the Cue.
, a journalist who wrote the best-selling book, t, provides the neuroscience details behind how we form new habits and the main tip is the cue.
If you want to create a new habit, you need to pick a cue that will signal to you it’s time to rely on that new habit.
For instance, you have a bad day at work (cue). You go home, order takeout, and pour yourself a glass of wine.
To form a new habit, take your cue (a bad day at work), but instead substitute the behavior with grabbing your fave salad at Whole Foods and going for a twenty minute walk after dinner. Hopefully the reward will be the same (forgetting about the bad day), but in the process you substituted a new healthy habit for dealing with bad days.
Sure, kale can’t replace wine, you say, but try it and see how your cells start to shift. Over time, your body begins to favor the “cleaner” behavior.
We practice this exact behavior during our detoxes. In fact, many graduates tell me all the time how they now prefer to switch their favorite indulgent foods with “cleaner “ versions.
Try this tip immediately. Get in the habit now so the weekend doesn’t throw you off kilter with your clean living plan.
The cue: holiday party (cookout, picnic, etc…).
New behavior: make a “cleaned up” version of your favorite food and bring it to the party.
You’ll set yourself up to succeed, feel better about your choices and even keep things in check instead of going crazy at the snack table.
Now before you slip out of town, I want to share what I’m making for t he cookout, and I’m in deep love with these. I always reach for the brownies so this time I’ll have mine ready.
Raw Brownies!
They are gluten-free, processed sugar-free, vegan and heaven in your mouth. This is my “cleaned up” substitution, and they taste so much better than a brownie made from a box. And I bet my relatives will try them, too!
Since they are raw, there’s no long process of baking and ovens. Sweeet!
You’ll only need 5 ingredients, too. Don’t cha just love when it’s this easy?
Let’s make Raw Brownies Squares, shall we?
Ingredients:
2 cups cashews (soak in water for 1-2 hours if you have time)
¾ cup walnuts
1 cup raw cacao powder (I like brand)
2/3 cup soft pitted dates
1 Tbsp. coconut oil
Directions:
Put all ingredients in food processor and blitz until they are well combined and have a smooth paste (not sticky).
Scrape the mixture into a prepared baking pan and smooth level with your hands.
Refrigerate for 1 hour before cutting into 6- 8 squares.
Serve.
You’ll need a deep 8 ¾ x 6 inch baking pan or container lined with parchment paper.
*Note: I’ve tried many types of ways to make these treats, and I found that these ingredients are the ticket.
What do you say?
Remember, we are switching the behavior based on the cue, taking it one step at a time.
How do you plan to keep it clean during your holiday weekend? Please share in the comments as I know it will help everyone in our wonderful community.

Avocado Tomato Salad with Hot Stuff Dressing
There are tons of things I LOVE about going raw, especially in the summer.
When you go raw, you are getting tons of into your system without destroying any vitamins and .
Keeping enzymes intact can do wonders for your cells:
• You look younger. Enzymes bust free radicals that we are exposed to constantly in our products and environment.
• You feel energized. nutrients feed your cells immediately; there’s less work for your body to do which means healing and rejuvenation happen fast.
• You are lighter. Smoothies, juices, salads, chilled soups, all kinds of seasonal delights can ease bloating and flatten the tummy.
And I especially dig the uncooking part!
Yes, uncooking. So what I mean is that you aren’t getting your pots and pans dirty with heating your food. So less mess in the kitchen and making meals is even quicker than ever.
I’m excited to share a new Raw Renewal recipe (a sneak peek!) so you can achieve all of the above with uncooking.
(Oh, and the healthy fats in avocado will do wonders for your skin and help give you that ever-famous raw glow! AND avocado provides nearly 20 essential nutrients including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B vitamins and folic acid).

In fact, I’m headed out to Kate’s 5th Grade Promotion Party at the beach. It’s 90 degrees! Holy hotness!
The sun is bright so while I soak up the sunshine, I’m pumping liquid sunshine in my cells.

Lime provides a vitamin C boost as well as a tart kick.
Mint enhances clear skin and helps with any tummy aches and bloating.

Power Green Juice Recipe
During the challenge, we are drinking (well, technically eating) lots of yummy veggies and fruits for 3 days.
For many, Day 2 of a juice cleanse is the make it or break it point. You’re now settled into the routine and not quite yet reaped the glowing rewards. Juicing is a commitment, and you are doing it.
If you’re struggling or feeling discouraged, please remember that you’re engaged in a process. Every step is a step forward. Acknowledge your progress and be willing to learn from your experiences.
We tend to be so hard on ourselves, but I bet you’ve already made HUGE leaps already. Keep going! You won’t regret it. Return to your original intentions you set before the cleanse. This will help you keep your eyes on the prize.
Remember to count on me and the gang for support. I just love our community!
Lots of juicy fun going on!
And I think I’m going to put on fancy shoes and sip my drink too! It’s a MUST!
Juicy Fun Fact:
So how does kale keep you looking young? Kale and other dark leafy greens like spinach, Swiss chard, and collards, have chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is what allows plants to absorb light from the sun and convert to into usable energy. You can think of it as the blood of the plant which is very similar to your blood. Chlorophyll is a super food. It helps you heal and detoxify the blood in the body. It boosts your immune system, improves circulation, cuts down on inflammation, and heads off free radicals. AND these suckers make us look and feel old.
Drinking a juice made of celery, kale and apple (for a bit of sweetness) can give you that youthful glow and keep you powered to get on with your day. Power Green is one of my favorite drinks for the hotness factor.
Let’s make it shall we?
Power Green
Juice up these ingredients:
1 cup kale
1 cup spinach
1 cup Swiss chard
2-3 celery stalks
1 apple
1 lemon (peeled)
Drink up!
Serves 1. Makes appr. 16 oz.

Slim Shady Beet Juice Recipe
During the challenge, we are drinking (well, technically eating) lots of yummy veggies and fruits for 3 days.
You’re juicing it up! Oh happy day!
On Day 1, make sure to keep busy. Do what you need to keep your mind off food because that hunger feeling can strike.
Basically you aren’t hungry as with one drink you can have 2 cucumbers, a bunch of kale, an apple, 1/2 a lemon, etc…
That’s a lot of food!
The hunger feeling is sometimes confused with dehydration. Think about the days, months (even a year!) before you got to your Day 1. Your body is now able to focus on cleaning out the yuk and re-balancing your system so it’s very likely you are catching up with your hydration.
Drink TONS of water; 1/2 your body weight in ounces. That way you can stave off any hunger pangs.
Another thing about juicing is that you’re able to bypass the digestive system because there is no way you can sit down and eat all that!
You are feeding your cells liquid nutrition immediately without the digestive system doing a lot of work to break down fiber.
Pay close attention to your body today. She is doing some work with getting rid of toxins so try to be gentle. If you need a nap, rest. If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water, and remind yourself that you are eating lots of greens, veggies and fruits; easing inflammation and preventing illness. Listen to your body.
Juicy fun fact:
Let’s hear it for beets! Beet juice is one of the best ways to help lower high blood pressure and boost athletic performance. The nitrates in the beets are known to help reduce blood pressure because of the protective affect they have on the walls of blood vessels.
According to the Journal of Applied Physiology, beet juice aids in recovery after exercise. It can help you get faster and last longer during your workouts. Looks like beet juice is a super star when it comes to boosting overall health!
Beets are also fantastic for endurance (wink wink) and vitality.
Try this power packed drink for your cleanse:
Slim Shady
Juice these ingredients:
2 beets (use stems)
3 carrots
1 apple
1 cup spinach
1/2 lemon (peeled)
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
Drink up!
Serves 1. Makes appr. 16 oz.

Soaring Energy Juice Recipe
I’ve been asked many times in my life…
What do you believe?
I don’t have to even take time to think about my answer. I know the truth instantly.
I believe that the body knows EVERYTHING. It does. Absolutely.
Have you ever gotten a feeling? Maybe in your body that tells you something is wrong or just not right? Or maybe your body gives you hints of unfailing happiness, joy and earth shattering love?
The pit in your stomach when you find out you’ve been betrayed. The flutter in your heart when you are about to do something that will change your life.
What is your body trying to tell you?
If we would stop giving so much power to the mind, the ego and just sit still, tap into our body’s wisdom, imagine a healing so strong that could prevent or reverse illness, disease, hate, self-loathing and perfectionism.
I’ve learned to listen closely to my lovely friend, my body.
In the past (although, it still comes up from time to time), I judged her, forced away any paid she tried to show me (signals for me to slow down, stop), even shunned self-love. I beat her up with negativity, judgement and ridicule.
For years. This went on for years and years until I started paying attention to how food, meditation, positive self-talk influenced my energetic being.
I’m now closer to my body, and I’m learning how to let go more and more everyday. I let her take care of me, keep me healthy, keep me dreaming big wonderful things, and keep me on the road to healing. I’ve learned to love her and to listen very closely for guidance.
If I could pick only one thing to believe in, the body’s wisdom wins. Completely.
A big part in listening to my body is when I eat (and drink) real food. There’s no covering up. No hiding. And I’m able to truly feel, be in my body, feel connected.
The fasted way to feeling the truth, feeling peace and connectedness is with juicing.
Juice changes your cells, and I witnessed this first hand.
I began to name my juice creations on my feelings. I named my Vibrancy drink after a class one day. I felt so light, alive!
, looking into the mirror after downing a green drink and seeing the glow, amazing glow across my face, bright eyes, beauty. I wanted that every damn day, fo’ sho’! So it’s my morning “coffee.”
I named my carrot drink Immune Booster after having a sore throat for days and immediately feeling relief (and no sign of a cold).
I have to have my juice everyday. My juice connects me to my truth. To that body wisdom I believe in.
Juicing has really given me the chance to serve others my truth, too.
I am leading a community cleanse called , so you, too, can get the juicy liquid nutrition into your cells, to feel that truth, that peace, and tap into what you believe in.
The cleanse is for 3 days. Just enough time to reap the results of shiny hair, glowing skin, sparkling eyes as well as a flat tummy.
Let’s start with a juice that will give you loads of energy instantly (this creation was named after my excellent two hour bike ride…the juice gave me tons of power!):
Soaring Energy Cocktail
Ingredients:
1/2-1 cup pineapple chunks (frozen) OR 1/2 a pineapple cored and chopped
1/2 lime, peeled
8 cherries, pitted
Juice ingredients.
Makes appr. 16 oz.
What do you say?
So, tell me, what do you believe? Share in the comments below and make sure to sip on Soaring Energy Cocktail. I hope you love it!

This year I want to offer something for those who haven’t been able to work with me yet. Sometimes financial things come up or timing isn’t right so this is a chance to take advantage of Pay What You Can.
If you always wanted to try my detoxes or delve into my yummy meal plans, here’s your chance.
I have made-for-you, already-done, oh-my-goodness clean eating kits available for the Pay What You Can special.
So here’s how it works:
1. Choose a fun kit to buy. Here are your options:
Spring Renewal Detox Kit: 10 day cleanse menu, 60 recipes, shopping list, cookbook, group support (original price $129)
Kickin’ It Clean Meal Plan Kit 1.0: 4 weeks of menu plans (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner for each day), 80+ recipes, shopping lists, extra cookbook and snack cheat sheet (focus on spring and summer months with smoothies and juices) (original $149)
Kickin’ It Clean Meal Plan Kit 2.0: 4 weeks of meal plans, 80+ recipes, shopping lists and extra cookbook and snack cheat sheet (focus on fall and winter soups and bowls) (original price $149)
OR order a bundle of all three! (worth $427)
2. Have the kits already but want to treat a friend?
If you already have one or all of the kits and would like to gift it to someone at a pay-what-you-can rate, absolutely. Contact us at info@wholehealthdesigns.com we can help you set this up.
3. A few guidelines:
The Pay What You Can event ends at midnight EDT, May 30th. Don’t miss this opportunity as we won’t offer it after the cut-off date and time.
This offer isn’t retroactive on kits you purchased in the past.
A suggested not lower than price is listed on each product page.
All products are digital and you can download all the goodies immediately.
If you have a question, contact us HERE. We’ll do everything possible to get back to you a.s.a.p.
I’ve detoxed and Kicked It Clean with thousands…a few love notes:
Lisa’s detox made my skin brighter and less puffy. My bloated belly disappeared! I lost 4 lbs, and I just loved eating healthy and waking up the next day without guilt. ~Julie H.
I loved EVERYTHING about Kickin’ It Clean! All of the recipes were delicious, and I really loved that a shopping list was included; really helped me stay organized! During the month, I realized that is was really simple to eat clean; not nearly as daunting as I had imagined. Plus the recipes are amazing…I didn’t feel like I was making any sacrifices. AND I had a lot more energy throughout the day. ~Ally T.
The menus were easy to follow and the food was delicious! Plus the detox was a good influence on my 8 year old daughter. I had more energy, lost several pounds, craved the greens and loved all the healthy foods! I also loved having the support of the group, and Lisa’s emails were a big help. I didn’t feel “alone” while I was doing the detox. And you still get to EAT during Lisa’s detoxes! I loved the whole process…thank you! ~Jenn A.
My heart is so happy about our Pay What You Can event. Giving brings me so much joy!
Let me know if you need anything regarding Pay What You Can! Excited to “get clean” with you!
PS. Remember, the super offer ends at 12 midnight, EDT May 30th.
