RRS: How I became an iron-bladdered superhero

It’s Oscar night. Will you watch? Our priority is “Walking Dead,” but I’m sure we’ll see a good bit of them. I have plenty of old Oscar and movie posts, so let’s avoid that today. Instead, here’s one from August 2013 that refers to an Alfred Hitchcock line about how films shouldn’t exceed the duration of the typical human bladder.

Best picture? It's "Gone With The Wind"

(707 words)

The movie industry will convene Sunday to announce the best movie of 2014. I can save them the trouble.

The best picture is “The Birdman.”

And I’ll go them one better.

The best picture ever is “Gone With The Wind.”

I made this determination Sunday after using my 52nd birthday as an excuse to make my family watch the 3:41 minute epic with me. It is the longest movie

Happy 50th birthday to these words (including two whopper profanities)

(2,081 words)

One of these days I’m going to revive my word history book proposal. The book is, “ZEITGUST! How Words Become Words and a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Dash at Dictionary Recognition.”

It’d be about the history of words, the introduction of the 60 or so words I’ve coined, and a series of daft stunts I’d pull off to try and insinuate my own coined words — particularly “zeitgust” —

RRS: Me & "Ticket To Ride" turn 52 today!

Today is my birthday! I’m 52. That means if years were degrees, I’d be 52 degrees warmer than the temperature outside. I’m glad this year’s birthday falls on a Sunday so I don’t feel obliged to blog about the mini-milestone. But it is a very happy day. My family makes me feel loved and I hear from so many friends, old and new. Makes me wish I could have a big party to thank everyone for

ValDay post on kinkiness, 50 Shades & my sex life

(709 words)

“Lola,” “You Really Got Me,” 20th Century Man,” — I’m one of those guys who loves The Kinks so much he doesn’t believe his life would be any better with any additional kinkiness.

Especially in the bedroom or wherever the situation arises.

It arises in other places, certainly, but inquisitive children and prudish sensibilities limit the recreational possibilities.

I'm getting paid to talk to 8th graders!

(748 words)

Got some great news Monday: I’m getting paid to talk to 8th graders!

The caller was an Allegheny County middle school principal. She said she’d seen my name on a list of uplifting and entertaining speakers.

“Kids in 8th grade really struggle with confidence,” she said. “We’d like you to come in right before the PSSA test and really encourage them. Can you do that?”

Cheney shot friend 9 years ago today; GOP shooting itself in foot ever since

(705 words)

It was nine years ago today that Vice President Dick Cheney blasted his friend Harry Whittington in the face with a shotgun from 30 yards away.

Don’t believe it? Next time you’re in Austin, grab a really, really big magnet and spin around in a circle and you’ll likely meet Whittington, 87. The right side of Whittington’s face and body still contains about 200 pellets Cheney

Caesar Flickerman not real so NBC will stay with Brian Williams

(662 words)

Brian Williams, we’re told, is taking a break from delivering the news while he reflects on how his exaggerations have smeared his reputation.

Don’t you believe it.

I suspect he’s right now rehearsing a news variety program that will showcase his many diverse talents. It wouldn’t surprise me if it involves Brian playing a banjo.

Because the people who are right now

Re-Run Sunday: Bananas & songs about monkeys

Have you had your morning banana yet? I try and eat one every day. This one from Feb. 2012 celebrates the fruit and all the great songs about monkeys — and as you’ll see many of our greatest bands/artists have recorded monkey songs.

Have a great Sunday!

I mentioned to a friend a while back that I felt self-conscious eating a banana in public, like I was afraid someone would snap a

Anti-vaxxers now wishing to be inoculated against public wrath

(705 words)

I’ve often talked — it’s really more of a boast — about how I’m on track to become the last man on earth without a single tattoo, piercing or other man-made deviation to my pristine skin.

It is a lie.

I have one on my left bicep just below my shoulder.

Dime-sized, it’s a permanent disfigurement, an epidermal bubbling that will forever denote me as a child of a certain
