Mom's going to Pitt! A body donation update
(638 words)
Got some great news the other day. Our girl has been accepted by the medical school at the University of Pittsburgh! We’re ecstatic and are already planning on stocking up on blue & gold sportswear for Saturdays this Fall.
Go Panthers!
This all comes as a bit of a surprise because our girl is 84 and she’s been dead since July 7.

RIP Mom: Why feeling sad is so elusive
(643 words)
I woke up Saturday for the first time in my life without either a Mommy or a Daddy.
I remember thinking I was glad I paid attention when they were teaching me how to tie my shoes.
Mom, 84, died peacefully Friday morning at 8:05. She’d shattered her left wrist in a Sunday evening fall at her apartment. The shock precipitated a cascading raft of maladies that led to

Mom's fallen & may not get back up
(676 words)
I’ve been the primary care giver for my darling 84-year-old mother since 2010 when she first began exhibiting signs of mild dementia. In the last two weeks under my primary care, the old gal’s been diagnosed with lung cancer, pneumonia, severe dementia and osteoporosis after falling in her kitchen and shattering her left wrist.
I think I’ve finally found my calling.

June tweets of the month!
This picture of me in my Tin Lizzy office was taken in '15 by my buddy Brian Henry. We spent the morning doing a bunch from all over this neat old landmark, which dates back to 1750. Sometimes when I'm feeling mischievous, I turn the "9" upside down so it'll confuse any deliverymen or women who come all the way up to the 3rd floor to deliver me an important package. This has never happened

Cool solutions to melting Antarctic
(649 words)
Alarming news about the rapidly melting Antarctic glaciers has me scrambling for silver linings. They say the inundation of as much as 13-feet of water could swamp global coastlines where 50 percent of the world’s population lives.
Could disaster be averted if everyone in the heartland started digging really deep backyard pools?
The problem isn’t having too much water.

Pledge Week results!

The people have spoken!
And they said, “Ehhh …”
My earnest, ballyhooed, passionate blog pledge drive landed with a thud. Total haul from six enthusiasts: $302.
That was two $100 donations, one $52, a $25, a $15 and a $10. Each donor will receive equal prominence on the acknowledgements page of my new “Use All The Crayons! II,” which I hope to have available for sale

Pledge Week: A bleak career assessment
(609 words)
I used to dream I’d one day become a great writer. A wiser man would have known it would have been better to dream he’d one day become a successful writer.
Big difference.
Am I a great writer? Lots of people say so. I think I’ve become exactly the kind of writer I always wanted to be, funny with a keen eye for offbeat observation. I know there are no other writers that

Random thoughts amidst unseemly Pledge Week begging
• I know many of you start each day with a cup of hot coffee. Since, oh, mid-April I’ve been starting each day by watching Ray Davies and the Jayhawks perform “Americana,” the title cut from Ray’s magnificent new album. I find it soothingly elevating.
• If it wasn’t pledge week, I’d today be writing about how I told my mother (84, dementia) a dear old cousin of hers had gotten eaten by a
