Featured - The Earl's Spitfire by Lindsay Downs

Sometimes I wonder whether author Lindsay Downs ever sleeps - there's always a new book out that I'm dying to feature on my blog! This time, let's give it up for "The Earl's Spitfire", whose cover I just love.
The Earl's Spitfire by Lindsay Downs The Earl's Spitfire by Lindsay Downs About the Book
Blurb

At a house party a midnight gallop on a purloined horse leads Lady Sophia Walker into something she wasn’t expecting-a marriage proposal.
Barely knowing Lord Peter Gardner, 7th Earl of Modbury, Sophia devises a unique plan to make sure they will get along.
What neither realizes, there’s another, Lady Agatha Crumbly, wishes to become Lord Gardner’s countess and will stop at nothing to achieve her goal.
Returning to London Peter lives up to his promise. As they learn about each other he soon finds out she has an affinity for a certain flower. To help prove his devotion to her he proceeds to deck out his town carriage in them.
As the date of their wedding quickly approaches Lady Crumbly makes another appearance, this time threatening Sophia.
Will Lord Peter Gardner arrive in time to save his beloved from death, or will the other win what she wants?

Excerpt

“Fear not, my dear daughter. You’re not in trouble with Lord Gardner. It would appear he and Father have concluded the marriage contract negotiations. The meeting is so the document can be signed, that’s all. Don’t worry. Your father made sure you were well taken care of and have a comfortable allowance provided,” the countess told her.
Sophia breathed a sigh of relief on learning she wasn’t in trouble and she’d be looked after. However, there were several conditions she wanted included to assure Lord Gardner not only had affections for her, but would keep his word in regards to his horse. She bestowed a smile and curtsey to her mother before she excused herself then quickly and quietly made her way to the earl’s office.
After making sure the room was vacant, she slipped in and found the document in question resting on top of his desk. Taking the quill pen from its holder she dipped it in the inkwell and added her codicils at the bottom. That done, she sought out Dawne and changed into her riding habit.
Last night when she rode Scarlett Show she’d not wanted to risk going over fences but now was another matter altogether. Today she would try him over a few rails but in the riding ring behind the stables.
As she made her way to the barn, several of the ladies and gentlemen guests joined her, all congratulating her on being engaged to the earl and enquired why she was dressed for riding. Not wanting to spoil the surprise, Sophia decided to keep her own counsel.
“Might I suggest everyone wait at the fence line as I’ll be out shortly,” she politely informed her followers.
A few minutes later, with Hanbury at her side, Sophia rode out on Scarlett Show to the oohs and aahs of her friends.
With a few whispered words to her mount, she rode the massive beast around the ring getting the feel of him as she was riding side saddle. When Sophia received a nod from the stable master, she waited until the man was clear, for both their safety, she turned the horse to the jump.
Clearing it with ease, she asked Hanbury to raise the rails a little higher and repeated the exercise.
Pleased with herself, not bragging as it wasn’t ladylike, she guided Scarlett Show to the fence where the others were watching. As she scanned their faces, she saw one in particular standing on the outside of the group propped against the railing. The one person she wanted to avoid. Lord Gardner. He was relaxed, arms easily crossed over his chest and a pleasing smile on his lips.
Sophia overheard Lord Gardner instruct a groom to add a railing, then with a nod to him she took the fence without a problem.
Minutes later, she rode the massive horse up to where everyone was watching only to see the earl walk up to her. Before she could say or do anything, Sophia found herself standing on the ground, his hands around her waist. His touch on her made her heart race. Would he be able to hear it beating in her chest? As his hand enveloped her she could feel a dampness between her thighs.

About the Author
What does it take to be a bestselling author? Determination, skill, talent, luck or taking a risk with a venture into a totally new genre. For me it was a little of some and a lot of the others.

In 2008 when I got two books published I thought it was due to skill; little did I know it was more luck than anything. Over the next three years I wrote, submitted, got rejected. I then did what I tell everyone who asks; I wrote some more. I didn’t give up.
More on a dare than anything I tried my hand at a regency, one of the most difficult genres because of the rules, which I might add I broke almost every one. Within two days of its release the book was on a best seller list and stayed there for two months.
Turns out it is all of the aforementioned.
After two failed marriages, one from divorce while with the other died unexpectedly I decided upon retirement to move. That opportunity came in September 2012 when I migrated to Texas.
For me, as a multipublished author, it was one of the best things I’ve done to date. Now, every day I can write, creating stories to take my readers to places they can only dream about.
I’m also a member of the Published Authors Network (PAN) by the Romance Writers of America (RWA).

Blog Tour - New Release by Juliet Madison

I read and loved "Starstruck in Seattle" by Juliet Madison, so I'm really happy to be part of the blog tour for her new release "Haunted Ever After". Prepare yourselves for lots of awesome below.
Haunted Ever After by Juliet Madison Haunted Ever After by Juliet Madison About the Book
Mixing romance, humour and a sparkle of magic, Juliet Madison is back with a new full-length novel about a bride-to-be, a mystery and the stripper next door.

When bride-to-be Sally Marsh attends a weekend away with her bridesmaids, the last thing she expects is an uninvited guest: the ghost of her fiancé's ex-girlfriend.
Red is quirky, loud and distracting, and Sally is soon desperate to find the reason behind her presence, so she can rid herself of her embarrassing shadow before the wedding day. Unfortunately, the ghost is reluctant to share the reason for her existence, but very enthusiastic about Ty, the surprise hen’s night stripper who keeps showing up at awkward moments.
Time is running out for Sally, but it’s also running out for Red. By the time all is revealed, Sally will be tested to the limits, and go above and beyond everything she’s ever believed in order to ensure not only her own happy-ever-after – but Red’s as well.

Excerpt:

‘I can’t believe how different I feel; the pain, the suffering — it’s all gone. I feel so light and free.’ She looked at me and smiled. ‘You and I are going to have so much fun!’ My body shook even more and the woman’s smile turned into a curious stare. ‘Why are you so scared? I’m not going to hurt you.’
Her words seemed genuine but still I trembled, unable to comprehend what was happening.
She perched herself on the dining table and crossed her legs.
‘Who...’ my voice joined in the shaking, ‘who are you?’
She flicked her hand as if the answer was nothing important. ‘Oh, I’m just a boring housewife.’ She chuckled.
‘And...you’re a...ghost or something?’
But I don’t believe in ghosts.
The woman scanned her body like she was looking for a stain. ‘Ha! I didn’t even notice how see-through I am.’ She looked up and nodded. ‘I guess so, I never really thought of myself as a...’ she curved her fingers like quotation marks, ‘...ghost. Until now, I just thought of myself the way I’ve always been — only lighter in body and clearer in mind.’
Oh boy. As long as I wasn’t hallucinating, this was real.
A real live ghost was in my house!
I mean...not live...but, you know. ‘So, um... you were like, a real person, and then you um...’
‘Died, yes,’ she said, with such acceptance.
‘Why are you here? Why me? I don’t recognise you at all. Shouldn’t you be haunting people you knew in real life?’
‘I tried, but couldn’t. And it’s too...’
‘Too what?’
Her eyes glazed over for a moment and she flicked her pale hand. ‘Nothing. Anyway, I ended up here.’
‘So it’s random? You stuck your hand in a hat with names of potential scaredy-cats to haunt and plucked me out?’
She uncrossed her legs and crossed them again. ‘Not exactly. We are connected. The thing is, I used to date someone you know.’
Whoa. ‘Who?’
Her slender hand rose and a long finger pointed in the direction of the bookcase behind me that displayed an array of happy snaps. Unless she was gay (and one of my friends had kept their preference for women hidden from me), there were only three possible options:
1. My brother, Rick.
2. My friend and colleague, Dale.
Or...
The front door opened. ‘Sally, honey, what are you doing up?’
3. Or Greg. The man I’d be marrying in two weeks.

Teaser Tuesday: Visual Inspiration for "Kaleidoscope of Hopes"

I have a vivid imagination, so I can often picture my own (and other people's) writing like a movie. I also react strongly to visual writing prompts and images. So, for this week's Teaser Tuesday, here is a look at what you'll find in the contemporary romance novel that I have finished editing and submitted to a few beta readers - Kaleidoscope of Hopes.
Picture Picture This is Nadia's outfit for the dinner party where she and her boss try to save the advertising firm. And this is the reaction:
If not for all the trepidation, she would have felt like a million dollars.
His next words shook her out of her memories. His hungry gaze made the blush and the tingling sensation inside her body intensify.
“In fact, you’re much too beautiful for all these people to ogle you. I would love to keep you all to myself.”

Picture This is a small present Nadia receives from Lucas under rather strange circumstances. And here's the reaction:
The simple elegance and playful beauty of it almost brought tears to her eyes. Or was it his meaningful gesture that made her worry she’d turn into a blubbering fool?
“I…I can’t accept any gifts from you.”
“Why not?”
She searched in vain for a reply that wouldn’t offend him. Because they weren’t friends or lovers? Because he was her boss in more than one way? Because accepting the gift meant acknowledging the tender bond forming between them? Because expectations might be connected to this? She couldn’t think straight with him so overwhelmingly close, and the pendent so perfect. When she remained silent, Lucas used his free hand to grab hers. He let the pendant slide into her palm, the touch of his fingers against hers setting her heart beat racing.
“Say thank you.”
His tone was half playful and half persuasive.
“Thank you.”
He let go of her hand, and her fingers curled around the dolphin. It felt heavy as lead and so hot it might burn a hole into her palm.

Top 10: Top Ten Reasons Romantic Suspense is the Best Genre to Read and to Write

#10 - It’s two genres in one, because romantic suspense readers require more complexity to their stories.

#9 - Most of the heroes that get shot are healed within twenty pages.

#8 - Evil can lurk inside everyone, including the heroine.

#7 - Readers know the difference between a gun clip and a magazine and expect the writer to know this as well.

#6 - There’s no time for a sagging story middle when someone is chasing the hero and heroine.

#5 - Shoot them, punch them, stab them. It doesn't matter, because the hero and heroine always survive.

#4 - The villain is revealed in the first third of the book so you can worry more about how he’ll die than who he is.

#3 - There’s no room for romantic misunderstandings, the conflict is real and trying to kill you.

#2 - Characters who are “too stupid to live” die, leaving kick ass heroines and the hunky guys that stay with them. ...and the Number One Reason Romantic Suspense is the Best Genre to Read and to Write:

#1 - Steamy scenes in the middle of a gun battle: hot, fast, dangerous.

Astrologer Vidyasagar insists that she would get back with her husband Veerendra. Does anyone want to know if she wants to do that?  Chanda feels torn between the man she has fallen for and the family values that have been instilled in her. Will she ever find happiness?  About the Author Even as a kid, Sundari Venkatraman absolutely loved the 'lived happily ever after' syndrome as she grew up reading all the fairy tales she could lay her hands on, Phantom comics, Mandrake comics and the like. It was always about good triumphing over evil and a happy end. Soon, into her teens, she switched her attention from fairy tales to Mills & Boon. While she loved reading both of these, she kept visualising what would have happened if there were similar situations happening in India; to a local hero and heroine. Her imagination took flight and she always lived in a rosy cocoon of romance over the years. Then came the writing - a true bolt out of the blue! She could never string two sentences together. While her spoken English had always been excellent - thanks to her Grandpa - she could not write to save her life. She was bad at writing essays in both school and college. Later, when it was time to teach her kids, she could manage everything from Science to Mathematics and History & Geography. When it came to writing compositions, her kids found her of no help at all. All this changed suddenly one fine day in the year 2000. She had just quit her job at a school's office and did not know what to do with her life. She was saturated with simply reading books. That's when she got home one evening after her walk and took some sheets of paper and began writing. It was like watching a movie that was running in her head - all those years of visualising Indian heroes and heroines needed an outlet and had to be put into words. That's how her first novel, The Malhotra Bride, took shape. While she felt discouraged when publishing did not happen, it was her husband who kept encouraging her not to give up. There was no looking back after that. While publishing took a long time happening, Sundari continued to write novels and then short stories. Her luck turned when Indireads approached her to write for them and Double Jeopardy was born. Now it’s all about self-publishing her books on Amazon. Her first self-published book is The Malhotra Bride (2nd Edition) in February 2014. Then came Meghna in June 2014. And now it's time to unveil The Runaway Bridegroom, all set to release on September 13, 2014. Are you ready???????????? 5 4 3 2 1 0 . . . . . Presenting.... Fun Friday - Snippets from my Books

Thought I'd do something different this week and post excerpts from my books where the protagonists laugh. Happy Fun Friday!
Fun Friday Snippet: When I see your Face
Her stomach growled at the sight and she couldn’t help but laugh at herself. What a difference exercise and charming company could make. She actually felt so hungry she could devour a whole buffet. As if he had read her thoughts, he turned to her and spread his arm across the improvised picnic in an exaggerated gesture.
“Madam, if you please, here’s your buffet waiting for you. Choice left-overs from here and there and everywhere, specially prepared for hard working, starving gardeners. Please allow me to draw back your chair for you, madam. Oh, we don’t have chairs. Please feel free to sit down on this rather coarse and much too small sheet in the grass and start gobbling before I steal all the food because I’m positively famished.”
Michael looked so comical and the French accent that accompanied his words was so hilariously exaggerated that she found herself giggling like a schoolgirl, her hand over her mouth. When had she laughed or giggled the last time?
For a second, there was an unreadable expression on his face when he looked right at her laughing, defenseless face. What was it in his eyes, darkening them to a deep-sea blue with slate grey dots and burning into her? Desire? Her stomach was much too agitated for her mind to work properly, so she managed to tear her gaze from his and plonked down onto the sheet gracelessly.

Fun Friday Snippet: Playing with Fire
There was the slightest of jerks when her rope had played out fully, but the fall felt surprisingly smooth and long. The band stretched and slackened, and she bounced and swung a little from side to side like a puppet on a string, too caught up in the moment to take in the view.
Before she knew it, Felicia wasn’t screaming, but laughing breathlessly.
The long drop and sudden stop had cranked up the adrenaline, almost like the fire magic did, but without any effort or any loss of energy or the need to exercise control.
In slow motion, she felt them extend the rope and lower her onto the grass where her legs gave way, and the world felt oddly upside down.
She barely realized what was happening around her, her breath escaping in a gasp when Joshua ran to her and engulfed her in a tight hug, lifting her feet off the ground to spin her around.
And in that moment, laughing again and feeling deliciously dizzy, she realized one thing.
She loved him.

~Excerpt~
“Carson, I’m freely offering myself to you right now. Please.” I plead fearlessly. I’m shameless and not above begging for him to take my body. Who is this sex-craved woman anyways?
“Sweetness, you’re making it very difficult for me to resist you, to control myself.” He lowers himself intimately close to graze his soft, moist lips on my forehead, bridge of my nose and then intensely over my lips. The urgency of his need for me is translated through his kisses. Biting down firmly on his lower lip, it appears that he’s forcing the strength of his will to remain tame. Our eye contact is broken when he seals his shut to blind the temptation lying beneath his body. His hands grip the sheets desperately, clawing and then fisting. I think this is his last hope of hanging onto his dignity. “Goodnight Lily, only offer your body to me when you believe it in your heart,” he murmurs and rolls off me.

Book Club Tour: Trouble Has a New Name by Adite Banerjie - Ask the Author

So happy that I am once again part of an amazing blog tour by The Book Club. This time, I got the chance to nag Indian author Adite Banerjie with a few questions. Let her take over the stage!
Picture Author Interview with Adite Banerjie
What do you like most about being a writer? What do you like least?
I love creating characters, plotting their story and seeing them come to life. Sometimes, after outlining a scene, I’m taken by surprise when the characters decide to chart their own course and the scene turns out so much better than what I had originally planned.
The part I struggle with most with is when my lead characters are going through their black moments. Sounds strange, but their negativity gets me down too!

What would you say is the most valuable thing you have learned while working as a business journalist?
If your creative work has a price tag on it, it is a product (no matter how crass that sounds). And every product needs to be promoted. If you’re wondering what kind of business writing I did…I wrote about advertising and marketing!

In "The Indian Tycoon's Marriage Deal", you used the symbol of lavender roses beautifully. Is there a similar symbol or a motif in "Trouble Has a New Name"?
Yes, there is, but it’s not as prominent as the lavender rose was in The Indian Tycoon…
In Trouble Has a New Name, I have used different elements of the ocean—colour, sea shells, corals, etc.—as motifs to connect with the protagonist and her emotions. Even the Hero’s name –Neel—is inspired by the ocean.

Use these 5 words to write a mini-story: time, money, heart, woman, luck.
With time running out, a down on luck woman needs to rustle up the money to save her child who needs a heart transplant.

Please tell us more about your (writing) plans for the future.
I am currently working on a romantic-thriller which is set in London, Delhi and Rajasthan.

Thank you, Devika, for these fun questions and for hosting me on your site.

Ask the Author - Interview with Mia Epsilon

Please let me shine the light on another awesome author and fantastic friend of mine, Mia Epsilon. She recently joined other writers for the WONDERLAND TALES collection of short stories revolving around a fresh take on "Alice in Wonderland". Let's have a round of applause for today's interview candidate!
Leave Your Hat On by Mia Epsilon Leave Your Hat On by Mia Epsilon 10 questions with Mia Epsilon
What do you like most and least about being a writer?
Most: I can share the characters and their stories which dance and often scream through my head. I love that gift, the gift of storytelling with written words.
Least: The promotional aspect of being a published writer is daunting. I'm not very good at 'putting myself out there' since I'm a fairly shy person and I believe writers are, by nature, introverts.

How does being a teacher and principal influence your writing?
I would say being a principal influences my writing in the ability to multitask. It's rare I'm ever doing only one thing at a time 'in my day job' so this juggling of tasks helps me focus and sort through the story arches and characters in my head so I can get them down on paper once I get to sit down and listen fully to them.
As a teacher, writing helps me hone the skills I teach; I'm more mindful of words I say, and especially of how I physically write words, sentences and phrases. I use much free reading time and story hours in my classrooms; I firmly believe a child who grows up loving written words and to read is more successful (and certainly more happy) in life.

What was the hardest part about writing your romance novel “Wedding Belle Blues”?
In the actual writing of this novel, the hardest part was to stop writing to go to my school. I wake a few hours before I am due at work to write; this is my sacred, do-nothing-but-write time. Yet, I would become involved in the scene or chapter and not want to stop. I would grumble the entire way to work and couldn't wait some afternoons to get home.

Any hidden talents or crazy facts about you?
I'm amazing at the card game 'trash'. I absolutely stink at video games and don't dare try those Facebook ones like Candy Crush for fear I'll become hopelessly addicted. I'm a Doctor Who fan married to a Doctor Who fan and have a Tardis tea service.

What inspired you to be part of “Wonderland Tales”?
My editor's great big whip. Actually, my editor suggested I write a "Wonderland Tale" and I told her I had no idea what I'd write. So she gathered 4-5 fellow Breathless Press Authors on a Skype call and we brainstormed ideas until each of us had our basic plot and characters. Then our work as writers began.

What’s your favourite and least favourite genre (writing and reading)?
My favorite is Romance, all kinds and sub genres. I absolutely adore reading about what makes and keeps people in love. My least favorite is Political, because I feel everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and it's not up to me or anyone to try to change that opinion. Give the facts and let each person decide.

Tell us about the one thing you can’t write without.
I need to have a couple of bottles of water, because it makes me stop furiously typing, take a breath, take a swallow, and then start with fresh energy.

Do you have any advice for (aspiring) authors?
Write every day and never give up. No doubt you have heard that before. It's true. Get in the habit of having set writing time, even if you write nothing productive. Consider each rejection as a lesson and learn something from it.

As the title of your Alice-inspired tale is “Leave Your Hat On”, are you a hat fan? Anything to say in favour of hats and mad hatters?
Oh I LOVE hats! I can recall my mom dressing up for church, with hat and gloves. She and her lady friends went to the 'beauty shop' every Saturday to have their hair done and she would take her hat for the next day to see if her hair would be perfect.
And there's just something about a man in a top hat, elegance and charm coupled with sexiness…mmmm. And Mad Hatters are probably the sanest people one ever meets!

What are you currently working on?
I'm working on the next book in the 'Weddings by C & C' series. Anna's (from Wedding Belle Blues) mom's story, 'Take a Chance on Me' is due out later this year, and her brother Adam is currently trying to charm my editor. I also have two short stories featuring these characters out later this year.

Book Club Blog Tour - Choices by Ruchira Khanna

Choices by Ruchira Khanna

The Blurb Leonardo is a young man who is standing on a crossroad of life, facing choices. One road leads to a high stress career that brings in big bucks; the other is a chance to make a real difference in lives of others. He has a few questions, questions that all of us have faced when facing choices that can change our lives. Does fate make a man, or do his desires? Do ambitions and desires actually lead a person to true happiness and fulfillment, or does providence and life changing events actually show a person the true path to follow?
‘Choices’ raises these questions, and attempts to answer them. It is a slice-of-life, a book written from the heart.(

Meet the Author

Choices: A Novel talks about how we all come to crossroads in our respective lives, and then the impact it makes by a choice we make.
A biochemist by profession made a mere choice of enrolling myself into a technical writing course. Now, little did I know that this small decision would take me on a path to creative writing and eventually publishing a novel.

This novel, Choices helps answer many questions about man's ambitions and desires and how is it a road towards happiness and contentment that could eventually become your destiny. This is a "slice-of-life" genre thus, impacting all humans who have made a choice sometime or the other in this lifetime!
