Sneak Peek Sunday: Excerpt from "Playing with Fire"

Book 1 of the paranormal romance series "4 Elements of Love" is available now. You can buy "Playing with Fire" here or add it to your Goodreads list here. For those who want to know more, I'm sharing another excerpt for this week's Sunday Sneak Peek.
Picture The Fire From Within by Helius Flame. This was the artwork that inspired the story. It can be found here: http://heliusflame.deviantart.com/art...
There was a wall of fire blocking her exit.
She knew she could escape it unharmed, but what about the child clinging to her, coughing and crying, choking and trembling so hard her own body shook along with the movement?
She turned to the window, biting her lip.
To jump or not to jump?
By now, the air was filled with dense, coiling smoke and unrelenting heat melting the wallpaper. The child’s screams had stopped, leaving behind a frightening silence, cloaking the fire’s rage and for the first time making her afraid.
What happened next was a blur, a succession of movement that seemed to involve somebody else and not her.
Shielding the child, a lifeless lump with its weight doubled, she faced the flames. All of a sudden, she knew what to do.
Raising herself to her full height and thinking of her dragon, she stared into the fire and whispered a fierce command.
“Let me through.”
For a moment, there was no reaction, and she bit her lip again, so hard that the salty, metallic taste of blood mingled with the smoke. She squared her shoulders, exerted pressure to radiate her own wild heat, drew a deep breath and shouted, “Let me through!”
The impossible happened.
The flames withdrew on themselves ever so slightly, parting with obvious reluctance to create a small opening in the curtain of fire. Within moments, she had hurled herself through and along the passage, nearly tripping while navigating the half-burned-away staircase. To her right and left, flames touched her arms and legs, but no other wall of fire blocked her way. She shot out of the gaping, fire-filled hole that had once been a solid, locked front door, like a bullet from the mouth of a (more than) smoking gun.
Her legs carried her farther and farther, and then no more.
Everything went blissfully blank.

Ask the Author - Interview with Renita D'Silva

Oh, how I love interviewing my writer friends! There's always something new to learn, something in common to discover, and something special about their books revealed. Today, I'm happy to introduce you all to Indian author Renita D'Silva - who almost shares a surname with me (my maiden name is de Silva).
Don't you just love those book covers? All 3 of her novels will make their way onto my TBR list!

Picture Monsoon Memories by Renita D'Silva 10 questions with Renita D'Silva
What do you like most – and least – about being a writer?

What I like most is the feedback from readers all over the world. The bad reviews hurt of course, but are far outweighed by the good ones. When you have spent so long with the characters, and the story, it is nice to know what others think of it. What I like least… hmm… I love everything about being a writer to be honest. I fantasized about being one for so long, was reluctant to call myself one until I was published and now, I love it all. Maybe if pushed, I would say it is trying to fit writing into snatches of borrowed time. I would love to write full time one day.

Do you prefer a specific genre for reading and writing?

For reading, no. I like to read across genres, I read anything and everything. While writing I seem to gravitate towards family dramas, the secrets we keep from those closest to us and how they affect everyone involved.

Your first book is titled “Monsoon Memories”. What does the monsoon mean to you?

I love the monsoons, always have. The smell of churned earth; the sheen Mother Nature paints on a dust stained world, making it sparkle; splashing through the puddles, wet clothes sticking to your back; emerald fields glowing silver as they are bejeweled by a necklace of raindrops; the shimmering, undulating sea of bobbing umbrellas; sitting cozy on the veranda sipping spiced tea and eating red rice with fish curry while the rain incites the world into rebellion and drums a tango on the tiles. Yes, I love the monsoons.

Any favourite books and authors? Sorry if choosing is a difficult task…

Yes, choosing is difficult. How did you guess? J I read so much and my favourites keep shifting and growing, the list too big to contain. My favourite book of all time is ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee. Arundhati Roy’s ‘The God of Small Things’ shaped my young adulthood as did ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘The Thorn Birds’. Now I enjoy Margaret Atwood, Hilary Mantel, Markus Zusak, Alice Munro, Maggie O Farrell, Chimamanda Ngosi Adiche, Aravinda Adiga, Kiran Desai… the list is endless.

Adoption plays an important role in your new book “The Forgotten Daughter”. Do you think an adopted child should be told?

I think it is better to tell the child, especially in this day and age, when there are so many ways of finding out. But then that is just my opinion. All families are different, and ultimately it depends on the family and the child in question and also the circumstances surrounding the adoption. If the child has suffered trauma before adoption, then the adoptive parents might decide to withhold the truth from him/her thinking they were acting in the child’s best interests. And also, there is the question of when to tell. It is really a very hard decision to make, but I would say, it is always better to be open so then the child learns to trust rather than have her trust shattered by the truth. If she caught her parents out in a lie, it might do more damage than being informed of the truth might have done and rupture the fragile relationship between her and her parents which is, at the best of times, in most families, quite fraught without this added upset churned into the mix.

What makes your writing special?

Ah, that’s a tough one. I write because I have to, I am compelled to, it completes me. It’s been said that there are only seven plots and what you make of them, your take on the story, how you own it, is what makes your story unique, special. Every one of my stories begin as a picture in my head. Over time the pictures get embellished with detail, the characters grow from two dimensional to three, they populate my head and nag at me to tell their story. I am just a conduit, obeying the incessant demands of my characters. If, when I read back what I have written, I can see the picture haunting my head, if the characters are happy with my portrayal of them, then I feel I have succeeded.

Is there a question you have always hoped somebody would ask you? (Feel free to answer it, too.)

I love talking about books. I could talk about books and stories until eternity. I am the person who never leaves the house without a book and a spare, who shamelessly peers over the shoulder of the person sitting next to me in buses or trains to see what they are reading, who puts roots down in a bookstore and will not budge from there. I think if someone asked me, ‘What are you reading?’ I would be delighted because I could then ask it back of them and we could have a conversation about our favourite books and authors.

Complete this sentence: A writer’s most important tool is…

Imagination. The ability to take a snatched phrase, a throwaway remark and create a story around it.

If you were sent away to a deserted island, what 5 things would you take with you?

Books, books, books, books and more books. The first items I pack when we are going on holiday are…yes, you guessed it, books. I have an absolute horror of running out of books to read; that is the worst possible thing I can imagine. So yes, I don’t think I would give a toss about what I would eat/drink/wear on a desert island. I would stuff my suitcase – if I was allowed it – with books.

Please tell us more about your latest book(s) and plans for the future.

My debut, ‘Monsoon Memories’ is out now in India. It made the Asian Age Top Ten bestseller list in India recently.

My second book, ‘The Forgotten Daughter’ and my latest book, ‘The Stolen Girl’ are under consideration with publishers in India. ‘The Forgotten Daughter’ made the top 100 in Amazon UK and Canada and became a Number 1 bestseller in Women’s Literary Fiction. ‘The Stolen Girl’ will be out in the UK and the rest of the world with the exception of India on September the 12th.

Plans for the future… Hopefully I will continue to create stories. That is what I love doing best.

Thanks so much for hosting me on your wonderful blog. It’s been such a pleasure.

New book for the "4 Elements of Love" series

My latest release, Playing with Fire, is the first book of the paranormal romance series "4 Elements of Love". Each novel can be read as a stand-alone with a happy end and a separate cast of characters.

The first element I chose was FIRE, and the book is available here:
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LYMQ9NK
Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/459630
Createspace (paperback): https://www.createspace.com/4905679

Book 2 is called "In Deep Water" and I'm focusing on the element WATER. I've written two chapters so far, and I want to reveal a bit more about it here:
In Deep Water
What if all the legends about mermaids and the lost city of Atlantis carry a nugget of truth inside them?

When Wendy is hired by a dubious multi-million-dollar corporation to investigate the corals covering a ship wreck off the island of Serendipity, her world gets turned upside down. She discovers a lost city under the ocean – and falls in love with Calder, the partner she has been assigned. The shocking truth about the hidden underwater world leads Wendy to self-discovery.

Should she give in to Calder’s persuasive charm? Can they use their magic to prevent a tragic disaster?

Poem to "Playing with Fire"

I wrote this poem last year, long before my paranormal romance novel "Playing with Fire" was born. Yesterday, I realized how well it fits the theme of the story, but in the use of 'hot' and 'cold' metaphors / similes matching Felicia (Fire) and Joshua (Ice) and in wanting self-realization.
Let me be myself
I don’t want to be
The sun that brightly burns, mercilessly illuminates and scorches
Instead let me be
The moon that lights the night gently like a million helpful torches
I don’t want to be
The fire whose passionate flames know never when it is enough
Instead let me be
The water that nourishes, engulfs and selflessly showers with love
I don’t want to be
The city that busily churns, ever expands and shamelessly sprawls
Instead let me be
The forest in which a soft green carpet of soothing silence falls
I don’t want to be
The lion that in fierce lonely majesty rules above others
Instead let me be
The lamb that wisely sees everyone as unequal brothers
I don’t want to be
The flower whose beauty and intoxicating scent charm all
Instead let me be
The tree that firmly rooted in the ground calmly stands tall
I don’t want to be
The bird that flashes fluorescent feathers and splendidly rises
Instead let me be
The fish that beneath the surface comes in all shapes and sizes
I don’t want to be
The star of the show that is everybody’s darling and invincible
Instead let me be
My own self that is human and so in a unique way irresistible

…Suddenly, he saw something shiny at the bottom of the abyss. He squinted his eyes to see what it was. He ran back to his binoculars and turned them to see what it was. Sharp barbed wires that separated the two mountains came into focus. He had come as far as he could in his country. But she was standing in another country.

He was in South India and she was in North India…

Have you ever imagined India being divided into two countries? What happens to the millions of Indians who are from South India but are now residing in North India? Kaahi & Jai were two such people who got trapped in this situation. Everything was going smoothly for them and suddenly, their world turned upside down.

How will they get together? Will India become one again?

Take an exciting journey with them from their college days in Mumbai to their life in the US and back to India when they find out that India is divided.

GET TO KNOW HIM

The author was born and raised in Mumbai, India. He came to the US in 1989 and lived in New York. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
The Author calls himself An Indian. We have no pics of him. But the Author does have something to say to every Indian out there....

Dear Readers,

I wanted to tell a story peppering it with Indian languages and narrating my experiences, inter-weaving them with some imaginary tale. When I mentioned this idea to my wife, her very first question was, "who is your target-audience?" That made me "think outside the box". After reading the book, you'll agree that there is no target-audience. I'd say - 10+, any sex, from any country, any ethnicity, any religion - is the intended audience.

When I wanted to tell a story, I wanted to "lull" the reader into thinking that they are just reading a travelogue. Making them wonder where (if at all anywhere) the story is going. Is it just another boring experience written by a NRI? AND THEN BOOM. It hits you. Suddenly, along with the characters, the reader's dream-world shatters.

This book is broken up in 3 parts. And it is intentional. Let me explain why.

The first part is about the Indian culture. Most Indians (in India) already know it. But what about NRIs? They may find it nostalgic. And what about their kids. They may have a better understanding about their roots and culture. And the non-Indian find it very fascinating.

The second part is about life in the US. Readers who are in the US may find it a bit like a travelogue. However, others may find it very interesting. Those who can't be here get a glimpse into the US life of an Indian (and the US life in general).

The third part is for everyone.

Hence, you'll notice that different people react differently to this book. There is something for everyone.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you,
An Indian

The author was born and raised in Mumbai, India. He came to the US in 1989 and lived in New York.  This book is for those who like travel, history, romance, culture, cuisine, sports, political-thriller, etc. It’s dubbed as a realistic-fiction. A fiction based on some real events.  He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

Meet the Author

Ann McGinnis writes about characters that let their egos and sense of justice rule their lives, while they protect the public from serial killers and unthinkable crimes. Of course, Ann's characters always find a way to blow off steam -- romantically! As a writer, Ann comes from the world of action/thrillers and screenwriting. She has two scripts currently in development. A third script, about a spunky FBI analyst, is the basis of "Scarlet Revenge" and the main character Caycee Scarlet. It is the first book in a series, with Book 2 “Scarlet Envy” coming out in September 2014.
