Featured - Book Spotlight for "Shadows" by Thorne Moore

Picture About the Book Genre: domestic noir. Psychological Crime. Women’s lit. Paranormal.
Release Date: 14 June 2017
Publisher: Endeavour Press

Kate Lawrence can sense the shadow of violent death, past and present. In her struggle to cope with her unwelcome gift, she has frozen people out of her life. Her marriage is on the rocks, her career is in chaos and she urgently needs to get a grip.
So she decides to start again, by joining her effervescent cousin Sylvia and partner Michael in their mission to restore and revitalise Llys y Garn, an old mansion in the wilds of North Pembrokeshire.
It is certainly a new start, as she takes on Sylvia’s grandiose schemes, but it brings Kate to a place that is thick with the shadows of past deaths. The house and grounds are full of mysteries that only she can sense, but she is determined to face them down – so determined that she fails to notice that ancient energies are not the only shadows threatening the seemingly idyllic world of Llys y Garn.
The happy equilibrium is disrupted by the arrival of Sylvia’s sadistic and manipulative son, Christian - but just how dangerous is he?
Then, once more, Kate senses that a violent death has occurred…
Set in the majestic and magical Welsh countryside, Shadows is a haunting exploration of the dark side of people and landscape.

‘Is it haunted, Kate?’ Sylvia clapped her hands, like a child wanting ice-cream. ‘Oh please, please say there’s a ghost down here.’
‘There’s a ghost down here.’
‘No seriously, please tell me. You’d sense one, I know.’
What the hell. I closed my eyes solemnly. ‘I detect – a definite shiver of fear.’
‘Is that all? I was hoping for a white lady. If only we had battlements. I’m sure we’d have had a white lady, walking in the moonlight.’
‘Perhaps we can persuade one to move in.’
‘Yes!’ Sylvia gripped my arm. ‘A ghost hotel! We could get a licence to serve spirits!’
We were still laughing as we climbed back to the buttery. To finish, she led me on into the second small room, under the upper chamber.
As before, a low square room. One tiny window, two doors, stained walls, stone floor, just another empty room. ‘Not sure what to call this one,’ babbled my cousin. ‘Think of a good name. The armoury! I wonder if we could get a suit of armour.’ She was already opening the far door, into a panelled arch through deep masonry back into the Great Hall.
Just a doorway to Sylvia.
But not to me. Oh God, not to me.
‘Come on,’ she sang. ‘Where next?’
I watched her pass through, amazed that she could sense nothing. Rigid in my determination to conquer, I followed her, trying to block out the shadow, to refuse it entry into my brain.
I couldn’t. It overwhelmed my defences, enveloping me in a black cloud. Huge atavistic fear, searing thirst, gut-wrenching despair. I could feel the interweaving strands of emotion like filaments of rot, tightening around me, meshing in my lungs, my veins, my bones. How could Sylvia possibly not feel this?

Featured - My Review of "The Royal Roommate" by P.G. Van

My reviewI’ve been wanting to read one of P.G. Van’s books for a long time. When I saw she’d written a sort of royal romance (I write them myself), I knew this was the perfect chance to get a taste of her writing. And I’m glad I gave it a try because I’m hooked.

The story starts ominously, and I knew right away that something was off. That didn’t lessen the suspense, though – quite the contrary. Throughout the book, I kept guessing and wondering; sometimes I was right, sometimes I wasn’t, and that made the story all the more enjoyable. Things moved slowly at first, then picked up speed and became more and more suspenseful. Right until the end, the author kept my attention.

As for Amy and Sid, they’re an interesting couple. Well matched and with a million sparks flying. I enjoyed the sexual tension between them and how their interaction in and out of bed changed slowly over the course of their relationship. Sid is irresistible, I want him for myself. And Amy has a lot of spunk and a fierce determination that match his own. I can’t say more without spoilers, but I really think they’re made for each other and for the role they’re supposed to play. I just wish there’d been more conflict between the two protagonists, more of a personal fight alongside the external action.

If you enjoy romantic suspense novels on the steamy side with a fast-paced plot and a taste of royalty, then you should give this book a try.

The moment she laid eyes on him, she knew he was bad news.
The attraction was undeniable and they both wondered how long they could hold on to their resolve. Sid didn’t want to sleep with a suspect even if she was wildly beautiful and sexy. Amy wasn’t interested in a fling.

Release Date: 9 February 2017
Publisher: Crooked Cat Books

Two stories, two heartbreaks: one past, one present…

Leaving her native France and arriving in North Wales as a postgraduate student of History and Folklore, Mel is cautiously optimistic that she can escape from her troubled past and begin a new and happier life.

She settles into her student accommodation and begins work on her thesis, concentrating particularly on one fascinating manuscript: a compelling and tragic tale of a cursed medieval princess.

Then she meets Ray – charming, down-to-earth and devastatingly handsome. Within days, Mel’s entire world has transformed from lonely and frustrated to loving and fulfilled. Despite her failure with previous relationships, she allows herself to hope that this time, at last, she can make it work.

But Mel’s dreams of happiness are under constant threat. She is hiding a dark and terrible secret, which Ray – or indeed anybody else – must never ever discover…

EXTRACT

From Chapter 3
[SUNDAY]

“Here you are!” Ray had appeared at her side, clutching two large white bread rolls, each wrapped round with a paper serviette. “Hang on to these for a moment, would you? I need to go back for the coffees.”
Mel laid aside the binoculars before lifting up the top of one of the bread rolls and peering cautiously inside. The bread itself was feather-light, and the filling consisted of two steaming slices of dark-pink meat, each edged with a strip of crisp golden-brown fat. Her mouth watered at the bewitching aroma, but she forced herself to wait until Ray had rejoined her and placed two paper cups on the table in front of them.
“So, this is a bacon bap?” she asked, as she handed one back to him.
“It is indeed!” He pulled the paper serviette aside and took a large bite from the roll, chewed for a moment, then closed his eyes as if in rapture. On opening them again, he noticed that her roll still remained untouched.
“Come on,” he urged, “don’t let it go cold!”
Mel picked up her roll and took a cautious nibble. The flavour was quite unlike anything she had ever experienced; smoky, savoury, salty and sweet, all at the same time.
“Mmm, this is divine!” she murmured. “I can’t believe I’ve lived for so long without tasting this.”
Ray grinned. “And you come from France – the spiritual home of good food?”
Mel nodded as she prepared to take another bite. “I’d always thought it was. But I suppose this must prove that there’s still room to learn more!”
They finished their rolls in companionable silence. As they sipped their coffee, Mel took up the binoculars and focussed on the tops of the pine trees.
“What are you looking at?” Ray asked.
“Those birds up there. What are they?”
Ray picked up his own binoculars and followed her gaze. “Oh, they’re crossbills. They feed on the seeds from the pine-cones. Can you see the shape of their beaks?”
“Cross-bills? Oh, yes, I see now. In France, we call them becs-croisés. I didn’t realise you had them round here. That’s probably why I didn’t recognise them.” She sighed.
“What’s the matter?”
Mel forced a smile. “The last time I saw any of them was in the pine forests in the Vendée. They reminded me a little of home.”
Feeling a tear pricking the corner of her eye, she quickly turned her head away and focussed even more intently on the birds. Why did such a seemingly trivial thing as the sight of a flock of crossbills make her so upset? But she would not cry – not here, not anywhere. She would enjoy the day. Whatever else might be troubling her, she would enjoy the day.
In fact, she had another six days before she needed to trouble herself about anything at all.
Yes, she told herself firmly. She would enjoy the day.

Sue was born in North Wales but has spent most of her life in and around Manchester.  She speaks French like a Belgian, German like a schoolgirl, and Italian and Portuguese like an Englishwoman abroad.
Her mind is so warped that she has appeared on BBC TV’s Only Connect quiz show, and she has also compiled questions for BBC Radio 4’s fiendishly difficult Round Britain Quiz.  This once caused one of her sons to describe her as “professionally weird”.  The label has stuck.

Featured - Character Interview with Jack from "Directions of the Heart" by Marie Lavender

Marie Lavender's latest book "Directions of the Heart" features several stories, so that gave us the idea to interview all the main characters. You can read my Q&A with JennaReeceVictoriaRickSadieMatt and Caitlyn if you click on their names. Now let's bug Jack with some questions!
Picture Character Interview Devika: Welcome, Jack. I’m so excited to have you over. Please have a seat.

Jack:  I appreciate the invitation!  I’m used to being in the spotlight with the press, because of my position with the Florence Police Department, but I’ve never been asked for a one-on-one interview.

Devika: Jack, I’m curious to find out more about you. What do you do for a living?

Jack:  Well, like I said, I work with the police. I’m a consultant with the FPD. Sometimes I get called to other counties for emergencies. I take on special cases, such as kidnappings and assaults, and assist the victims during rescues, and later on, as they try to make lives for themselves. PTSD isn’t just something that happens to soldiers.

Devika: Interesting. What about your family background?

Jack:  Ah, I am from Portland. I came from a well-off background, you could say, but I distanced myself from my parents after the nightmare that happened when I was a kid.

Devika: I see. So how did you meet Caitlyn?

Jack:  (Frowns.) Unfortunately, we met because Caitlyn was a victim. We found her in a cellar after her kidnappers got killed in a shootout. I’ve done my best to help her cope with everything.

Devika: Wow. That sure makes for an interesting story. How did you know she’s the one?

Jack:  (His face lights up.) She’s amazing. The woman is brave, despite what she went through. She’s sweet and I love her laugh. She is also the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen (the audience can see a rare blush on his cheekbones). Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s a good idea for us to get involved, but it’s clear we’re both interested.

Devika: Would you say there was a decisive moment in your life that made you who you are today?

Jack:  (A muscles twitches in his jaw.) Yeah, being locked in a closet when you’re ten years old, having to beg for food and water, will change your life. I guess it made me who I am today; it gave me the courage to help others in the same situation.

Devika: Let’s talk about your dreams and goals in life.

Jack:  I just want to help people. But, if you mean on a personal level, yeah, I know I’d like to work through my issues well enough so that I can have a full life. Be happy. Maybe get married and have kids at some point.

Devika: Okay. And what is your greatest fear?

Jack:  (Rubs his chin.) My greatest fear is losing Caitlyn in any way. That’s why I’m so hesitant to get involved with her, and possibly mess things up.

Devika: Tell me, if you could have anything in the world, what would you wish for?

Jack:  I just want Caitlyn in my life. If that’s only as friends, I’ll deal with it. It might be hell on my libido, but I’ll manage.

Devika: I’d love to talk some more, but unfortunately our time is up. Thanks so much for stopping by. I can’t wait to see what adventures you’ll have in store for us in the future. *waves*

PictureAbout the BookGenre: Women’s Fiction

A bittersweet story of love, loss and life. Perfect for fans of Patricia Scanlan, Adele Parks and Rosamunde Pilcher.
The beautiful old Bath House in Ballytokeep has lain empty and abandoned for decades. For devoted pensioners Archie and Iris, it holds too many conflicting memories of their adolescent dalliances and tragic consequences – sometimes it’s better to leave the past where it belongs.

Inspired, she moves to Ballytokeep leaving her past heartache 600 miles away – but can you ever escape your past or your destiny?

Extract from Secrets We Keep by Faith Hogan

‘I’ve never seen anything like it,’ Kate said. It was her first thought as they turned down the cove and saw the bathhouse snuggled into the cliff face. It was a turreted, stocky grown-ups sandcastle. ‘It could have been emptied from a child’s bucket,’ was her first reaction. It had been painted, white with a light blue trim once, then the waves and the spray had all but washed that away. It still sat proudly, if shabbily, on a huge flat rock, that upturned in a lip over the sea. It was a plate, large enough for any giant.

‘Genesis Rock – it’s a metamorphic rock, probably over a thousand million years old,’ Rita said. ‘Sorry, did I mention I taught geography and home economics, once upon a time.’

‘No, but I probably should have guessed.’

‘I don’t remember the bathhouse even being open. I could imagine that I’d have spent all my days here if I had.’ Rita looked at the washed white walls that reached high into the cliff face.

‘Well, Archie said they ran it for a few years, but he didn’t say when it shut.’ This place probably held sadness for Archie, if his brother died here. Kate couldn’t feel it. Instead, it made her feel energized, as though the sea was spraying something like an invitation deep into her lungs. It made her heart pound with an expectation she hadn’t felt in years. Even the deserted castle keep that loomed up in grey stone at the tip of the headland seemed to carry a hopeful secret in its towers.

‘It must have been lovely once. Even now, you can see.’ Rita rested her hands on the thick window ledge, her nose pressed firmly to the cold glass of the windows. ‘It looks like they just closed up one evening and never came back.’

Kate walked to the back of the bathhouse; it dug into the cliff face, as though the construction of one depended on the other. Alongside the building, a small narrow road clung to the cliff for a couple of hundred yards before it feathered off onto what counted as a main road in these parts. Far below, the waves lapped serenely against the stone. It was low tide now; Kate wondered how close the water actually came to the rock. ‘I’d love to get a look inside.’ Rita followed her round to the front of the bathhouse. They peered through a sea sprayed window for a few minutes. Inside, Kate could see there were tables and chairs, a small stove and an old-fashioned counter where once someone had taken orders for afternoon tea. ‘It’s a little café, wouldn’t it be lovely if it was open for coffee?’ Kate mused, it was so much more than just a bathhouse.

Caitlyn:  (Smiles for the first time since she walked in.) Jack…Jack is the light that pulled me out of the darkness. He’s a consultant with the police in Florence, and he is the one who found me in that cellar.

Devika: Wow. That sure makes for an interesting story. How did you know he’s the one?

Caitlyn:  (Clears her throat.) I have the worst schoolgirl crush on him. He’s definitely hot, and he is probably the most generous man I’ve ever met. Plus, he has his own dark past, so I know we’ve connected. The trouble is…I think I’m going to have to make the first move. He’s too noble.

Devika: Would you say there was a decisive moment in your life that made you who you are today?

Caitlyn:  (A flash of fear crosses her face.) I guess you could say that horrible experience I endured defined me. But I’m working on coping through the flashbacks, and trying to make a new life for myself.

Devika: Let’s talk about your dreams and goals in life.

Caitlyn:  I really want to be a reporter again. I remember how much I loved writing. I think I’m up to the task, at least if I ease back into it. Beyond that? I just want to be happy, and maybe someday, once I get over these shadows in my mind, I can try to let someone in. Maybe then I get married and everything.

Devika: Okay. And what is your greatest fear?

Caitlyn:  (Shudders.) My greatest fear is probably being in that cellar. I’m not sure I could go through something like that again.

Devika: Tell me, if you could have anything in the world, what would you wish for?

Caitlyn:  I guess it is a little farfetched, but if Jack would even consider having me as his, I think I’d be the luckiest girl in the world.

Devika: I’d love to talk some more, but unfortunately our time is up. Thanks so much for stopping by. I can’t wait to see what adventures you’ll have in store for us in the future. *waves*

Featured - Book Club Spotlight for "Snowbound" by Olivier Lafonte

Print Length: 339 pagesPublication Date: May 18, 2017Sold by: Amazon Digital Services LLCLanguage: EnglishGenre: Young Adult Adventure/Fantasy

Christmas is dying.

The last Santa Claus had triplets who each inherited a portion of his father’s power, and that split is now tearing apart the soul of Christmas.

Niccolo Vecchio, the eldest, has fortified the North Pole into a citadel of ice and metal.

Santini, the middle brother, is in hiding somewhere in the Mediterranean.

The youngest brother, Niccolo Piccolo, is raising legions to reclaim his inheritance.

Two of the triplets will have to renounce their claim in the next forty-eight hours, or this Christmas will be the last one ever.

And it’s up to Adam, underachieving teenager sub-ordinaire, and his brand new jock bully Zach to make that happen…

It would be great if you can add this book to your TBR

Character Interview with Matt from "Directions of the Heart" by Marie Lavender

Marie Lavender's latest book "Directions of the Heart" features several stories, so that gave us the idea to interview all the main characters. You can read my Q&A with JennaReeceVictoriaRick and Sadie if you click on their names. Now let's bug Matt with some questions!

Picture Character Interview Devika: Welcome, Matthew. I’m so excited to have you over. Please have a seat.

Matt:  Thanks for having me here!

Devika: Matt, I’m curious to find out more about you. What do you do for a living?

Matt:  Good question. For many years, I worked as a salesman at various organizations. Now? You could say I’ve turned over a new leaf. I’m working as a hand at the Williams Ranch.

Devika: Interesting. What about your family background?

Matt:  Not much of one, I’m afraid to say. My parents were drug addicts who abandoned me to the system back in New York. And my foster father wasn’t worth the check he got paid for keeping me every month. But I guess I’d like to make a family of my own someday. I sure as hell won’t be like the type of parents I’ve been around.

Devika: I see. So how did you meet Sadie?

Matt:  (Grins.) I met her while on an assignment. I was supposed to convince her to sell, but her reaction was quite a surprise.

Devika: Wow. That sure makes for an interesting story. How did you know she’s the one?

Matt:  For one, she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I can’t stop thinking about her. Did I mention she can run that ranch blindfolded? Plus, she curses like a trucker and cooks like a dream. She’s amazing! I just wish she had a clue about how I felt.

Devika: Would you say there was a decisive moment in your life that made you who you are today?

Matt:  Yeah, it was probably one of those times after my foster father beat the crap out of me. I decided I was getting out of there as soon as I hit eighteen, and I’d never look back. I’ve kept that promise, taken care of myself, done what was necessary to make ends meet. I’m still working at being the kind of person that someone like Sadie would deserve, though.

Devika: Let’s talk about your dreams and goals in life.

Matt:  Now that I’m living in a town where I can see myself settling down, I’ve been thinking a lot about my future. I sure wouldn’t mind the whole wife and kids thing.

Devika: Okay. And what is your greatest fear?

Matt:  My greatest fear is not getting Sadie to see exactly how I feel, that she’s become my universe.

Devika: Tell me, if you could have anything in the world, what would you wish for?

Matt:  Plain and simple, I want Sadie Williams more than anything else I’ve ever thought about.

Devika: I’d love to talk some more, but unfortunately our time is up. Thanks so much for stopping by. I can’t wait to see what adventures you’ll have in store for us in the future. *waves*
