BABY BOOMERS (1946-1964)

EXCERPT FROM THE ORIGINAL BOOK

Boomers tend towards being workaholics. Hard work and sacrifice were the prices to pay to be successful, and they wanted to make a difference. The way to have job security was to work harder than the person next to them. They enjoy teamwork and collaboration along with group decision-making. They do not appreciate constant feedback or micro-management.”

Zoomers prefer face-to-face communication more than you might think

Zoomers would prefer communicating with co-workers and managers in person rather than by email or phone. This in-person meeting may be via a digital platform such as Zoom or FaceTime. They will embrace the technology of Web 3.0, where virtual reality puts you in the same “room” with them. It would be well worth the effort to learn about Web 3.0.

“Millennials and Boomers want to be able to use any technology tool to enable every aspect of their lives, from work to personal, scheduling, and planning social events. “This is a good place where a cross-mentoring relationship would be beneficial. The complexity and variety of communication means are mind-boggling. Previous generations could learn much from Zoomers, as they can be quite agile and knowledgeable in this area.

Embracing the Zoomer

Respect given breeds respect received! We are often taken aback by the display of individuality in the Zoomer culture. Yet, to respond in a manner of kindness, respect, and intentionality speaks volumes about communicating your authenticity. Likewise, modeling value for one another and embracing each other’s differences truly helps to generate a foundation of trust and respect.

Too often, we see the expectation of the Zoomer, who is younger, to give respect first before they receive it. What we are suggesting is that the “you first” principle be in place. If we have a Zoomer reading this book, “you first” too!

Consider the thoughts and interests of a Zoomer individual in your life. How could you intentionally bridge the generational gap? Bridging the gap with expressions of thoughtfulness, respect, and love will consistently communicate across all generational gaps. Not to mention, it will do so in ways that will bring unity, growth, and authenticity. And when we speak of love, we are not speaking about the loving relationship that a parent-child or marriage contains; we are speaking about the love and appreciation of another fellow human being.

Mentorship is Key to Reaching out to the Zoomers

Encourage face-to-face conversation: it sounds simple, but in this very technical environment, many Zoomers find that it is not always a viable option. Thus, the company must create these opportunities, encourage them, and applaud them when they occur. This is as foreign to former generations as being called on the carpet in past work environments. This type of conversation was regarded as a waste of time. The “Zoomers Project” is designed to enhance these conversations. Whether it is mentoring a Zoomer or a Zoomer mentoring another generation, these skills can be a game changer for your culture.

Establish Mentor Relationships: A basic human truth we would probably all agree on is that people do business with people they know, like, and trust. And that starts with building relationships in the workplace. Having a program in place that encourages regular relationship building between team members will establish trust and, as an added benefit, grow the soft skills of younger employees in the process, especially if mentors focus, specifically on them.

Are you tired of the typical networking groups?

Are you tired of the typical networking groups where you are stuck being next to two people at a table you have nothing in common?

Do you lack making real connections with people because you have 30 seconds to introduce yourself?

Are you new to networking and the small business world where you are unsure how it works?

Do you understand what people do for business and how to connect them to your network?

Is there a sea of people in a room with random connections, too much socializing, and not enough business networking efforts?

Peak Networking Group™ (PNG) was created to address these challenges. As a small business owner, you only have so much time for business development and networking efforts.

The meetings have boundaries around time, yet room to explain what you do and give a client example. This helps people around the table understand at a prospect/client level. There is also time for a brief question or two.

The founder, Mary Erlain also helps foster the connections and finds ways to create value for membership.

Members and guests are treated equally. No one gets extra time at the table.

She also brings the groups together in person and on Zoom simultaneously.

If you have an interest in experiencing what PNG can do for your business, contact Mary at m.erlain@peak-ds.com to be her guest!

Actions and words matter equally to a Zoomer.

This is a generation that values actions and words in nearly equal measure. A recent study by IBM finds that Zoomers, by an overwhelming margin, believe brands need to back up their words with actions that demonstrate continuity, credibility, and integrity—or they risk losing their “realness” and authenticity. Zoomers using social media as their communication platform can spread the word like a tidal wave. The term “going viral” started with the younger Millennials and is now coined by Zoomers.

In a world that is driven by Yelp, Google, Amazon, and independent reviews, we have changed how we do business with companies. Glassdoor is one site that provides space for former employees to rate and write reviews about their employers. All generations have embraced this idea of ratings and reviews. Zoomers invest heavily in these websites when making buying and career choices. This is one example of how generations have crossed over and adopted a Zoomer practice. The idea of reviews has changed the face of many industries, such as real estate, professional services, healthcare, consumer goods, e-commerce, etc.

Companies must live up to their 5-Star ratings internally in how they treat employees as well as externally in servicing customers. Social media can and will drive the ratings message. It is the new “word of mouth” way of driving business away from or towards a company, product, or service. As a reminder, when hiring anyone in your company, they are also “hiring” or “buying” you. It is a two-way street. Wise candidates have done their research on your company beyond your website and are in the decision-making process when they arrive onscreen or in the office.

The Zoomer Book – The Space Between

Society tends to either romanticize youth or criticize the things they are doing differently. The reality of Zoomers, however, lies somewhere in between. They face many of the challenges that everyone faces in that life stage—transitioning from school to work, separating from parents, and forming their own identities. But they are doing so in an ultra-connected, fast-moving technological age that has seen some of the most horrific global events of all time.

We must recognize Zoomers’ differences and meet them where they are, rather than where we want them to be. Without empathy and understanding, brands risk being filtered into obscurity. As writer Logan Pearsall Smith put it nearly one hundred years ago: “Don’t laugh at a youth for his affectations; he is only trying on one face after another to find a face of his own.”

The benefits of becoming a member of Peak Networking Group™ (PNG) are many.

Over 18+ years, Mary Erlain, founder of PNG, has developed business relationships. And she rarely forgets people. She has a photographic memory that she uses to link people in business. She lives up to her tagline “Connecting the dots and removing barriers!”

The dots in the PNG logo represent the members. It also represents the 8 separate groups of PNG. They are joined by Mary who introduces members to each other.

There is a Reunion every year where she invites 18 years’ worth of guests and members to network together.

She has random pop-up PNGs where she joins a group of people together where she feels there could be mutual benefit.

She is starting the After Hours Club where members can come together to discuss an article or book summary.

If you have an interest in experiencing what PNG can do for your business, contact Mary at m.erlain@peak-ds.com to be her guest!
