Go Despite all that her father had done, all he had killed, she has to go to save him before he actually dies. She has to leave her home, Earth, to go to the home of her kind, Mahgiria. But she knows there will be great risks. Being the result of an illegal act, her stepping foot in the Mahgic Realm alone will automatically put her, and her brother Ayden, at risk of being captured and confi ned for life. She knows the sacrifi ces. To leave her family, her friends, and her one and only true love, Payge, possibly giving up her life for a man who may not deserve it. As Jade goes on her journey, making and breaking promises, she fi nds herself having more questions than answers. Not to mention a power crazed uncle who's hell bent on taking everything she loves away from her, including Earth. Determined to do things on her own, Jade eventually realizes that she is going to need help from others now more than ever. But will it be enough?

Jade has spent most of her life thinking that her father was dead. She finds out he was not, that he is in prison in the world that he comes from. He is Mahgic making Jade half mahgic which is against the law. She decides to go back to the world to save her father. She could be leaving everything behind and endangering everything she loves. Will she find it worth the risk to save her father?

In an Oyster Shell –  An interesting read that could use some work.

The Pearls –  The beginning of this book was very interesting. It was a very nice hook that made you curious to continue on with the story.

The world building was fantastic. It was very imaginative in concept, and well executed.

The romance of this story was sweet and intriguing.

The Sand – I feel like this author was missing some of the complexities of the interpersonal relationships between characters.

Goodreads

Welcome to Torte-a small-town family bakeshop where the treats are killer good.

It's the dead of winter in the sleepy town of Ashland, which means no tourists-and fewer customers-for Jules Capshaw and her bakery. But when she's asked to cater an off-season retreat for the directors of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, business starts heating up...until Jules finds a dead body in the freezer.

"An intriguing new series."-Reader to Reader

Someone at the retreat has apparently iced the bartender, a well-known flirt with a legendary temper-that is, before a killer beat him to the punch. Then, from out of nowhere, Jules's own ex-husband shows up at the shop-and soon becomes a suspect. With accusations piling up higher than the snow-and thicker than a chocolate mousse cake-Jules has to think outside the (recipe) box to find the real culprit...and make sure he gets his just desserts.

"A delectable tale of murder and intrigue."-Portland Book Review on Meet Your Baker

Jules is back settling into the winter season at Ashland Oregon. She is asked by the Shakespeare theatre director to cater a retreat for the weekend up in the woods. With the tourist rush over she can use the extra cash flow so she readily agrees. What she doesn’t see coming is the dead body that she finds in the freezer. To make things worse her estranged husband shows up to win her back while her old high school flame is there to investigate the murder. Will they find the killer? Will Jules figure out who her heart belongs to?

In an Oyster Shell – Another great installment of the Bakeshop series, that is more intriguing than the last books because the love triangle becomes more prominent.

The Pearls – I think I say this in every review of this series – I love the setting of Ashland Oregon. Though this book it’s a little out of town in a little fishing resort. It’s set in the winter and is just a cozy read. Would be even more cozy for the winter, but I didn’t get around to reading it until now.

For the first three books, Carlos the husband was estranged off being a chef on a cruise ship somewhere. Jules has returned to her hometown where she is back in contact with her old high school sweetheart Thomas. In this book, it becomes a full-blown love triangle. I was adamantly on team Thomas. After this book, I am more open to Carlos. So now it’s anybody’s game. I am not a huge fan of triangles but this one has just become plain fun. Even the characters in the book are enjoying it. I find it very clever that the author is teasing the readers through some of the characters comments. Not surprising coming from Ellie Alexandar, she likes to tease.

I really enjoy this series because each book has an outstanding plot, yet there is a weaving of a greater plot that makes you want to keep up with the whole series. This book really impressed me, and I think is the best one yet. The next one is being released in a couple of weeks, so we will see. I bet the just keep getting better and better!

The Sand – This book was fantastic!

Book Blitz – This Is What Goodbye Looks Like by Olivia Rivers

This is What Goodbye Looks Like

Olivia Rivers

Publication date: June 17th 2016

Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Lea Holder watched a boy die in the same DUI accident that ruined Lea’s legs and threw her little sister into a coma. As the only eye-witness to the accident, if she tells the truth in court, the drunk driver will go to prison and the dead boy’s family will have justice.

But Lea lies.

If she had told the truth, Lea would have put her own mom in prison for causing the accident. With the trial over and her mom set free, Lea attempts to rebuild her shattered life as she waits for her little sister to wake from her coma.

When Lea transfers schools, she finds herself in the same senior class as Seth Ashbury, the brother of the boy her mom killed. As Lea gets to know the person buried underneath Seth’s grief, she quickly falls for his quick wit and passionate soul. But Seth remains completely oblivious that Lea is the same girl who robbed his family of justice.

As their relationship deepens, Lea finally gets a taste of the love that’s been missing from her life since the accident. But soon she’s faced with a choice: she can continue her lies and accept the comfort it gives them both. Or she can tell Seth the truth about everything, and risk destroying both her family and her newfound love.

EXCERPT:

Every reasonable thought in my head disappears at the sound of his voice. It’s slightly different now—deep and strong, instead of choked with grief and dread. But the smooth tone is mostly the same as I remember it, and my gut twists painfully as a new set of footsteps approaches.

A sharp noise breaks through the sudden quiet, and I flinch, thinking for a split second that it’s the sound of tearing metal. But then I realize it’s the bark of a dog, and I squeeze my eyes shut.

I can’t do this. I have to do this, but I can’t do this.

“Seth!” Brie calls out. “Dude, you’re totally late. Again.”

He makes a low, disbelieving noise, something between a scoff and a chuckle. Now he sounds even closer. I take a deep breath and clench my hand tighter around my cane. If I don’t turn around and greet him, it’ll be obvious that I have an issue with him, but I can’t get my body to move.

“I’m fashionably late,” Seth tells Brie. “There’s a difference.”

“Yeah, there is,” Hannah says. “One is on time, and one isn’t. And only one is annoying, too.”

“Agreed,” he says. “You punctual people get so irritating.”

Hannah tosses a curse at him, but laughs to soften the impact. Then the footsteps stop, and something cold and wet nudges my wrist, right where my mitten ends. At first, I think someone’s pressing snow there, but then I feel a warm tongue lick the same spot.

I jerk back just as I hear Seth say, “Koda! You know I can hear that, you bad girl. No licking.” Then he says to the others, “Who’s she licking? She never does that to you guys.”

“That’s Lea,” Brie says. “She’s the new senior we got. Lea, this is Seth Ashbury. Seth, this is Lea Holder.”

My heart pounds a million beats per minute, and the adrenaline makes me strong enough to peel my eyes open. Looking down, I find myself staring right at Seth’s seeing eye dog. She looks just like she did at the trial, a regal German Shepherd mix with a glossy coat and wagging tail.

The dog nudges at me again with her nose, clearly expecting me to pet her. But instead I focus on the light-weight vest strapped to her back, letting my eyes follow the slim handle attached to it until I find myself staring at the guy gripping it.

Seth Ashbury stands right there, right in front of me. He also looks the same as he did during the trial—tall with lithe muscle, shaggy blond hair, and tan skin. He’s the spitting image of his older brother, right down to the sharp jawline and the way one side of his mouth lifts slightly higher than the other as he smiles.

A slim pair of sunglasses hides his blind eyes, but I’m betting they’re the same color as his brother’s. Parker’s eyes were shockingly blue, like a tropical sea, and their bright color contrasted sickeningly against the blood that dripped down his forehead after the accident.

I’m frozen. Maddie and Hannah giggle, probably thinking I’ve been stunned by Seth’s good looks. I’m sure any normal girl would consider him gorgeous, but I haven’t been normal in months, and nothing about Seth is beautiful to me. He’s just a reminder of crunching metal and squealing tires and my sister’s scream, her scream that seemed to echo and never, never, never end…

“Hey,” Seth says, holding out a hand in my general direction. “Nice to meet you.”

This is the part where I need to slap on a smile, recover from my brief awkwardness, and let myself go into robot mode. Shut down my emotions, boot up automatic functions. I reach my hand forward a little, and for a single moment, I think I’m going to pull this off.

But then I notice the slim chain around his neck, the one that has a small, silver medallion dangling from the end. The same medallion his brother was wearing when he died just feet away from me.

My gut twists, and my hand falls away, and I vomit all over his shoes.

Help yourself to a generous slice of Victoria sponge, a perfect cup of tea and a big dollop of romance. Welcome to the Little Village Bakery.

Meet Millie. Heartbreak has forced her to make a new start and when she arrives at the old bakery in the little village of Honeybourne she is determined that this will be her home sweet home. Her imagination has been captured by the tumbledown bakery but with no running water and dust everywhere, her cosy idea of making cakes in a rural idyll quickly crumbles.

Luckily the locals are a friendly bunch and step in to help Millie. One in particular, Dylan, a laid-back lothario, soon captures her attention.

But just as Millie is beginning to settle in, an unexpected visitor from her past suddenly turns up determined to ruin everything for her. It’s time for Millie to face the skeletons in her closet if she’s going to live the dream of running her little village bakery, and her blossoming romance with Dylan.

A charming heartwarming novel about love, life and new beginnings perfect for fans of Milly Johnson and Debbie Johnson.

Millie moves to Honeybourne with the hopes of new beginnings. She buys the town’s old bakery without ever having seen it. When she gets there she sees the repairs are more than her bank book can handle. Her neighbors get to know her and decide to rally around her to help get the bakery up and running.  Everything is going well until a woman from Millie’s past comes to town with the sole intention of ruining her. Will the town accept Millie despite her past?

In an Oyster Shell – This was a quaint story that lacked steady action but would make for an easy read.

The Pearls –  I am starting to love a good British novel. They are just so fun and full of humor. I enjoy learning new words and phrases. I loved the English setting that went  along with this novel.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the story. You could see it from the title to the cover to the end of the story.

This book had some fun subplots that made gave the book some depth. This was complimented by a great array of characters.

The Sand – My kindle read 50% into the novel before I really got hooked into it. It took a long time for the conflict to rise to a noticeable level of interest.

Alison Quinn, Countess of Waxwold, is content with her bookish life—until she’s summoned to be a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Tremontane’s mother for six months. Even the prospect of access to the Royal Library doesn’t seem enough to make up for her sacrifice, but Alison is prepared to do her service to the Crown. What she’s not prepared for is Prince Anthony North, Queen Zara’s playboy brother, who’s accustomed to getting what he wants—including the Countess of Waxwold.

When the fallout from an unfortunate public encounter throws the two of them together, Alison has no interest in becoming the Prince’s next conquest. But as the weeks pass, Alison discovers there’s more to Anthony than she—or he—realized, and their dislike becomes friendship, and then something more—until disaster drives Alison away, swearing never to return.

Then Alison is summoned by the Queen again, this time to serve as Royal Librarian. A threat to Tremontane’s government, with her treasured Library at stake, draws Alison into the conflict…and into contact with Anthony once more. Can they work together to save the Royal Library and Tremontane? And can she open her heart to love again?

Allison Quinn, Countess of Waxwold is summoned from her quiet book publishing life to attend the Queen’s mother as a lady in waiting. She begrudgingly goes to fill her duty. Her first night out she’s caught in a dramatic public embarrassment with the crown prince. To soothe public impropriety the queen mandates that Allison and the Prince go out on a public weekly outing. A great friendship grows along with Allison’s affection for the library. After a hurtful interaction with the prince, Allison returns home.  They find out it is being poorly mismanaged and Allison is summoned back. This becomes the catalyst, bringing the kingdom to the brink of political upheaval. Will Allison be able to protect that what she loves and find out who she can really trust?

The Pearls –  What drew me to this book was the cover. Then I read the summary and I love fantasies that have to do with royalty. This book fulfilled all the greatest hopes I could have in such a fantasy. I am a huge fan of the Selection series and if you like those you will like this book too.

The tone of the book was regal and rugged. It had some steampunk elements to it, which I found pleasant. Though this was a civilized society, the political system was a thin shroud to some barbaric and antiquated traditions. It had an amazing political sub-plot that I am not usually interested in.

The book had great congruency, yet there did seem to be a couple of different periods of time within the book. Withing these periods of time, the plotline was plentiful and diverse so the reader never loses interest.

It was a truly great read. I highly recommend it.

She wrote reviews and critical essays for many years before turning to fiction, and was surprised at how much she liked it. She loves the fantasy genre and how it stretches the imagination.

Five simple words: That's all it takes to change the course of 18-year-old Josie Graham's life in the summer of 1989.

Josie is a musical prodigy: She can sing, play guitar and is a natural on the piano. Instead of spending her last summer before college traveling the country with her rock star father, she's made a last minute decision to spend it working at her Aunt Bernie's inn, in Ambler's Fork, North Carolina. But what could have turned her life-long passion for music into a hatred for an industry she's worked so hard to get into?

Her aunt's inn seems like the perfect place to escape, to clear her head and figure things out, but on her first day there, she almost drowns before Chic Hobbs saves her.

Chic wants nothing more in life than to leave Ambler's Fork and his sordid past behind—at least not until that day Josie Graham swims into his life. The problem is, Chic's got a secret. It's a secret he's keeping from Josie, and he's worried if it gets out, it'll ruin everything, and she'll judge him for his past mistakes the way everyone else in town has.

Josie is carrying a burden of her own. One that made her run to Ambler's Fork - away from her family and everything she's ever known.

Chic saved Josie once. Can he save her again? Or will Josie rescue him this time?

Josie is on her way to Nashville to spend the summer with her father. Torn about wanting to go she decides to take the exit to her Aunt’s Inn and spend the summer there. It starts out with what would have been a tragedy if it wasn’t for Chic who saves her. They get to know each other through the summer and learn to take a harder look at themselves and what they really want for their future.

In An Oyster Shell –  This was a heartwarming read that is a must-read for summer.

The Pearls – From the beginning of the book it has a very nice tone to it. From the character voice to the setting depicted by great descriptions it was a book you could comfortably get lost in. The title of the book was appropriate and set a great precedent for the book.

This book had fantastic characters. Each character had their respective qualities and flaws. There were quite a few characters and each one had their role to play. It takes a lot of talent to write that many characters and still have the story flow smoothly.

The romance in this book was sweet and realistic. I like how each love interest was aware of their own flaws but brought out the best in each other. I like that the couple endured different obstacles from their respective lives and they made it work anyways.

The Sand – There was some rough language in it that wasn’t really consistent with the tone of the book.

I had a really hard time deciding what to rate this book. I wanted to rate it lower because the rough language really stuck out like a sore thumb. Yet, I can’t bring myself to giving this book a lower score because in the end 5 pearls are books that I would consider timeless. This book will withstand the test of time, I will give this book away, it is one of the few books I would consider reading again. Years from now I will remember this book, I can overlook it’s one flaw.

Friday Coffee & Bookish Speaks – Rainy Day Reading

friday-coffee-bookish-speaks

I was woken up this morning with a fresh-brewed coffee topped with cream from the coffee shop by my hubby. Best way to wake up is to a large coffee and a beautiful husband!

What are you drinking today?

We had a few hot days this week in the North West. I hate hot weather. I grew up in Alaska and 70 will always be my perfect “hot” temperature. Anything above that is hell. Here we get a few hot days and over the last couple of years we have gotten more than normal, I just can hardly function. So we got a reprieve the last couple days in weather, even getting rain yesterday. It was perfect.

There is something comforting and calming to me about a grey rainy day, especially after a few scorchers. Yesterday was such a day it was grey and drizzly. I had the windows open and the air smelled clean and I decided that the only thing better would to get in some cozy clothes and read a book. Yesterday, that’s all I wanted to do is read while listening to the rain fall.

I thank I might be having a lifelong love affair with reading. Reading on rainy days just feels romantic.

How do you feel about reading on rainy days?

Why run from your troubles when you can fly instead?

When Caity Shaw is fired from her first job that doesn’t require an elf uniform, her older sister, Rachel, an event planner, hires her to work a meeting in Dublin. Caity jumps at the opportunity to travel abroad and escape her pathetic life. However, even four thousand miles from home, there’s no avoiding debt collectors, an overbearing mother, and haunting memories of a controlling ex.

While in Dublin, Caity suffers a series of humiliating mishaps, causing her to lose even more faith in herself. Caity struggles to earn Rachel’s respect—and to keep Declan, her hot Irish coworker, at arm’s length. Declan repeatedly saves Caity’s butt and helps boost her self-confidence, making it difficult to keep her distance from the charming womanizer. When Declan helps her research her Irish grandmother, Caity discovers the mysterious past of the courageous woman she barely knew might hold the answers to her future.

Caity Shaw is in need of a job. Her sister provides her with a temporary job at a meeting for a big corporation in Ireland. Running from her abusive ex in the states, Caity’s life is in shambles. While she works this job she is trying to make amends with her sister and hope for a chance at more permanency in her life. She makes mistakes and friends along the way and learns a lot about life.

In an Oyster Shell – In my opinion, it was an incomplete narrative that I would not recommend.

The Pearls – The irony of the title was cute. The concept of the book was quaint. The setting was fun. There were some funny moments in the book.

The Sand – This book felt incomplete to me. There was not a strong plot line. Everything felt just touched on and not developed. The characters were weak. I feel like the author could have done more with the setting. This book had a lot of potential but in the end, I felt it wasn’t realized.

In an Oyster Shell – It was an adorable read that I enjoyed very much and recommend to anyone who likes a good clean romance.

The Pearls –  This series is very interesting because the books don’t really have an order. They are all stand-alone. They all are under the same premise a cabin of girls at summer camp make a pact that they will all marry billionaires or they have to sing the camp song at their wedding.

This book introduces some characters that you will see in other books. The development was great. The characters were distinguished and easy to love or despise respectively. Tucker was gruff at first but grew to be a lovable character. Marilyn was darling from the beginning. Each character had great back story, even the supporting characters.

This story was short and sweet and you get to see the characters in other books. This book is perfect for a feel-good quick read. I was sick and read the whole series in a matter of days and it was so comforting.

The Sand – It was short which worked for and against this book.
