long post: in music school i would often sit in on the floor in the Cage section of piano stacks and leaf through scores. i really never played any of his music until after i left school; at the time i didn’t feel i had the authority or the right (which is a shame—and I discourage this mentality when I talk to younger musicians), but i loved to just sit there and look at the pieces. month after month i would come back to one particular score, “electronic music for piano,” sort of in disbelief that the score was actually the score—a scrawled-out list on hotel stationary with no explanation, rare for a composer whose music is typically copied meticulously, almost overexplained, and often looks quite beautiful on the page. the words (some crossed out) aren’t instructions per se—but rather objects, ideas, names (including his own) and other prompts. for years even after music school i kept checking up on that piece, in a way to see if something “clicked” for me, and in the last year i’ve communicated at length with james pritchett about the score, trading ideas but mostly listening to his truly insightful theories about it. starting last spring i began to put serious thought toward making a realization for performance that i could actually stand behind, and though every day something changes and something else occurs to me, on wednesday i’ll finally try it out in LA at the Broad.
