Interview with M Pepper Langlinais author of Manifesting Destiny
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing M Pepper Langlinais author of Manifesting Destiny (Changers Book 1)Hi M, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I was born and raised in Texas, with a large side of Southern Louisiana, which is where most of my extended family lives. I grew up speaking both English and French Creole and eating lots of jambalaya. I eventually got a degree in screenwriting then went on to get a graduate degree in writing and publishing. I worked in publishing for a number of years before deciding to devote my time to working on my own books rather than anyone else’s.
What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I recently was a guest at the InD’Scribe conference and did my first signing, and I’d like to do more—attend conferences as a guest author/speaker and do signings. Those are my practical ambitions. In general, I’d like to have engaged readers—I enjoy hearing from them and wish I did more often.
Which writers inspire you?
Arthur Conan Doyle, certainly, given that my career first really got started with Sherlock Holmes stories. My novel The K-Pro was called “Neil Gaiman for girls” by one reader, and it’s true that I have enjoyed Gaiman’s work in the past. I think my spy novel was inspired by John Le Carré. As for Manifesting Destiny, that probably came from reading so many books aloud to my kids. In fact, a recent Amazon review stated “I would recommend it to fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson,” which is exactly the stuff I’ve been reading to my children. I certainly feel honored that someone would shelve me with such great works.
So, what have you written?
Well, way back when, my first officially published works were a short story in Future’s Mysterious Anthology Magazine and a poem in the journal Rosebud. And then for about six years I was barely writing except a blog called Letters to Rob (you can find the PDF of it on my site now; it was a series of open letters to musician Rob Thomas and got picked up by Atlantic’s music boards for a while). Once I was working in publishing full time, I didn’t have the energy to write my own stuff any more. But when I left, I found I needed that outlet again. I dipped back in by starting with some well-received fan fiction (which is how I’d originally cut my teeth as a writer, but that’s another story), and then I tried self-publishing a Sherlock Holmes story. It was the story that got me into grad school, in fact, and it did better than I expected, maybe because I had zero expectations for it. I published some more Sherlock Holmes stuff, then branched out to some other things as mentioned above: a fantasy based loosely on my own experiences working on film sets and informed by my minor in Classics and mythology (The K-Pro); a 1960s spy novel (The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller; a scripted version won a screenwriting award); an anthology of short stories (The World Ends at Five). And most recently Manifesting Destiny, as well as the short story “Aptera” which appeared on Aurora Wolf this past June. I’ve also had a 15-minute play produced and then turned into a short film known as “Adverse Possession.”
Where can we buy or see them?
You can find links to everything on my site: http://PepperWords.com.
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
My main character in Manifesting Destiny is Cee. She’s sixteen and has a crush on her best friend Marcus, but he’s gay. The story takes place in the future, and society has evolved in such a way that most—but not all—people morph at some point in their adolescence. They are able to transform into some kind of animal, but they never know which one until it happens for the first time. Cee discovers she has a snarky dragon named Livian living inside her, which is a problem because dragons are supposed to be extinct. Marcus and her other friends urge Cee to get rid of Livian, have him removed by a ruling Clan known as the Magi. The story is fundamentally about embracing your true self regardless of pressure to conform. Also, it’s about taming your inner dragon and controlling your emotions.
What are you working on at the moment?
A couple things. For one, the sequel to Manifesting Destiny, which will be titled The Great Divide. And on the lighter side, a Regency romance titled Brynnde.
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
I don’t even know! The problem with Hollywood and “the industry” is that it takes so long to get things moving, and when you’re talking about young characters, the actors and actresses age out so fast.
When did you decide to become a writer?
I grew up thinking I would either be a magazine editor or a film director. Yet I always loved to read and write, and I was always a storyteller. I’m not sure at what point it occurred to me that I could maybe write for film instead. Even when I started college, I was still thinking I’d be a magazine journalist, but things outside my control conspired to put me in the radio-television-film school instead. Still, I never thought I’d be only a writer. It’s why I got a publishing degree—I assumed I’d be working in publishing if I weren’t going to be working in Hollywood. Not until I quit all that did I say to myself, “You know, maybe I’m just a good, old-fashioned writer.”
Do you write full-time or part-time?
Ostensibly it’s my full-time job, but with three kids the truth is I’m splitting my time between work and family.
Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
During the school year it’s much easier. I take the kids to school, go for my morning walk, come back to my home office (known as Little London) and write until it’s time for the kids to get home. Of course, I also do things like laundry and dishes and sometimes have to run errands… Then, in the summer when the kids are home, it’s almost impossible to get any writing done. I, ahem, have to write off the writing, which is very difficult and frustrating for me.
Do you write every day, or when you have time?
I try to write every day, even just a little, though weekends are family time and so I may or may not get writing done then depending on what else we have planned.
Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I don’t outline. It feels too restrictive. I start and I go with it until I hit a barrier. Then I flow chart. I have a notebook on my desk, and I write questions to myself like, “Why does So-and-so do this?” Or, “What happens if So-and-so goes here?” And then I chart possible answers and decide which makes sense for the character and the story.
If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
It’s the first in a proposed trilogy. I hesitate to call it dystopian because the world I’ve created is very peaceful. In fact, the main character is loath to upset the apple cart because it would mean ruining that peace. She makes decisions based on a desire NOT to start a war, but… Other factions have different ideas.
Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I’m always at least reading one thing, often more than one. I go in cycles in regards to authors. In middle school I was all about Michael Crichton and Dean Koontz. In high school I went through Stephen King and Anne Rice. In college it was Neil Gaiman and Nick Hornby. I went through a John Le Carré and Kathy Reichs phase. Nowadays I’ve been enjoying Tana French, Kate Morton, Ben Aaronovitch, Alison Weir… And I’ll always, always love Shakespeare and Jane Austen and [almost] anything Sherlock Holmes.
What book/s are you reading at present?
I’m making my way through Tana French’s latest, The Trespasser.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
To start sooner. I feel like I’m making up for lost time.
If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Oh, you mean is there a book I’ve read where I’ve said, “I wish I’d written that”? There are dozens! But maybe Michael Dibdin’s The Last Sherlock Holmes Story. Because wow, just wow.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Not to compare themselves to other writers. I find that’s when I start to doubt myself and feel depressed—when I look at what other authors have accomplished and feel like I’m somehow less than them. I keep a timeline on my whiteboard in my office now that shows all the milestones in my writing career. I find it helpful in being able to see how far I’ve come.

Changers: Manifesting Destiny
Sixteen-year-old Cee has a hopeless crush on her best friend Marcus. Unfortunately for her, he’s gay. In the wake of Marcus’s older brother leaving home to join the Aerie, Marcus has become increasingly distant. Then, when Cee discovers she has a troublesome dragon named Livian living inside her things grow even more complicated.
Marcus urges Cee to go to the Magi to have Livian removed, but the more used to Livian Cee becomes, the less certain she is about letting him go. Should she change her natural self for the crush who will never love her anyway?
Excerpt:
Heat spread through her. Cee’s face elongated, her arms extended, her nails formed into claws, and her feet became suddenly very heavy. The bony spires erupted from her shoulders, and Cee was compelled to double over to allow the wings to grow.
Throughout, Cee fought the urge to resist, though her instinct was to do just that. She wondered what she looked like, caught a glimpse of red scales, and realized her eyesight had become sharper. All the details of the trees around her impressed themselves upon her brain: the cracks and flakes in the bark, the saw-tooth edges of the leaves, and every little spot and insect thereupon.
How big was she? Cee realized she was at eye level with the middle of the trees. She looked down and saw her friends pushing themselves even harder against the trunks, making way for Cee’s—or Livian’s, she supposed—tail as it snaked by.
Yes, we’re very pretty, said Livian impatiently. But we don’t have time for showing off just now.
The massive wings began to move, slowly at first, gathering speed that put the force of the helicopter’s artificial wind to shame. Cee realized she had no control over what was happening. It was all Livian, and she was housed inside him, somehow, along for the ride.
It was equal parts thrilling and petrifying, bursting through the treetops and being free of gravity. Cee would have liked to spend more time experiencing it, but there was the helicopter, like a massive black bug, and Livian went right for it.

GUEST POST: Betas and Reviewers: How Readers Helped JUSTICE UNENDING Happen
Hey there! I'm Elizabeth Spencer, author of the brand-spanking-new YA fantasy Justice Unending, which was published last week by Evernight Teen! Justice is the story of Faye Whitlock, a teenager in a very Victorian-esque society, whose unladylike adventures take a dramatic turn when she's possessed by the immortal spirit of an assassin—and the country's most wanted criminal. (You can read an excerpt here!)Sarai has graciously offered to let me chat with you guys today—not about Justice Unending, per se, but about how I wrote it!
You see, Justice was my first published novel, so I love reading about how other authors wrote theirs. So I thought… hey! Why not share my own experiences?
I've actually been posting a ton on my own blog about the publishing process, including how I found a small press, what I learned from my first professional edit, and the resources I found most useful when writing Justice. Today I thought I'd talk about the half dozen people who completely saved my butt: my beta readers and query readers.
Beta Readers Are the Absolute Best
When I first finished editing Justice Unending, I immediately started querying agents. Annnnnd… I got only one, half-hearted response.
I panicked. Clearly, the story was terrible. But I wasn't sure what was wrong with it, so I decided everything was. I started re-outlining it. I decided to change the characters. Do the plot differently! REWRITE EVERYTHING.
But before I launched my plan to burn Justice to the ground, I had someone new read it. And their feedback was shocking. They didn't think the story needed to be gutted. They thought most of it was fine, in fact. Most of their recommended changes were in the first few chapters of the story.
So I rewrote the first fourth of the story. And, just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I got other, different betas, who all loved the new draft.
Had I gone with my gut instinct, I would have destroyed most of Justice. But that's when I learned that you can't judge your own story half as well as your readers can. I needed that outside perspective.
But Query Letters Need Proofreaders, Too!
I queried agents with both my first draft and my second draft. The first one earned me a single partial request, but the second got me six full requests from agents and two contract offers from publishers.
And yes, the rewrite definitely might have helped. But I also overhauled my query letter.
I ran it by the Absolute Write Query Letter Hell Forums. I ran it by WriteOnCon (a competition that doesn't seem to exist anymore.) I used it in Pitch Wars. By the time I was done, I had gone through nine versions of it.
And I am completely sure that super-polished query was the difference between one half-hearted response and eight fully interested ones. I mean, yes. The story's important. But no one actually reads your story if they don't like your query. And that query is ultimately how I found Evernight Teen—the publisher who ultimately made Justice Unending a reality.
Basically: Beta Readers Are the Best
Justice Unending took a long time to reach where it is today—two major rewrites, nearly two years of work, and more than a hundred emails out to agents and publishers.
But it wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the brilliant, intuitive, clever, and creative people who helped me polish my story and ramp up my query. And if you're a writer, make sure you take advantage of your own betas. They're more valuable than you might know.
Elizabeth Spencer is the author of Justice Unending, a new YA fantasy released by Evernight Teen. You can read more about Justice, as well as her other stories, on her website, Elizabeth-Spencer.net.

Bio
I live in Adelaide, Australia with my husband, one cat, two dogs and a snake. I have a motorbike that I would like to ride more than I do and I love walking at the beach and listening to the waves. I've always loved reading all forms of fiction from high fantasy and paranormal to contemporary and decided the stories in my head needed to be written down. It was either that or start on medication. Unlike many, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer until a few years back. I started off doing a degree in drama but soon realized my love was in writing, though there is a play lurking somewhere on my computer. My day job is as a nurse in the operating room. I believe romance can be fun to read and write but it’s exciting to spice it up with the uncertainty that comes with suspense where the rules can be broken.
Excerpt
Cassi knew it was the brandy talking, but when would she have a Hollywood actor captive in a cabin again? He put his glass down and raised one eyebrow as he peered at her. Then he patted the couch in front of him. Okay, she had drunk two big brandies, but what was he suggesting here?
He placed a finger under her chin and lifted it so she gazed in his eyes. She gulped. He didn’t need to say anything. She would kiss him anyway. All he needed to do was ask.
“When you left that day, you took part of me with you. I’ve been looking around and meeting other people and other women trying to find it. I was a fool to let you go then. Now you’re here, Cassi, I’m not going to let you go without telling you how much I care.”
His face was close as his palm cupped her cheek. Her mouth hung open and she felt a strong ache between her legs showing the need for physical contact she had not received for so long. She could feel his breath on her lips. His eyes connected with hers and then moved down to her lips. He ran his thumb along her lower lip and she moved forward. She knew this wasn’t real and something he had rehearsed, but didn’t care. He only had to say the word and she would have sex with him all night long. He didn’t say anything more, but their lips almost touched. Then he moved away.
Breathe.
“It’s a scene from our next episode. It doesn’t turn out well as she’s a vampire and sells me out. I get back at her through some crazy ritual, though. Sorry I took the advantage by adding your name.”
Declan was still holding his palm against her cheek and she didn’t want him to move away.
“You’re good.” He was more than good as she was putty in his hands right now.

#WeeklyMenu Week 170
Happy Halloween from my Minecraft monsters. I took the boys to our local downtown event where they got to trick-or-treat at all the businesses on main street. They spent a half hour walking and got a good half a bag of candy. After that, they were too tired and we want back home. I was thankful it was only a half hour, because it was my job to carry the box heads. That was not my favorite part of the day.The strange thing about the day was, we didn't get a single trick-or-treater at our door. I thought with all the apartment kids that all ways hang out near the house, we would get a few. It wasn't even raining! Oh well. It was a nice quiet night.
Enjoy this weeks menu!
Monday- Ranch Oven Fried Chicken
Tuesday- Cajun Honey Lime Chicken Wings
Wednesday- Doritos Taco Salad
Thursday- Bowtie Chicken Caesar Salad
Friday- Chicken Stir Fry

Review:
I have to say, Danielle Annett sucked me into a world of magnificent beings and creatures. Even though I haven't read the first two books in the serise, I didn't really need the back story to understand what was going on in Burned By Fire.
We follow Aria as she learns to deal with her mate bond to a Shifter and the threat of her mothers reach into the world of abnormal beings. It seemed like everywhere poor Aria turned, she was being attacked by her mothers hench men. She couldn't get away, and even though she had the protection of the pack (which is awesome) she wanted to be her own person and sometimes got herself into situations that she couldn't handle alone.
I really enjoyed learning about the Psykers and the Shifters. There were also other mythical creatures like vampires, witches and nymphs. All these creatures melded together into a wonderful story with action and romance.
I give this book a solid four. It kept my attention and was left open for a sequel that I can't wait to read.

Pre-Order Link: Amazon
Excerpt:
“Do you honestly believe what we felt for each other was a mistake?”
“It was. That’s why we were castigated.” It was a sin of the worst kind.
Mason shakes his head. “I refuse to believe that. I may not remember what happened, but there’s one thing I’m sure of.” He draws me to him and wraps his arms around my waist, anchoring me to him. “What we felt for each other wasn’t wrong. Anything so right couldn’t have been immoral.”
His lips are on mine before I can think to oppose or argue that his point of view is wrong. The fighter in me urges me to knee him in the groin and follow with a beat-down, but I end up struggling for a moment before relenting. He’s determined to seduce some sense into me and I’m running out of will to keep from trapping myself in this mind game. Whether his intention is for me to trust him or he simply wants to help me through the monster of doubt eating away at me, I don’t know. Nor do I care.
I allow him to take me beyond my grief and into a sweet, almost painful harmony. The fight goes out of me and what few reservations remain melt away with a quick stroke of Mason’s tongue. Every feeling of helplessness evaporates with each term of endearment that escapes his half-open lips as he alternates between kissing my mouth, face, and neck. I yield to him, our caresses becoming more fervent and urgent with each passing second.

Liberation
by Kate L. Mary
(Moonchild, #2)
Publication date: November 1st 2016
Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult
Synopsis:From two-time award-winning author, Kate L. Mary, comes the sequel to MOONCHILD, “a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of YA fantasy.” After surviving the auction and a near death experience at the hands of Asher’s father, Scarlett Moon is more than ready for life to settle down, and with each passing day she starts to feel more at home in Columbus. Even with Asher ready for more than Scarlett can give, she manages to fall into a routine that almost feels like a normal life.
But one distress call is all it takes to destroy the serenity the group has managed to build.
As far as anyone knew, Paget had moved on with her life after storming out months ago, but the fear in her voice when she calls the warehouse tells a different story. Even though Scarlett never liked Asher’s ex to begin with, she can’t help feeling a little bit responsible for Paget’s situation.
Searching in the seediest part of the city, the group picks up clues as they try to piece together what might have happened. The more Scarlett learns about what the other woman has been through over the last few months, the more concerned she becomes. Even worse: there’s no sign of Paget anywhere in Columbus.
With all the clues pointing in one direction, the group leaves the city and heads for Hocking Hills. Only it seems the danger may have followed them, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake and putting Paget in more danger than ever before. As Scarlett learns more about the woman who used to hold Asher’s heart, she suddenly finds herself unable to deny how she really feels about him. Only, with Paget in trouble, Scarlett can’t help wondering if Asher might still have feelings for his ex.
