Binge-Worthy Wednesday: Specials by Scott Westerfield

Welcome to Binge-Worthy Wednesday, where we spotlight books that are impossible to put down! This week, we're diving back into the thrilling world of Scott Westerfeld’s Specials, the intense and action-packed finale of the original Uglies trilogy. With its high-stakes rebellion, haunting beauty enhancements, and a heroine caught between loyalty and transformation, Specials delivers a fast-paced ride that will keep you flipping pages late into the night.

Title: Specials

By: Scott Westerfeld

Genre: Dystopian

Pages: 374

Release Date: May 9th, 2006

Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary from Goodreads:"Special Circumstances": The words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a repellent, rebellious ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumor -- frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary. And now, in the third book in the series, Tally's been turned into a Special: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid.
The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember. Most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more.
Still, it's easy to tune that out -- until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.

Review:Specials brings the original Uglies trilogy to a sharp and thrilling close, ramping up both the action and emotional stakes. Tally’s transformation into a Special adds a chilling layer to her character as she grapples with her identity, loyalty, and the cost of perfection. Westerfeld’s world remains vividly imaginative and unsettling, with enough twists to keep readers hooked. While some character development felt rushed and the pacing occasionally faltered, the novel’s strong themes of autonomy, rebellion, and self-discovery make it a satisfying and thought-provoking conclusion to the series.

Trope Tuesday: Historical Whodunit with Kelli Gardiner

Welcome to this week’s Trope Tuesday, where we dive into the classic yet ever-compelling world of the Historical Whodunit! Today’s spotlight is on Kelli Gardiner, whose work masterfully blends the intrigue of a murder mystery with the rich texture of a bygone era. If you love unraveling secrets amid candlelit ballrooms, coded letters, or smoky Victorian alleys, you’re in for a treat.

Title: Miss Caroline Bingley, Private Investigator

By: Kelly Gardiner & Sharmini Kumar

Genre: Historical Mystery

Pages: 368

Release Date: April 2nd, 2025

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Summary from Goodreads:A missing maid. A murder most foul. A highly imprudent adventure. Only her fine eyes can uncover the truth.
Two years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, Miss Caroline Bingley is staying at her brother's country estate within an easy ride of Mr and Mrs Darcy's home, Pemberley, and wondering if there's more to life than playing cribbage and paying calls on country neighbours. So when Georgiana Darcy's maid, Jayani, vanishes - and worse, Georgiana disappears in search of her - Caroline races to London to find them both, and quickly discovers a shocking, cold-blooded murder.
Soon Caroline and Georgiana are careering through the gritty, grimy underbelly of London assisted by Caroline's trusty manservant, Gordon, and demanding answers of shady characters, police magistrates and mysterious East India Company-men to discover the killer. Along the way they uncover the cost of Empire on India and its people ... and Miss Bingley's incomparable powers of investigation. As Caroline puts her superior new talents to work, she finds out exactly what an accomplished, independent woman with a sharp mind and a large fortune can achieve - even when pitted against secrets, scandal, and a murderer with no mercy.

Review:This playful reimagining of Austen's world brings Caroline Bingley into the spotlight with a surprising new role, as a detective. The premise is clever and the writing often charming, with witty nods to the original Pride and Prejudice. However, the mystery itself felt underdeveloped and the pacing uneven. While it was fun to see Caroline take center stage and grow beyond her traditional character, the story sometimes leaned too heavily on its concept without delivering a fully satisfying mystery. A light, inventive read for Austen fans, but not quite as sharp or gripping as it could have been.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

SilvercloakL.K. Steven, Laura Steven
Silvercloak is a darkly seductive and emotionally intense fantasy that kicks off a bold new series with high stakes and a heroine you can’t look away from. Saffron Killoran’s descent into the criminal underworld of pain and pleasure fueled magic is gripping, and the undercover tension is thick with danger, secrets, and moral gray areas. The world-building is vivid and immersive, though at times the pacing felt a bit uneven. Still, the twists, layered characters, and brooding romance kept me hooked. A solid four stars for its originality, high emotional stakes, and addictive storytelling.

Saturday Sips: 4 Star Fiction

Welcome to Saturday Sips, where I serve up a fresh selection of four-star fiction that’s perfect for cozying up with this weekend. These books might not have been flawless, but they delivered compelling stories, memorable characters, and plenty of reasons to keep turning the pages. If you’re looking for great reads with just a little extra something, you’re in the right place.

One of Us Is DeadJeneva Rose

One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose is a gripping thriller that kept me hooked with its intense suspense and clever twists. The story’s sharp pacing and high stakes made it a fast, thrilling read, though a few plot points felt a bit predictable. Still, the strong character dynamics and unexpected moments elevated the tension and kept me invested until the very end. A solid four-star read for fans of dark, psychological mysteries.

The Poppy FieldsNikki Erlick
The Poppy Fields by Nikki Erlick is a beautifully imagined and deeply emotional speculative novel that explores grief, healing, and the complexities of human connection. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious treatment center promising a cure for heartbreak, the story follows four strangers whose intertwined journeys reveal profound truths about loss and hope. While the premise is compelling and the characters relatable, I found some of the plot’s pacing uneven and certain questions left a bit open-ended. Still, Erlick’s tender prose and thoughtful exploration of resilience make this a moving and memorable read. A solid four stars for its heartfelt themes and unique concept.
And Then There Were NoneAgatha Christie

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie is a classic mystery that brilliantly delivers suspense, clever plotting, and an unforgettable twist. Christie’s masterful storytelling keeps readers guessing as ten strangers are trapped on an isolated island, each hiding dark secrets. While the pacing can feel a bit slow at times compared to modern thrillers, the intricate puzzle and atmospheric tension make it a must-read for fans of the genre. A solid four-star read that showcases why Christie remains the queen of mystery.
Don't Swipe RightL.M. Chilton

Don’t Swipe Right by L.M. Chilton is a fun and clever romantic thriller that kept me entertained from start to finish. The story balances humor, suspense, and romance in a fresh way, with engaging characters and a plot full of unexpected twists. While a few moments felt a bit predictable, the witty dialogue and fast pace made up for it. If you’re looking for a lighthearted read with just enough edge, this one is definitely worth your time. Four stars!

Great Big Beautiful LifeEmily Henry

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry is a charming and heartfelt story that blends humor, emotion, and beautifully drawn characters. Henry’s signature wit shines through, making the journey both relatable and uplifting. While I wished for a bit more depth in the plot’s resolution, the warmth and authenticity of the characters carried the story effortlessly. A delightful read that earns a solid four stars.

Thriller Thursday: We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough

Welcome to Thriller Thursday, where suspense runs high and the pages won’t stop turning. This week’s pick had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, with twists that kept me guessing and a tension that never let up. If you love heart-pounding plots and characters you can’t help but root for, you’re in for a wild ride.

Title: We Live Here Now

By: Sarah Pinborough

Genre: Thriller

Pages: 291

Release Date: May 20th, 2025

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Summary from Goodreads:After an accident that nearly kills her, Emily and her husband, Freddie, move from London to a beautiful Dartmoor country house called Larkin Lodge. The house is gorgeous, striking—and to Emily, something about it feels deeply wrong. Old boards creak at night; fires extinguish; and books fall from the shelves—all of it stemming from the terrible presence she feels in the third-floor room.
But these things happen only when Emily is alone, so are they happening at all? She is still medically fragile. Her post-sepsis condition can cause hallucinatory side effects, which means she cannot fully trust her senses. Freddie does not notice anything odd and is happy with their chance at a fresh start. She, however, starts to believe the house is haunted by someone who had been murdered in it even though she can find no evidence of a wrongful death. As bizarre events pile up and her marriage starts to crumble, Emily becomes obsessed with discovering the truth about Larkin Lodge. But just as the house has secrets so do Emily and her husband.

Review:We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough is an atmospheric novel that intrigued me with its dark themes and eerie tone, but ultimately left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. While the author’s signature blend of psychological suspense and unsettling mystery was present, the plot felt somewhat scattered, and the multiple perspectives made it hard to follow at times. Though the writing was evocative and the premise promising, I found myself wishing for more cohesive storytelling and stronger character development to fully engage with the narrative. A solid read, but not quite as gripping as I had hoped.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Binge-Worthy Wednesday: Three Five Star Reads

Welcome to this week’s Binge-Worthy Wednesday, where I spotlight the books that kept me reading way past bedtime, and loving every second of it. This time, I’m bringing you not one, but three five-star reads that completely swept me off my feet. Whether you’re in the mood for something emotional, thrilling, or swoon-worthy, these picks hit all the right notes and reminded me exactly why I adore getting lost in a good book.

The Thirteenth Child by Erin A. Craig is an atmospheric, spellbinding tale that perfectly blends eerie folklore with haunting mystery. From the very first page, I was drawn into the chilling world Craig has created—where whispers of curses and long-buried secrets unravel with every chapter. The writing is lush and immersive, the pacing sharp, and the tension masterfully maintained. With a strong, layered heroine and a plot that kept me guessing, this book delivered everything I love about gothic fantasy. A stunning, darkly enchanting read that earns every one of its five stars.

My Next Breath: A Memoir by Jeremy Renner is a powerful, unflinching reflection on survival, resilience, and finding purpose after unimaginable trauma. With raw honesty and emotional depth, Renner recounts the harrowing details of his near-fatal snowplow accident and the long, painful road to recovery that followed. But this memoir is more than a story of physical healing—it's about rediscovering life, redefining strength, and choosing hope in the face of overwhelming odds. Renner’s voice is humble, reflective, and deeply human. This is not just a celebrity memoir—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the will to keep breathing. Five stars for its vulnerability, heart, and inspiration.

Isola by Allegra Goodman is a beautifully written, emotionally rich novel that quietly sneaks up on you and stays with you long after the final page. Goodman crafts a tender coming-of-age story wrapped in themes of identity, first love, grief, and the fragile beauty of connection. Her prose is luminous, simple yet deeply resonant, and the characters feel heartbreakingly real. With a subtle touch, Isola captures the quiet moments that shape us and the internal journeys we often take alone. It's the kind of novel that invites reflection and rewards careful reading. A stunning, introspective gem that fully deserves its five stars.

Book Review: The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore

There’s just something about a good romance novel that makes you want to curl up, sigh dramatically, and root for love to conquer all. With characters that felt real and chemistry that sparked off the page, it was a story that reminded me why I keep reaching for this genre.

Title: The Christmas Tree Farm

By: Laurie Gilmore

Genre: Romance

Pages: 369

Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary from Goodreads:From the author of the viral TikTok sensation, The Pumpkin Spice Café, comes the only spicy grumpy x sunshine Christmas romcom you need this year!
Kira North hates Christmas. Which is unfortunate since she just bought a Christmas tree farm in a town that’s too cute for its own good.
Bennett Ellis is on vacation in Dream Harbor taking a break from his life in California. And most importantly, taking a break from his latest run of disastrous dates.
After a run in with Kira in her fields, Ben has no intention of offering to help the grumpy owner set up her tree farm, despite the fact she’s clearly got no idea what she’s doing.
Kira knows she should stop being so stubborn, but her farm is not all cute and cozy like people always show on social media, it’s borderline dangerous with no heating, and she’d rather no one saw it.
But somehow fate finds Ben at Kira’s farm once more, and as Kira watches him swing an ax at the first tree, she finds herself appreciating his strength and questionning why she refused help in the first place..
The Christmas Tree Farm is a spicy romantic mystery for fans of Gilmore Girls with a HEA guaranteed!

This week on the blog, we’re blending two of my favorite...

This week on the blog, we’re blending two of my favorite things: great food and great books. Our culinary journey takes us to the vibrant island of Taiwan — home to bustling night markets, comforting noodle soups, and some of the best street food in the world. I’ve put together a Taiwanese-inspired weekly menu that’s full of bold flavors and easy recipes perfect for busy families looking to try something new. From bubble tea to three cup chicken, this week’s meals are a celebration of Taiwan’s rich food culture.

While the smells of soy, ginger, and sesame fill my kitchen, my current read has me equally immersed in a world of mystery and family secrets. I’ve been reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult, a novel that masterfully explores the complexities of memory, truth, and loyalty. As Delia Hopkins unravels her father’s carefully guarded past, Picoult’s signature multi-perspective storytelling keeps me hooked with every chapter. It’s the perfect companion to a warm bowl of beef noodle soup and a cozy night in.

Let's get to the week's menu. Enjoy!
