Google Home Needs to Establish Itself Apart from the Echo

The Echo had a two-year market presence before Google Home launched. The two-year gap is quite a challenge for Google Home. But, Google Home is unveiling updates that may as well establish the brand apart from the Echo.

The updates make the smart hub a hands-free calling device, and it recognizes several voices. In hands-free calls, a user is able to ask Google Home to call a certain number on their contact list. Voice recognition identifies the person’s voice and knows which contact to call.

Once the person activates Google Home by saying, “OK Google,” or “Hey Google,” he can issue a command requesting a call to go through.

Amazon Echo sports this feature, but the devices in question have to have the Alexa App installed. The presence of the app determines the function’s success. Amazon may have control of 70% of the market, according to market data, but Google Home updates are set to create a strong market presence for Google Home.

Why Mars Is The 2nd Best Planet For Humans

When Earth and Mars were formed 4 billion years ago, they had so many similarities. They both had lakes, rivers, craters and volcanoes. But somewhere along the way, something changed in one of the planets.

In the warm burbling water of Earth, amino acids, through chemistry became complex molecules and in a mysterious process these became single cells which replicated themselves to form oxygen-exhaling organisms knows as algae. Through other complex processes, that no one still understands, human beings were formed.

Things did not go so well for Mars as it dried up. Being half the size of Earth, it cooled off faster and its iron-nickel core solidified. This, supposedly, led to the shutting down of its magnetic field and it lost its protective shield—the kind that still protects Earth from cosmic and solar rays. The Martian atmosphere was destroyed before its algae, if it had any, was able to make the air warm and thick. Before any creatures thrived on the red planet, it turned to rust and remains barren to this day.

That makes Mars the best planet.

Ashwin Vasavada, shares this view. Most scientists, if asked, say that people go to Mars because it is close. A journey to Mars takes about half a year. NASA will give you that same answer. But Ashwin has a different answer. He says it is because Mars is like early Earth. It is familiar.

It was familiar even before robots were sent there. It is the only planet visible with eyes alone. Mars is the center of several myths. For instance, Babylonians named it after the god of destruction, Nergal. The Romans called it Mars, the god of war and the Chinese named it Ying-huo, the shimmering planet.

Mars has always been unique. One reason for this is because it is visible as an obvious red, unblinking dot. Another thing, it seems to move backward. It appears to move from west to east.

As technology advanced, Mars became a prime target and its similarities to Earth were discovered. Mars and Earth are very different from the rest of the planets. A day in Mars (known as a sol) is 40 minutes longer than a day in Earth.

The more people observed Mars, the more it became easier to imagine it being just like Earth, probably crawling with life. In 1892, Camille Falammarion, a French astronomer, wrote and said that, “the present inhabitation of Mars by a race superior to ours is very probable.”

The current technology has proven that there are no Martians but Mars used to be habitable at some point in the past. This discovery may be a big disappointment to most people but for some scientists, it raises an important question: Why here? Why us?

Elon Musk has disclosed his plans to place the first human settlers on the red planet. If this succeeds, the first form of life on Mars could be humans from Earth. The experience of living on Mars will most likely be a horrible one, considering the atmosphere. The settlers will have to live in spacesuits; otherwise they will freeze and boil to death, simultaneously.

Swipe to Switch Apps

You can switch between apps by swiping your finger right or left across the Home Indicator. This lets you move quickly (and conveniently) to the app you were using.

To See Multitasking Controls

If you swipe up from the Home Indicator you will be taken to Home but if you do it a little more slowly, the iPhone’s Multitasking will come up. In this view you will see previews of the recently used apps. To use any one of them, just tap on it.

You can bring this view up even more quickly if you want; just swipe up from the bottom left diagonally.

Customize Control Center

The Control Center lets you access some of your iPhone’s features without necessarily launching an app. If you have a phone in the iPhone X series, place your finger at the top right side of the screen and swipe down to access the Control Center. If you swipe from any other side of the top of the display, you will open the Notification Center.

The Control Center is much more fun than you think. You can customize it. Launch the Settings app and select Control Center then go to Customize Controls. On the screen that will appear, you can add whatever buttons you want.

Invert Bright Apps

The Smart Invert Colors is an Accessibility feature that can help with bright white pages. It inverts the display making black white and white black. This feature is smart because it will not invert media items such as photos. It is very helpful when you are using your phone in the dark. To enable it, go to Settings > General > Accessibility then check Smart Invert Colors.

Fast Access to Flashlight or Camera

iPhone X phones have two icons at the bottom of their lock screen; a camera to the right and a flashlight to the left. These two icons are very important. However, tapping them will not do anything and to trigger them you must use 3-D touch (touch and hold).

Viewing the Today Screen

The Today Screen is found on the left side of the Notification Center. It contains widgets which sometimes have useful information. To see this screen, swipe down from the top of the screen (just not from the top right) to bring up the Notification Center. Then swipe to the right to see the Today view.

Unsubscribing from Notifications

In iOS 12, notifications can be managed from the Notification Center. Swipe left on a notification to bring up a sub-menu. Here you can tap on Manage, Erase All or View.

Siri Shortcuts

Go to Settings then Siri & Search. In the screen that will come up, you will see a Suggested Shortcuts list. Tap on whichever one you think will make a useful shortcut, record a key phrase and you have yourself a new Siri command.

Go to the Top with One Tap

If you have been scrolling down a list for a while and want to go back to the top, you do not need to scroll back up. Tap the menu bar or the top of the app you are using.

How to Get Automatic Updates in iOS 12

iOS 12 comes with a new feature that makes it very easy for your iPhone to stay up to date. The best thing is this feature is turned on by default in iOS 12—no other action is necessary from your side to get software updates the minute Apple makes them available.

As long as the Automatic Updates is on, you will be notified on your phone anytime there is an available software update. This notification lets you know that the update will be downloaded and installed later in the night. The previous iOS versions do not offer this feature. With those versions, you receive a notification about the update and an option to either delay the download or download it immediately.

The idea with this iOS 12 approach is to carry out the process in the background. iOS 12 is still in beta and, therefore, you may still need to work some kinks out. For instance, you may have to try a few times before your iPhone finally updates to the newest versions.

However, with this OS, if your iPhone fails to update to the newest version, Automatic Updates will give it another try the next night. It is still not clear whether your iPhone should be plugged in or connected to Wifi for Automatic Updates to work. Since the updates are installed overnight, chances are that your phone will be charging and connected to Wifi.

Some people do not like the idea of updates installing automatically on their iPhones. This is actually a good policy because iOS updates might introduce new bugs. Anyway, if you prefer to have other people test out new updates before you can install them, feel free to turn off Automatic Updates on your device.

Here is how you do that:

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.Go to General > Software UpdateTap Automatic Updates. You will see that it is turned on if you are using iOS 12.Toggle the slider off.

To manually check if there are any new updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If you have Automatic Updates turned on, there is no need to check. You only need to check if you have it turned off then choose whether or not you will download the new update.

Getting Automatic App Updates

The Automatic Updates feature discussed above only works for iOS updates. Nonetheless, if you want to have your apps up to date at all times, there is a feature for that too.

Launch the Settings app.Go to iTunes & App Store.Manage the automatic downloads you would like to get automatically in the Automatic Downloads part.

In the case of Books & Audiobooks, Apps, and Music, this feature controls the download of purchases made on all your other iOS devices (those using your Apple ID). When you toggle on this feature, apps will update automatically even without your consent. Under the Automatic Downloads there is a Use Cellular Data control. By default, it is turned off, so the updates will only be downloaded when your phone is connected to Wifi.

Elon Musk Dream To Mars

If you were told today that you would be able to go settle on Mars, you’d probably laugh it off but Elon Musk seems to think otherwise. Elon Musk, the billionaire, the tech-preneur and the ‘Tony Stark’ of the real world, is taking things pretty seriously and wants to put as many as 1 million humans on Mars in the coming decade. Many people dismissed the claim as ‘only to generate publicity and some more funds’, but possible or not it truly is something we humans will ponder about.

When speaking at the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico, Elon Musk expressed his plans and the latest updates on the preparation.

“What I really want to do here is to make Mars seem possible – make it seem as though it’s something that we could do in our lifetimes, and that you can go,” Musk said in his presentation. The speech was exceptionally inspiring and well-thought out. It definitely motivated a number of attendees and it seems now that Mars is genuinely within reach.

The graphic video was very well made and showed the journey to Mars. It will use gigantic reusable rockets which will propel the spaceship, carrying humans, into space. Once it reaches the space the rocket will detach and return to earth. Here, the rocket will be attached a fuel tank and the rocket will again take off to space. In space, it will help refueling of the spaceship carrying humans. Once this too has been done, the tanker will return back to earth for further uses while the Spaceship will depart to Mars. This spaceship will land on Mars. But that’s not all, the spaceship will return back for further journeys. Musk wants to hold on dearly to Mars. He plans to colonize it which he thinks will take 20 years or so.

The journey will be arranged every two years (26 months to be exact) when Earth and Mars come closest to each other.

It is not the first time Musk has made such tall claims and even before many he has failed in his claims many times but he has succeeded too. SpaceX has actually gone from one triumph to another. Over the years they have launched and successfully landed them back with precision. Just weeks before his speech at the International Astronautical Congress, an unmanned rocket exploded mid-air and failed but Musk seems ever confident.

The Guardian has made claims that Elon Musk’s Fail-Fast approach is purely intentional as he wants to learn and win fast. His claim of reaching Mars in his lifetime seems to be an indication of the same.

With all good things the only main hurdle in sending people to Mars, as Musk pointed out, is the cost involved. Currently, the trip to Mars is estimated to cost around $10 billion per person. Musk is thinking of cutting the cost down to around $200,000 which he thinks is viable. Musk says the money will be coming from a Public-Private Partnership which he expects to snowball into something huge.

Whether or not we see such a miraculous astronautical success in our lifetime but it seems this is a step in the right direction. Someone somewhere has to start something to focus everyone attention towards a long lost dream and Elon Musk is the one pulling the strings to reach Mars as soon as possible. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Elon himself is one of the first 100 passengers to visit Mars.

Movies to watch in VR Gear

One of the best uses of the Virtual Reality sets which a layman can think of today is its use in watching movies. Who won’t like to watch a movie from the comfort of his home and that too with the same screen size? The VR sets provide such an incredible option to view the movies on a theater size screen as you munch on your popcorn while sitting or on your favorite couch (I bet Sheldon would definitely love it).

With the 360-degree feature, you can not only watch a movie (duh everyone does this) but be a part of the movie as the scene unfolds around you.

But today, not many full-length movies are yet available for the virtual reality. Having said this, there are still some movies which people can fully enjoy. It is only a matter of time before movie studios like 20th Century Fox, Disney, Marvel, Warner Brothers start releasing movies for VR (these studios are already working on it). 1. The Lion King Musical VR:

The primary objective of any director is to make the viewer’s get immersed in the movie, make them feel the emotions, experience the different surroundings and be a part of the epic journey. This was not completely possible in regular movies but with the virtual reality, the movie has worked wonders.

People always have had a curiosity about life outside our earth. This is what has always intrigued many directors to make movies on the fantasy genre. Recently we witnessed such a movie about life on Mars, The Martian.

It showed how actor Matt Damon battles for survival on Mars. Everyone wants to be in his position to experience the adventure.

So, 20th Century Fox released a short 15-20 minutes long video from the movie which was shot during the actual filming of the movie and it gives the perspective of the actor in the movie.

DC Entertainment and Warner brothers teamed up with cloud graphics firm Otoy to create a VR experience like no other. They have let the viewer’s experience the bat cave from all possible angles enough to satisfy every fan long desire to explore the bat cave for themselves.

This is a unique idea and ‘Bat’ fans just cannot afford to miss it.

5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens VR

If there is any wish list of movies to watch on VR across the world then Star Wars, without a doubt, will be first on every list.

ILMxLAB studio, Google, and Verizon have joined hands to create a Star Wars experience for VR. The Force Awakens VR experience is available on the Star Wars website and can be seen online. It is the first step towards a large-scale development by the studio but it is enough for a die-hard fan.

Google’s Daydream View VR Headset – Review

Google’s Daydream View VR brings Virtual Reality to the android system not to mention it’s inexpensive.

It was about time Google took the VR tech seriously and with the announcement of Google’s own Mobile-based VR headset, Daydream View, it seems they will give a tough competition to some established players.

Some striking features of Google’s Daydream View

1. Pegged at $79, the Daydream is easily the cheapest headset with a remote among its competitors. The closer competitor being Samsung Gear VR. It is almost $20 cheaper than the Gear VR which beats the cost competition hands-down.

2. The best thing about the Google VR is that it is android based and this will enable it to work with any android phone which supports the Daydream platform (as of now the Daydream VR is only Pixel based). In the near future majority of the phones will have that compatibility. This will be across the brands which will definitely bring in most consumers, unlike the Samsung VR which needs only a Samsung phone. Another good thing is that it will be having Google Play Store which will feature numerous 360-degree content.

3. The look and feel of the VR headset is sleek, smooth and comfortable. It is lightweight (only 0.48 pounds) and users will be able to wear the set for hours without feeling it on your head, unlike the Cardboard which felt heavy within minutes and even Gear VR (0.76 pounds). The soft cloth headset is a relief to the design and even to the user.

4. The Daydream has even eliminated the most tiring job of adjusting a number of cords, ports, and other things before you actually start using it. With the Daydream, you just have to place the phone on the front door, close it and adjust the image till it gets sharp. Once this much is done, you are good to go. This is as easy as it can probably get.

Quality-wise the Daydream is at par with the Gear VR and even a better at times. Like almost every VR set, games look better than the graphic videos. Going by what the future holds for the VR industry, it is better to have some freedom in choosing between the different phones to be used on the Daydream, rather than stick to only a single brand like in Samsung’s case.

More than the headset there has been even more fascination about the remote. Google has differentiated itself with this motion controller which is both compact and at the same time highly responsive.

What is the Catch here?

Unlike its competitors, Google is a new player in VR tech and due to that there just aren’t enough apps on the play store. As of now, there is literally no content available for users.  Unless there is enough content people will not buy. This is one area where Gear VR is leaping ahead in the competition.

Another downside is that the platform is unlikely to extend to iOS. So google may actually lose a big smartphone user market.

There are not many thumbs down for Google VR when you look it from the cost to quality perspective and also from the fact that this is Google’s first big step in VR.

While the Daydream may seem a mixed bag of features, it is actually a fairly good option to invest in. The android base and the cost make it a worthy option with the only major drawback being the availability of Daydream Platform supporting phones which are close to none today.
