Between Land and Sea by Joanne Guidoccio

After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged beyond recognition. The horrified banker abandons her on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England, leaving her to face a difficult human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.

With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, Isabella evolves into the persona of Barbara Davies. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers.Image

A little about Joaanne Guidoccio . . .

In high school, I dabbled in poetry, but decided to wait until I had more life experiences before writing a novel. The original plan was to get a general arts degree and take a few years off to travel and write. Instead, I gave in to my practical Italian side and obtained degrees in mathematics and education.

While I experienced many satisfying moments during my teaching career, I never found the time and energy to write. In 2008, I took advantage of early retirement. Slowly, a writing practice emerged, and my articles and book reviews started appearing in newspapers, magazines and online.

My debut novel, Between Land and Sea, a paranormal romance about a middle-aged mermaid, was released by Soul Mate Publishing on September 17, 2013.

I live and write in Guelph, Ontario.

What is the Faeth Fiada?

What is the Faeth Fiada?

According to Irish Mythology, a Faeth Fiada is a veil or magic mist of invisibility used by the Tuatha De Danann to hide from human eyes. Kalen uses the Faeth Fiada several times in Marked by Destiny.

Who are the Tuatha De Danann?

Who are the Tuatha De Danann?

Tuatha De Danann means tribe of goddess Danu. According to Irish mythology, the Tuatha De are a tribe of supernaturally gifted people from four cities: Falias, Gorias, Murias and Finias. They arrived in Ireland on a cloud of mist (depending on what version you read). Led by Nuada, their King, they conquered the inhabitants of Ireland, the Fir Bolg. The Tuatha De fought a second battle against the Fomorians to maintain control of Ireland. They were not successful in the third battle against the Milesians. Once defeated, the land was divided between the Milesians who ruled the surface and the Tuatha De who ruled the underground. A fictional version of the third battle is in Marked by Destiny.

Faeries, Faeries and more Faeries

Faeries, Faeries and more Faeries

To celebrate the release of Marked by Destiny, I plan to share a few photos of vintage faeries this week and a little faerie folklore.

Faerie appearance: Generally, faeries are thought to be human in appearance with magical powers. In folklore, faeries are often described as a species unrelated to humans or angels, a form of a demon, or as the undead. Some folklorists believe that faeries are a conquered race living in hiding. This is the premise for Marked by Destiny!

New Year, New Journey, New Books

What’s new for 2014?

I hope many things.

As you know my novel, Marked by Destiny, was released on December 23, 2013. I loved writing this book because it  is dark and light and filled with magic and romance.

I finished a light and fun book called Before You. I’m excited about this book because it reminds me of the idea that what we think we want in life isn’t always what we need. I’ll be posting more information about this book soon.

I’m working on a book called First and Forever. This book is based on the idea of rekindling love and unwinding misunderstandings and mistakes.

Finally, I’m working on a book continuing with some of the characters from Marked by Destiny tentatively named, Marked for Redemption. For anyone who has read the first book, I would love some feedback and impressions.

Happy New Year!
