Isn't Onta that dude that was like "Social Justice/PC has gone too far!" when someone asked them about the use of the term "traps" in porn comics? Maybe I'm mistaking them for someone else?
I haven’t seen him say that but I’ve talked to him about that sort of thing. I personally think that porn work requires a different critical approach than non porn work. I wouldn’t want to tell someone what fantasy they find personally turns them on is wrong, but everything published is of course up for criticism. It also sounds like you’re referring to things he’s said outside of his work, and yeahhhhhh, personally I try to use respectful terms (or ask what the people I’m speaking to prefer) in referring to a group that I am not part of.
I talked to a couple trans women about Onta’s work, after I saw people people calling it transphobic.
(although Onta’s work in Island is about gay men and not trans women)
The women I talked to were not huge fans of his content – one woman pointed out his idealized bodies – the same way that a lot of porn has an unrealistic standard for cis women’s bodies - bodies that exists as sex objects.
I was talking to Avee Bee (who runs the excellent ZEAL) about the idea of her writing an article for Island about her experience as a trans lady reading work like Onta’s and other comics.
I don’t expect to agree with everyone whose work I publish, but I think that an ongoing discussion is important, and criticism is important.

The Dirty Pair Had A Progressive Transgender Character… in 1985
It’s incredibly rare to find transgender characters in media. Even rarer to find positive portrayals of trans characters. Rarer than both of those, however, are sci-fi settings which depicts a hopeful future for transgender people. Which is why I was rather surprised to find that The Dirty Pair, a somewhat fanservicey comedy anime from the 80s, had one of the most progressive depictions of a…

Giannis, are you doing anything for Island? If not, what are you working on right now? Honest to god, everytime it's greece's economy in the news (which is fucking often tbh) I think of you.
Hey anon! I really really want to do somethig for island. Right now I’m in the army for a just a bit more and will be getting back to comics ASAP. There are a couple of really cool things going around tha I can’t wait to get to work on, and I definitely want to work on something for island.

Spanish cartoonist, Emma Rios joined me and Brandon to talk about her comics work. Her latest work can be found in the pages Island Magazine from Image comics(which she is editor of, along with episode cohost Brandon Graham). Emma also has, along with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick the second volume of Pretty Deadly coming in the fall. Thirdly, Emma is writing the 8house series Mirror with artist Hwei Lim. Emma has some great thoughts around her work and I am always happy to talk comics with her. I was supposed to interview Emma while in the UK, but was far too sick with a terrible convention crud to be able to do it.
