Does it bother you that readers don't consider your comics indie anymore? Certainly they are still alt? If comics were sectioned into genres like novels are in a bookstore where would you shelve your own books? I dream of the day that superhero comics can

A big part of my career is that In coming up I didn’t feel like my work fit in Indy comics or mainstream. I guess what I do tends to be Sci-fi, and I’d be more than cool being in that section.

I don’t think I’ll ever be considered mainstream by anyone, just because I wont work for Marvel or DC. (because fuck those guys) But I would be more than happy if the stuff I did was ever seen as Ghost world, mainstream. but I’m not reallly holding my breath.

I do have a theory that live action superhero movies and tv shows tend to weaken the comics as the best place that makes superhero stuff. When done well in film, the comics start to feel like less of the REAL version of the characters. Like Iron man or Jessica Jones.

modesevengraphics:

One time me and my buddy Dave went to an autograph session for Brandon Graham (@royalboiler) to promote the release of the Multiple Warheads TPB.

Dave has an Xbox 360 HDDVD player. He only owns one HDDVD, which is Fast and Furious Toyko Drift, because “why the fuck would you need any other movies?” He tries to get people to autograph it “in an continual failed attempt to recoup the investment in a HDDVD player.”

Anyway, we get to the front of the line, and Dave asks Brandon to please draw “something obscene.” This was the result.

The dude in front of us in line wanted a drawing of Wolverine, but there was a delay as Mr. Graham realized he had no idea what Wolverine actually looked like. INDIE CRED FOR DAYS!

Always appreciate how vocal you are about standing up for creators against big comics, was wondering if you knew much about how creators are taken care of in Japan by comparison to the US big 2. I feel like there's much more new original content in manga c

A lot of the mainstream Shonen stuff I’ve read about seems like a scene I wouldn’t like. but that said, I do get the idea that creators and assistants are mostly treated quite well. (aside from the sometimes crazy work schedules)  I do feel like after DBZ mainstream Shonen books really boiled down how to make these long Naruto length epics, that (in my option) take wayyy too much story control from editors and reader suggestions.

There’s so much stuff being made in Japan though I imagine that there is every range of the spectrum.

I remember being really annoyed reading Bakuman- It was like a guide to how to be a sell out – mixed with some misogyny. but then there’s stuff like the work of Naoki Urasawa, that changed a lot of my ideas on how storytelling and  (via his

the documentaries) even how the production of comics can work. It changed around how I felt about both plotting of stories and the value of the studio system in some comics.

All that said, I’m not really that deep in a lot of my understanding of the behind the scenes stuff in most manga. I’ve never even been to that continent.

What do you have to say about this new comic that William Gibson is writing for IDW? You gonna read it?

Yeah, I’ll certainly check it out. (I know he’s talking about some other possible comics stuff that I’m more excited about tho– shhhh)
