Have you read the Women Write About Comics discussion of Island's last cover (I guess I can't add links to q's) ? Lot of good points. Can't look at the cover of the final issue of Island without thinking "Jesus Christ" anymore.
Yeah, I read it. (the post is here)
It might just be my own blind spots or knowing Dilraj’s work but any blackface implications never occurred to me. Plus maybe knowing that he’s a dark skinned dude drawing a dark skinned woman- maybe Dilraj will correct me but I think he’s a British dude with roots in India. So I take some issue with the talk on that site implying that he’s not black enough to draw whatever skin tone he wants to.
Something that bugged me about that conversation is that none of the women had read the story that Dilraj did that ties directly into the cover. just from a storytelling point of view I was impressed that he treated the cover like a cover shoot and followed up with a story interviewing the character on the cover. Humanizing her I think.
There’s a lot in the post that rings as disconnected from any reality I’ve known like when Stephanie wrote“
The bright, cheerful colors of the quirky clothes and accessories the female figure is wearing also seems ill-suited to such a grave and historical topic as black resistance.
“ – This just rubbed me the wrong way like there’s supposed to be some uniform for having a political stance. Plus, outfit aside, I think it works great to see a more cartoony art style coupled with a grounded tone of story.
In the end I’m all for conversation about the work. So, I appreciate that aspect of it & it’s great that the cover got them talking but I think Dilraj’s work is so much more than they went into.

Goddamnit Brandon, where are my Prophet HCs? It's been two years!
The final trade just came out in January! Did you want it published missing the ending?
but seriously, it’s on the list of stuff I’m talking to Image about

I'm behind on Island but do own them all so maybe this is obvious to those current, but with the series unfortunately wrapping with issue 15, are all the planned stories finished and if not will they continue elsewhere? Or just tell me to go read issues I
Island left a lot of the stories in it unfinished. I’m still talking to Image about it but I certainly want to see all of the stories that can go longer than 100 pages get collected in their own trades. I should know more soon. –Thanks
