Closing The Leadership Gap

LISTEN BELOW

“Everything I do is service to others. I’m all about helping others. I have this saying, “Greatness lies within you.” Every single person is here to be most valuable and I can help you find what is valuable about you.” – Lolly Daskal

Lolly Daskal, “The Leadership Gap” Author sat down and had a meaningful discussion with Farnoosh Torabi on So Money Podcast

What can you do today so that you will be smarter tomorrow? Our guest today is someone The Huffington Post has called “The Most Inspiring Woman in the World” and she is constantly on the pursuit of learning and growing. She asks herself, “What can I do today to be smarter tomorrow?” Well, she reads at least one book per day. Can you believe it? Lolly Daskal is here and her new book The Leadership Gap: What Gets Between You and Your Greatness is making headlines. Inc Magazine calls it the #1 Leadership Book.

Lolly is a highly sought-after executive leadership coach and founder of the company Lead From Within.

I’m always grateful when my guests go deep on the show and Lolly spares no details. She talks about her financial mindset as the child of Holocaust survivors. “Never talk about money,” she was taught. How has that influenced her today as a mother and entrepreneur?

That and so much more, including her take on true leadership today and what are the two factors that equate to confidence.

If you’d like to learn more about Lolly visit www.lollydaskal.com or follow her on Twitter @LollyDaskal.

Farnoosh: One of my favorite quotes from the interview: “I believe there’s an enormous amount of abundance out of there in the  world & if we believe we can make it, we’ll make it.”

Overcoming Your Leadership Gap

click below to listen

Today my special guest is Lolly Daskal, author of The Leadership Gap.

Lolly is the founder of Lead from Within, a successful leadership firm that offers custom-made programs in leadership and organizational development. She is a leadership coach, speaker and has written for a handful of online publications, including Fast Company, Huffington Post and Psychology Today.

We talked about her story, how she found her uniqueness, her own gifts and strengths, how she broke through limiting beliefs from her childhood, her take on sales, and a whole lot more.

We really enjoyed our conversation that we actually have decided to record a follow-up episode, so be sure to click the subscribe button below!

On building a personal brand

“People that help others become thought leaders sometimes don’t think of themselves as a brand.”

“It wasn’t until somebody asked me, ‘Who are you, Lolly, in the world?’ that I realized that I might be too much behind the scenes and not so much as a brand.

Then I created a website. I was like, ‘What am I going to put on my website?’

Then I started to tweet about thing that were happening with my clients, but what should I say about my clients? So I was in this what’s called an abyss. I wasn’t sure how do I take what I do and create a brand from it.”

“I had to find what was different about me, what made me successful, and create the brand from there. That’s how it started, but I never knew I had to do that.”

The nonlinear journey to success

“I got kicked out of a lot of boardrooms. I didn’t get booked that often; I had to go to Europe to spread the message there about heart-based leadership and leading from within. It didn’t matter how many people were in your organization that everybody was a leader and everybody can have a say and that’s how you not only survive, but thrive.

…It wasn’t until people saw the results that people started to trust it. It’s not so much about how I come into an organization; it’s how I leave an organization that matters.

If they make money, if I can take them to the next level, if I can keep their employees engaged in a high level, that’s a win-win situation for them. How I get them there, at this point, they didn’t even care.”

Leading from within

“My unique thing is that lead from within; that every single person, no matter what position they’re in, no matter what business they have, they are a leader. If you’re influencing someone and you’re impacting someone, I believe you are a leader in your life. And that message was something very unique to what I was saying.”

“Lead from within is a very interesting concept because if I tell you that you can be the leader in any situation that you choose to be, listen to the words I used – choose to be. That means leadership is within you, but we don’t always choose it.

I found that people didn’t know what to choose. It’s one thing to tell someone you’re a leader; it’s another thing to know how to show up.”

Removing limiting beliefs that hold you back

“As a psychologist and a student of philosophy, what I have learned is that we are not born with limiting beliefs. We come in thinking we could do anything. If you ever look at a really young child, they do the most miraculous things because they don’t think anything is going to stop them, so they take risks, they walk into walls, they eat dirt – they do everything, right?

And you’re like, “What are you doing?”

There’s nothing telling them they can’t do it and it’s a NO.”

“We know who we are. But what I find is, those negative messages that we have now internalized and we keep projecting all the time, that if we don’t own it, it owns us.”

“Ask yourself, “Is that really true?” Because if it’s not, it’s time to get rid of it, because otherwise, it owns you. “

Lolly’s view on sales

I believe sales is human-to-human connection; I don’t think of it as sales. I don’t think of I am going to sell you something. What I’m going to do is I’m going to bring you something that will impact your life for the better.

Finding Home: Leading From Within

“I grew up in New York, in a small place…”

Lolly Daskal grew up in Brooklyn, NY. One of the biggest most metropolitan cities in the world, and yet to Lolly “it felt like a very small place.” Her life existed within a few city blocks and her community only spoke Yiddish, German and Hungarian. Her family was very religious and she was expected to be married and begin having children by 16.

Lolly grew up very inquisitive, which was not supported in an environment where you were expected to just keep things “they way they are.” When she first moved out of the community, she discovered the power of books and believed for the first time: “Wow!” I can ask any question, do anything, be anyone!”

For the first time – her world felt expansive. While she felt she no longer had a home, she found “sometimes you have to get lost to be found.”

Lolly has been an insatiable student of books, the world and human behavior since. Today, she is a highly-sought business coach and author and her mission is to teach others how to “lead from within.”

SHOW NOTES:

Lolly has read a book a day for 20+ years and attributes much of her success in business to this.

Self discovery isn’t easy. You feel like you’re on a wheel and you’re not sure you are ever going to get out; if it is ever going to get better.

“A game changer for me was reading what Joseph Campbell wrote: ‘In your abyss lies your treasures.’ We have ideas of what we want to be, but life doesn’t unfold that way. If I can remember this quote, than I am okay.”

Her book The Leadership Gap was published this month and shares her rethink system, or 7 leadership archetypes that she’s used with 1,000+ clients.

Example: “R” is for rebel; someone who wants to make an impact in the world, but they need confidence to do it.

The gap is when you don’t have confidence. How do you get confidence? You identify your capabilities and competencies. You get to choose, are you going to be a rebel and choose confidence or imposter and feel inadequate/undeserving?

We all have self doubt because we measure ourselves by everyone else and end up feeling less worthy. Negative internal dialogue is very prominent.

Ways to overcome imposter syndrome (aka feeling undeserving):

At night, think about all the things you did well that day. This will help even out negative messages + change your inner dialogue.

Ask yourself: What did I do today that I can do even better tomorrow? Don’t measure against someone else, measure against yourself

What’s Stopping Leaders From Achieving Greatness

Click below to Listen

As leaders, how aware are we of the obstacles we create for ourselves that impede our ability to achieve our own form of greatness? That’s the question that served as the basis of my conversation with my fellow leadership expert and friend, Lolly Daskal.

Lolly is the president and CEO of Lead From Within, a global consultancy that specializes in leadership and entrepreneurial development.

Lolly is also a prolific writer, not only creating regular content for her award-winning leadership blog, but she also writes a column for Inc.com and Psychology Today, as well as having her work appear in the Harvard Business Review and Fast Company. Although she’s the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, the one that probably best describes Lolly is something The Huffington Post once wrote about her, calling her “The Most Inspiring Woman in The World”.

For our conversation, Lolly and I discuss her new book called “The Leadership Gap: What Gets Between You and Your Greatness”.

In addition to a fascinating discussion on the nature of nature of intuition and why we follow (and should follow) our gut instincts, Lolly shares a number of interesting insights on leadership, including:

By hiding emotions or memories we feel bad about, we hold ourselves back from living our true lives. – @LollyDaskal [Twitter logoShare on Twitter]
In order to achieve our best, sometimes we have to rethink who we are more than what we’re doing. – @LollyDaskal [Twitter logoShare on Twitter]
Our intuition comes from being willing to let go of what we know to let something new to take hold. – @LollyDaskal [Twitter logoShare on Twitter]
Leaders need to spend less time talking and more time watching and listening to those they lead. – @LollyDaskal [Twitter logoShare on Twitter]
How people respond to you is a very telling sign about what kind of a leader you really are. – @LollyDaskal [Twitter logoShare on Twitter]

These are, of course, only a handful of the thought-provoking ideas shared in this episode – in fact, Lolly shares a powerful message near the end of the show, so be sure to keep ears open for that kernel wisdom and insight.

As I mentioned at the end of this episode, I’d love to hear what you think about this episode, as well as what other topics you’d be interested in hearing more about in upcoming episodes of my show. Please share your thoughts and ideas by leaving a comment below or by filling out the contact form on my website.

I’d also appreciate it if you could rate my show on Google Play, Stitcher Radio, or iTunes to help support future episodes of this leadership podcasts.

Closing The Gap Between You And Your Greatness

“What You Don’t Own Owns You” Lolly Daskal

This week’s episode is a crash course in greatness. Lolly Daskal talks about her new book The Leadership Gap and how we can use both our strengths and weaknesses to our favor. Lolly talks about her 30 years of experience that culminated in her creating RETHINK:

The Rebel, driven by confidence; and the Imposter, plagued by self-doubt.

The Explorer, fueled by intuition; and the Exploiter, master of manipulation.

The Truth Teller, embraces candor; and the Deceiver, who creates suspicion.

The Hero, embodies courage; and the Bystander, a coward if there ever were one.

The Inventor, brimming with integrity; and the Destroyer, is morally corrupt.

The Navigator, trusts and is trusted; and the Fixer, endlessly arrogant.

The Knight for whom loyalty is everything; coupled with the Mercenary, who is perpetually self- serving.

We dive into exploring the Rebel archetype and look at the Imposter Syndrome that so many of us struggle with daily. Lolly shares how difficult it is to ask for help and gives us tips and strategies to help us drop the fear and move into our greatness.
