Interview with author Daryl Wood Gerber & New Release
BTS: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I grew up in the Bay Area (not far from San Francisco). After college, I worked as an actress in Los Angeles. I actually had a fun role on Murder, She Wrote acting opposite Angela Lansbury. What a pro. A few years into my career, I started to write television shows and screenplays, hoping to expand my possibilities in the business. I created the format for a popular sitcom, Out of this World. However, when my husband asked if we could move across country for his career, I set aside writing for the screen, and I turned to writing thrillers and mysteries. I took lots of classes and received a lot of rejection along the way. But I never gave up.
BTS: How would you describe your books to readers?
GIRL ON THE RUN is a stand-alone suspense. I am known for my cozy mysteries (The Cookbook Nook Mysteries and The Cheese Shop Mysteries), but I’ve always wanted to publish a suspense novel. GIRL ON THE RUN is the story of a woman suspected of murder, on the run to find the truth. [I posted the blurb below.]
BTS: What are you currently working on?
I’m doing edits on the next Cookbook Nook Mystery #5 titled GRILLING THE SUBJECT and outlining a follow up Cookbook Nook Mystery #6.
BTS: Of the books you’ve written, which one is your favorite and why?
Oh, gosh, I love all my books…I mean I love the characters in my books. That’s like asking me to pick my favorite child! Each has its own texture, own flavor. Right now, GIRL ON THE RUN is my favorite because it’s so new to me and to my readers. I love the pace of a suspense novel.
BTS: What books have most influenced you as a writer?
I remember reading Rebecca and thinking, wow! I loved the emotions in Gone with the Wind. I loved the action in The Bourne Identity. I loved the history in Hawaii. And then I loved the critical information in Stephen King’s On Writing and the writer’s tools provided in The Artist’s Way.
BTS: What do you find to be the most challenging part of writing? And the most rewarding?
Finding the voice is the most challenging and making sure the voice matches the story. Then the most challenging part is to come up with the beginning, middle, and end. Of those three, the “muddy middle” is the hardest. Making sure all the twists and turns make sense. Making sure the rollercoaster ride has enough excitement and fun! The most rewarding part is when a fan tells me that he or she loved the book. That’s my aim: to entertain and amuse and help a reader get lost for a few hours.
BTS: What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?
More mystery, more suspense, and maybe even a women’s fiction or two. But whatever I write will have to be entertaining. I’m not going to hit my readers with dark, dark material. That’s just not me. I don’t like reading it. I know I can’t write it.
BTS: Is there anything you’d like to share with your readers?
I almost didn’t become a writer. Why not? Because my 7th teacher told me I wasn’t any good and I shouldn’t try. Can you imagine dousing a kid’s dreams? I had written a play by then and my schoolmates loved it. I’d tried writing a Nancy Drew mystery, too. That needed work! But the teacher’s words (based on a short story I’d written) cut me to the core and I set aside my pen. I focused on acting, and luckily, I found tremendous success and pleasure doing so. I’m a bit of a ham.
Thanks for the opportunity to share with your readers!! Great questions.

Book 1 & 2 A Josie Rizzo Mystery by J R Pearson book reviews.
She and her furry companion, Petey, set out to start fresh in the food loving town of Greenville. Josie is excited to introduce the readers of her food blog to the town’s delicious creations.
But when a young woman is murdered at a local burger joint, Josie must sacrifice all she has planned to accomplish to prevent a person from her past from being wrongly accused of the woman’s death.
And things start to heat up when the killer sets his sights on Josie.
Will she be able to enjoy Greenville’s belly-rubbing cuisines and begin a new chapter in her life? Or will the killer cut Josie’s dreams short and make sure that basket of onion rings are her last?
My thoughts:
I love this series from the first few pages. JR Pearson is a new to me author. I just happen to see her on FB and we talked for a few and I was given the first two books for an honest review.
I am so glad I did Josie is a wonderful sleuth even when she doesn’t know she is going to be. She can attract some weird situations. Josie is a foodie and works hard on her blog with pictures and write ups of her favorite places and recipes. She wants to get into writing for magazine.
She gets a job with her best friend Brad at a deli after she has moved 30 miles away from her parents house. Little does she know a old friend and neighbor that she hasn’t seen in a while is the owner now that his uncle has retired.
Tony is the new owner of the deli and Josie is shocked to see him after so many years have passed. A woman has been found beaten to death and Tony is the first person they accuse of murder. Everyone suspects him but Josie. She knows he could not have done it. Even though his father was in prison for killing Tony’s mother does’t mean he is a killer in her eyes.
Josie and Tony start becoming close as she helps prove he is innocent. Someone is after Josie for getting to close to the truth and even gets run off the road. Tony protects her but will it be enough?
The characters are great and I enjoyed the new twist of the heroine not falling for the detective in this series. The author has done a great job with this new series. A lot of funny moments really make you fall in love with these characters.
BOOK 2
Small container of pickle spears……$2.99
Hot corned beef sandwich…………….$6.99
Large antipasto platter ………………$10.99
*Green olives included*
One cold dead body……(Prices may vary)
Josie and her best friend, Brad, are next in line at Greenville’s famous pastrami-sandwich-producing hotspot–Danny’s Deli. Their highly anticipated lunch break turns stale when employee Gordy Fitzgerald’s body is found in the freezer.
Word soon surfaces that Gordy had been stabbed shortly before being found–and the weapon is missing. Locals are devastated by the discovery, and the amount of speculation on the killer’s identity is far greater than the holes on a block of Swiss cheese.
Who killed the beloved sandwich wizard?
Josie’s untamed curiosity is determined to answer just that.
Along the way, she has a few tasks at hand: maintaining a blog, coming to terms with her feelings for Tony, and keeping up with the shenanigans of her corgi, Petey.
All this, and finding a killer.
Shouldn’t be too hard. Living in a small town like Greenville, there’s no place anyone can hide.
Not even a murderer…right?
My thoughts:
Josie is at it again. She falls into another murder investigation. Tony is not too happy neither is Brad. Josie and her buddy Brad are waiting in line at Danny’s Deli when Gordy is found murdered in the freezer. The weapon is not found and word spreads quickly. Again, Detective Evans is keeping an eye on Tony Santino but this time he had nothing to do with the murder.
Brad and Josie really get into some funny situations. They visit the old nursing home that Gordy’s mom died at. Was she helped? The grounds keeper tells them to get out and Brad tells her to book it. Another funny moment in the series. Brad and Josie together are a hoot and then Tony and Josie’s feelings are getting stronger.
So many twists make the series wonderful.
We find out in book one that Tony’s father is in prison but we soon learn he is out and keeping an eye on both Tony and Josie. Why? We will have to keep reading the books to find out.
I am looking forward to the next story.
About the author:
J R Pearson has loved reading cozy mysteries for years and was inspired to write her own. Introducing funny characters, yummy foods, cozy small town life, hot detectives, and a stubborn female protagonist. J R Pearson also loves to watch murder mysteries while snuggling on the couch with her family

Guest Post
It’s February 23, 2016, AKA Release Day. My debut novel, Cozy Mystery Death by Diploma, became available today throughout all of cyberspace and beyond. The starring characters in this novel have been around since the late 90’s, when I created them to write a script for a sitcom contest. They were born as an amalgamation of me and all my friends in education (I taught high school English and Drama from 1992-2011), and they flourished with all my teaching adventures. Now they’ve EVOLVED, no kidding, into honest-to-pete, Angela-Lansbury-loving SLEUTHS, solving murders and quoting Shakespeare! Their arduous journey is coming to a head today, Release Day.
Tuesdays are workout days, so here I am at 5 a.m., saying my good-mornings to the fifteen or twenty other crazy people who are up this early to sweat at least three to four days per week. There must be sparks coming from out my ears, no? I’m as antsy as a cat on a horse fence, sure my body is screaming the news: MY BOOK IS OUT! MY BOOK IS OUT! CAN’T YOU SEE HOW HUGE THIS IS??!? I WILL NEVER BE THE SAME! I study their faces, trying to gauge their reactions, but nothing happens. The same grim resignation appears there, that “I’m only here because I have to be” look. No clue as to the import of the day, no idea of the size of the accomplishment. I can’t believe it. So I take a deep breath and jump on the elliptical, ready to sweat like the rest of them.
It starts me thinking, though. When I finished the first draft of this book, I’d burst into tears, overwhelmed by the enormity of the task I’d completed: an entire book. Think about it: how many people do you know who say they want to write a book? They’ve got this great idea for a book, but they never find the time or the wherewithal to do it. Or think about any big thing you’ve done, or any noteworthy event in your life: did you just have a baby? Just finish your dissertation? Just meet your soul mate? It’s so strange to ambulate through an ordinary day when something’s going on that feels so life-changing and significant, and nobody seems to notice.
I guess there’s a lesson in perspective here: there is no neon sign over my head with arrows and flashing psychedelic words saying SEE ME! I DID SOMETHING AWESOME! SOMETHING THAT SHOULD WOW YOU ALL! It’s just another day for the other almost 7-billion souls on this speck of a planet, in this grain of a solar system, on this beach of a galaxy, along this ocean of a universe.
But you know what? That’s okay, because it’s Release Day. I feel awesome.

Heaven Sent by Avelyn Paige review
Bloody…broken…barely surviving…
Danae “Dani” Espinoza is on the run and desperate to escape the demons of her past. Plans to hide out in a sleepy Los Angeles suburb turn into a pipe dream as she is drawn into the secret filled world of the local motorcycle club. Dani soon learns that her secrets and lies are nothing compared to those kept behind the clubhouse doors. Trying to avoid the suspicious Vice President, she must keep a low profile in order to survive. The trouble is he has other ideas.
Bike…babes…and booze…
Tyler “Hero” Tobias has simple needs. Being the Heaven’s Rejects MC Vice President, he has all three at his disposal. But he has his own ghosts that keep him awake at night. When Dani arrives at the clubhouse, he knows he should stay away but there is something about her dark beauty and the mystery that surrounds her that makes him burn. There are secrets in her eyes and lies in her smile and he knows he should put his club first, but Hero’s heart and loyalty are about to be tested.
Can an angel with blood-covered wings and the devil himself resist temptation or will they risk bringing hellfire down on everything that they love?
My thoughts:
This is a new to me author and when I read the blurb for Heaven Sent I thought why not give this a try. Let me tell you this author knows how to write an exciting story. From page one I was taken in and read the whole book through.
Dani runs from her home in Ohio and heads to California. It was the quickest way out of town by bus. As she is traveling she finds a place to rent and the soon to be roommate meets her at the bus station. Ricca and Dani hot it off from the get go.
Dani needs a job but someone who will pay her under the table so no one will know where she is. Ricca works for Red at the bar and encourages Dani to come give it a try. There she runs into Hero a VP of Heaven’s Reject. One quick dance and she is taken in but they depart not knowing who each of them is.
One night someone storms in to kidnap Dani since he can’t get to Ricca. One thing leads to another and the President ‘s wife of the HR finds Dani in a building and takes her back to the clubhouse. Things start getting heated with Hero and you want to turn the pages to find out.
This book is hot, sexy, suspenseful and some laugh out moments. Dani and Hero both have secrets can they move past them and love again?
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series.

Death and the Village
We’ve all heard the realtors’ mantra – location, location, location. For writers, it’s “setting,” and for cozy mystery writers that usually means a small town atmosphere, a village, and a select group of recurring characters, as in Snowflake, Vermont where the Soup Lover’s mysteries take place. And who can forget St. Mary Mead, Miss Marple’s home town? Or Kembleford of the Father Brown stories? Or how about Three Pines in the Louise Penny books? What is it about that pastoral setting that causes a cozy reader to sigh deeply and open the pages of a new book?
But is that the reality of small town life? I recently came across a disturbing study compiled at Ohio State University that stopped me in my tracks — suicide rates among small town adolescents are double those of urban youngsters. They are highest among older men, Native Americans and veterans. Wyoming has the highest suicide rate per capita in the U.S., and following are Alaska, Montana, New Mexico and Utah.
But why? According to this study, isolation and lower incomes are the biggest factors, add to that health problems, unwillingness or fear of asking for help and lack of access to that help. Fifty-five percent of U.S. counties do not have a single psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker!
Whatever happened to small town America? Does it exist? Did it ever exist? Or is it just a vision we yearn for? Yes, we write about murder, murder in quaint villages with simmering secrets and dark motives, but that’s okay. It’s entertainment. It’s not suicide or urban crime or serial killers. Cozy fans want a sense of safety, a sense that justice will be served, and no one left standing will be in pain.
Many readers have told me they wished Snowflake, Vermont really existed. Others have said they want to live there. (I do too!) In a way, I do already. In my head. Snowflake is real to me. I can see the streets, the surrounding mountains, the storefronts and the By the Spoonful Soup Shop. Yes, I do have a soft spot in my heart for that little village. But I have to ask, are we propping up a harmful myth? Is our portrayal of small town America nothing but a lovely fantasy?
I really don’t have any answers. I’m just musing here — juxtaposing real world issues vs. the cozy universes that we as writers create. We are entertainers and we do our best to spin good stories with winning characters and clever plots. We are creating fantasies because our readers want the fantasy, not the drudgery of the real world.
So, I only hope our books do just that — offer delight to our readers, comfort to the lonely, escape for those who need it. Perhaps more people will want to read and dream and maybe someday those idyllic villages will actually take form in reality — small towns filled with compassionate and caring people who really do reach out to their neighbors. And then maybe one more person will get safely through the dark night.
