Excerpt from All the Missing Girls

Be sure to pop back in this weekend for some great deals!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I just started this mystery/suspense today, and it’s kept my attention so far! All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda starts at the end and works its way back to the disappearance/murder of Annaleise, the second girl to go missing from amongst a group of friends, the first of whom disappeared a decade before. It is clear from the beginning that everyone knows more than they have revealed, but they’re not giving up their secrets easily.

Daniel’s message echoed in the silence: “The money’s almost gone. We need to sell the house. Dad won’t sign the papers, though.” A pause. “He’s in bad shape, Nic.”

Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse.

It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched.

The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing.

Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago.

Mystery quotes contest

It’s contest time!

I have just about given away the last of my bookmarks, which were mostly aimed at my YA audience, and I need to design some new ones with more of a mystery/suspense focus.

I am looking for ORIGINAL quotes about mystery books, readers of mysteries, or readers and reading in general. Such as:

Mystery readers don’t die, they…
You can always tell a mystery reader by…
If I’m reading, don’t bother me unless…

If I use your quote on a bookmark, I will send you the full set of bookmarks (probably six different designs) as a prize. So get your creative juices flowing and hit me up with some quotes on my Facebook post!

The trouble with solving murders in a little town like Bald Eagle Falls is that everybody knows about it, and then they expect you to solve their cases too. When Bella brings a new—or rather a cold—case to Erin, she protests that she is not a detective. But Bella really needs her; how could an old woman just have gone missing without anyone following up on it? How could they just accept Ezekiel’s assertion that his wife was fine and she was just off visiting. Eventually, that excuse must have worn out.

Meanwhile, a blast from Erin’s own past—a foster sister Erin would rather not see again—shows up, bringing with her another set of complications.

Excerpt from This Body of Death

[image error]In case you missed it, check out my recent release of Vanishing Teardrops, Book #4 of the Tamara’s Teardrops series.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This is the second week in a row that I’m not using the Amazon synopsis for my spotlight. The Amazon sales copy was pitiful, so I have quoted from Bookbrowse. My teaser this week is from This Body of Death, An Inspector Lynley Novel, by Elizabeth George. It is a police procedural with lots of twists and turns, and I am still trying to figure out how the two disparate timelines are going to connect up.

When Meredith Powell awakened and saw the date on her digital alarm clock, she absorbed four facts in a matter of seconds: It was her twenty-sixth birthday; it was her day off from work; it was the day for which her mum had suggested a gran-spoils-the-only-grandchild adventure; and it was the perfect opportunity for apologizing to her best and oldest friend for a row that had kept them from being best and oldest friends for nearly a year.

Elizabeth George, This Body of Death

On compassionate leave after the murder of his wife, Thomas Lynley is called back to Scotland Yard when the body of a woman is found stabbed and abandoned in an isolated London cemetery. His former team doesn’t trust the leadership of their new department chief, Isabelle Ardery, whose management style seems to rub everyone the wrong way. In fact, Lynley may be the sole person who can see beneath his superior officer’s hard-as-nails exterior to a hidden—and possibly attractive—vulnerability.

While Lynley works in London, his former colleagues Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata follow the murder trail south to the New Forest. There they discover a beautiful and strange place where animals roam free, the long-lost art of thatching is very much alive, and outsiders are not entirely welcome. What they don’t know is that more than one dark secret lurks among the trees, and that their investigation will lead them to an outcome that is both tragic and shocking.

A multilayered jigsaw puzzle of a story skillfully structured to keep readers guessing until the very end, This Body of Death is a magnificent achievement from a writer at the peak of her powers.

And then the worst thing that could possibly happen, did.

Caught in the middle of a missing child investigation where she is the prime suspect, Tamara is in a race against the clock to find out what happened to her baby before it is too late.

Excerpt from The Breach

I hope you had a great Mother’s Day and picked up a lot of great new books to read! Be sure to stop by at the end of the week when I’ll have a round-up of new releases for you!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Here is a thriller that I picked up recently. You wouldn’t guess from the synopsis on Amazon that The Breach by Patrick Lee is science fiction; I have used a description from tor.com down below to give you a better idea! It is a good ride, with some interesting time travel paradox twists and turns and a cliffhanger ending. And you will find a hero who is not your typical good guy.

He stopped

For a moment he could only stare, too disoriented even to blink.

On the valley floor lay the wreck of a Boeing 747.

The Breach, by Patrick Lee

The action starts in the Alaskan wilderness where Chase, newly released from a 15-year prison sentence hikes alone, trying to come to grips with what to do with the rest of his life. A few hours after he hears a thunderous noise coming from a clear sky, he finds a crashed 747 in the middle of nowhere. When he examines the wreakage, he finds systematically executed bodies, including the first lady of the United States. But the first lady lasted long enough to leave a cryptic message that leads Travis to the killers who are torturing the two survivors of the devastation and the discovery of a strange glowing blue ball, which affects Travis in strange ways.

Our hero is too late to save the old man, but, at the nick of time, Chase does some quick shooting of his own and saves Paige, a covert operative, from the excruciating pain her sadistic captor is inflicting. Travis, who must have kept in shape in prison, carries Paige for several miles through the snow to the nearest town, where he is rewarded for his heroism by being shackled, hooded and flown to an equally desolate outpost in Wyoming.

There Travis and the reader begin to learn about the Breach of the title; a secret organization called Tangent set up to protect humanity from the powers the Breach is unleashing; and the immediate threat from the shimmering blue ball.

Excerpt from The Story Keeper

If you’re in Calgary, I hope you will join me for readings by nine local authors (including me) at the Owl’s Nest this Thursday at 7:00. It would be great to see you face to face.

Be sure to check the sidebar/below for current promos! And be sure to check back this weekend, when I’ll have some Mother’s Day deals going on.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Speaking of Mother’s Day, this book would be a good Mother’s Day gift for you or your mom! I just started Lisa Wingate’s The Story Keeper (A Carolina Heirlooms Novel)[image error] and am finding it an intriguing story. In a story within a story, protagonist Jen Gibbs is led by a mysterious manuscript to return to her own roots and acknowledge and explore her past.

And then I noticed it. Another detail that hadn’t been the same yesterday. A brown craft-paper envelope, the crease along its edge sun-washed white as if it had been sitting long near  window. It rested on the corner of my desk, slightly cockeyed.

Lisa Wingate, The Story Keeper

Successful New York editor, Jen Gibbs, is at the top of her game with her new position at Vida House Publishing — until a mysterious manuscript from an old slush pile appears on her desk. Turning the pages, Jen finds herself drawn into the life of Sarra, a mixed-race Melungeon girl trapped by dangerous men in the turn of the century Appalachia. A risky hunch may lead to The Story Keeper‘s hidden origins and its unknown author, but when the trail turns toward the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place Jen thought she’d left behind forever, the price of a blockbuster next book deal may be higher than she’s willing to pay.
