Randy’s Review of June & Justin

This is my sweet hubby’s review of June & Justin, Book #2 in the Between the Cracks series.

Originally blogged at Flamestr’s Thoughts.[image error]

June and Justin did everything to escape from their past but to face and fight their fears.

They had no one but each other. The story begins with their awful family life and traumas that will stick with them their whole life.

Dealing with this dangerous home life, June and Justin try everything to escape, which leads to Justin being on trial for the murder of his father. This leads them into the foster care system, placed with parents who have no idea how to handle their issues. Combine that with an overworked, beaten-down social worker who has seen it all, and far too soon, June and Justin are out on their own, chock full of pre-teen attitude.

Justin is willing to do almost anything to keep June from being part of the real world. He influences her into making some choices which bring heavy consequences. They go through life with an us-against-the-world mentality. They both continue to use their relationship as a crutch. Justin crosses boundaries to protect June, all under the guise of protecting her.

A riveting, fast-moving novel that will keep you on your toes. The action-packed novel never stops.

About June & Justin

[image error]Justin had made a mistake. A big, life-changing mistake.

He already failed June once. He wasn’t there when she needed him, and because of him, their lives will never be the same. June is everything to Justin, and he must be everything to her. He must protect June at all costs. Justin is prepared spend the rest of his life keeping her from getting hurt again.

But it seems they are always falling behind, barely keeping one step ahead of the nightmares.

There is always one more hazard, just around the corner.

Excerpt from Island of Shipwrecks

[image error]Friday was the release of Stirring Up Murder, book #4 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery cozy mystery series! If you’re looking for your next beach read this summer, have a look!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I just finished reading Island of Shipwrecks, book #5 of the YA Fantasy Unwanteds series by Lisa McMann. This is probably not a series that you want to jump into the middle of like I did! While there are enough clues to puzzle out the backstory, you will be missing a lot of the depth of the story and the characters. And it may take a while to figure out that Miss Octavia is an octogator (a cross between an octopus and an alligator) or what a squirrelicorn is (a fighting animal that is a cross between a flying squirrel and a unicorn.)

While billed as “Hunger Games meets Harry Potter,” I’d say the Unwanteds is written for a younger audience than either one, closer to the Kid Lawyer or Artemis Fowler series.

Thinking about how there was no fixing this. Not this time. Because the woman who always fixed things for him was dead. After a while, the pain in his chest grew so large that it began to push its way out in low groans and ugly sobs.

Aaron’s only friend in the entire world was dead.

A risky decision endangers both Artimé and Quill in book five of the New York Times bestselling Unwanteds series, which Kirkus Reviews called “The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.”

Alex and his friends from Artimé are stranded on a newly discovered island after barely surviving a storm that destroys their ship. And it turns out they’re not alone…

Back in Quill, Aaron’s power base grows as he aligns himself with an unlikely ally. Together, the two enact a drastic, risky plan to finally conquer Artimé—a plan that could ultimately leave everyone in both Artimé and Quill in far more danger than Aaron realizes.

Excerpt from A Wanted Man

I hope you enjoyed Father’s Day and Autistic Pride Day! Be sure to come back for a new release this Friday!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I can always rely on Jack Reacher to entertain me! I am reaching A Wanted Man by Lee Child, book #17 in the Jack Reacher series. The interesting thing about this book is that so far, almost all of the Jack Reacher scenes have been in the car. It’s interesting how much tension  you can build with four people stuck in a car together. But then, if you’ve been on a family vacation, you probably already know that! Finding himself in the middle of trouble, as usual, Jack Reacher is on the case.

He kept the smile on his face.

He remained optimistic.

And then finally, after a total of ninety-three minutes on the ramp, a car stopped for him.

Lee Child, A Wanted Man

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, another telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And a hitchhiker with a broken nose. An hour behind them, the FBI descends on an old pumping station where a man was stabbed to death—the knife work professional, the killers nowhere to be seen.

All Jack Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy, in which nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth.

Happy Father’s Day!

[image error]In the Tick of Time is on sale on Kobo for their Father’s Day sale June 14-20.

Do things with lots of legs creep you out? This may not be the book for you…

Matt Malloy, infectious diseases expert for the DOH vector-borne disease division, knew there was something wrong with the Buffalo Head infection cluster as soon as it hit his desk. But knowing it instinctively and proving it were two completely different things, especially when his boss and coworkers already suspected that, battling sleep deprivation, he’d already gone around the bend.

Matt knew that solving the mysteries of the Buffalo Head cluster was a matter of life and death. He just didn’t know that it could be a matter of his life and death.

It could happen to you. Maybe it already has.

In the Tick of Time will leave your skin crawling every time you hike through the woods or long grass, long after you have finished reading it. A well-crafted suspense novel that will take you into the psyche of both the flawed investigator and slightly-deranged perpetrator. You will look at your coworkers differently after this.

And don’t forget that Gluten-Free Murder and Ruby, Between the Cracks are free at the Kobo store for a limited time.

Excerpt from A Banquet of Consequences

[image error][image error]Stirring Up Murder, book #4 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series is being released soon! It is available on preorder now. I have a couple of sales going on in the Kobo store right now:

Gluten-Free Murder and Ruby, Between the Cracks are free for a limited time.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

A Banquet of Consequences is not the first Elizabeth George mystery I have read this year. It is part of the Inspector Lynley series, though I haven’t heard much from Lynley yet! I am not too far into the book yet, and am interested in seeing how the suicide and the investigation end up being connected. Elizabeth George builds unique, well-rounded characters.

“People,” he countered, “need to stay out of my way. I can’t concentrate when they yammer at me. Why don’t they get that? It’s not like I don’t tell them straightaway.”

Elizabeth George, A Banquet of Consequences

The unspoken secrets and buried lies of one family rise to the surface in Elizabeth George’s newest novel of crime, passion, and tragic history. As Inspector Thomas Lynley investigates the London angle of an ever more darkly disturbing case, his partner, Barbara Havers, is looking behind the peaceful façade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire and deceit.

The suicide of William Goldacre is devastating to those left behind who will have to deal with its unintended consequences—could there be a link between the young man’s leap from a Dorset cliff and a horrific poisoning in Cambridge?

After various issues with her department, Barbara Havers is desperate to redeem herself. So when a past encounter gives her a connection to the unsolved Cambridge murder, Barbara begs Thomas Lynley to let her pursue the crime, knowing one mistake could mean the end of her career.

Show me your #catitude

I am working on a spin-off series from my Auntie Clem’s Bakery series and like the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, it features a cat. In book two, Starlight the tuxedo cat is showing some significant “cat attitude” or catitude toward his owner/careperson.

I am looking for some inspiration from you! Show me your pictures, videos, cat memes, and share stories of your cat’s catitude! Is your cat a grumpy cat? Garfield? A sneak thief?

While you can share in the comment space below, if you have videos or gifs to post, the best place to share is probably on my Facebook page or tweet @pdworkmanauthor with #catititude

I look forward to seeing your shares!

Excerpt from Breakdown

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I’ve read a few of Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware series over the past year, and have enjoyed them very much. Breakdown is no exception. I love the mixture of psychology and mystery. Alex Delaware is a great psychologist with a big heart. I’m just about through this one, as all of the pieces are coming together, but I still don’t know what he is going to find out about the missing boy…

Finally, crunching a crouton to dust and dabbing his mouth, Lou said, “Five-year-old boy for you, psychotic mother for me. I say you get the better deal.”

Jonathan Kellerman, Breakdown

Psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware meets beautiful and emotionally fragile TV actress Zelda Chase when called upon to evaluate her five-year-old son, Ovid. Years later, Alex is unexpectedly reunited with Zelda when she is involuntarily committed after a bizarre psychotic episode. Shortly after Zelda’s release, an already sad situation turns tragic when she is discovered dead on the grounds of a palatial Bel Air estate. Having experienced more than enough of L.A.’s dark side to recognize the scent of evil, Alex turns to his friend LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis for help in finding out who ended Zelda’s broken life.

At the same time, Alex is caught up in another quest: the search for Zelda’s missing son. And when other victims vanish from the same upscale neighborhood, worry turns to terror.

As Alex struggles to piece together the brief rise and steep fall of a gorgeous, talented actress, he and Milo unveil shattered dreams, the corruption of a family, and a grotesque betrayal of innocence. With each devastating revelation and damning clue, Alex’s brilliant mind is challenged as never before—and his determination grows to see a killer caged and the truth set free.

Day of Reckoning, by Michelle Lynn

Thirteen-year-old Adam McTaggart and his wise-cracking friends have always assumed that Grayson is just another boring small town on the prairie, but the destruction of a nearby town and disappearance of all of its residents forces them to believe they might also be in danger.

After listening to theories from one of the many unique townspeople, Adam and his friends begin a quest to uncover Grayson’s mysterious past. During their investigation they unlock a strange network of underground tunnels and find objects that seem straight out of science fiction magazines. When they discover the existence of the secret organization controlling everything in Grayson, the group soon understands that their boring small town is much more exciting than they had always believed it to be.
