Read A Time for Mercy, a Grisham Courtroom Drama

Are you looking for some spring and Easter themed books? Be sure to hop like a bunny over to my Easter blog post! And if it isn’t too wintry where you are (we’re in the middle of a “snow squall”) you might like to pick up my newest release, Cold as Ice Cream, the latest book in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am in the midst of my latest read by John Grisham, A Time for Mercy, released in October 2020. It is the third in the Jake Brigance series. It is what Grisham does best, legal suspense and courtroom drama. The characters are well-developed, the legal challenges clear and concise, and a sixteen-year-old’s life is on the line.

…the chores and food and intimidation were nothing compared to the violence.

John Grisham, A Time for Mercy

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

+ About Zachary Goldman Private Investigator Cases 8-10

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F.

Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves four cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.

A case is only unsolvable as long as it remains unsolved.

This set includes:

She Told A Lie

A missing girl. Her confused family and friends don’t know what to think about her disappearance. Zachary Goldman is on the case, and he is determined to find out what happened to Madison Miller and to bring her home safely.

He Never Forgot

When Ben Burton hired Zachary Goldman to help him to find the house he lived in before he was adopted, Zachary had no idea it would turn into a murder case. And Ben is not the only one who remembers what happened.

She Was At Risk

Zachary has done his very best to let go of ex-wife Bridget and relegate their relationship to the past and he knows this is a case that could break him.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Zachary Goldman has become one of my favorite fictional characters. He is so flawed and troubled and loyal and hardworking and, and…I want to be Zach when I grow up!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ The writing is skillful, with a wonderfully complex plot and well-developed characters. Highly recommended!

+ Praise for the Series

—I want to give more than five stars!! It’s like she pulled this out of a newspaper and personalized it!! Another nail biter to the end!!

—I read it almost straight through, but did have to sleep in there somewhere. I’ve been reading it this morning also for 3 hours straight. It is really an amazing book … As a clinical psychologist, this book was more interesting to me than many things that I read. I certainly will be looking for more books by this outstanding author.

—I purchased this book for vacation, but it didn’t get that far. I started reading and I seriously couldn’t put it down and finished it before we left.

—Wow, this story is stunning in more ways than one. The research alone had to take such a long time to make this story so real and compelling. My heart was breaking some of the time and then I was crying because of good things. I loved the story and really think this lady is one of the best authors I’ve ever had the privilege of reading!

—Zachary is not your normal, everyday detective, but because of his mental health issues he seems to have an extra sense in sorting out the reasons behind the crimes he is investigating … Ms Workman has again created characters with depth, feeling and realism… I am really looking forward to the next installment as Ms Workman has yet to disappoint me.

Springing into Easter Reads

After some of the polar weather we experienced during February, the warmer weather in March has been very pleasant. And while Daylight Savings Time has set us back an hour, the days are definitely getting longer and the dawn earlier; where I live, anyway. I know my readers are from all over the world, but I’m sure you’re still fascinated with the changing seasons here! The weather is a very important topic of discussion in places where there is a wide variation in weather from day to day and week to week. (And sometimes minute to minute!)

All of which is to say: I am very glad for the spring! While we are not really past the danger of snow until late May, hopefully the four foot high piles of snow are behind us and we have nothing worse than spring flurries in the next couple of months.

As well as the warmer weather and longer days, spring brings with it green grass, flowers (eventually…), baby animals, and Easter. So, how about some Easter and spring themed books?

Although I have built up my repertoire of Christmas/winter themed books, I don’t have much out yet that takes place around Easter. But I do have one on preorder with an Easter/Ostara/Equinox theme. Magic Ain’t a Game is book #11 in the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series but can be read as a stand alone mystery.

Spring equinox was supposed to be a fun time in Black Sands.

The magical Spring Games are being held in town, with all kinds of new talent and tourists pouring money into the economy. Of course, Reg wasn’t invited to participate, but she figured she’d have a good time watching the entertainment, learning more about how magic works outside of fairy tales, and maybe making some coin with psychic predictions for the tourists.

But instead of the promised state of balance the equinox was supposed to bring, a power shift within the community has disrupted everything, Reg is under investigation for magical crimes, and her footing in Black Sands is more precarious than ever.

“Tell me again how this was all supposed to be fun?”

Hosted by elderly socialite Vivian Van Vorst at her oceanfront estate, it’s a swanky event where the eggs are as likely to contain savings bonds as jelly beans. The victim is Vivian’s grandson, and all is not well at Pine Point. Vivian has been skipping lunch dates, and her charitable donations have abruptly stopped. Is she going senile? Or are her heirs a little too anxious to take over her estate? Amateur sleuth (and ace baker) Claire Andersen is back! Winter melts to spring in scenic Galway, Maryland, uncovering blooming friendships new and old, a shyly budding romance, the rotten stench of organized crime, and family drama more garish than Claire’s emerging blood lilies.

Settling in just fine to her new Appalachian digs (and getting the hang of this whole proprietress of a B&B thing, too!), NYC native Claire Andersen is living a cozy small town fairy tale. There are quirky local characters and adorable little shops, not to mention a kitchen full of mouth-watering baked goodies. She’s a veritable June Cleaver—if Leave It to Beaver were nestled in the mountains and June were a recently retired empty nester, that is.

There’s just one problem. Claire can hardly say “Gee, golly” before her newly-acquainted and much-beloved neighbor winds up murdered in cold blood, right before Galway’s annual Easter parade. Hot off the heels of her last murder, Claire can’t help but get involved (much to the chagrin of the well-meaning albeit bumbling town sheriff). She can hardly help herself, after all. The murder did take place right next door… and the victim’s family is staying in her B&B… Ever the hostess, poking around is the least she could do.

Bailey King’s in New York wrapping up a six-week shoot on her first cable TV show, Bailey’s Amish Sweets, when she gets a call from her Ohio town’s resident busybody. With Easter around the corner, Bailey’s been recruited to create a giant toffee bunny for the weeklong springtime festival that will also feature live white rabbits. But back home in Harvest, death becomes the main attraction when Stephen Raber keels over from an apparent heart attack—with Bailey and Raber’s pet bunny as witnesses.
.
Except it wasn’t Raber’s heart that suddenly gave out—a lethal dose of lily of the valley was mixed into a tasty piece of toffee. Who’d want to poison a jovial rabbit farmer who reminded Bailey of an Amish Santa Claus? To solve the murder, she and her sheriff deputy boyfriend Aiden must uncover a twenty-year-old secret. A Longmire Mystery, Death Without Company

Cold as Ice Cream, #13 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series went live this past weekend. If you did not preorder it or get a chance to buy it yet, head on over to get a copy! It’s fizzy, it’s fun, it’s… murder.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am most of the way through Death Without Company, which is book #2 in Craig Johnson’s Longmire Mysteries series. I was not aware before I started it, but this series is the basis for a Netflix series called Longmire. I just checked, and it’s available on the Canadian version of Netflix as well as the US.

Craig Johnson takes you on a picturesque journey through Wyoming in a slow-burn mystery surrounding the death of a Basque woman in a nursing home. The former sheriff believes that her death was murder and puts Sheriff Walt Longmire onto it (rather insistently.) And of course he turns out to be right, or there wouldn’t be much of a story to tell.

If you like your mysteries fast-moving and dark, this is not the series for you, but if you enjoy the journey and meeting people along the way, you will enjoy this one.

He took a sip of his coffee and nodded along with me. “It is not like women are any fun to be around, that they are soft, that they smell good, or that they…”

Craig Johnson, Death Without Company

Johnson takes us back to the rugged landscape of Absaroka County, Wyoming, for Death Without Company. When Mari Baroja is found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living, Sheriff Longmire is drawn into an investigation that reaches fifty years into the mysterious woman’s dramatic Basque past. Aided by his friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and newcomer Santiago Saizarbitoria, Sheriff Longmire must connect the specter of the past to the present to find the killer among them.

It’s a CO2 cook-off! Chef Kirschoff and Vic’s friends from the Alaskan cruise are back for a carbonation contest, with Erin and Vic acting as two of the judges. It’s fizzy, it’s fun, what could possibly go wrong?

Apparently, someone did not get the memo. At first, when Beryl Batcombe is found dead in the restaurant’s cold room, everyone assumes it was a terrible accident. But as Erin and Vic are drawn into the mystery, it becomes obvious that this was not an innocent mistake.

Like baking mysteries? Cats, dogs, and other pets? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings readers back to small town Bald Eagle Falls for another culinary cozy mystery to be solved by gluten-free baker Erin Price and her friends.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  I love this series! This time Erin and Vic are reunited with friends they made on a recent Alaskan cruise. When Chef Kirschoff asks them to judge a culinary contest, they have no idea it will turn deadly. Many secrets will be unearthed before the killer is found. The plot is as twisty as a country road and the characters are well-developed and believable.

Spring, 1921. Lady Eleanor Swift, explorer extraordinaire and accidental sleuth, hasn’t had a vacation since she arrived in England a year ago. Being an amateur detective can be a rather tiring business and she is determined to escape any more murder and mysteries. So she books into the Grand Hotel in the fashionable resort of Brighton for some fresh air, fish and chips and, of course, a dip in the ocean.

Eleanor is enjoying her view of the waves and trying to find her bathing suit when calamity strikes: a guest has been found dead at her beautiful hotel. The distraught manager, who can’t afford a scandal, asks Eleanor to solve the case as swiftly as possible. Thank goodness she has her partner in crime – Gladstone the bulldog – to help her sniff out the dastardly culprit.

But when Eleanor enters the dead man’s room, she receives a shock big enough to make her forget even the finest ice cream sundae. The body is that of her husband, who supposedly died six years ago on the other side of the world. Has he been alive all these years? Why does he have a copy of their wedding photograph with a cryptic message written on the back? If Eleanor can keep herself safe long enough to find her husband’s killer, she might discover that everything is not quite as it seems beside the seaside…

It is the week before Halloween and Theodosia Browning, proprietor of the Indigo Tea Shop, and her tea sommelier, Drayton, are ghosting through the dusk of a cool Charleston evening on their way to the old Bouchard Mansion. Known as the Gray Ghost, this dilapidated place was recently bequeathed to the Heritage Society, and tonight heralds the grand opening of their literary and historical themed haunted house.

Though Timothy Neville, the patriarch of the Heritage Society, is not thrilled with the fund-raising idea, it is the perfect venue for his grandniece, Willow French, to sign copies of her new book, Carolina Crimes & Creepers.

But amid a parade of characters dressed as Edgar Allan Poe, Lady Macbeth, and the Headless Horseman, Willow’s body is suddenly tossed from the third-floor tower room and left to dangle at the end of a rope. Police come screaming in and Theodosia’s boyfriend, Detective Pete Riley, is sent to Willow’s apartment to investigate. But minutes later, he is shot and wounded by a shadowy intruder.

Wanted: Cat mum to manage a yarn store, corral two curious cats, all the while being tangled up in murderous mayhem and mystery.

A smart woman would dump her cheating ex, move from the city, and give herself a chance for a well-deserved do-over. A smarter woman—smarter than me, anyway—wouldn’t jump out of that same frying pan and return to Cape Discovery, a seaside village where her family is the nuttiest of all the nut-ball residents.

I’m a former high school counsellor, middle-child peacemaker, and current curator of lots of squishy/fuzzy goodness at my granddad’s little yarn store. Temporary assistant. Until I decide what to do with the rest my life. There’s only one knotty problem to untangle first. The knife sticking out of the most unpopular man in town, and the police detective trying to pin the murder on the donkey—otherwise known as my younger brother. With a pair mischievous cats determined to be underfoot and a craft group of Serial Knitters and Happy Hookers wanting the inside scoop, a girl could lose her mind. And if the killer has their way, maybe even my life…

Tessa Wakefield has her hands full juggling a cozy craft store, her crazy family, and two men who’d rather poke out their eyes than describe themselves as cute. Which they totally are. Cute, charismatic, and occasionally on her mind when she’s not stumbling over dead bodies and using her newfound sleuthing skills to track down murderers. Lucky she’s an excellent multi-tasker because digging beneath Cape Discovery’s surface can unearth secrets that kill.

Get your thrills with Hush

Did you have a great International Women’s Day last week? If you didn’t get your fill of books, be sure to pop over to my blog post to pick up a few more books featuring women from other cultures and countries.

And don’t forget about my upcoming release this weekend! Cold as Ice Cream, book #13 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series will be out this Friday, and I will have a sampling of other new releases in my blog post as well. Check out my social media channels for a video of me doing a reading from Cold as Ice Cream. Cold as Ice Cream and my other books can be read as standalone mysteries.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I was afraid when I looked at my recent blog posts that I was featuring a James Patterson book two weeks in a row. Close, but not quite! I featured James Patterson’s Lost two weeks ago, and this week, it is Hush, book number four in the Harriet Blue series. I haven’t previously read any of the books in this series, I don’t think, so you can definitely read it as a standalone and understand all of what is going on. Hush is set in Australia, with an Australian narrator for the audiobook. Harriet Blue is a tough female cop who doesn’t just cross the line in her investigations, she bulldozes right through any policy or law that stands in her way.

In the opening of the book she is, in fact, in prison for her actions in the previous book in the series. I won’t give too much away because I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment.

Lots of action, good characters who have obviously developed over the last few books and have a deep history with each other. Harriet Blue is innovative, working on not only the disappearance of the Police Commissioner’s daughter and granddaughter, but also the murder of a doctor at the prison.

I was brought to the door of the interview room, but when I saw who was inside I turned and tried to walk away.

“Nope!”

James Patterson, Hush

Top cop, devoted sister, and now Inmate 3329: even prison bars won’t stop Harriet Blue from seeking justice for the murder of her brother.

Prison is a dangerous place for a former cop — as Harriet Blue is learning on a daily basis.

So, following a fight for her life and a prison-wide lockdown, the last person she wants to see is Deputy Police Commissioner Joe Woods. The man who put her inside.

But Woods is not there to gloat. His daughter Tonya and her two-year-old child have gone missing.

He’s ready to offer Harriet a deal: find his family to buy her freedom . . .

Masie Dobbs investigates the MIA in Pardonable Lies

If you didn’t get a chance to pick up a few freebies this weekend, you might still be able to get some of them. Check out She Was At Risk and others.

Or maybe you would be interested in one of the books that I gathered together in my International Women’s Day blog. I’ve got a good collection of books about women from other cultures and countries.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I just finished Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear. I’ve read a number of books in the Maisie Dobbs series, and they are quite interesting. The audiobook I listened to (narrated by the author) had an interview with Winspear at the end of it and it was quite interesting to listen to her speak about the way that the Maisie Dobbs character and series came about.

Maisie Dobbs is a strong female lead, a psychologist and private investigator in post-WWI London. You learn in the first couple of books how she got her start as a private investigator, but there is enough backstory in this volume that you can read it alone.

“Yes. I promised to find someone who is dead.” He turned to face Maisie directly for the first time. “I am duty bound to search for him…”

Jacqueline Winspear, Pardonable Lies

In the third novel of this bestselling series, London investigator Maisie Dobbs faces grave danger as she returns to the site of her most painful WWI memories to resolve the mystery of a pilot’s death.

A deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. In accepting the assignment, Maisie finds her spiritual strength tested, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission also brings her together once again with her college friend Priscilla Evernden, who served in France and who lost three brothers to the war—one of whom, it turns out, had an intriguing connection to the missing Ralph Lawton.

Read for International Women’s Day

March 8 is International Women’s Day. So what’s that all about? I have previously written about International Women’s Day, and you can find that blog post here.

The theme for IWD this year is #choosetochallenge:

A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.

We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.

internationalwomensday.com

It’s been a tough year for women around the world. Facing illness, suddenly becoming caregivers for parents or other loved ones, working from home, having children at home remote learning or homeschooling. We didn’t foresee lengthy quarantines and limits on our social activities and communication. We didn’t know all of the people that we were going to lose. Virtual hugs go out to all of you.

I’ve seen a couple of graphics this week celebrating women’s achievements in the world.

You can find out more about IWD and what you can do to celebrate and to advance the cause of equality on these pages:

And how about reading about women? Books are a great way to expand your world and your perspective, even when travel and social opportunities are limited.

I have asked around for female protagonists from other cultures or countries, and here are a few books to consider. You can also check out my previous recommendations.

If you enjoyed watching Rosemary and Thyme – the TV show where two gardeners dig up a dead body in every episode – you’ll love reading about Emily and Maggie, two quirky veterinarians, who travel around Australia treating animals and stumbling over unwelcome corpses.

When Emily and Maggie arrive at Kangaroo Downs to officiate at the opening of its new race-track, they expect to find the usual friendly ambiance characteristic of all small country towns – not the Chief Steward, their very first client, seated behind an ‘engaged’ sign in the local Diner’s restroom – deader than last week’s news.

Not everyone is happy about the new race-track in Kangaroo Downs. Unexplained accidents have been happening at the track. Like workmen falling off sabotaged ladders, the starting gates malfunctioning, an administrator getting electrocuted as he tested the two-way radio in the stewards’ room, broken glass found scattered on the track and the caretaker’s tractor up and disappearing overnight.

With a deranged murderer on the loose, all Emily and Maggie want to do is complete their assignment and hit the road again. That is – until Emily discovers her car stripped of its wheels and CANCELLED written in red paint on the windshield. Angrier than a couple of bees stuck in a vegemite jar, both Emily and Maggie are determined to unearth the identity of the saboteur.
