James Patterson’s Lost will keep you enthralled

I hope you picked up some of the Chills and Thrills listed in last week’s blog post. And thank you again to all of the authors and readers who participated in the Facebook event. We had a lot of fun.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week, I am reading Lost, by James Patterson and James O Born. It is a great thriller that revolves around international human trafficking and is set in Miami, Florida.

Take the compassion of James Patterson’s Michael Bennett, a New York cop with ten adopted children, mixed together with the failed football career of David Baldacci’s Amos Decker, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Detective Tom Moon.

I gathered everyone together. Joseph looked at me with big brown eyes and said, “What are we doing?”

I smiled and said, “We’re making a break for it.”

James Patterson, Lost

As you would expect, James Patterson does not let you get comfortable. The action is always pushing the story along, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

The city of Miami is Detective Tom Moon’s back yard. He’s always kept it local, attending University of Miami on a football scholarship, and, as a Miami PD officer, protecting the city’s most vulnerable. Now, as the new leader of an FBI task force called “Operation Guardian,” it’s his mission to combat international crime. Moon’s investigative team discovers that the opportunistic “Blood Brothers”—Russian nationals Roman and Emile Rostoff—have evaded authorities while building a vast, powerful, and deadly crime syndicate throughout Europe and metropolitan Miami. Moon played offense for U of M, but he’s on the other side of the field this time. And as the Rostoffs zero in on a target dear to Tom, they’re not playing by anyone’s rules.

Vanna had a good life. She had her challenges—like her mother’s high expectations of her—but all in all, she had a job she enjoyed, a fun hobby and friends. She didn’t need any complications.

But that all changed shortly after trying to break things off with Tino. The phone calls with no one on the other end. Anonymous gifts. Someone moving things around in her bedroom.

A restraining order changed nothing. If anything, it caused things to escalate. If Vanna wants her life back, she will have to take things into her own hands.

How do you get your multiple personalities to stop killing people?
Kimmy is trying to return to who she was at thirteen years old; who she was before she was kidnapped and traumatized by one of her mother’s many boyfriends.

But Kimmy doesn’t realize that her personalities, like Matryoshka dolls, were nested inside her years before the kidnapping.

In her teens, Kimmy was seeing a therapist before the therapist broke her confidence and exposed Kimmy’s life story in a book. One of the dolls inside her, Patty-Cake, dealt with that betrayal quite efficiently.

At age thirty-one, Kimberley Jean Tanner, with Patty-Cake’s help, walked into a Nursing Home and started shooting. Her first shot killed her Father and the Father of the child taken from her sixteen years ago. But then, it wasn’t Patty-Cake’s first murder.

When Garnet McGee returns to her small Vermont hometown for the holidays, she vows to solve the mystery of the murder which shattered her life ten years ago.

Then she dies.

After she’s resuscitated, she starts hearing voices, seeing visions and experiencing strange sensations. Are these merely symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and an over-active imagination, or is she getting messages from a paranormal presence?

Garnet has always prided herself on being logical and rational, but trying to catch a killer without embracing her shadow self is getting increasingly difficult. And dangerous, because in a town full of secrets, it seems like everybody has a motive for murder.

Visit death row with John Grisham in The Guardians

Did you have a chance to pick up my new release, She Was At Risk, book #10 in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series yet? Check out She Was At Risk and more new releases.

Be sure to come back this weekend for my February Chills and Thrills event on Facebook! Chat with authors and get a chance to win books and swag.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I haven’t been enamored with some of John Grisham’s releases, but The Guardians, a legal suspense novel released in 2019 hits all of the right notes for me. It is not fast-paced, but definitely holds my interest as public defender-turned-priest-turned-innocence lawyer Cullen Post works a case to get a death-row inmates’ conviction overturned. He is working on several cases at the same time, so you get to hear a number of stories about the type of people who may end up in prison or on death row even though they are innocent.

Duke Russell is not guilty of the unspeakable crimes for which he was convicted; nonetheless, he is scheduled to be executed for them in one hour and forty-four minutes.

John Grisham, The Guardians

In the small Florida town of Seabrook, a young lawyer named Keith Russo was shot dead at his desk as he worked late one night. The killer left no clues. There were no witnesses, no one with a motive. But the police soon came to suspect Quincy Miller, a young black man who was once a client of Russo’s.

Quincy was tried, convicted, and sent to prison for life. For twenty-two years he languished in prison, maintaining his innocence. But no one was listening. He had no lawyer, no advocate on the outside. In desperation, he writes a letter to Guardian Ministries, a small nonprofit run by Cullen Post, a lawyer who is also an Episcopal minister.

Guardian accepts only a few innocence cases at a time. Cullen Post travels the country fighting wrongful convictions and taking on clients forgotten by the system. With Quincy Miller, though, he gets far more than he bargained for. Powerful, ruthless people murdered Keith Russo, and they do not want Quincy Miller exonerated.

They killed one lawyer twenty-two years ago, and they will kill another without a second thought.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Whenever I pick up a book by P. D. Workman I cannot put it down until I have finished the very last sentence. This story was no exception. I love this series!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ When Zachary is asked to follow his ex-wife, he knows it could turn out badly…he has no idea how complex it will become. The delightfully twisty plot, complex characters and story-telling magic make the pages practically turn themselves. You won’t want to put this one down!

A Fugitive in Amish Country: Outsider

I hope you had a Happy Valentine’s Day and picked up a few new mysteries from my For the Love of Families post this weekend. If not, hop on over and see what you can find!

If you happen to be in Texas, cuddling up to a fire with a book might be your best bet right now! Those of us who have been experiencing -40 temperatures might have a chuckle at your unexpected wintry weather, but of course poor road conditions and power outs and no central heating are no laughing matter. Stay safe!

And be sure to come back on Friday for a stack of new releases!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

In today’s book, Outsider by Linda Castillo, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is snowbound in Amish country in Ohio, along with a fugitive who happens to be an old friend. While she would like to think that Gina is blameless in the situation she finds herself in, Kate knows that her friend is keeping things from her and that she cannot keep Gina’s presence from the men who are looking for her for long.

I always enjoy Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder series. They are warm and homey, with a sharp edge of suspense to keep you from getting too comfortable. Who knew that Amish suspense would be such a great mashup?

He saw blue-tinged lips set into a face that was deathly pale. She wore a scarf at the collar of her coat. A single leather glove on her right hand. The other was bare and covered with blood. Her skin was cold to the touch and for a terrible moment he thought she was dead. Frozen to death.

Linda Castillo, Outsider

While enjoying a sleigh ride with his children, Amish widower Adam Lengacher discovers a car stuck in a snowdrift and an unconscious woman inside. He calls upon Chief of Police Kate Burkholder for help, and she is surprised to recognize the driver: fellow cop and her former friend, Gina Colorosa.

Years before, Kate and Gina were best friends at the police academy and patrol officers in Columbus, but time and distance have taken them down two very different paths. Now, Gina reveals a shocking story of betrayal and revenge that has forced her to run for her life. She’s desperate for protection, and the only person she can trust is Kate—but can Kate trust her? Or will Gina’s dark past put them all in danger?

As a blizzard bears down on Painters Mill, Kate helps Gina go into hiding on Adam’s farm. While the tough-skinned Gina struggles to adjust to the Amish lifestyle, Kate and state agent John Tomasetti delve into the incident that caused Gina to flee. But as Kate gets closer to the truth, a killer lies in wait. When violence strikes, she must confront a devastating truth that changes everything she thought she knew not only about friendship, but the institution to which she’s devoted her life.

For the Love of Families

As you probably know, I don’t do romantic themes for Valentine’s Day. I have picked a number of different themes such as friendship and aromantic books in the past.

This year, I have decided to go with family love as a theme. I set out looking for suspenseful plots hinging on love for a sibling, parent, or other close family figure of the protagonist.

I have selected three of my books to feature:

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-4f28868 .ugb-img{width:640px;height:auto !important}}She Was At Risk

Zachary has done his very best to let go of ex-wife Bridget and relegate their relationship to the past. So when her current partner comes to him for help, he is understandably hesitant to help.

But Gordon has always been a stand-up guy and done right by Zachary, so he reluctantly lets himself be talked once more into helping Bridget and Gordon. Zachary struggles with obsessions and self-doubt at the best of times, and this is a case that could break him.

His investigations lead him from one dark revelation to another until Zachary has no idea how he’s going to find his way back into the light.

The case is cold, three decades ago. Heather never saw her attacker’s face, as he was wearing a mask. At the time, the police did everything they could, but there have been new advancements in technology and Zachary hopes to turn up something he can use to solve the case.

Somehow, he needs to find a way to finally bring Heather some peace, even when it means dealing with his own painful memories.

For the past fourteen years, Edgehill’s resident secret witch, Amber Blackwood, has been haunted by her parents’ deaths. The whole town knows about the tragedy, but the details remain a mystery even to Amber. From her tiny studio apartment above her shop, The Quirky Whisker, Amber can see her partially rebuilt old house out on the edge of town. Although she now has a good life—delighting children with her magically infused toys, concocting healing tinctures for Edgehill’s residents, doting on her cats, Tom and Alley, and sitting on the committee for the town’s annual Here and Meow Festival—she feels stuck in the past.

Amber suspects the fire that killed her parents was set deliberately by a witch from the cursed Penhallow clan, from whom no one has heard even a whisper since the night her parents died. The clan’s sudden disappearance is no coincidence to Amber, but her aunt Gretchen refuses to believe there’s a connection and urges Amber to stop looking for someone to blame. So Amber is shocked when Aunt Gretchen shows up unexpectedly, claiming the Penhallows have resurfaced and that one of them is heading for Edgehill with Amber in his sights.

Don’t get comfortable with The Whisper Man

I hope you were able to pick up some freebies for your pile this weekend! Some of them may still be available if you check out my blog post.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week I am reading The Whisper Man by Alex North, and it is a chilling read. If you like that unsettling feeling that you might have left your door unlocked and there is someone out there… this should be your next read.

Good character development. The timeline is a little confusing to start out with, but it works out. Might not be the best bedtime reading…

He stepped silently out from the bushes behind the boy, and then whispered his name.

Alex North, The Whisper Man

After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.

But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed “The Whisper Man,” for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.

Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter’s crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.

And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window…

P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn't want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of...lol). I can't wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters.

—Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.

—This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat. I needed a light read, and this fit the bill perfectly. Recommended.

—This book actually surprised me. I knew that a psychic cat would be entertaining. I just didn’t expect it to be this good. You really do get wrapped up in the people and story. It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat. I love the characters. Wish I had some friends like them. And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

—Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book.

Kenzie Kirsch needs a vacation from the dead bodies in the Medical

Examiner’s Office, so she arranges for a Thanksgiving resort vacation.
