Parks Pat Mysteries
Looking for a police procedural set in picturesque Canada? Let Award-winning and Bestselling Author P.D. Workman take you her favourite Calgary parks, as Métis detective Margie Patenaude investigates a murder in this fast-paced new series.
Detective “Parks” Pat — Margie Patenaude — is a new Calgary homicide detective. Being Métis and a single mom, she has a few things on her plate. Working on a spate of murders in Calgary and area parks earns Margie her nickname.
These short mysteries are just right for those days when you could use a break from your busy life. Take a walk in a Calgary park with Parks Pat.
Out With the SunsetThere’s nothing like jumping straight into the deep end.Margie Patenaude is new in town and wasn’t expecting to get called to a murder scene on her daughter’s first day of school.
It’s an ugly murder in a beautiful setting. How can Calgary’s park-goers feel safe with a murderer still on the streets—or pathways? Margie and the team are on the case while at the same time she and her daughter try to acclimatize to the new city.
If she wants her coworkers to believe that she’s not just a ‘diversity hire,’ she needs to show them what she’s made of and track this killer down.
Long Climb to the TopSolving this case is going to be a long climbDetective Pat is called out to another park homicide scene with disturbing similarities to the Fish Creek murder. Digging more deeply into the evidence reveals something even more worrisome. If her instincts are right, this case may hit a little too close to home.
Is she just imagining the connections? Or could her family be in real danger?
The clock is ticking as Detective Pat homes in on a killer.
Dark Water Under the BridgeParks Pat could be in deep water on this case!Detective “Parks” Pat has made a name for herself in solving the Fish Creek and Glenbow Ranch murders, so she is the one they call when a body turns up in Ralph Klein Park. She would be happy for the confidence placed in her if it weren’t for the fact that the body is in the water.
Detective Pat hates the water. She’ll need to get over that if she is going to be able to investigate this case properly. Preferably before the rest of the department figures out her weakness. There is a killer out there to be caught. Somehow she’ll have to get past her block to find him.

Personal Power in Fiction

One of the themes that runs through the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series (and probably through most of my books, to tell the truth) is that of personal power. What does Reg (or another character) do when faced with an insurmountable obstacle? In Reg’s case, being a paranormal setting, it may be something as big as a magical being intent on taking over the world. That’s a pretty big obstacle. But in other series, it may also be Chloe’s struggle with homelessness and a traumatic history. Or Renata’s ongoing battle with mito and paranoid schizophrenia.
Like Reg, many of my characters struggle with marginalization, past traumas, finding a place in the community, and knowing who to trust. Reg has had to face some of the challenges in the first 12 books of the series by herself, digging down deep inside herself to find a solution to her problem within herself. But many times, she needs to call on others for help. It is only by combining her power with the knowledge and gifts of others that she is able to overcome what seemed like an impossible situation.
So, let’s talk about some books that include women protagonists accessing their power in the face of opposition!

Spring equinox was supposed to be a fun time in Black Sands.
The magical Spring Games are being held in town, with all kinds of new talent and tourists pouring money into the economy. Of course, Reg wasn’t invited to participate, but she figured she’d have a good time watching the entertainment, learning more about how magic works outside of fairy tales, and maybe making some coin with psychic predictions for the tourists.
But instead of the promised state of balance the equinox was supposed to bring, a power shift within the community has disrupted everything, Reg is under investigation for magical crimes, and her footing in Black Sands is more precarious than ever.
“Tell me again how this was all supposed to be fun?”

Chloe had always been the perfect daughter. Diligent, obedient, good at caring for the other children when Mom wasn’t home. She always worked hard and did everything she was asked.
But she couldn’t please her mother and the parade of stepfathers. It seemed like the harder she tried, the worse the abuse got.

Chloe shrugged. Yes. They were done. Because she had found the dog and John wouldn’t have it in his house. She waited to see if he would change his mind, having discovered the line that she would not cross. It was just a dog. And she would keep it out of his way. John could have everything else he wanted and the apartment was big enough for all three of them.
John’s face grew dark. Flushed red, hard as flint. An ugly, brutal scowl.

What would you do if your child was taken?

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.
But when the Eastwood sisters―James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna―join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote―and perhaps not even to live―the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.
There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.

She’s not a karate expert.

Can she stop the killer before they strike again?

Cas Russell is good at math. Scary good. The vector calculus blazing through her head lets her smash through armed men twice her size and dodge every bullet in a gunfight, and she’ll take any job for the right price.
As far as Cas knows, she’s the only person around with a superpower…until she discovers someone with a power even more dangerous than her own. Someone who can reach directly into people’s minds and twist their brains into Moebius strips. Someone intent on becoming the world’s puppet master.
Cas should run, like she usually does, but for once she’s involved. There’s only one problem…
She doesn’t know which of her thoughts are her own anymore.

Experience The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Do you enjoy a little Christmas in July? Check out these great holiday reads! Stretch out on your hammock and dive back into the holiday season with these picks.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
This week’s book is not one of my usual genres, but is a little book that lives somewhere at the nexus of Winnie the Pooh, Narnia, and Buddha. Read it as a children’s book, explore the purpose of life, meditate daily on your impact on others. It’s one of those gems that is bound to live long on the shelf beside your bed or your favorite chair.
I first heard a quote from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy at church. It was this: “Always remember you matter, you’re important and you are loved, and you bring to this world things no one else can.”
It moved me and I immediately jotted down the name of the book to look it up and to see what it was all about. I looked at some of the quotes on Goodreads. I shared the title with my mom. All of the copies at my library had long hold lines, but the hold for the audiobook wasn’t too bad, so I borrowed that. Read by the author, Mackesy describes the scenes because the pictures are just as important to him as the words. It is a beautiful book whether you read it in print or listen to him read it.
Here’s another quote before I get to my actual teaser:
‘If at first you don’t succeed, have some cake.’
‘I see. Does it work?’
‘Every time.’
Okay, and on to my official teaser for this little gem:
“I’m so small,” said the mole.
Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
“Yes,” said the boy, “but you make a huge difference”

“ The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is not only a thought-provoking, discussion-worthy story, the book itself is an object of art.”- Elizabeth Egan, The New York Times
From British illustrator, artist, and author Charlie Mackesy comes a journey for all ages that explores life’s universal lessons, featuring 100 color and black-and-white drawings.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” asked the mole.
“Kind,” said the boy.
Charlie Mackesy offers inspiration and hope in uncertain times in this beautiful book, following the tale of a curious boy, a greedy mole, a wary fox and a wise horse who find themselves together in sometimes difficult terrain, sharing their greatest fears and biggest discoveries about vulnerability, kindness, hope, friendship and love. The shared adventures and important conversations between the four friends are full of life lessons that have connected with readers of all ages.

Let the fake snow fly, it is Christmas in July!

Yes, I’ve done Christmas in July a couple of times before. Who doesn’t like reading a stack of holiday reads on the beach? Or squeezing it in sometime between work and bed? It is escapism at its finest.
Of course, if you are in Australia, you can actually read about picturesque snowy scenes (or dangerous snowbound murder mysteries) while it is cold outside. Pull your chair up to the fire and grab a blanket and cup of hot chocolate!
So, what’s on tap this holiday season?

This December in Kilbane, if you’re planning to warm up with a cuppa tea at Naomi’s Bistro, you may have a bit of a wait—the entire O’Sullivan brood has gone off to West Cork to spend the holidays with brother James’s fiancée Elise’s family, including her grandfather, the famous orchestral conductor Enda Elliot. Siobhán is so happy for James and Elise but also quietly disappointed that she must put her own wedding to fellow garda Macdara Flannery on hold. Mac will have to join them later, so he can spend part of the holidays with his mam.
When the O’Sullivans learn everyone will choose a name from a hat to buy a music-related Christmas gift for someone else at the gathering, it seems like their greatest concern—until the cantankerous conductor is discovered crushed under a ninety-pound harp in a local concert hall.
With the extended family—including Enda’s much-younger new wife Leah, a virtuoso violinist—suspected in his murder, it’s up to Siobhán to ensure the guilty party faces the music. But as a snowstorm strands both families in a lavish farmhouse on a cliff, Siobhán had better pick up the tempo—before the killer orchestrates another untimely demise . .

There’s a chill in the air and the days are growing shorter . . . It’s the perfect time to curl up in front of a crackling fire with these wintry whodunits from the legendary Agatha Christie.

The 26th book and the sixth Christmas mystery in the Meg Lansglow series, Owl Be Home for Christmas is yet another wonderfully merry and funny book from New York Times bestselling author Donna Andrews.
It’s a few days before Christmas, and Meg’s grandfather is hosting a scientific conference on owls at the Caerphilly Inn. Most of the family are there, helping out in one capacity or another, including Meg’s grandmother, Cordelia–invited by Grandfather in rare gesture of peace-making, to share her expertise on rehabilitating large birds, including owls. An unexpectedly severe snow storm traps the conference-goers in the hotel, and one of the visiting ornithologists is murdered. Even if Caerphilly is able to clear the roads in time, Chief Burke doesn’t want the various suspects to scatter to half a dozen continents before he identifies the killer, so there’s a very real possibility that none of them will make it home for Christmas . . . at least not unless Meg comes to the rescue.
Full of intrigue and snow, this Christmas mystery will take readers home to Caerphilly for Christmas.

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, the Women’s Murder Club gets ready for a quiet Christmas—until a mysterious killer decides to terrorize the city.
As the holidays approach, Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends in the Women’s Murder Club have much to celebrate. Crime is down. The medical examiner’s office is quiet. Even the courts are showing some Christmas spirit. And the news cycle is so slow that journalist Cindy Thomas is on assignment to tell a story about the true meaning of the season for San Francisco.
Then a fearsome criminal known only as “Loman” seizes control of the headlines. Solving crimes never happens on schedule, but as this criminal mastermind unleashes credible threats by the hour, the month of December is upended for the Women’s Murder Club. Avoiding tragedy is the only holiday miracle they seek.

It’s Christmas, and things are looking good at the Slocombe house. Thea’s daughter Jessica has come to stay, much to her stepdaughter Stephanie’s delight. But then things take a turn for the worse. A local family, the Frowses, find themselves increasingly harassed by an aggressive landlord.
When Beverley Frowse goes missing, Thea and Stephanie both feel they should do their best to help her husband and son to solve the mystery.

Reindeer Games Christmas Tree Farm is going into the B&B business, and Holly White is looking forward to her new role as innkeeper. Even better, Mistletoe, Maine’s sheriff, Evan Gray, has deputized his little sister Libby to help Holly wrap presents for Mistletoe’s toy drive. But a cold wind ruffles the cheery holiday decorations when a new guest checks in: Cleo, a vicious B&B critic, who could make or break the new inn. And the short December days turn even darker when Evan and Libby find Cleo’s dead body in the gift-wrapped toy donation box.
The suspect list is longer than Santa’s naughty list, and local resident Cookie is on it, since her fingerprints are all over the murder weapon, a metal nutcracker that she gave to Holly. So is Libby, who recently moved to town from Boston in less-than-savory circumstances. But cranky Cleo was an oh-holy-nightmare to lots of the townsfolk, such as Evan’s reporter friend Ray; Christopher, the inn’s former contractor; and confectioner Bonnie, whose Gum Drop Shop was a direct target of Cleo’s scathing prose.
To figure out the killer’s identity and clear Cookie’s name, Holly and her friends brainstorm at The Hearth, the farm’s café, while her mother keeps them fueled with Christmas goodies fresh from the oven. But if they can’t put the culprit on ice, Holly may never see another Christmas.

After spending the last two years remaking himself, Ebenezer Scrooge is once again visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley. Except this time, he is sent on a mission to save an old friend, Hezekiah Hiram Grumbles, who has recently been accused of murder.
In order to clear Mr. Grumbles’s name, Scrooge travels to Cornwall along with Bob Cratchit, his business partner; Frederick Edmund Nuckols, his nephew; and Lockie, his new office boy with sticky fingers.
Scrooge must put himself in the line of fire in order to solve the mystery, and in doing so, he will discover that not everything is what it seems, and it takes a lot of courage to be selfless.

In Hercule Poirot’s Christmas, the holidays are anything but merry when a family reunion is marred by murder—and the notoriously fastidious investigator is quickly on the case.
Christmas Eve, and the Lee family’s reunion is shattered by a deafening crash of furniture and a high-pitched wailing scream. Upstairs, the tyrannical Simeon Lee lies dead in a pool of blood, his throat slashed.
When Hercule Poirot offers to assist, he finds an atmosphere not of mourning but of mutual suspicion. It seems everyone had their own reason to hate the old man. . . .

Investigate A Willing Murder

Have you picked up a copy of my latest release, Magic Ain’t a Game? It is book 11 in the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series, but can be read as a stand alone. Grab it now if you haven’t already. And you can get book #1 in the series, What the Cat Knew for free or the first three books for $2.99 for a limited time.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I don’t think that I have read anything else by Jude Deveraux, though it is obvious from her Amazon Author page that she is a prolific author. But it looks like most of what she writes is romance, and I am not a romance reader.
A Willing Murder is well-written, and I would not have guessed that it was written by a romance author. The characters and relationships are good, but there is nothing racy and no sex scenes. One kiss, I think. The foundation for the murder mystery is solid and the characters are able to get from one clue to another without anything too unbelievable and without breaking too many laws.
The mystery is more about the relationships and what exactly happened before the two women were murdered, rather than being about who did it, because it is clear very early on who the murderer is. The characters may not see it, but an astute reader can. But knowing (or having a pretty good idea) who it was did not diminish my enjoyment.
My teaser is a quote that I bookmarked so I could go back and write it down later, and is about Sarah Medlar, an author character in the story. I got the feeling that she was an author surrogate for Jude Deveraux. I may need to get it printed on a t-shirt.
Her years of plotting made her an expert on what needed to be done and in what order.
Jude Deveraux, A Willing Murder

Sara Medlar is a household name in romance, with millions of books sold. But lately, retirement has been boring her and she’s found herself back in her hometown of Lachlan, Florida, remodeling the grand old mansion she’d admired as a child. It’s much too big for her alone, but she’d die before letting anyone in town know that.
Then Sara’s niece Kate is offered a job in Lachlan—a start in what could be a very successful career in real estate. She accepts immediately, but with so little saved up, she’ll have to approach her estranged yet incredibly famous aunt for a place to stay while she gets herself settled. But when she arrives at Sara’s home, she finds she’s not the only long-term houseguest. Jackson Wyatt already has his own room, and though it’s impossible to deny his good looks and charm—he’s clearly got her aunt wrapped around his finger—she’s also never met anyone who irritates her quite like Jack does.
However, when two skeletons are accidentally uncovered in the quiet town, this unlikely trio is suddenly thrust together by a common goal: to solve a mystery everyone else seems eager to keep under wraps. United by a sense of justice and the desire to right old wrongs, Sara, Kate and Jack will have to dig into Lachlan’s murky past to unravel the small town’s dark secrets and work to bring the awful truth to light.

I love this spellbinding series. I know I’ve said this before, but this series really does get better with each book. The magical crimes investigation had me on the edge of my seat throughout. A druglord is looking for me and there is a 6-figure bounty on my head…

Hadley Hunter thought she was getting a grip on the paranormal world she never knew existed until recently. She was wrong. In the shadow of a massive shifter retreat, she finds she knew absolutely nothing.
Her live-in love Galen Blackwood has his hands full with the conference. Not only is his mother pressuring him to make his presence known but it’s also up to him to keep the not-so-friendly factions from going to war. Things only get stickier when a member of the Michigan wolf contingent ends up dead on the docks.
Hadley wants to help Galen, as does his cousin Aric Winters, who has brought his magical mage wife Zoe and their daughter to the island at the behest of his father. Aric prefers distance when it comes to shifter politics but he’s happy to see his cousin, and be introduced to Hadley for the first time.
Because they’re not shifters, Hadley and Zoe are considered outsiders. That allows them to join together to track down a murderer.
Hadley is out of her element but she’s determined to help Galen by any means necessary. Unfortunately for her, the other wolves don’t like it … and decide to make it an issue worth dying for.
A wolf war is brewing and Hadley is at the center of it. Not only that but she’s a target. It’s going to take all of her witchy energy – plus a little help from a new friend – to make it through to the other side.
Somebody else has different plans … and they’re deadly. It might be the wolves warring, but Hadley is the one who might die on the battlefield.

Jack loves his wife. Ivy will do whatever it takes to protect her husband. Will one of them have to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect the other in the end?
It’s a hot race to the finish, and Ivy’s magic will have a say in the outcome.

Police Chief Delaney Reed can handle supernatural disasters. With gods vacationing in her little town of Ordinary, Oregon, and monsters living alongside humans, she’s had plenty of practice.
But trying to handle something so normal, so average, so very ordinary as planning her own wedding to the man she loves? Delaney is totally out of her depth. When a car falls out of the sky and lands on the beach, Delaney is more than happy to push guest lists and venue dates out of her mind. The car appears empty, but someone has slipped into Ordinary with stolen weapons from the gods. Someone who has the ability to look like any god, monster, or human in town. Someone who might set off a supernatural disaster even Delaney can’t handle.

Against everyone’s expectations – including her own – Robin Wildwood has gained the coveted title of Head Witch. But not everyone is thrilled at that outcome…
With her squirrel familiar, Tansy, at her side, Robin determines to make the best of her unexpected position, but the Wildwood Coven isn’t inclined to let the family’s black sheep barge in and shake everything up. Even her grandmother’s ghost and her cantankerous cat familiar have their own opinions on how things should be run, while her scheming aunt is less than thrilled at losing out to the family screw-up.
Helping to judge the local familiar contest ought to be a welcome relief, but when one of the contenders drops dead, Robin finds herself tasked with looking after a traumatised chicken familiar as well as preventing herself from becoming the killer’s next target.

Unfortunately, that notorious recluse is also a software magnate with security clearance.

Oh, and LA is ground zero for the final showdown between the Council of Thaumaturges and the Orthodoxy, so that’s throwing a monkey wrench into everything as well.

Bookstore owner Willa Chance had no idea that a magical key was hidden in the old recipe book that she sold to food blogger Mary Ashford. Luckily the key is now safely tucked away in a box high on a shelf in the bookstore…. or is it?
Feline sleuth Pandora needs Willa’s help to make sure that key doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. This time she’ll have to take drastic measures to break through the barrier that has stopped her from communicating with her human… even if she has to take a chance on one of Pepper St. Onge’s enchanted teas. The teas are known to have unpredictable results, but Pandora is desperate and what could be worse than the threat to Mystic Notch?
The results of drinking the tea are worse than Pandora could have ever imagined. But not worse than murder. Which is exactly what happens to Mary Ashford. And if Pandora and Willa don’t figure out who is behind this, Mary won’t be the only one who ends up dead.

Scout Randall knows what she is, more than a witch, more powerful than she ever thought imaginable. She’s only hit the tip of the iceberg on what she can do. Now she has to grapple with another problem.

She’s not prepared for what she finds, including a gaggle of witches who like to cause trouble wherever they go.
Evan is there, lurking in the shadows and struggling with an identity he didn’t ask for, but death is stalking the town from multiple directions. Murder, mayhem, and monsters are afoot and Scout is determined to get to the bottom of it all … even if her life is in danger in the process.

Listening to The Sound of Broken Glass

If you’re interested in what I am working on right now, take a jump over to my Nanowrimo project page. And be sure to stop back here this weekend for the release of Magic Ain’t a Game, if you haven’t already put it on preorder!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Last week, I was listening to the audiobook for The Sound of Broken Glass, book 15 in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels series by Deborah Crombie. I think that I may have read a book or two in this series before, but I’m not sure. There is definitely enough backstory included in the book that you are not last as to what the people’s relationships and histories are. As with most mysteries or police procedurals, they are episodic and you can jump in and read one even if it isn’t the first in the series.
Gemma James is called in on a homicide and soon finds that it is not as straightforward as she had hoped. A second, almost identical homicide follows, but she is having a very hard time finding the connection between the murders and how the two of them fit together. One of the persons of interest is a musician that she/Duncan Kincaid have dealt with in the past. There is lots of interesting backstory about his life and about the Crystal Palace in London. She and Duncan both end up working the case. Engaging and well-told, with a satisfying ending.
It wasn’t until he hit the last chord and gave a bow to the audience that he realized he was bleeding. He’d cut his left thumb and the bright blood had splattered, almost invisible against the Strat’s red finish.
Deborah Crombie, The Sound of Broken Glass

Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James are on the case in Deborah Crombie’s The Sound of Broken Glass, a captivating mystery that blends a murder from the past with a powerful danger in the present.
When Detective Inspector James joins forces with Detective Inspector Melody Talbot to solve the murder of an esteemed barrister, their investigation leads them to realize that nothing is what it seems—with the crime they’re investigating and their own lives.
With an abundance of twists and turns and intertwining subplots, The Sound of Broken Glass by New York Times bestselling author Deborah Crombie is an elaborate and engaging page-turner.

It’s Camp Nanowrimo — again!

If you’ve been hanging around here for a while, you probably know that I write for Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) in November and Camp Nano in April and July every year. The goal in Nanowrimo is to write a book of 50,000 words or more during the month. During the “camps” you can set your own goals, which can be words or hours, however many you like. During Camp Nano, you used to be assigned to a virtual cabin, a message board with a number of other authors, where you could chat with and encourage each other. Things have changed a little with their website overhaul, but it is still a fun even to participate in.
Find Nanowrimo and Camp Nanowrimo at nanowrimo.org
So what am I writing for Camp Nano this month?
I am working on the next three books in the Parks Pat Mysteries series. I have just finished the first draft of book 4, and will get started on book 5 today. Here is a sneak peak:
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-757f5e3 .ugb-img{width:640px;height:auto !important}}Immersed in the View (Book 4)Detective “Parks” Pat is back. Now an established and accepted member of the homicide squad, she unexpectedly brings a new case to the table when she stumbles across a body as Canada Day dawns. While it was initially assumed to be an accidental drowning, the autopsy results say otherwise.
Margie is soon off and running, but the lack of witnesses has her going in circles. Meanwhile, the brass wants the investigation put to bed before the city is flooded with Calgary Stampede tourists and dignitaries.

It’s Parade Day, and Margie would have thought that any trouble would have centered around drinking and motor vehicles. Or being trampled by horses. Or clowns. But the latest homicide investigation is nowhere near the parade route, but on the outskirts of town. And the culprit appears to be a tiny boat.
Why do so many deaths in parks have to be by drowning?
Margie Patenaude is once again looking at death in the water. The boats may be small, but the suspect list is growing.

A mighty fall.
This case might just leave Margie feeling nostalgic about the water deaths she has been investigating lately. A woman is found at the bottom of a 70-meter drop. It is pretty clear from the beginning that she was killed in the fall.
But you can never be sure until the medical examiner’s report comes back. It would appear that there is a lot more to be investigated after all. Maybe this close-knit community wasn’t quite all it appeared to be.

You can find the first three books in the Parks Pat series here. All three are being released in September and are available for preorder.

Lose Yourself in The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B

Did you know that Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator 1-3 is currently on sale for $2.99? If you have not started this series, now would be a great time to pick it up!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I just finished reading The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten, an author I don’t think I have read before. What a great book! Toten writes about Adam Spencer Ross, a teen battling OCD, and his family and group relationships as well as the girl in group that he falls in love with and vows to “save.”
His feelings and relationships and the way that OCD affects his life is very believable and relatable. The reader really ends up caring about him and how things will turn out. I was not surprised by the final plot twist, but expecting it did not make it any less enjoyable.
Teresa Toten’s writing is similar to that of John Green and Patrick Ness, who are well-known in the Contemporary YA market.
For her, Adam would be and could be normal and fearless. He so wanted to be fearless. He could do it. He would be her superhero.
Teresa Toten, The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B

Filled with moments of deep emotion and unexpected humor, this understated and wise novel explores the complexities of living with OCD and offers the prospect of hope, happiness and healing. Perfect for readers who love Eleanor & Park and All the Bright Places.
ADAM’S GOALS:
Grow immediately.
Find courage.
Keep courage.
Get normal.
Marry Robyn Plummer.
The instant Adam Spencer Ross meets Robyn Plummer in his Young Adult OCD Support Group, he is hopelessly, desperately drawn to her. Robyn has an hypnotic voice, blue eyes the shade of an angry sky, and ravishing beauty that makes Adam’s insides ache. She’s also just been released from a residential psychiatric program—the kind for the worst, most difficult-to-cure cases; the kind that Adam and his fellow support group members will do anything to avoid joining.
Adam immediately knows that he has to save Robyn, must save Robyn, or die trying. But is it really Robyn who needs rescuing? And is it possible to have a normal relationship when your life is anything but?

Meet Stacy Justice. Journalist. Reluctant witch. Professional klutz. Her grandmother believes she’s destined to be the most powerful witch of the century. She’s just trying to get through the day without spilling mustard on her shirt or tripping over a dead body.
Stacy Justice is a young reporter who lives in Chicago, far away from the kooky small town of Amethyst, Illinois, where she was raised by a family of witches. She’s perfectly content with her career, her cat, and her lack of a love life until her cousin informs her that their grandfather is deathly ill. Stacy road-trips home only to discover that her grandfather was poisoned, her grandmother has confessed to the crime, and there’s a new chief in town who is easy on the eyes, but tough on witches.
Now, the reluctant witch must prove her grandmother’s innocence, save her grandfather from meeting an untimely end, and fight the killer that’s bent on destroying them all.

Every town has its secrets, but no one has a secret like hers.
Amber Blackwood, lifelong resident of Edgehill, Oregon, has earned a reputation for being a semi-reclusive odd duck. Her store, The Quirky Whisker, is full of curiosities, from extremely potent sleepy teas and ever-burning candles to kids’ toys that seem to run endlessly without the aid of batteries. The people of Edgehill think of The Quirky Whisker as an integral part of their feline-obsessed town, but most give Amber herself a wide berth. Amber prefers it that way; it keeps her secret safe. But that secret is thrown into jeopardy when Amber’s friend Melanie is found dead, a vial of headache tonic from Amber’s store clutched in her hand.
Edgehill’s newest police chief has had it out for Amber since he arrived three years before. He can’t possibly know she’s a witch, but his suspicions about her odd store and even odder behavior have shot her to the top of his suspect list. When the Edgehill rumor mill finds out Melanie was poisoned, it’s not only the police chief who looks at Amber differently. My name is Nora Black, and I’m fifty-one-years young. At least that’s what I tell myself, when I’m not having hot flashes, my knees don’t hurt, and I can find my reading glasses.
I’m also the proud owner of a salon called Scents & Scentsability in the small resort town of Garden Cove, where I make a cozy living selling handmade bath and beauty products. All in all, my life is pretty good.
Except for one little glitch…
Since my recent hysterectomy, where I died on the operating table, I’ve been experiencing what some might call paranormal activity. No, I don’t see dead people, but quite suddenly I’m triggered by scents that, in their wake, leave behind these vividly intense memories. Sometimes they’re unfocused and hazy, but there’s no doubt, they are very, very real.
Know what else? They’re not my memories. It seems I’ve lost a uterus and gained a psychic gift.
When my best friend’s abusive boyfriend ends up dead after a fire, and she becomes the prime suspect, I end up a babysitter to her two teenagers while she’s locked up in the clink. Add to that the handsome detective determined to stand in my way, my super sniffer’s newly acquired abilities and a rash of memories connected to the real criminal, and I find myself in a race to catch a killer before my best friend is tried for murder.

“…the perfect blend of magic and mayhem. This series has me completely bewitched!”

Come to Whitewitch Island, they said. A nice place to retire, they said…
Who knew I owned so much stuff? Or that it would take up all this space in so many boxes I could barely navigate the rather substantial living room. Gathering things appeared to be one of my vices, though I hadn’t noticed when I’d packed up my old place on the East coast for this journey to the West and a new beginning. Especially since I’d done so in a hurry and more than a little magic aided in the actual stuffing of my plethora of belongings into their temporary containment.
I’d told myself I wasn’t running away, almost believed it. Except, the clifftop Pacific Ocean view had been so crammed with cardboard and the detritus of my last life I could barely glimpse the water. Surely such blockage wasn’t an omen. More likely, I had to admit my rapid retreat from who I used to be really had been a bit of a scramble out of the way of everything I knew and my concerns about foretelling was just another excuse to avoid the truth.
I ran. So be it.
Retired Guild Artemis Inquisitor Georgia Drake has left the paranormal world behind after the death of her partner in the line of duty. Along with her job investigating crime and murder. With her Hades Guardian mastiff, Benjamin, and raven pair for company, she moves her entire life across the continent to escape not only the loss but her oppressive and powerful family. But someone like George isn’t meant for a nice, quiet retreat to the normal human world. The biggest problem? Crime and murder aren’t through with her. When a local is killed by unusual means, she is recruited by the eager but untested sheriff to assist in uncovering the truth. Except, doing so means digging up the past that most residents of Whitewitch Island would rather forget…

The CIA never left Latin America…
The CIA is facing catastrophic blackmail at the hands of an erratic Guatemalan drug lord: the infamous patrón of Antigua – Pablo Puentes. Desperate for a swift solution, the agency calls in their black operative fixer: John Carpenter.
John is a cold-blooded professional ready for the job. But the mission doesn’t have a simple fix. Pablo has a disastrous kill switch in place.
John is still haunted by the mysterious death of his best friend who died on a far too similar mission, and now is uncertain about how much he can trust his handler or his sensual partner.
Back at the agency, tensions are running hot as the stench of corruption is growing to a boiling point. If things aren’t put to rights – and soon – the entire mission will go up in flames and take the CIA down with it.
Only John Carpenter can bring this drug lord to justice and get the answers he deserves.
Because this mission is personal…
