Things were already bad enough for Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator. As if being the target of bigotry and hate crimes wasn’t enough, she fears she may finally be losing her grip on her own sanity.
She’s losing her memories, sense of reality, and her central self. And, of course, there’s the small matter of a dead body that she appears to be responsible for.
Going back to a life on the street scraping by with a few psychic readings and spiritual contacts is actually starting to look pretty good. P.D. Workman’s witchy writing carries you through a world that can make you stop and wander. Could something like this really happen? Could it be possible? You sure wish it could be. Even the smile you have at the end says this might just be the beginning of a magical new life.
This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat.

Reg Rawlins, professional con, has really gotten herself into a bind this time.
The fortune teller gig started as a scam, but she suddenly finds herself tangled up in the case of Warren Blake, a man who she thought was dead. It turns out he may still be alive, but in mortal peril.
Reg has always taken the quick exit, the easy way out, but running out on this racket might mean someone else’s death.
Staying in it might mean hers.

The psychic medium who is petrified of ghosts!
Becky moves to Branden Bay, leaving a fast paced life in London behind her.
She’s soon disturbed by shadows which lurk in her house. She’s inherited more than her grandma’s house and a sassy cat. She’s been given the so-called gift for seeing the dead.
But the only gift Becky wants is one that comes with fancy wrapping and a bow.
To rid herself of the ghosts that haunt her, she must unravel a cold case mystery.

Hi! My name is Odessa Grimsbane, and I love pumpkins, scarecrows, and Brodie. Oh, and delicious, powdered pumpkin candy. Let’s not forget the super-charged treats.
My scarecrows are magical, my pumpkins are the best in show, and my Brodie… well, he’s dead. But not for much longer.
Before I can bring back Brodie – did I mention I’m amazing at reanimation magic – I need a vessel for him to live in and to find his ghost, which has been hiding for three years. A not insignificant problem. No ghost, no reanimation, and no true love.
However, defeat isn’t in this witch’s vocabulary. After all, true love only strikes once, and I’m not letting it go. No matter what it takes, I’m getting my happily ever after.
If only an anxious ghost hadn’t just shown up demanding his murder be solved. And did Eldridge have to knock me over to tell me about his unhappy demise? Well, he’s about to turn into a dangerous ghoul, so time isn’t on this frustrated ghost’s side. And, good news, he agrees to find Brodie for me. So we strike a deal. I get suspect hunting, while Eldridge gets ghost hunting.
Here’s hoping my pumpkin magic helps me figure out how to become an amazing sleuth because if I don’t, I’ll never find Brodie and will have to destroy Eldridge when he shifts into a lethal, out-of-control ghost ghoul. Yikes! And I thought making magically enchanted killer scarecrows was tricky.
Oh! And I’m in trouble with the Magic Council, but we’ll talk about that another time. Anyone for a pumpkin and dark chocolate cookie?

Newly vaccinated, Marcia Banks can finally schedule the human phase of training with her Air Force pilot client—the soon-to-be owner of a Chow-Husky service dog named Bear. But when she calls to set things up, she’s informed that the veteran has been in a private psychiatric hospital for months, with no one allowed to visit due to Covid.
Marcia puts out feelers to find out what is going on, and suddenly he is discharged…only to have his private plane crash in a fiery ball two days later. Convinced this is no coincidence, Marcia attempts to find out how her veteran client became the target of a murderer.
What she uncovers looks suspiciously like a scheme to defraud the Veterans’ Administration. But who’s behind it, and did they sabotaged her client’s plane? Or did the saboteur have a more personal motive?
And just how determined are they to silence Marcia?

The murders in St. Marin’s Library’s mystery section just got very real.
When the local librarian is found dead among the stacks, the rumors about her reputation reach a fever pitch, but Harvey Beckett can’t let a fellow book-lover’s name be sullied. But when she drags her friends and her dogs into the investigation, she finds that it’s more than just rumors she has to contend with.

Dr. Kep Woodhead is a brilliant, irascible forensic toxicologist with a dark past.
Bernadette Becker is a disgraced federal investigator with one last chance.
They’re both assigned to a strange poisoning case: a graduate student has been found dead in a 15th-century chapel, overdosed on a controversial hallucinogen.
The list of suspects is long: the priest, the professor, the piscary president, the protestor, the protégé, and at least one wants to silence Becker.

Lila Harrow, baker-witch extraordinaire, had one hard and fast rule. Stay away from bake sales.
Because baking can be murder.
Now thanks to her hex-loving, blackmail-wielding grandmother, Elspeth Harrow, Lila’s stuck as a judge for the annual Point Muse Academy’s Founding Day bake sale.
But when the competition heats up and the body count rises, what’s Lila to do but add a little spice to the mix and solve a murder.
A piece of cake for a witchy baker.

The Tattle-Tale Cafe is a great place to grab a drink–and catch up on the latest gossip.
The waitresses are friendly and the regular patrons are more than willing to help out when someone is in need. Even if that includes solving a crime or two.
So, grab your cup of Joe and a table overlooking the beach and get ready to hear the latest…

When Dana Fox, feisty mother of two, discovers the dead body of a bullying poodle breeder at the dog show, the Chicks are pushed deep into the middle of another mystery. The wrong man is in jail and it’s up to Dana, leader of the pack, Abigail Truelove, owner of Pampered
Pooch, and Molly Gibson, a shy romance writer, to collar the real killer.
Solving this mystery isn’t as easy as depicted in the Agatha Christie books shelved in the Chicks’ local library. Far from it. Especially when the victim is the most hated man in the show world and the suspect list reads like an open phone directory.
Dealing with a wacky fortune teller, a hot gym instructor, homeless guys armed with shopping trolleys, Queen Bee of the Yummy Mummies and an English Lord called Dumpling would keep even the inimitable Poirot himself awake at nights.
And just when they think they’ve cracked the case – another dead body says otherwise…

A dead body. Small town secrets. What’s Anne digging up this time?
Anne Fremont is branching out into creating garden plans for town residents. After Anne finds Billie, the garden club president dead, something doesn’t add up.
While her client’s death appears accidental, rumors of affairs and troubling questions emerge. Anne knows the truth hides in the tiniest details.
As she digs further, more dirt is revealed into the lives of the garden club members. It appears someone may have silenced Billie to keep their secret hidden.

Puppies and poison in Dead in Dublin

If you missed my sweet post on National S’more Day last week, you might want to check it out for some variations on your favourite fireside treat, including gluten-free graham crackers. And of course… more books.
Without Foresight, book #12 in the Reg Rawlins Psychic Investigator series releases this Friday! Be sure to check back here for more about Without Foresight and other new releases! You can preorder Without Foresight from me or most online retailers now.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
My book for this week is Dead in Dublin by Catie Murphy. With the very Irish name of Catie Murphy writing an Irish cozy mystery, I am not sure whether this is the author’s real name or a pen name. I checked out her biography, and this is what I found out about her:
Catie Murphy, is the author of Dead in Dublin and numerous award-winning fantasy and sci-fi books under the pseudonym C. E. Murphy. She was born and raised in Alaska, and now lives with her family in her ancestral homeland of Ireland.
Dead in Dublin is the first book in The Dublin Driver Mysteries, which surprised me when I looked it up. There is lots of backstory summarized in Dead in Dublin, and I assumed that there were probably three or more books before it in the series. So this book may leave you a little hungry for more details of “what happened before,” but it is a fine standalone mystery and I’m sure the author will reveal more about Megan Malone’s origin story throughout the next two books in the series. I will definitely pick up the others as they become available through my library app.
With a poisoned food critic, Jack Russell terrier puppies, and a handsome police officer also investigating the case, this book has everything cozy readers are looking for.
Megan looked back, surprised at the fervor in Fionn’s voice, and then the brightness in her eyes. “Thank you, Meg. It’s me life you’re saving.”
Catie Murphy, Dead in Dublin

Ferrying tourists around Dublin for the Leprechaun Limo Service makes quite a change after years in the military. Still, Megan Malone is enjoying her life in Ireland. She likes the scenery, the easy pace, the quirky, quick-witted locals. Everything—except having one of her clients drop dead at the statue of fabled fishmonger, Molly Malone.
Most restaurant critics notch up their share of enemies. Elizabeth Darr, however, was a well-loved international star. She and her husband, Simon, had just had dinner when Elizabeth collapsed, and spoiled seafood is the first suspect. The restaurant’s owner, worried her business is doomed, begs Megan to look into it. Between her irate boss and a handsome Garda who’s both amused and annoyed by her persistence, Megan has her hands full even before she’s cajoled into taking care of two adorable Jack Russell puppies (which she is almost definitely not keeping). But if cockles and mussels aren’t to blame, can Megan find the real culprit . . .before another fishy death occurs?

A Mighty Fall
This case might just leave Margie feeling nostalgic about the water deaths she has been investigating lately.
A woman is found at the bottom of a 70-meter drop. It is pretty clear from the beginning that she was killed in the fall.
But you can never be sure until the medical examiner’s report comes back. It would appear that there is a lot more to be investigated after all.
Maybe this close-knit community wasn’t quite all it appeared to be.

Death by Misadventure?
It’s Parade Day, and Margie would have thought that any trouble would have centered around drinking and motor vehicles. Or being trampled by horses. Or clowns. But the latest homicide investigation is nowhere near the parade route, but on the outskirts of town. And the culprit appears to be a tiny boat.
Why do so many deaths in parks have to be by drowning?
Margie Patenaude is once again looking at death in the water. The boats may be small, but the suspect list is growing.

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

Jump right into Body of Lies

How do you feel about S’mores? August 10 is National S’mores Day, so I have pulled together a sweet little post full of sticky s’mores and heroines and heroes in sticky situations. I’ll bet your mouth is watering already!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
This week I am just coming to the end of Iris Johansen’s Body of Lies, the fourth book in the Eve Duncan series. I don’t know whether I’ve read any of the other books in the series before, but it is easy to follow the characters and the action without having read the rest. There is plenty of backstory and explanation to allow you to follow the basic history of the characters.
Set mostly in Baton Rouge, this thriller is a great mix of mystery, forensic details, and heart-stopping action. I am still wondering whether to suspect some of the supposed good guys in this tale. It’s clear that there is a mastermind behind the plot and there are plenty of moles and informants, hinting at the fact that there is someone corrupt high up in the FBI.
I quite like the main character, Eve Duncan. A forensic sculptor, she reminds me a little of my Micah Miller, a forensic DNA phenotyping artist in Virtually Harmless. Both of them bring faces to both villains and victims, in an effort to bring killers and other baddies to justice.
Never underestimate women. I’ve known some that I’d rather avoid than come up against.
Iris Johansen, Body of Lies

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan has been summoned to Baton Rouge by a high-ranking government official to identify the remains of an unknown murder victim. Eve wants nothing to do with the project. She has finally found peace from her own tragic past, living a quiet life with Atlanta detective Joe Quinn and her adopted daughter, Jane. Then a stunning series of seemingly unrelated events turns Eve’s new world upside down.
Now, in a special government facility, she takes on the project of identifying the victim’s skeleton. But she hasn’t even begun when another death occurs. Someone totally ruthless, who can strike anywhere at any time and with seeming immunity, is determined to put a halt to her work, her life, and the lives of those she loves. Eve has stumbled onto a chilling conspiracy. There is only one person who can give her the devastating truth . . . and he’s already dead.

S’more Mysteries

August 10 is National S’more Day! I have decided to honour the day with some s’more recipes and great mysteries to read by the campfire (or in the comfort of your home if you are not a camper or it’s winter where you live. Campfires and stories go together like… graham crackers, marshmallow, and chocolate.
You know the basic s’more recipe, which has been around since at least 1927! Well, today, I’ll bring you some variations!
First up is are gluten-free s’mores. For the celiac, conventional graham crackers are a big no-no. You could go with a commercial gluten-free graham cracker, such as Smoreables from Kinnickinnick, which are primarily pea flour, but they also have rice in them. This recipe for buckwheat graham crackers has never failed me.
.ugb-cd1d18d .ugb-text__rule{background:#ECECEC !important}Gluten-Free Graham Crackers1 cup light buckwheat flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of salt
2 tbsp coconut oil
1/3 cup coconut sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup water
Cream coconut oil and sugar together. Add vanilla extract. In a separate bowl combine all dry ingredients.
Add water sparingly until a doughy consistency is achieved. Don’t add too much! Once you combine the dough with your hands you may find if becomes wetter that way. Form dough into a 1 inch round disc shape, wrap in plastic wrap and put in fridge. Roll out completely flat on a piece of parchment by placing plastic wrap on top and rolling it out with a rolling pin. Peel off plastic wrap. Cut into rectangles and poke a couple times with a fork.
Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.
I use these graham crackers with Dandies vegan marshmallows and dark chocolate for a gluten-free, vegan s’more that I can eat. Delicious. The only problem is stopping!
Pair these with Gluten-Free Murder.
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-9266625 .ugb-img{width:669px;height:auto !important}}Gluten-Free MurderErin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.
Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her. P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. I haven’t been that invested in a book in a while.
Couldn’t put it down !! From a cute kitten to a police dog to a bakery for people with allergies ! Highly recommend!

Take a banana with its peel still on and cut it down the middle (along the concave side). Not all the way through, but until the tip of your knife just grazes the peel on the other side. You can then pull the peel and banana slightly apart.
Toppings are usually stuffed in a single line down the center of the banana. Feel free to mash your banana to either side to make some extra room.

Come to Whitewitch Island, they said. A nice place to retire, they said…
Who knew I owned so much stuff? Or that it would take up all this space in so many boxes I could barely navigate the rather substantial living room. Gathering things appeared to be one of my vices, though I hadn’t noticed when I’d packed up my old place on the East coast for this journey to the West and a new beginning. Especially since I’d done so in a hurry and more than a little magic aided in the actual stuffing of my plethora of belongings into their temporary containment.I’d told myself I wasn’t running away, almost believed it. Except, the clifftop Pacific Ocean view had been so crammed with cardboard and the detritus of my last life I could barely glimpse the water. Surely such blockage wasn’t an omen. More likely, I had to admit my rapid retreat from who I used to be really had been a bit of a scramble out of the way of everything I knew and my concerns about foretelling was just another excuse to avoid the truth.
I ran. So be it.
Retired Guild Artemis Inquisitor Georgia Drake has left the paranormal world behind after the death of her partner in the line of duty. Along with her job investigating crime and murder. But someone like George isn’t meant for a nice, quiet retreat to the normal human world. The biggest problem? Crime and murder aren’t through with her. When a local is killed by unusual means, she is recruited by the eager but untested sheriff to assist in uncovering the truth.
Except, doing so means digging up the past that most residents of Whitewitch Island would rather forget…

Middle age was never so much fun – if you don’t count the murders.

The Night Sister is a creepy read

If you didn’t yet get a chance to read my blog post on Personal Power in Fiction, you might want to head over and pick up a few new reads. Personal Power is a theme that runs through many of my books; characters lacking in power and finding their power and ability to effect change.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I picked up this week’s read, The Night Sister, from the mystery shelf without realizing that it is classified as “ghost suspense,” so I was a little surprised with the direction that it went in, but that didn’t detract from the book. I still found it quite interesting and engaging. If you are the type who loves to share creepy ghost stories around the campfire, this might just be the book for you.
Good description, mood, and advancement of the plot. It will keep you guessing as you gradually put together the pieces to get a clear picture. I don’t think that I’ve read anything by Jennifer McMahon before, but it looks like she has a number of books in this genre, so if it is something you enjoy, there is more to choose from.
If only Amy could travel back in time, talk to those two girls, warn them what was coming. Warn them that one day, it would all lead to this moment: Amy alone and out of options, on the verge of doing something terrible.
Jennifer McMahon, The Night Sister

A derelict motel, haunting childhood memories, hidden rooms, two sisters and family secrets–a supernatural tale that will thrill and chill in equal measure.
Once a thriving attraction on the well-traveled roads of rural Vermont, the Tower Motel now stands in disrepair, an eerie, abandoned place. Amy, her best friend, Piper, and Piper’s younger sister, Margot, played there as kids, exploring everywhere, even the forbidden tower itself–where they uncovered a secret one summer that ended their friendship.
Twenty years later, Piper has left all of that behind, until she gets a call from Margot telling her that Amy’s been accused of a horrific crime. Piper and Margot will have to confront what truly happened that long-ago summer and all that led up to it–a hidden room, a family drowning in secrets, another pair of sisters each believing the other to be something truly monstrous–in order to understand, and survive, what is happening now.
