Tripping: Here they come!

"Keep running!" He could hear her voice in the distance, but he couldn’t see her face.
"I can’t… My leg!" he cried exhausted. The wound in his left leg was healed, but the pain was killing him. "Please, I need to stop!"
"we can’t! Don’t you see? They are almost here!" The girl was shouting. He was too distracted to hear her. Too many noises around them. Birds, crickets, wind, steps. Everything too noisy because of his Enhance Hearing.
"Who are they?" he managed to said. "Why are they following us?" The girl stopped, turned and looked directly at his blue eyes.
"They are cannibals."

They ran as fast as they could. The jungle was too humid they had difficulties on breathing. Tall trees covered the sky and few beams of light filtered between the leaves.
Both were sweating and breathing heavily. Their clothes were stuck on their skin and their combat boots were covered in mud.
The pain was increasing. He could feel it in his entire limb. He couldn’t keep running anymore. His eyesight was blurry and his voice was weak when he tried to called for her. He tripped. A huge root was on his way. He fell over sticky mud. Flies and mosquitoes were over his face. He was too tired to stand up and the pain was consuming his will. He called for the girl again, but she didn’t come back. He could hear the cannibals’ footsteps coming closer. He was doomed. He was dead. He wish the pain knocked him out, but it didn’t.

A history fan *and* bibliophile. I become quite distressed when I think of this. Such senseless destruction! -c
