Gun Deaths: A Complex Problem a Simple Solution
This is an unorthodox post for my author page, but if I've gained any kind of voice through my writing and it can help make a difference for good, I want to use any influence I can for the country I love.
Deaths by gun violence is at an unacceptable rate in our country and although it is a complex, multi-faceted problem, the answer is right in front of us, and we’re too busy fighting to see it. The solution to mass killings is that everyone is right. Simple as that.
Let me explain:
As a teacher of students with special needs, I often find myself in meetings with parents and other professionals to make a plan for a student. In the meetings the speech therapist has one idea, the transition coordinator has another, the general education teacher has one idea and the case worker has another. We go around the table discussing what might work for the student, then we implement all the ideas. For each student the success of each part of the plan will be different and that's okay. Some parts of the plan might be a flop for one student and that's okay too. We do everything we can because we care about the success of the program for that student. How dumb would it be for us to sit there and argue telling everyone who had a different idea than we had that they were stupid, delusional, disconnected, or wrong?
Nothing would get done and the student would suffer.
Same is true here.
We need to stop fighting with each other and instead agree with each other. We need to realize that this is a problem and move forward in every possible way to stop it. That requires work, change and being uncomfortable.
To my liberal/progressive friends: You are right.
We do need to catch up with the rest of the developed countries of the world. We need to follow the examples of European countries, Australia and Canada in making laws that protect our families. Do you want to know who else agrees with you? You're going to hate this, but Fox News personalities Bill O'Reilly and Gretchen Carlson have said similar things back in 2016 after the Orlando shooting.
"My solution to the gun problem is this: Congress debates which guns are allowed. You can't have a bazooka, you can't have hand grenades, no, you can't. It's perfectly legitimate for congress to say, "What kind of rifles should people be able to buy?"" Bill O'Reilly June 14 2016 Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
"Do we need AF-15s to hunt and kill deer? Do we need them to protect our families? I'm in favor of people being able to carry... But I'm also with the majority today, taking a stand. Can't we hold true to the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?" Gretchen Carlson June 2016.
To my conservative friends: You are right!
There is a huge problem in our country with mental health. We need to look into that and give resources to help find solutions. There is more violence in television, video games, music and literature than ever before. People are desensitized to violence and that is a huge problem.
The home is the central building block of society and we need to strengthen homes and families. Parents need to do their part to educate and protect their children. Respect for authority is deteriorating and needs to be brought back.
Many of my conservative friends often tell me of making our country safer by extreme vetting and common sense regulations when it comes to immigration. I completely agree with you, now let's apply that to gun control.
Why can't we all agree and move forward on all fronts?
Next time someone posts something you don't agree with, instead of insulting them or engaging in a pointless fight, try to remember something. You're seeing their post because you are their friend, or you chose to follow them. I have been shocked at how mean friends and family have been to each other because they have different ideas on how to solve this problem. We need to unite and move forward in every possible way.
When a person says "Guns don't kill people. People kill people!" you can respond: I agree that people kill people. That is a huge part of the problem. What can we do today to stop people from killing other people?"
When another friend says "We need gun control laws!" You can respond: I agree that some guns should be kept away from civilians, that is part of the problem. How can we do that while still upholding our rights?
The only time you can be wrong!
The one thing that frustrates me most about the debates that follow a mass shooting is how people always point fingers at others to solve the problem.
I know I'm generalizing but here goes:
Old white people watching Fox news: "There is no respect these days! People raising children are the problem. We didn't have these problems when I was growing up with guns in our trucks at school. People raising families now need to step up and fix this problem.
Young people watching CNN: "The problem is all the old white people in congress. They need to fix the laws."
Do you see how this is not going anywhere? If we point the finger at someone else and say it is their responsibility to fix the problem, nobody acts. Nobody listens. Nothing changes!
Call to Action
Conservatives: Our country needs you! You have a voice and a power that no amount of liberal picket lines can match. If you contact your congress person and say, like Gretchen Carlson, "Can't we hold true to the sanctity of the Second Amendment while still having common sense?" You can change the world! They will listen to you because you voted them in. It's not going to be easy, but controlling guns is one part of the solution of gun violence.
Parents and families: Our country needs you! You have a power of youth and energy. While being progressive, there are some things that are being lost. Never forget or diminish the importance of family. Restrict violence in the things your children view. What they see, forms who they are. You can change the world! They will listen to you because you are their parent. It's not always easy, but reducing violence in media in our homes is one part of the solution of gun violence.
I know those examples are very narrow, and I hope you don't get distracted by their limited scope. Can you see the point I am trying to make? This is a group effort, and every voice matters.
Conclusion
When we move outside of our comfort zone we can all be powerful in making change! Whatever solution you feel will work in solving the problem with gun violence, is part of the solution. We need to move forward on that. But we also need to move forward on ideas you don't necessarily agree with so we are covered on all fronts. Just like a team of teachers trying to help a single student excel. We're a team. It's our country. Let's work together!

Buy a Book Save a Life, Final Count
Hi everyone. I wanted to give you an update as soon as possible on the Buy a Book Save a Life program that I ran during the month of January.
For anyone joining with us now, welcome, and here's a brief summary. Every book I sold in January I donated 100% of what I made off the book to Family Humanitarian Experience water projects to get clean water to remote villages in Africa.
Throughout the month, I posted two videos, shared some thoughts and had a great response. It didn't raise the money I was hoping for, but we did pretty well. I sold about 180 books and e-books (mostly e-books).
I'm making a donation to FHe for $200 for their water project. Thank you again for everyone who helped make this possible! That is going to help 200 people have clean drinking water for their entire lives.

Buy a Book Save a Life (Final Week)
Hi everyone! Quick Update: The video I made on week 2 was shared and sent around quite a bit on facebook hitting nearly 2000 view, and about 50 on youtube. I am very grateful for everyone who did see the video and reacted to it.
It's looking like we'll hit about 150 book sales this month, which is far short of my goal, and I was feeling a little down about that last week. It was a strange feeling because I'm not upset with anyone or anything, but I just had high hopes for this helping people and it didn't quite get there.
I spoke to my wife about this and she reminded me, "Eric, that's 150 people with clean water."
Everyday I'm grateful for her and the things she teaches me and how she brings perspective to me. I also looked on the website and saw that there were some donations made directly to the cause.
So as the end of the month is coming, I want to thank everyone who did purchase my books. Family Humanitarian Experience is a great organization. If you have some extra change kicking around and you can donate to their water projects, it will make a huge impact in the lives of the people in Africa! Remember about a dollar per person to have clean drinking water for their lifetime. Thank you for all the service you are giving in your communities and homes!

Buy a Book Save a Life (Week 2)
So January has started, and it's a tough time to do a project like this, but I've still seen some great things happening, and the posts and videos have been shared several times. So first thank you to everyone who has donated, bought a book, or helped to spread the word!
For week 2, I had this great idea to show how important water is, and how easy it is to get clean drinking water in some parts of the world, but unfortunately, I had this idea on pretty much the coldest week of the year! Check out what happened!

While writing this, I have the approximate data for the first four days of January. It's about 25 books that have sold. That's pretty good. At that rate I'll sell about 200 books this month, but we have a long way to go to raise the money needed for the drill. Please share this so we can really give a nice donation to the village drill project at the end of the month.

Buy a Book Save a Life
It's January, so it's on!
I put together this video sharing what I'm doing for January to help raise money to get clean drinking water. All the money I make off book sales for the month of January, I am donating to Family Humanitarian Experience (FHe) for their water project. The goal is to raise the $18,000 they need to get the portable well-drilling equipment they need.
With that equipment, it will reduce the cost of getting clean drinking water to villages in Africa, and it will make it possible for some remote regions where the lager drilling units cannot access. Bringing Clean Water (Buy a Book, Save a Life)
This past December, as with all Decembers, there have been a lot of efforts to raise some funds to help provide for those in need. People come together to provide for local families, and when possible we unite to help those farther away who have needs. There is a special spirit that we feel this time of year that makes us want to give a little more, and be a little more. It makes us more happy, it brings us together and it shows us what we can do when we are at our best.
This November and December I saw something that made me want to do more than just put some money into a bucket at the local grocery story, or pick out a present for a family in need. A non-profit company, Family Humanitarian Experience (FHe) set out to raise $18,000 to purchase equipment that will allow them to drill wells in remote areas of the world that are out of reach of the larger well drilling trucks. This video shows what they want to do in an amazing way, please take a few minutes to watch it.As of today (December 19th), they are short in raising the money by quite a bit. Today the website (here) says that they have raised $5,563 or about 31% of what they need for this equipment. I don't have $12,437 to give them to make up the difference, but I do have a voice, and a talent that I want to lend to this program.
I decided that in the Month of January (Poverty Awareness Month) I'm going to donate 100% of what I make off my book sales to help them get their well drilling equipment. If we can get this equipment, it will quickly reduce the cost of getting clean drinking water to remote areas.
The cost per person on average to get clean drinking water for their entire lifetime is less than $0.75. When you purchase one of my Kindle books at regular price, I earn about $0.75. What this means is for each book of mine that you purchase in the month of January, you will be getting a great book, but you will also be providing clean drinking water for a person for his/her entire lifetime. What a gift!
Please help spread the word to anyone you know who might like a good read, and if you're not interested in the kinds of books I write, you can also go directly to the website (here) and make a donation. I have worked with this company for several years and one of the great things with this company is that the owners/founders volunteer their time so 100% of what we raise will go directly to the project.
I don't know what will happen in January, but I think we can make up the difference if we spread the word and work together. So Share, Tweet, Post, Re-post, and like.

Book Review: Blood Bound by B. Griffin
Blood Bound by B. GriffinMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book! It is definitely written for a Middle Grade level, which means it's a clean fantasy read, which I like!
This book has four main characters, a noble born thief, an orc, a mage, and an archer. While there were two major plot lines going on, I expected them to come together and perhaps make a team that could go on future adventures together. That's the way I thought this book would go, then it turned and had a completely different ending. I don't know that it was a traditional 'twist' ending, but it was not what I was expecting, and I like being surprised.
My favorite character was Mal, the orc. After the first chapter, I thought the story would revolve around him, and in a way I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see more of him, but overall a very good book. Highly recommend!

Thanksgiving Sale! (And a quick update)
I realized that I haven't done much of an update in a while and I wanted to give everyone a bit of an overview on what is to come and some exciting things that are on their way, oh ya and an AMAZING SALE for Thanksgiving!
Writing in Progress
1. Mordyar's Story (still untitled) The chapter at the end of The Changing showed a bit of a glimpse into one project that I'm working on a lot lately. The story of Mordyar. It's a little behind schedule but first draft should be done in December. This stand alone book is going to be quite an amazing adventure and should add to the Kingdom of Denall books.
2. New Fantasy Book (also untitled) in a totally different world from the Kingdom of Denall. This new world has a fun and original magic system that is only available to the upper class. In this way they keep the peasants under control and completely dependent on them. Until now. This book is in the editing phase and might actually come out before Mordyar's story depending on how long edits take etc.
Either way there are two fantasy books on the verge of going to edits that I am very excited to get out into your hands.

1. Mordyar's Story (still untitled) The chapter at the end of The Changing showed a bit of a glimpse into one project that I'm working on a lot lately. The story of Mordyar. It's a little behind schedule but first draft should be done in December. This stand alone book is going to be quite an amazing adventure and should add to the Kingdom of Denall books.
2. New Fantasy Book (also untitled) in a totally different world from the Kingdom of Denall. This new world has a fun and original magic system that is only available to the upper class. In this way they keep the peasants under control and completely dependent on them. Until now. This book is in the editing phase and might actually come out before Mordyar's story depending on how long edits take etc.
Either way there are two fantasy books on the verge of going to edits that I am very excited to get out into your hands.
