Game to Movie

Movies inspired by games face several unique challenges. There is an existing audience that must be served. These are the core fans and most of them are going to go see this film (even if it’s directed by Uwe Boll). I’d like to believe some films are made for game fans, to broaden the experience of the game and to celebrate the stories and characters we love. (It’s probably all about money, but whatever…)

Then there is the new audience: folks who don’t game and those who might have heard some...

A Family for Felix and Zed

I created Sim!Felix and Sim!Zed last year to celebrate two years of Chaos Station. I had so much fun playing the guys in a contemporary setting and couldn’t get over how much like their story counterparts they were. I selected their traits, so it shouldn’t have been as surprising as it was to see them acting like Felix and Zed. It was the little things. The stuff they did when I wasn’t watching over their shoulder. Their reactions. And the way their relationship blossomed out of the friendshi...

Romancing the Game: My Digital Loves

I didn’t even know romance was a thing in games until Alistair Theirin gave my Warden a rose. I had suspected he was sweet on her up until then, but that one gesture was above and beyond what I had experienced before – which was a big fat nothing because I didn’t know romance was a thing in games. I’d either missed a cue (I suck at flirting) or was too busy lining up a headshot to notice the availability of the character standing next to mine… or understand their intent.

Dragon Age: Origins c...

May You Live in Interesting Times, a We Heart You! Interview

When We Heart You! Magazine last chatted with Henry Auttenberg and Marc Winnamore, they’d just been rescued from the side of the road in upstate New York where they’d spent six hours trapped in a rental car during the Christmas Eve blizzard. Five months later, they’re living together in Boston. Aw! I love a happy ever after.

*Henry and Marc look at each other, and away, both a little pink-cheeked*

WHY: I understand you had another couple of interesting dates between then and now.

Henry: You...

How I’d Like to Die

This past Saturday, my husband and I enjoyed lunch at a café we’ve only ever visited for dessert. I knew they had a menu of something other than ice cream and I’ve heard good things about the sandwiches. In the mood for something new—and when it comes to food, “something new” is fully half of my mood—I suggested we give it a try.

After finishing the first half of my sandwich—a baguette with turkey, bacon, avocado, mayonnaise and alfalfa sprouts—I sat back, patted my stomach and said, “If I di...

#FirstLineFriday: Scratch Track by Eli Lang

#FirstLineFriday is a new feature for my blog. It’s a series I’ve been thinking about for some time and I hope to use it to highlight a book every month or so that has an amazing first line.

We all know how important first impressions are, and as a writer, I spend a lot of time sweating over that first line. Not only do I want to hook my reader, but I want my first line to say something about the character, or the story. It needs to be relevant. It also needs to set the tone for things to com...

Flash Fiction: “Dad’s Side of the Family” and “Falling”

One of my favourite aspects of flash fiction is the chance to explore another story for a while without having to commit. The world-building happens on the fly, while you’re writing, and the characters inhabit only that moment, or those moments during which the story happens. It’s like visiting another world for just a little while.

My flash fiction tends to fall into one of two categories: a peek at something bigger (or another idea for the Big Book of Ideas) or something that feels complete...
