Little fact about French because I just learned that
The accent circonflexe (^) exists in French words to replace the “s” that no longer exists but used to be there in older French.
For example: fenêtre used to be fenestre
It is still possible to see the “s” at times in family words like “défenestrer”.
knowing this, « être » becomes much more regular :
être → estre (es, est, sommes, ê[s]tes, sont ; ser-)some French derivations become clearer :
fenêtre → défenestrer → L. fenestra
fête → festival
hôpital → hospitaliser (E. hospital, ise)
intérêt → intéressant (E. interest, -ing)
ancêtre → ancestral (E. ancestor, -ral)
arrêt → arrestation
épître → épistolaire (E. epistle)some English cognates become more obvious :
hôtel → hostel (E. ‘hotel’ borrowed from French)
forêt → forest (tipp to remember ^ goes on the ‹e›)
bête → beast
côte → coast
honnête → honest
pâte, pâté → pasta, paste
quête → quest
enquête → inquest
tempête → tempest
vêtements → vestments (ie. clothes)
baptême → baptismsometimes, the acute replaces the circumfex for phonetic reasons :
ḗcole → escole → L. schola (E. school)
ḗtranger → estrangier (E. stranger)
ḗtudier → estudier (E. study)
dḗgoûtant → desgoustant (E. disgusting)
dḗbarquer → desembarquer (E. disembark)
rḗpondre → respondre (E. respond)
rḗpublique → L. res publicaAlso, where « c → ch » (eg. cantare→ chanter) :
château → castel (E. castle)
pêcher → L. piscareand « w → gu » (eg. war→ guerre ; warden→ guardian) :
guêpe → E. wasp ! (this is my n° 1 favourite cognate)bonus etymologies :
tête → L. testa
fantôme → L. phantasma (E. ‘phantom’ borrowed from French)
Pâques → Gk. pásxa → Am. pésaḫ (E. Paschal)Also just be aware that the circumflex has some other uses too, like distinguishing « sur — sûr » or « dû » and the vowel quality in « âge »
“guêpe → E. wasp ! (this is my n° 1 favourite cognate)”
You know what w→g cognate is, IMO, even cooler? “Garou” and “werewolf.” Frankish wari wulf (compare OE werewulf) became warous, which became garou(l) and finally loup-garou (a redundant expression, basically “wolf-werewolf,” which undoubtedly stuck because of the irresistible rhyme).

We’d knit. There are photos of Nick, all muscular in leather pants with his head shaved, knitting a scarf. He made a ton of stuff. He made all our Christmas presents. I think Tom got in on it. But he dropped a lot of stitches. Not a world class knitter in my opinion.
- Charlize Theron in Empire, June 2015.
I’d often go to yoga and - you’ll laugh - Charlize Theron taught me how to knit. So there was a lot of variety. There are even a few photos of me in leather pants and war paint, knitting. I’d get really mad if I lost my place… These days, I don’t even have to look down anymore. By the end of the year I’d made some knitted Christmas presents. And: I was much better than Tom Hardy.
- Nicholas Hoult brags about his knitting prowess. *g*
I so love how all the cast got into ‘arts & crafts’ on the set of Mad Max Fury Road. It should be a special behind the scenes featurette!
(Photos thanks to fangirlingicizing - I love that Tom did get a few moments worth for his beard in the film. Nothing to do with knitting, though.)

So my therapist said something awhile back and it’s really stuck with me.
I was talking about the stupid things I had done in high school. How the stories I wrote were stupid and how all I ever wanted to draw was anime shit (which was stupid) and how immature I could be, etc etc etc.
and she was like “Why are you so determined to beat up on Little Maggie?”
It took me off guard, I was like “what do you mean?”
“Why do you keep saying Little Maggie is stupid? You say she was stupid and immature but wasn’t she just a teenager? Do you not like who you were as a teenager?”
I shrugged and was like “I think teenage me was very creative and was probably just having fun and being a teenager…”
“So why beat up on her and call her stupid and embarrassing?”
“I dunno, because I guess now I’ve learned a lot.”
“But she was young. She didn’t know. I’m just telling you this because if you keep beating up on Little Maggie, you have to remember that she grows up to be you. When you put bruises and scars on Little Maggie, you’re leaving all the healing for Big Maggie. Your insecurity about who you were as a child is going to come through into your adulthood. Be nice to Little Maggie.”
And I’d never really thought of that before? It seems status quo to just… hate who you used to be for not knowing enough, but that’s totally illogical. Of course a younger version of you doesn’t know what you know and can’t act with the wisdom that you act.
And even if Little Maggie was writing silly stories about her friends while ripping off anime and drawing her own “manga” and being immature and goofy, she was having fun, she was being creative, she was enjoying the things she liked and she wasn’t hurting anyone.
She’s part of my past and hating her is hating the foundation of who I eventually became.
Just food for thought.

Seriously, can someone explain to me why DC Bombshells isn’t how these characters are in the DCU? I mean, sure some of it would have to be changed as we’re not in WWII and the aesthetic doesn’t entirely work but, really, these characters are almost universally the best versions of themselves currently in print. (Harper is pretty awesome in Batman & Robin Eternal as well.)
This is as close as I may ever get to the Batgirls book I really, really want. And you have Bette Kane, Harper Row, Alysia Yeoh, Kathy Duquesne, Nell Little and Felicity Smoak as Batgirls - protecting Gotham. Bette takes over Kane Industries and begins to build houses for all of the war refugees.
And that’s just what is happening in Gotham!
Wonder Woman is standing up for prisoners of war and doing the hard ugly parts that people don’t talk about. She’s showing compassion to her enemies and saving lives. Kate Kane’s ex-girlfriend Renee was a rebel fighter in the Spanish Civil War and her current is chief of police in Gotham. Catwoman is a bored Italian Baroness manipulating society for ‘good’. Stargirl and Supergirl are sisters, growing up together and growing stronger for it. Mera is just fun. Waller is in control and is as she should always be in all respects. Zatanna is of mixed Jewish and Romani heritage.
And John Constantine is a bunny.
