Some fairy tales may be 6000 years old

GUYS THIS IS AMAZING

SERIOUSLY

6000 YEARS

STORIES THAT ARE OLDER THAN CIVILIZATIONS

STORIES THAT WERE TOLD BY PEOPLE SPEAKING LANGUAGES WE NO LONGER KNOW

STORIES TOLD BY PEOPLE LOST TO THE VOID OF TIME

STORIES

@siavahdainthemoon This is relevant to your interests

@kibumunnie this is absolutely relevant to my interests, I thank you for thinking of me

I’d like to add this to the pile of evidence for the people who get all “but HISTORICAL ACCURACY” when it comes to whiteness and fairy tales. Because apparently some of these stories could nearly predate the ability of human beings to evolve light skin, and definitely are older than the ability to digest animal milk.

Will we see the discourse goalposts move to pre-historical accuracy?

Snarkiness aside, I really wish the disciplines would communicate more in matters like these, because I think that the implications for our greater cultural consciousness regarding human mythology and modern sociological structures are kinda cool?

so i went and read the study because i was curious what these stories actually are and the data they use comes specifically from indo-european speaking societies so it’s not a worldwide thing. but the method they used is pretty amazing.

anyway, the only story they could confidently trace back to the bronze age (the bronze age!!) is ‘the smith and the devil’. three other stories (’the boy steals the ogre’s treasure’, ‘the animal bride’ and ‘the grateful animals’) have a +50% likelihood of being part of the proto-indo-european story corpus.

and here are the other stories that can be traced at least one level up from current european languages:

This is holographic projection of a whale. It is a photographic process that produces images, thanks to the differences between 2 laser beams. These images are projected on to a gym using a special camera. There is not a drop of water in the gym, let alone a whale.

Flippin cool. That is all.

every time i listen to “you’re a mean one mr. grinch” i can’t help but sit there and think “what did the grinch do to hurt you?” because dude just stands there for 2 minutes and 58 seconds and drags the grinch into the dirt

he stole christmas, kayla! stop with your #notallgrinches propaganda!

you know what if someone told me i was a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce i’d probably be bitter enough to steal christmas too

Interestingly, though The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is narrated by Boris Karloff, the big musical number is sung by the late Thurl Ravenscroft - an American voice actor better known as the voice of Tony the Tiger.

My headcanon is that the Grinch and Tony the Tiger had a bad breakup, and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is the resulting breakup song.

Did this really HAVE to be the first thing I see when I opened up Tumblr?

Yes.

oh god theres art

@altadude you know what must be done.

ive been avoiding reblogging this honestly but just. What the fuck. What the fuck tumblr

I still laugh when I think about the fact that the Ministry of Magic employs people to come up with explanations for magic-related incidents for Muggles.

I need a mockumentary in the style of Parks & Rec about the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee sitting around a table brainstorming excuses as a floating quill and roll of parchment record everything. The Muggleborns on the committee constantly look into the camera like they’re on The Office.

I don’t think you understand how much I want to be magical just so I could work for this office

“Oh yes, ma’am, you were hallucinating. Giants don’t exist.”

“No, no, you simply saw a man riding a horse, don’t be preposterous. A man can’t be a horse.”

“Come now, be reasonable. Everybody knows a Ford Anglia can’t… can’t fly…… Excuse me, I need to call a colleague of mine to ask him about, ah, something entirely unrelated.”

Addition: imagine being the cousin of a muggle-born wizard or witch who works for this office. You work at HuffPo or CNN and every so often you get a text saying “just say it was northern lights”

and your stress migraine kicks in, because whatever just happened, it’s definitely not going to pass for northern lights

AURORA BOREALIS?!

En Anglais, on ne dit pas “quatre vingt dix neuf”, on dit “ninety nine” qu'on pourrait traduire comme “Hurr durr, regardez mois, j'ai un système de numérotation fonctionnel” et je crois que c'est magnifique.

reasons why Halloween is the best holiday:

you are not obligated to visit your relatives
you are not obligated to get gifts for anybody
people will give you candy for absolutely no reason other than it’s Halloween
it’s the only day of the year when it’s socially acceptable to go out in public dressed as a penguin

I finally understand about Americans and Halloween
