The Belgrave Legacy: Meet Dylan Stone

The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series: Day 12Welcome to the Day 12 of The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series. The series spans from September 20, 2016) to November 1, 2016. Each week, there will be a theme with 2 blog posts (Tuesday and Thursday).

This week's theme is Secondary Characters.

Here are the past posts, in case you missed any of them:
The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series ArchiveThe ExDylan Stone probably has one of the smallest amount of screen time of all the characters with back stories in this story. Initially, he was supposed to have even less, but a early reader pointed out how strange it was to have someone walk on with an implied past with Fawn, then walk off so quickly. I took that note and made the revision, and I'm glad I did. He now appears earlier in the story (in Part 2) before his initial debut in Part 3.Unlike Ivy, I Dylan came to me named and as a werewolf from the start. I don't watch Teen Wolf, and everyone knows Jacob Black from the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, but my inspiration for making him a werewolf was the protective nature of his relationship with Fawn in the story. And for inspiration, I drew from the appearance of Jacob, and the steadfastness of Luke Garroway from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

I do wish I could have worked more of his life in New Orleans into the story, but as one of the more minor secondary characters, I couldn't sacrifice the space. However, I am considering the idea of writing a short story about him that I hope will give readers more of a sense as to why Fawn dated him, and how they remained friends afterwards.About The Belgrave LegacyThe Belgrave Legacy by Zara HoffmanTitle: The Belgrave Legacy

The Belgrave Legacy: Meet Ivy Moore

The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series: Day 11Welcome to the Day 11 of The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series. The series spans from September 20, 2016) to November 1, 2016. Each week, there will be a theme with 2 blog posts (Tuesday and Thursday).

This week's theme is Secondary Characters.

Here are the past posts, in case you missed any of them:
The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series ArchiveThe Best FriendEveryone needs a best friend, right? But since Caleb's life has been a solitary one based on lies for more than a century and a half, giving him one proved to be a bit of a challenge. Coming up with the perfect idea for Fawn's best friend, though, was easy as pie (though I don't understand that expression at all).I already had God, the Devil, a long line of witches, a male witch (or "warlock"), and a dark angel. I didn't want Ivy to be human because I knew she'd get caught in the crossfire if she didn't know anything about the paranormal world. She came into my head named, but figuring out what type of Supernatural she would be was a little bit more tricky. It wasn't until I settled on her being a confident, sexual person did I decide she should be a siren.

The reason I call her a siren, because mermaid brings up ideas of Ariel, or the jerks who try to drown Wendy in Disney's Peter Pan. And succubae just seems to scare everyone because it's too sexual for a woman, so obviously she's a predator. So, siren it is (and not the super crazy creepy ones from CW's Supernatural's S4E14 "Sex and Violence."

If you want to see my twist on sirens, preorder The Belgrave Legacy and subscribe below to meet Ivy sooner than the publication date.About The Belgrave LegacyThe Belgrave Legacy by Zara HoffmanTitle: The Belgrave Legacy

Genre: SciFi Romance

Add on Goodreads Buy on Amazon Buy on Kindle She thought she had the toughest job in Rescue—until the day she had to convert a pirate into a hero.

Interstellar Rescue "conductor" Rayna Carver is deep undercover on a slave ship bound for an isolated region of space when the ship is attacked by pirates. Her liberator is Captain Sam Murphy, a man known in the spacer bars to love only profit, adventure and women.

But Murphy hates a few things, too, chief among them slavers. Will it be enough to gain his help for Rayna’s mission—ferreting out two spies bent on sabotaging an arms factory to turn the tide in an alien civil war?
Excerpt“What the hell do you think you’re doing? This is a restricted area.”

Still clinging to the grab bar, Rayna glanced up at the captain’s face. His expression didn’t match the censure in his words. The furrows between his brows didn’t look like anger, but she couldn’t quite interpret their true meaning.

“For a pirate ship, you sure have a lot of rules.”

“Discipline is necessary no matter what kind of ship it is.” His lips curved upwards. “Now answer my question.”Sam Murphy really was a fine-looking man, a dangerously fine-looking man, with those green eyes and a face that belonged in holovids rather than on the deck of a real ship. But damned if he was going to back her up, even in zero G.

“You saw what I was doing; I was working out. The ribs have healed—almost. I didn’t think I’d have to ask permission, especially since I was back here with the waste processors.”

Murphy leaned in closer. In spite of herself, Rayna inhaled and took him in. God, he smelled good—like … the first breath of fresh air dirtside after months on a ship. For a second she was lost, drifting as surely as if she had let go of her mooring on the hull.

“This is my ship, Little Bit.” His voice was a seductive purr. “You need permission for everything.”

Heat flashed from the top of her head to the bottoms of her feet. Rayna meant to shout, but her voice came out in a matching sultry whisper. “Why you puffed up, self-righteous, arrogant—” She got her hormones in check and started over. “Control seems to be your middle name, Murphy. Well, let me tell you something: I joined Rescue because Independence is mine.”

“Do I have to remind you you’re a guest on my ship?” His expression had tightened into a smoky scowl. “The one place I have plenty of room onboard is the brig—maybe you’d like accommodations there.” His eyes held hers like he meant it, but a muscle jumped in his jaw. His tell, she realized. He wanted something quite different for her. That heat flashed through her once again, and this time she was certain it had nothing to do with anger.

Damn it.

“All right, yeah, I saw the big ‘Keep Out’ signs. But every other square centimeter of space on this tug is occupied. I needed a workout, and zero G is a good place to get started. I didn’t think anyone would be back here.”

His expressive face changed yet again, the hard lines around his mouth and eyes going soft as the tension drained from him. “Any day but today you’d have been right.”

“What’s different about today?”

He scanned the empty hull space before he answered. “The ship’s on lockdown; I’ve ordered a full security sweep in hull space.”

Understanding dawned. All that bluster was because Murphy was feeling protective. She looked up at him and, yep, there it was, shining from those eyes, despite his stern refusal to smile.

But just because her body responded instantly with eager anticipation didn’t mean her mind should be onboard with this program. Seriously, how would it ever work between them? He was a pirate, for chrissake. According to him, she was an interfering bleeding heart. The only thing they had in common was a disregard for authority, and they would never even agree on the reasons for that.

Oh, but, damn, he smelled so good. He kept floating closer, and she was so tired. She wanted to let go and settle into those arms.

“You miscalculated.” His arm was around her shoulders again, his lips against her ear.

“What do you mean?” Her protest came out in a breathy murmur.

“You’re exhausted. You weren’t ready for this much exertion.” He was so close, so warm, encouraging her to let go. “I bet you didn’t ask Doc Berta for permission either.”

She finally gave up and transferred her hold to him, arms and legs wrapping around his hard body. He hooked both feet around the handholds below them, anchored one hand and used the other to clasp her to him; she was so small in comparison, his arm stretched all the way across her lower back.

She looked up at him, lips inches from his. “I don’t ask permission for anything.”Giveawaya Rafflecopter giveaway About the Author Picture Donna lives on 44 beautiful mountain acres in Marshall, NC, near Asheville, with her husband and two talkative cats. The Belgrave Legacy: Massachusetts

The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series: Day 10Welcome to the Day 10 of The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series. The series spans from September 20, 2016) to November 1, 2016. Each week, there will be a theme with 2 blog posts (Tuesday and Thursday).

This week's theme is Location in The Belgrave Legacy.

Here are the past posts, in case you missed any of them:
The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series ArchiveMassachusettsMassachusetts is where most of the novel takes place, whether it be Fawn's college or Salem. The other locations in The Belgrave Legacy are Manhattan (see the last post in this blog series), Heaven, and Hell. I could have written about Heaven and Hell in this or the next post, but I decided that those are better-kept secrets for people who read my book (by preordering below and/or subscribing below to receive Part 1 for free).

Anyway, let's get back to the main focus of this post:Fawn's college: I never name it in The Belgrave Legacy because I originally couldn't decide whether I wanted to model her university after my own college, or the my mother's alma mater. And while I describe the great lawn much like the one at my school, I embellish the setting to fit how I imagine it, making Fawn's school almost completely a figment of my imagination. My focus on her magic lessons on campus basically renders the specific location of the school irrelevant because her training either takes place outside on the lawn or inside in her dorm room—two general, universal places that can move with the reader's imagination.Salem: I included this location for obvious reasons. I mean, how can you have a magic story in Massachusetts without paying homage to the awful witch trials of 1692-3? My answer: you can't. Although this place only features as a short field trip during one of Fawn's magic lessons, with some unfortunate after effects, I would be remiss in not including such an important location in magic's history in America.Have you ever been to Massachusetts? The Belgrave Legacy: New York

The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series: Day 9Welcome to the Day 9 of The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series. The series spans from September 20, 2016) to November 1, 2016. Each week, there will be a theme with 2 blog posts (Tuesday and Thursday).

This week's theme is Locations in The Belgrave Legacy.

Here are the past posts, in case you missed any of them:
The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series Archive"Manhattan... the greatest city in the world!"If you've been living under a rock for the past year, you might not know that the title of this section is a lyric from "The Schuyler Sisters" a song from the smash-hit musical Hamilton, written by (and formerly starring) In The Heights creator and star, Lin Manuel Miranda. I almost went with "The city that doesn't sleep" from the classic song "New York, New York," but figured I stay in touch with the times.
Anyway, one of the most common pieces of writing advice is "write what you know." And given I live in NYC, Manhattan is a pretty good place to start with The Belgrave Legacy. There are only a few key locations in New York because Fawn spends most of the book away at college in Massachusetts (which will be Thursday's post). Anyway, let's get this thing started!Fawn's childhood home: The Dakota building. Known as former home of John Lennon (he was killed in front of the building), and as a beautiful apartment building for the super rich people on the Upper West Side. Only a few scenes throughout the book take place here. Most of them at the end of The Belgrave Legacy, but the first chapter is also set here where Fawn has her first—and quite memorable—experience with magic. You can read that in Part 1 by subscribing below.Central Park, more specifically Cleopatra's Needle (the obelisk): In the scene mentioned above (where Fawn interacts with magic for the first time), her mother mentions ley lines, which are invisible energy lines that are connected by large pillars throughout the world and are hotbeds for supernatural activity. This has been backed up by a Discovery documentary (I'm blanking on the name) which claims that not only Egyptian obelisks, but the pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge, Easter Island statues, and a certain mountain in China are all energy satellites (essentially creating ley lines). And of course, Ghostbusters references ley lines, as does The Vampire Diaries (the book series, not the TV show, where they call them "magical hotspots").  Whether or not you believe in this phenomenon (I can't even be sure I do), Cleopatra's Needle is a location in Manhattan that supposedly has ley lines intersecting from all over the place (including the Vatican). And what better place to put a final showdown between Supernaturals (people who aren't human, but aren't demons in The Belgrave Legacy—think of "downworlders" from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare) and demons?
What do you think of these two cool locations? Have you ever visited NYC and seen them? To see how my home city plays a part in The Belgrave Legacy, preorder it below and subscribe to start reading immediately. About The Belgrave LegacyThe Belgrave Legacy by Zara HoffmanTitle: The Belgrave Legacy

The Belgrave Legacy: Meet Lucifer

The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series: Day 8Welcome to the Day 8 of The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series. The series spans from September 20, 2016) to November 1, 2016. Each week, there will be a theme with 2 blog posts (Tuesday and Thursday).

This week's theme is Powerful Giants.

Here are the past posts, in case you missed any of them:The Belgrave Legacy Blog Series ArchiveMeet LuciferI'm going to come right out that my Lucifer is not a devil with horns, nor is he a guy with a burning face (à la the CW show Supernatural). The man I pictured as my fallen angel, king of Hell, is a handsome devil. In more literal terms, I'm talking about Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore on the CW show The Vampire Diaries.

Unlike my God, I make my Devil more sympathetic than is orthodox. But, like the fallibility of my God doesn't make him wrong, humanizing Lucifer doesn't excuse his awful actions throughout mythology (yes, I'm calling the Bible mythology) and my novel, The Belgrave Legacy. My treatment of both powerful giants only makes them more well-rounded characters rather than the embodiments of two opposing extremes.
Because, it turns out that Lucifer and God have a complicated past. They didn't just appear as rivals without any backstory here. And while the Devil is still a corrupting force and none of his actions are one I would condone, the does have reasons for his vengeful mission of taking over the Earth and conquering Heaven for himself.

I can't really say more without spoiling a chapter in Part 2 of The Belgrave Legacy, but if you'd like to get the whole story, you can preorder my book now. And, if you're impatient for this story (like I am when there's a book I really want to read), then you can subscribe to my mailing list and receive Part 1 immediately! Part 1 includes a glimpse at how God and Lucifer interact, how they came to make the bargain that propels the plot, and how the Devil ropes Caleb Pearce into doing his dirty work yet again.

Book Review: The Fix-Up by Kendall Ryan

My ReviewWhen my eARC popped up on my Kindle App, I jumped right in even though I should have been sleeping. And man, Sterling's story does not disappoint. If I liked Noah from the Hitched books, I loved Sterling. It's probably because he's British. But I definitely appreciate the author's penchant for writing guys who know they like the girl from the (almost) get-go. It's a nice change from a lot of the other romance novels out there. But where I really liked Sterling, because why wouldn't I?, I had more than a few issues with Camryn annoyed me, a little more than I would have liked. In the beginning, she was fine, but when her emotions start running away from her in the middle of the brilliant (please note my sarcasm) idea of having a "speed dating meets The Bachelor" (as Sterling puts it), I lose my patience with her. Due to her inability to control her emotions, she lets someone through that leads to her being even more upset than necessary. I know that romantic comedies rely on errors such as that, but these just seem so unprofessional that it's hard for me to believe it wasn't out of character for her.

Apart from that one main episode, I totally bought their relationship, loved that we got to see Noah and Olivia helping both sides out, and their dates were swoon worthy. And the sex was hot (duh).

My tempting and very alpha friend Sterling Quinn is someone I consider off-limits.

It's not just that we're friends, he's also cocky, confident, and British, which means he's a walking aphrodisiac.

But lately he's been giving me the look. You know the one. When he thinks I'm not paying attention, and his gaze lingers for too long.

When we start working together, that's when the sexual tension between us gets so thick, I want to hack through it with a machete. I want to make all these deep feelings I've harbored for him disappear, because there's no way this can end well.

The lines between business and pleasure become irrevocably blurred, and I'm stuck between a rock, and Sterling's very, very hard place.

Rather than keep a level head about our growing attraction, Sterling wants to go all in, showing me just how explosive we can be together.

But I've been around long enough to know that this British bad boy is more than my heart can handle. I'm not about to be cast aside like yesterday's underwear when he's done having fun.

Sterling’s never been told no, and he's not about to put his ego aside and play by my rules. But I never thought he'd fight so dirty.
