Monstrous Short – The Morning After
The Morning After
Ari
Monstrous
It was over. She’d done it.
Ari’d given the supernatural community a party they’d never forget.
Nudging the limp form at the other end of the couch with her foot, Ari waited until Ella grumbled something that sounded like a what. Stifling the laughter that threatened to come out at the harpy’s ill-concealed irritation at being forced to interact with her, Ari nudged her again. “Do you know where Michael and Liam went?”
A rustling of wings and Ella lifted her head to stare blearily at her. “No. Do you?”
Obviously not, silly harpy, or she wouldn’t have asked. “Nope,” Ari chirped, watching her friend wince and lower her head back down at her cheery tone.
Apparently, they hadn’t cleaned out the county of supernaturally made moonshine like Ari thought. A few jars had put in an appearance toward the end of the evening and Ella had—unfortunately for her—partaken of a wee bit too much.
Ella’s hair, Ari decided, looked like she’d been hitting the sheets all night with her mate. Vigorously.
The brief glimpse she’d gotten of it had been equal parts horrifying and fascinating. The one side defied gravity.
Trying once again to keep her laughter in, Ari nudged her again with her foot. “Do you want me to get you something for your head?”
Ella grunted something Ari took to be affirmative. Right. Ella had never had the fantastic experience of an epic night out at a bar followed by an even more epic hangover.
After the first time she’d tried Luz’s mom’s moonshine, Ari had sworn she’d never again drink enough to get hung over.
And here she was, not hung over.
MAN, she knew how to stick to her promises, didn’t she?
Leaving her suffering friend draped over the couch, Ari went to the kitchen and started the biggest, blackest pot of coffee she thought Ella would be able to stomach.
As she waited for it to brew, she looked the kitchen over with a critical eye. Not as neat as Liz usually kept it, but hardly the mess it could have been with all the people in and out of the house last night.
As long as no one had found the box of cinnamon rolls she’d stashed in the pantry for this morning, she’d consider the evening a success.
But if someone had found those precious babies…
Dragging one of the kitchen chairs into the pantry, Ari climbed up and groped on the top shelf until her fingers found the familiar contours of the bakery box.
Perfect. Wonderful.
She wouldn’t have to hunt anyone down and offer them up as a blood appeasement to the old gods.
She’d gone all out, too. Which meant Ella wasn’t just getting a steaming cup of strong as heck coffee. She was also getting one of the best breakfast foods known to man or monsters.
Cradling the box like the treasure it was, Ari climbed back down. Prolonging the agony of not opening the lid and taking a deep, cinnamon-laced breath of her goodies, she carefully placed the box on the counter and put the chair away.
By then, there was enough of the magical java-juice to put together a cup for both her and Ella. A splash of cream and a touch of sugar.
Glancing toward the room housing her suspiciously silent friend, Ari added another spoonful of sugar to Ella’s cup. The harpy was going to need all the help she could get this morning.
Only then did she open the lid of the bakery box and breathe deep.
Hot damn. That right there was a cure for anything that ailed you.
Flying high on both the sugary treat in her hands and the satisfaction of a party that went off without a hitch, Ari balanced the two mugs of coffee and the box of cinnamon rolls on her hands and went out to give Ella the absolute best cure for her misery.
Because that’s what friends did.
The End

Monstrous Series Short – Unexpected
Unexpected
Ari
Monstrous
Ari didn’t quite know what to think of her party.
Despite the setbacks, things were fine. Better than fine, really. They were going great.
The puddle in the middle of the dance floor was gone. The lack of moonshine didn’t seem to be inhibiting any the guests. The various supernaturals who’d shown up were all behaving, even those she hadn’t personally invited.
It was weird.
Ari kept expecting something to happen to make everything fall apart.
Any minutes now.
Any. Minute.
Casting her steely eyed glare in her friends’ direction, she saw Akakios standing stock still against the wall. He’d been so terribly apologetic about the accident that had caused the loss of their moonshine stores, she kind of understood why he looked like he’d rooted himself in place. Liz had cried when she’d seen the accidental mess and Akakios hated when his mate cried.
So now he was standing as still as a statue, his little mate hovering beside him, her cautious gaze darting around the room with something akin to confused horror.
Right.
Ari knew how Liz felt.
The party was going great. Liz had managed to make a huge chunk of the food she’d been planning for the menu after her cry.
Things were going great.
Ari just couldn’t figure out why everyone had shown up in costume.
This wasn’t a Halloween party.
Well, it was now, but that hadn’t been how she’d intended it.
But people had started arriving wearing capes and plastic fangs and fake werewolf heads and Ari honestly didn’t know what to do about it.
Three of Michael’s werewolf friends had coaxed Lon and Ivy into playing a cake walk game. Ari couldn’t figure out where they’d gotten the cake they were holding up as the prize.
A flash of pink caught her eye and Ari frowned harder. Okay, so they’d gone to Hobbs’ Bakery (the BEST bakery, in Ari’s humble opinion) and brought their own cake.
That was nice of them.
A little weird, really, but nice.
A lanky form draped in sheet, the eye holes focused forward, walked past and Ari tracked it until it joined Luz and her small group of friends.
A costume party.
Okay. Right. Not what she’d intended, but it worked.
It was just…weird.
With the exception of Cin, everybody in this room was a supernatural, it seemed redundant to dress up as a different type of supernatural.
But here they were.
And they looked like they were having a great time.
Blowing out a breath, Ari scanned the room for her mate. He’d disappeared not too long ago and she wanted to make sure he was doing okay with all these people hanging around.
Her Liam was a solitary creature normally. He put up with her need to have others around, but his default setting wasn’t surrounded by individuals he didn’t know.
The warm, comforting pressure of a tentacle coiled around her wrist a moment before Liam’s big body stepped into hers and Ari felt her tension leech away.
“This is an interesting party, love,” her darling man murmured in her ear.
Interesting was definitely the right word.
“Everybody’s dressed up,” she said in a stage whisper. “I feel like I missed something.”
“They all seem to be having fun.” Liam tilted her chin up so he could see her face. “Are you?”
Was she? Yeah. Maybe.
The DJ Siri had recommended started playing Monster Mash and everybody on the dance floor threw up their hands and made a weirdly synced Whoo-Hoo-ing sound.
It was surreal.
It was hilarious, actually.
Monsters—actual, honest to god monsters—were grooving on her dance floor while dressed up as other monsters.
“I’m having a great time,” she said honestly.
It was bizarre. It wasn’t what she’d intended when she planned everything out, but it was fun. Well, it was funny.
So what if they weren’t serving ridiculously potent moonshine. So what if everyone came in costume.
Everybody was happy.
She’d seen more than a few couples disappear into the shadows. She’d heard a few gasps and moans that had nothing to do with the wildly gyrating bodies on the dance floor.
She was a matchmaking nymph. That sort of stuff was her bread and butter.
So, yeah. She was having a great time.
She’d accomplished what she set out to do. She’d given her friends a night to remember.
Her gaze slid to Akakios and Liz who were still standing pressed against the wall.
Now she just had to drag the last reluctant few into the circle of fun.
Sending a sassy smile to her beloved, Ari laced her fingers with him and made her determined way to were the minotaur and his mate were trying to blend in with the wall.
It was type to turn her nymphly charms on and really get this party started.
The End

It’s (almost) my birthday and I’m taking some (much-needed) downtime
It’s my birthday tomorrow (mark it down on your calendars for next year!) and I’m going to be a lazy person and take the week off. Kind of. I mean, I doubt I’ll be able to take the whole week off because my brain likes to do things, but I’m taking a few days at least.
That means there’s no Series Short this week.
HOWEVER, there are A LOT of old Series Shorts you can kick back and read or re-read if you need some quality Kelly Apple Character Time. (I should trademark that, shouldn’t I?)
So…Series Shorts. Check ’em out. They’ll be back next week so I can tie up the current mini-story arc and plan FUN, new things for my characters to do.

Monstrous Short – Famous Last Words
Famous Last Words
Ari
Monstrous
Ari wasn’t sure where things had exactly gone wrong with the evening, but she had a suspicion it had all started when Ella had uttered those famous last words to her yesterday.
What could possibly go wrong, Ari? We’ve got this in the bag.
An innocent question that had unfortunately saddled them with everything and anything of a problematic nature under the sun.
Somehow, Akakios had blundered into the room they were using for storage and shattered an entire crate of moonshine. Liz had burst into tears when she found out and fled the kitchen to hide out in their room.
Jerinth and Amanda had tried to clean things up, but Amanda had tripped over an unbroken bottle and given herself a nasty bump on the head. The medusa had insisted it was nothing, but the way Jerinth had paled when he saw the slow ooze of blood coming out of the shallow cut had Ari ordering them both out of the storage room and back to their cave to rest.
The thought of having to wrangle a massive supernatural snake-man if he fainted had made Ari feel a little light headed herself. Better to send them away before any collapsing happened.
Cin had offered to take over Liz’s kitchen duties until the sweet werewolf was feeling up to returning. Ari honestly thought that would work until she saw the menu Liz had been in the middle of whipping up.
It was…intimidating. Probably beyond delicious, but far too complex for either her or Cin to attempt on their own.
Or even not on their own.
Seriously, Liz could probably be standing over them telling them exactly what to do and they’d still manage to screw up what she had put together.
So they were scrapping the planned menu unless Liz decided to rejoin them and going with finger sandwiches and cut veggies.
The predators in the group would just have to deal.
All that had only been the beginning.
A quick check of the bar and dance floor had shown a massive puddle collecting right in the center of it. Ari had stared in disbelief at that for a solid minute before bellowing for Liam to come take care of things.
It turned out to be a minor issue, not the plumbing nightmare it could have been, which had probably been the only bright spot in the whole cursed day.
Somewhere around midnight, Ella had realized that it was her innocently spoken words that had caused all the mayhem and she’d been a nervous, apologetic wreck ever since. Michael had to drag her outside and talk her down from the brink of a panic attack.
Ari didn’t even blame poor Ella.
They really had had everything under control. Supernatural-made moonshine and lots of it. Regular alcohol and plenty of snacks to keep everybody going through the evening.
A gorgeous bar. A dance floor Ari wanted to shake her booty on.
IT HAD BEEN UNDER CONTROL.
Then Murphy, that dick, had dropped in and everything had fallen to shit.
“Everything that can go wrong, will.”
Screw that.
There was NOTHING that was going to ruin her planned evening.
NOTHING.
Not water on the floor. Not a complete loss of all the moonshine they’d had to beg off every supernatural who made some. Not Liz’s panic attack. Not Ella’s panic attack. Not Amanda’s head wound.
This was her night, dammit, and they were going to show all the monsters who had never been in a real bar the time of their lives.
So after shooing everyone but Liam away, Ari rolled up her sleeves and went to work.
This was going to be a night to remember for every one of her friends.
Even if it killed her.
The End

Monstrous Short – A Plan for Everything
A Plan for Everything
Ella
Monstrous
Because of her harpy heritage—wings aren’t easy to hide, you know—Ella had never been to a bar. Not the type Ari and Siri were so excited about, at least.
But their excitement was infectious and the idea of just hanging out while sipping an alcoholic beverage or two and possibly dragging Michael onto the dance floor to rub against him while dancing sounded like an insane amount of fun.
Before that could happen, however, they needed to get everything set up.
Liam and Jerinth had delivered the actual bar a few days ago. Then they’d smoothed out a portion of the ground outside to use as an extra gathering place. They’d brought in tables and chairs and all sorts of things Ella never would have thought of.
Most of it handmade.
Honestly, it was coming together beautifully.
She’d been tasked with finding enough alcohol to give the supernaturals who’d be attending at least a bit of a buzz.
That was…a little problematic.
Mostly because supernatural metabolisms were stupid fast and finding something strong enough in large enough quantities to let monsters get their drunk on wasn’t as easy as it sounded.
It turned out supernaturally brewed moonshine was pretty much the only thing that did it.
On the plus side, Michael and his college pack mates had a few contacts who she was negotiating with. The down side? They didn’t mind supplying the hooch, but they wanted an invite to the party in return.
All of them.
Twelve supernaturals of varying species all wanted to a free pass up to the house to the rocking bar party Ari had decided to put together.
Ari was going to agree to it, Ella knew. Ari wanted everything to be perfect and perfect meant having a fully stocked bar.
So they were adding another dozen people to their guest list.
Liz had given her a wide-eyed look when she’d told her and muttered darkly about making more food before hunching over a legal pad and adding to the ingredient list she’d been working on.
So, okay. Maybe things weren’t quite as doom and gloom as Ella kept thinking.
Dividing up the tasks made things easier. They just had to make sure they all communicated—clearly—so that nothing fell through the cracks.
Ella had the alcohol covered. Liz had the food. Siri had been called back home to deal with some family issues, so she was currently out of the task rotation. The cockatrice had sworn up and down that she’d be back in time to help out, but everyone knew how family could be.
Siri would definitely make it to the party, but she might not be able to get away before then.
The guys had all thrown themselves into helping get the house set up. All of them.
Even Max had been out there, using his impressive brain to help the others plan out how to use every square inch of space they’re allocated for Ari’s project.
This, Ella realized, was going to be fun. In typical Ari fashion, the nymph had thrown herself so whole-heartedly into her idea that there was no way it couldn’t be fun.
Friends, a few strangers, some booze, music, and dancing.
What could possibly go wrong?
The End

Looking Back on September
September, man. Why’d you slip by so quickly?
I say that, but I had the thrill of putting up Halloween decorations today and I looooooove my Halloween decorations so YAY!
Anywho. Things I did in September. Well, not a whole lot of writing. My day job has ramped up which means I have to plan out my time a little more stringently. Which is not a whole lot of fun, but so it goes.
That said, I did manage to release Monstrous Rogues (Monstrous Revelations #3) just under the end of the month wire. Which doesn’t mean anything, really, except Amazon was taking a while to approve it so I thought it would end up being an October release.
September also marks the FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of me being published. Yep, Demon Restrained went live on September 3, 2013 and I’ve never looked back. It’s weird to think I’ve published 50+ books since that day. WEIRD. Weirder still when I think of all the completed books I haven’t published yet.
Reading that, you’d think I write a lot or something. HA.
October’s already looking to be pretty stellar. I have a birthday mid-month AND my favorite holiday is on the horizon. Yessssss. Bring on the Halloween craziness, I say!

Monstrous Revelations 3 is OUT NOW!
Lookie, lookie! I managed to squeak out a release before the end of the month.
No lie, that was debatable for a while. Life, man. It gets in the way sometimes.
But here we are! Ari’s next adventure is in the bag. So to speak.
As with the other Monstrous books, this is exclusive to Amazon, so it’s available in Kindle Unlimited for those who subscribe.
Monstrous RoguesAmazonRelease Date: September 29, 2018
Pages: 56
Genre: Monster Erotica, Paranormal Romance
Ari Colton isn’t sure about this adulting thing.
Sure, she has the mating part down and she runs her own successful business, but there’s more to being adult than just boning and numbers. Sometimes you have to do the thing you feel in your heart even when others are dismissive of it.
Tracking down rogue shifters might seem like a fool’s errand to others, but Ari knows allies come in all shapes and sizes. She’s going to do her best to start with one dirty, hungry group living wild on the outskirts of town.
Supernaturals are stronger together and that includes the outcasts and rogues.
Now Ari just has to convince them to listen to what she has to say.
Warning: This book contains a cranky nymph and the friends who support her. There might also be new friends on the horizon if Ari can sweet talk them fast enough. As we all know, Ari knows how to turn on the charm when she needs to.
<< Monstrous Planning - Monstrous Acceptance >>
Now I’m off to see what mischief that crazy nymph will be getting into next.

Monstrous Short – A Life Lived Loudly
A Life Lived Loudly
Liam
Monstrous
It was no hardship watching Ari vibrate with excitement, Liam mused. Especially when the excitement came from something he’d done.
His mate had a tendency to make high-pitched noises of delight when she found something thrilling and, as ear-bending as those sounds were, he wouldn’t have her do anything differently.
Ari lived life loudly. She squealed and giggled and yelled. And that was just when she was excited. Throw in some sexual stimulation and the sounds get exponentially louder.
There was screaming. Often.
But today’s excitement came from her first glimpse of the bar he and Jerinth had been working on for the past week.
They’d carved and cut and polished that beauty from a solid piece of wood some of the sprites had directed him too in the deepest part of the forest. It was from an old tree that had been happy to sacrifice part of itself for him and the others who protected their wild stretch of land.
It was humbling to accept such a gift.
Liam didn’t believe he did anything more than other supernaturals would do if the land was in their care. He kept the woods safe as best he could. He welcomed any who needed sanctuary.
He might have chosen a human name for himself, but he was still the Guardian in these parts. Nothing had changed in that regard.
The trees remembered. The elementals who slumbered beneath the earth whispered their thanks in their dreams.
And that glorious piece of wood that Jerinth had carved into a work of art stood as a reminder that his work—the work of all the supernaturals—would never be done.
There would always be more to protect. Others. The small ones. The prey creatures. Those who couldn’t protect themselves.
The thought gave him strength. Purpose. The drive to do everything he could for those who looked to him.
His mate’s joy at the bar was the first step.
It was a trivial thing to others, perhaps, but her happiness over the bar drove him to greater heights. Her delighted squeals made the woods ring with joy.
And that was what life was all about.
“Liam! It’s beautiful!” Ari spun toward him, her eyes shining. “Where’s Jerinth? I want to tell him what a wonderful job he did.”
Crossing his arms over his chest, Liam smiled gently at his mate. “He is with Amanda, I believe.” When she went to rush past him, he caught her arm and tugged her against his side. “Perhaps you should give them some time alone. Jerinth has been working on the bar almost non-stop.”
His wonderfully accommodating mate snuggled up to him without protest. “Right. Makes sense. I’d want to cuddle you if I hadn’t seen much of you over the past week.” Her smile turned sly. “Which, actually, I haven’t, have I?” Her fingers stroked down over his chest. “You know, now that I’m thinking about it, we should christen this place. Put our mark on it, so to speak.”
Clearing his throat so he wouldn’t laugh out loud at his nymph’s version of subtlety, Liam curved his hands under her thighs and boosted her up until they were eye to eye. “Christen it?” he asked, all innocence.
Long lashes fluttered down for a moment as she looked at his mouth. “Yep. You know, nakedly? Without clothes? You and me? Having wicked, wicked sex right here on this beautiful bar?”
This time he did laugh, a low, deep chuckle that made Ari’s pupils expand with arousal. “Is that sanitary? I thought you were going to use the bar to entertain people.”
“I’ll make sure it gets thoroughly wiped down before anybody stops by.”
His mate. She thrilled him. She humbled him every day in every way.
“Well, then,” he said, taking three long strides until he could rest Ari’s delectable ass on the polished surface, “as long as you do a thorough job.”
He’d set the stage for thorough. Right here. Right now.
His mouth. His mate’s body.
The sweet, seductive smile he loved so much put in an appearance.
And that was how the bar Ari had commissioned so she could have the first monthly monsters’ night out got the workout of its long, eventful life.
The End

Monstrous Short – A Monstrous Night Out
A Monstrous Night Out
Ari
Monstrous
“Okay. So obviously we can’t go out to a regular bar, but we can make our own bar here. In the house.” Ari pointedly ignored the way Siri’s head popped up and her eyes went wide with excitement. She had a well thought out speech put together to convince her friends this was a great idea. She was determined to get through that before Siri started making suggestions. “Liam and Jerinth are putting together the actual bar. The rest will be a piece of cake.”
Siri started bouncing, her bikini top threatening to lose the fight against gravity.
Ari blinked and focused on Liz who was, as usual, hovering near the kitchen door. “Liz, if you wouldn’t mind being in charge of the snacks, that would be great.” At the shy werewolf’s nod, Ari beamed. “Outstanding. Ella and I will work on logistics. If anyone has anything on their calendar they can’t reschedule, make sure you let us know. If you don’t speak up, I expect you here.”
Here and partying their asses off.
“Siri, could you get me your friend Luz’s number? I want to see if I can buy some of that wicked moonshine from her.” Oh, that moonshine. Ari wouldn’t soon forget the hangover it had given her. She’d just have to watch how much of that devil brew she drank.
A phone was thrust into her face without warning and Ari took a stumbling step back.
Siri waved the phone around like a madwoman. “Luz’s number.”
Right. The half-dragon wasn’t a procrastinator. Good to know.
Siri leaned in, getting uncomfortably close. “You know I work at a bar, right? I can totally help with this.”
Ella snorted. “Of course, she knows you work at a bar. She went there with Cin a few times to meet you. Remember?”
There was a hint of sadness in Ella’s voice. Like maybe she wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
Which was exactly why Ari had decided they were going to make a damn bar in the house. Liam kept calling it her speakeasy, but that made zero sense to Ari to she ignored it.
Anyway. House. Bar. A totally hopping girls’ night.
Ooh. Dance floor. They needed a dance floor.
Shit. And music.
Okay. Maybe she’d revise her plan. A girls’ night sounded fun, but she might have to recruit a few of the guys to help with the background stuff.
And if she was going to recruit a few, she really needed to invite them all. Because they were awesome and fun and she loved watching them trying to be social.
Grinning as maniacally as Siri, Ari found some paper and started a list of things she needed to get together before the big night.
Food? Check. She’d coordinate with Liz and have her get her a list of things they needed. Which didn’t mean the werewolf was going to get to hide in the kitchen all night, either. This was going to be one of those bars where the food was of the serve yourself variety.
Music? She’d work on that. If Michael or one of the other guys wasn’t interested, she’d see if one of his werewolf buddies from the pack house could help out.
Actual physical bar? Being built as she wrote. Well, being planned. Whatever. Liam and Jerinth would get that done with plenty of time to spare.
Dance floor? Anything could be a dance floor. Hell, they could set up a dance area outside.
Huh. That would rock, actually. Dancing under the stars, moonshine in one hand, her darling man wrapped around her as they swayed to the beat of whatever was pounding through the air.
Could Liam even dance? She’d never asked and the opportunity to see firsthand had never come up.
She’d have to find out.
Feeling even more confident about the fantasticness of this idea, Ari looked up from her notes and pinned her friends with a look.
“Okay, ladies. I’ve decided we’re going to invite the guys and make this a thing. Ella, get the word out. Cin can help.” Cin would love helping plan this. “For the first bar night, we’re going to keep it on the smaller side. Us and our mates. If it works, we’ll start planning something bigger for others in the community.”
Gawd, she loved that idea.
A monstrous night out. Her, her honey, her girls, and their mates to start, the monstrous community later.
Feeling energized, Ari began handing out even more assignments.
These types of things didn’t plan themselves, you know.
The End
