Care and Feeding of your blog
Welcome back everyone!
I’m guest posting over at Rachel Thompson’s Bad Readhead Media blog. Today’s topic as you can see is Care and Feeding of your Blog.
To give you a bit of background on my reasonings for this post…I’ve had the occasion to ‘fix’ several blog recently. Honestly, there is nothing worse that a tearful call from a friend saying they have been locked out of their hosting and upon further questioning they admit to no backup. I’m always available to help my friends, but where to start when there is no back up?
The second disaster that I found myself involved in was a site that was not kept up to date and subsequently was infected with malware.
I felt that is was worth mentioning the steps that are necessary to keep your blog healthy and protect your work against loss – hence the guest post.
Please drop by the post here and see if you can learn a tip or two.
The video that I talk about in the post is the one from a few weeks ago:

The Ultimate Off-Page SEO Factors (Infographic)
One of the hardest things to teach to beginner bloggers is that to create a great blog, a searchable blog, a high ranking blog, there is more to it than just posting and peppering Facebook with your posts.
There are the technical aspects that typically only the tech savvy marketing bloggers and of course the tech bloggers take advantage of.
When I found today’s infographic, I knew that I just had to share it.
Although some of this info might be above some people’s heads, I think that the average person can follow the instructions and work on increasing their SEO. Have a look and let me know what you think.

How to Create Export Files to serve as back up files on WordPress and Blogger (Video)
Today’s topic seems to be sore one for me. I’m often the one that is called in to fix a site when it goes south. The first question I ask is “Do you have a backup of your site?” Too often the answer is “No ”
I hear people tell me that they aren’t very technical and creating a back up is far beyond their capabilities. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Although an export may not be the be all and end all, it is better than nothing. Take a few moments to watch the video and see how easy it is – on WordPress as well as Blogger.
For those of you that blog on WordPress, put UpdraftPlus in place. It is free, easy to schedule and will send a backup to your Dropbox or GoogleDrive or even your email.

The Cheater’s Way of creating HTML using a blog (Video)
If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that they don’t code, therefore they can’t have a blog (or operate a WordPress site) I’d be rich.
Let’s be clear
Coding is NOT necessary to operate a WordPress or Blogger blog!
Now that we have gotten that out of the way…do I use HTML or iFrame code on my blogs? Yes, of course. The video embedded below is an example of me putting iFrame code on my blog post. How to do that was covered in a previous post.
Do I take HTML that I’ve gotten from other sources and put it on my blog? Yes, I do that also and how to do that is covered in the post here.
But did you realize that you can use your blog to create HTML code for you? I like to call it the Cheater’s way of creating HTML code. You can do this using either a WordPress blog or a Blogger blog – both will work. For the how, watch the video below and you will be amazed at how easy it is!
Enjoy!
Since you are here, I’d like to mention the re-do that I’m doing of my survey of Book Bloggers.
If you are a Book Blogger, please take 5 minutes or so to answer some questions here

How to Embed Hyperlinks in a WordPress Post or Page (Video)
As you can tell from the graphic above, today’s video helps with embedding links or hyperlinks in WordPress post or page text. Although I frequently get questions about how to do this, I’m not sure if some people don’t know how to do this, or if they just couldn’t be bothered.
Honestly, one of my pet peeves is having to see the long nasty Amazon links in a Book Blogger’s post. I think they need to be hidden – or embedded behind some text.
I hope that once you watch this video, you will see how easy this is to do, and will embed all the links in your posts and pages!
