THE KEEPER
CHAPTER 1Thomas Keller walked along the quiet suburban street in Anerley, southeast London, an area that provided affordable housing to those attracted to the capital who discovered that they could only afford to live on its edges, financially excluded from the very things they had come to London for in the first place. He knew Oakfield Road well, having walked its length several times over the previous few weeks, and he knew in which house Louise Russell lived.Keller was cautious. Although confident he would draw little attention in his Post Office uniform, this was not his normal route. Someone might realize he shouldn’t be there and that the mail had already been delivered earlier that morning, but he couldn’t wait any longer—he needed Louise Russell today. As he approached number 22, he made sure to drop post through the letter boxes of neighboring houses, just in case some bored resident had nothing to do other than spy on the street where nothing happened anyway. As he posted junk mail his eyes flicked at the windows and doors of the street’s ugly new brick houses, built for practicality with no thought of individuality or warmth. Their design provided excellent privacy, however, and that had made Louise Russell even more attractive to him.His excitement and fear were rising to levels he could barely control, the blood pumping through his arteries and veins so fast it hurt his head and blurred his vision. He quickly checked inside his postal delivery sack, shuffling the contents around, moving the junk mail aside, touching the items he had brought with him for reassurance—the electric stun gun he’d bought on one of his rare holidays outside of Britain, the dishwashing-liquid bottle that contained chloroform, a clean flannel, a roll of heavy-duty tape, and a thin blanket. He would need them all soon, very soon.Only a few steps to the front door now and he could sense the woman inside, could taste and smell her. The architecture of the soulless house meant that once he had reached the front door he could not be seen from the street and nor could Louise Russell’s red Ford Fiesta. He held his hand up to ring the doorbell, but paused to steady himself before pressing the button attached to the door frame, in case he needed to persuade her to open the door to him. After what felt like hours he finally pressed it and waited, until a jerky shadow moved from the bowels of the house toward the front door. He stared at the opaque glass window in the door as the shadow took on color and the door began to open without hesitation or caution. He hadn’t had to speak after all.Now at last she was standing in front of him with nothing between the two of them, nothing that could keep them apart any longer. He stood silently, in awe of her. It felt as if her clear, shinning green eyes were pulling him forward, toward her glowing skin, her pretty feminine face. She was only a little smaller than he, about five foot six and slim, with straight brown hair cut into what was nearly a bob. She was about the same age as he was, twenty-eight years old. He began to tremble, but not with fear any more, with joy. She smiled and spoke to him. “Hi. Do you have something for me?”“I’ve come to take you home, Sam,” he told her. “Just like I promised I would.”Louise Russell smiled through her confusion. “I’m sorry,” she said, “I don’t think I understand.”She saw his arm moving quickly toward her and tried to step back, away from the threatening-looking black box he held in his hand, but he stepped forward to match her stride. When the box touched her chest it felt as if she’d been hit by a wrecking ball. Her feet left the ground as she catapulted backward and landed hard on the hallway floor. For a few blissful moments she remembered nothing as her world turned to black, but unconsciousness spared her from reality all too briefly. When her eyes opened again she somehow knew she hadn’t been out for long and that she was still unable to command her own movements as her body remained in spasm, her teeth clenched together, preventing her from screaming or begging. But her eyes were her own and they could see everything as the man dressed like a postman busied himself around her prone body. His stained, buckled teeth repulsed her, as did the odor of his unwashed body. As his head passed close to her face she could see and smell his short, unkempt brown hair, strands of which had stuck to his forehead with sweat. His skin was pale and unhealthy and appeared quite gray, marked with acne and chicken-pox scars. His hands were bony and ugly, too long and thin, the skin almost transparent like an old person’s. Long dirty fingernails fidgeted at things he was taking from his post bag.Everything about him made her want to turn from him, to push him away, but she was trapped in the unrelenting grip of whatever he’d touched her with, unable to do anything but watch the nightmare she was at the center of. And all the time he spoke to her using the name of another as the pictures adorning the walls she knew so well stared down at her—happy photographs of her with her husband, her family, her friends. How many times had she passed the pictures and not taken time to look? Now, paralyzed on the floor of her own home, her sanctuary, the same pictures mocked her from above. This couldn’t be happening, not here—not in her home.“It’ll be all right, Sam,” he promised. “We’ll get you home as soon as we can, OK? I’ll get you in the car and then it’s only a short trip. Please don’t be scared. There’s no need to be scared. I’m here to look after you now.” Delaney Q & A     What would D.I. Sean Corrigan think of author Luke Delaney?
Because Luke Delaney was actually a real detective I think Corrigan would at the very least respect him, although he doesn’t really seem to like anyone that much. If Delaney hadn’t been a cop then Corrigan wouldn’t give him the time of day and would resent someone who hasn’t done the job for real writing about it and making money out of it. He’s a bit of a stickler for that sort of thing.

Thomas Harris for sure, then probably JD Salinger and Graham Greene.ABOUT THE AUTHORLuke Delaney joined the Metropolitan Police Service in the late 1980s, and his first posting was to an inner-city area of South East London notorious for high levels of crime and extreme violence. The Lost Love Of A Soldier By Jane Lark

Lost Love of a Soldier Tour photo LostLoveSoldierTour_zps6b9a5965.jpg The Lost Love of a Soldier photo ThelostloveofaSoldier300dbi_zpsb47e47d2.jpeg  Title: The Lost Love of a Soldier (Marlow Intrigues #4)   Author: Jane Lark   Genre: Historical Romance 18+ Regency Period   Publication Date: July 17, 2014   Publisher: Harper Impulse an imprint of HarperCollins   Event Organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc. Synopsis Young, naïve and innocent, Lady Ellen Pembroke falls for a young army officer. Paul has such an easy enchanting smile and his blue eyes glow, vibrancy and warmth emanating from him. She is in love. Captain Paul Harding, finds his attention captured by the beautiful young daughter of the Duke of Pembroke at a house party in the summer. Finding Ellen is like finding treasure on a battle torn field. His sanity clings to her; something beautiful to remind him that all in the world is not ugly. She’s someone to fight for and someone to survive for when he is called to arms in the battle of Waterloo…     The Lost Love of a Soldier Excerpt“Ellen?” Paul whispered her name into the night as he heard the rustle of frost bound leaves on the ground. His breath rose in a mist into the cold winter air. He was on the Duke of Pembroke’s land. He’d not dared encourage her to take a horse, so he’d come close enough that she might walk from the house and find him. He waited at the end of an avenue of yews, out of sight of the house, in a place she could easily see him. His horse whickered, sensing something, or someone. “Ellen?” he whispered again. Still no answer. He stayed quiet. Listening. Wondering if she’d been caught as she left the house. He hoped not. If she’d been caught her father would give her no freedom. Short of leading a military assault on Pembroke’s home, he would not be able to get her out then. The horse shook its head, rattling its bit, and snorted steamy breath into the cold air. The chill of the winter night seeped through his clothes. There would be a hard frost. He hoped she’d dressed in something warm. He’d have to buy more clothes for her before they sailed. She would need garments to keep her warm in the sea breezes she’d face on their journey to America. There was another sound. “Ellen?” “Paul?” How did this woman manage to make his heart beat so erratically whenever he saw her? He could run into battle and not be so affected. She looked even more beautiful in the dark. Ethereal. A band of silver light reached through the scudding clouds and caught her face. He let go of the horse’s bridle and instinctively moved forward. He’d never held her. In the summer there had been no moments alone, she’d been strictly chaperoned and even when she’d come to meet him she’d brought the groom and her sister. When they’d met a fortnight ago, she’d still brought a groom. For the first time they were alone. “Ellen.” He stepped forward and embraced her. In answer her arm came about his waist. It was the most precious feeling of his life. He would always remember this day. She was slender and delicate in his arms. She slipped free, but he caught her nape and pulled her mouth to his, gently pressing his lips against hers. It was her first kiss, he knew; he could tell by the way her body stiffened when he‘d pulled her close. He let her go, a tenderness he’d never known before catching in his chest. “Come.” He took the leather bag she carried. “Will you ride before me, or would you rather sit behind my saddle and grip my waist?” “Would it be easier if I ride behind you?” Her voice ran with uncertainty. She was giving up everything to come with him. “Do what feels comfortable for you, Ellen.” She nodded, not looking into his eyes. “I would prefer to ride pillion.” “Then you shall.” He warmed his voice, hoping to ease her discomfort. Turning to the horse he slipped one foot in the stirrup, then pulled himself up. “Did you have any difficulty leaving the house?” “No, the servants’ hall was quiet, and the grooms had all retired.” He rested her bag across his thighs, then held a hand out to her. “Set your foot on mine and take my hand. I’ll pull you up.” He watched her lift the skirt of her dark habit and then the weight of her small foot pressed on his, as her gloved fingers gripped his. She was light, but the grip of her hand and the pressure of her foot made that something clasp tight in his chest, and the emotion stayed clenched as her fingers embraced his waist over his greatcoat. He shifted in the saddle, his groin tightening too. A few more days. Just days. He had been waiting months. As he turned the horse, Ellen’s cheek pressed against his shoulder. “Did you tell anyone you were leaving? Your sister? Or your maid?” “No, I did not want them to have to face Papa knowing the truth. He would be able to see they’d lied, and then who knows what he might do.” Paul urged the mare into a trot as Ellen continued. “He made me spend the day on my knees reading the Commandments because I refused to marry the Duke of Argyle.” “Today?” He wished to look back at her but he could not. Her father had been diabolical to Paul, sneering as though he was nothing when he’d done the decent thing and offered for her. He could not imagine the way Pembroke treated the girls. He had to get Ellen to Gretna before her father caught them, so she never had to come back and face his retribution.       Goodreads  Purchase Links  Amazon Black Button Logo photo images-1_zps246a6b7d.jpeg Barnes and Noble Button Logo photo c2296f_306728afb2274f4d8ff8f4c2d7ae8dcf_zps5af225a4.png iBooks Button Logo photo Unknown-1_zpsf805fa21.jpeg     About the Author photo For13_Jane_Lark_Full_Res_zps518c75cf.jpg Jane is a writer of authentic, passionate and emotional Historical and New Adult Romance, and a Kindle top 25 bestselling author. She began her first historical novel at sixteen, but a life full of adversity derailed her as she lives with the restrictions of Ankylosing Spondylitis. When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write. Now Jane is writing a Regency series and contemporary, new adult, stories and she is thrilled to be giving her characters life in others' imaginations at last. You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane's favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book which drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was 'Katherine' a story crafted from reality. Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots. 'Basically I love history and I am sucker for a love story. I love the feeling of falling in love; it's wonderful being able to do it time and time again in fiction.' Jane is also a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development in the United Kingdom, and uses this specialist understanding of people to bring her characters to life.
Connect with the Author: Blog | Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest | Website     For the last post in my tour for The Lost Love of a Soldier, which fans of the series will know is the prequel to the Marlow Intrigues series, I thought I would share where the Marlow Intrigues will go next and what new inspirations I’ve discovered. And most importantly, will there be more? You will be pleased to know, there’s no doubt there will be more, the next two stories are already written, and there will be two more after that… So you have another four to go. The next story is Mary’s, Edward and Ellen’s first child. Her story actually began in The Scandalous Love of a Duke, but I will leave you to keep guessing why ;) Inspirations from the absolute treasure chest of Harriette Wilson’s memoirs and the insight she gave us into real Regency life will continue throughout the series, but while I was writing John’s story a few years ago, I began reading the letters of Lady Caroline Lamb, and then went on to read her life story, and Glenarvon the novel she wrote which is said to contain perfect true descriptions of her real way of life in the Regency period. So you have probably already guessed, my books from this point forward pull inspirations both from Harriette, and from Lady Caronline Lamb, who oddly happened to be the sister of the man Harriette fell completely and utterly in love with, John Ponsonby. I keep discovering so many odd connections in my research. The oddest though… Discovering Harriette’s memoirs, I believe, was responsible for my writing break, her inspirations lifted my work out of slush piles and brought the Marlows into print––at the age of eight I was told I would write a novel––at the time I lived in a house with a view of the Uffington White Horse Hill (the oldest white chalk drawn horse in England) ––the teacher who told me I would write a book lived just across the street––a couple of miles beyond the hill I stared up at while sitting on my bedroom windowsill daydreaming––is the house where Harriette began her career as a courtesan, as recorded by none less than Jane Austen. TRUE. So many strange coincidences. To me there is some sort of fate unravelling in this. Jane’s letter was dated, Thursday, January, 8th, 1801, “Eliza has seen Lord Craven at Barton, & probably by this time at Kintbury, where he was expected for one day this week. – She found his manners very pleasing indeed – The little flaw of having a Mistress now living with him at Ashdown Park, seems to be the only unpleasing circumstances about him.”I hope you enjoy reading this series as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
See the inspirations for all Jane’s books on Jane’s Pinterest Page Discover all Jane’s inspirations on Jane’s history blog Oh, go on then, as you are itching to know why Mary’ story began in The Scandalous Love of a Duke, here’s the excerpt where I hid the clue…
John did not stop but carried on until they reached his mother and father who stood at the edge of the room in the far corner. “Mary, is already dancing,” his father stated. John’s gaze spun to the dancers. “With Framlington, he’s an out-and-out rake and a fortune hunter. He’s made no secret of it in the clubs. I’d warn her off.”His father’s gaze swung to John. “You’re certain.”John just lifted his eyebrows. “You are going to have to write that list you promised me, of everyone I need to keep her from.”  John laughed.
Mary’s story will be out later this year.GiveawayThis giveaway, includes an antique English necklace worth £150, plus signed copies of The Illicit Love of a Courtesan The Passionate Love of a Rake And The Scandalous Love of a Duke    a Rafflecopter giveaway

Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy by Jodi Linton

Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboyby Jodi LintonSeries: Deputy Laney Briggs, #2Genre: Contemporary Romance, MysteryPublisher: Entangled: IgniteRelease Date: August 18, 2014

On Wednesday, August 20th from 8:00pm - 11:00pm EST I am hosting a Facebook Party to help celebrate the release of Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy . There will be special guests, lots of fun & prizes, and tons of cowboys!Click here to join the party!

Some cowboys are worth getting dirty for.

In her latest adventure, sassy Deputy Laney Briggs discovers the local high school football coach passed out under the stadium bleachers wearing nothing but a smile…and his wife’s lingerie.

Things really start to get wild when she runs into the smoking hot Federal Marshal, Colt Larsen, snooping around the Granger’s house. Quicker than a cold snap comes and goes in Texas, Laney finds herself up to her eyeballs in a case involving a ruthless motorcycle gang, a Mexican drug cartel, a kidnapping, and a shoot-out to rival the O.K. Corral.

In over their heads, Laney calls in the big guns—her very own Texas Ranger, Gunner Wilson, who’s ready to fulfill every last one of her desires. But as things heat up between them, the stakes get higher than ever, and Gunner’s help may not be enough for Laney to get out alive…

I plopped into my chair, tossed my hat on top of the desk, then did the same with my legs. Leaning back, I shifted my weight to get comfortable and opened my mouth  to begin telling him everything that had gone down since we’d parted ways at the stadium. “The gentleman I was speaking with is—”

“What the pretty lady was about to say,” a voice said, cutting me off in mid-sentence, “was that I’m the federal marshal she met at the Grangers’ place.”

I peeked past Elroy and wanted to die on the spot.

There, hunkered down in the back corner of the station, a hip resting against the wall, and a muscular arm tossed over the Igloo water cooler, was Colt Larsen. “How the hell…?”

He moved away from the wall and stood in the middle of the room, straight and tall. “More precisely, I’m Federal Marshal Colt Larsen from Tarpon Pass.” The smug asshole extended his hand toward Elroy.

“Tarpon Pass,” Elroy said, shaking his hand. “Now where might that be?”

“It’s down on the coast. Not too far south of Rockport,” Colt answered.

“Never heard of the place,” Elroy said.

“It’s a nice town,” Colt replied, then fixing his eyes on me, he added, “We’d love to have you come out and visit. We welcome folks of all kinds in our town.”

Elroy wiped his mouth. “My, my, a federal marshal.” He shot a look my way. “I bet Gunner’s going to lose it when he finds out you’ve tagged yourself another cowboy.”

Colt let out a short cough. “Do you mean Gunner Wilson?”

“Yeah. Who else would I be talking about?”

“I’ll be damned.” He smiled. “You’re the Laney Briggs.”

I shrugged. “And your point is?”

“It just all makes perfect sense why you shot at me tonight, that’s all.” He smiled some more, crossing by the desk and making a turn down the corridor leading to the single jail cell.

I got up and stalked after him. “Colt Larsen,” I shouted at his distancing back, “I’m warning you. If you take another step, I’ll…”

He spun around. “You’ll what? Shoot me?”

“Maybe.” I fisted my hands at my side. “Are you always a pain in the ass?”

He pulled off his hat and scratched his head. “Yes, ma’am. Well, that’s what my ex-wife used to always tell me.”

That silenced me for a minute. Before I could cough up a reply, Colt took it upon himself to help me out.

“I can’t believe it. The infamous Laney Briggs is speechless,” he taunted, winking. “Is it that you don’t see me as the marrying type?”

I narrowed my eyes and called, “Elroy, get the keys to the cell. We’re about to have ourselves a little chat with Mr. Granger.”

EXCERPT  A hazy mist hung low over the town as I exited the library. Five textbooks weighted down my arms and I thanked my lucky stars my house was only five blocks away. The streetlights illuminated my path but it was eerily quiet out. I forgot how everybody locks their doors by five in small towns. That ominous feeling I couldn’t shake from lunch only got stronger as I walked. I clutched the books tighter to my chest and hurried my pace. Up ahead a shadow of a man stretched across the sidewalk. As I got closer, a voice rang out among the stillness. With a start, I realized it was Daemon. He was on a phone call, laughing about something. Although confronting him with my questions alone in the dark wasn’t ideal, I couldn’t wait any longer. Raising my free hand to summon his attention, Daemon stepped off the curb. Right in front of an oncoming car.My books dropped to the ground. “Daemon, watch out,” I screamed. His green eyes turned toward me but it was too late. The blinding white headlights swallowed him whole. A blood-curdling cry left my lips.“Holy shit. Holy shit,” I gasped. The driver of the car sped on like nothing had happened. Running to where Daemon was hit, I reeled back in shock when he wasn’t there. What the fuck? Was I losing my mind? The sensation someone was watching me rolled up my spine. I looked toward the opposite side of the street and nearly keeled over. Daemon was leaning against a tall oak tree without a care in the world. As if he didn’t just stare death in the face.
Inspiration Behind Book
The Accidental Kiss was based on my first novel I ever wrote, four years ago give or take. However, the plot came to me when I was sixteen. Reeling from a breakup, I thought how amazing it would be if I could kiss a guy and see the potential future of said relationship. That way if a dude was going to cheat on me or turn out to be a complete ass, I could cut my losses early. No harm, no foul.  Since my dad is a writer, I pitched him the idea, which he loved with great enthusiasm. Let’s be honest though, my dad is my number one supporter and everything I do is met with an outpouring of support. So, I didn’t take him seriously. The idea sat untouched in the corners of my brain until one foggy autumn morning.  Instead of working on my history paper, I sat at my desk and begun to turn the idea into a novel. Although that novel never went anywhere, it did give me the jumping off point for The Accidental Kiss. Cursed - A Yorkshire Ghost Story by Karen Perkins

Book Description
She’s back. This time no one is safe.
A skeleton is dug up at the crossing of the ways on Hanging Moor, striking dread into the heart of Old Ma Ramsgill – the elderly matriarch of the village of Thruscross. And with good reason. The eighteenth-century witch, Jennet, has been woken.
A spate of killings by a vicious black dog gives credence to her warnings and the community – in particular her family – realise they are in terrible danger.
Drastic measures are needed to contain her, but with the imminent flooding of the valley to create a new reservoir, do they have the ability to stop her and break her curse?

Book Excerpt

Old Ma Ramsgill continued her chanting of, ‘I bind thee, Jennet Scot, to this valley. Thee’ll do no more harm here. I bind thee Jennet Scot—’ She screamed as something knocked her down. Screamed again as her body broke. Then resumed her chant. The storm above the valley intensified.‘Got you now, bitch,’ Ma whispered. ‘Got you on the run – too busy celebrating your freedom, forgot what was—’ She screamed again as lightning struck nearby.‘Missed, bitch!’ She cackled into the sudden dark as the lights went out. ‘That all you got? Terrorise my family, would you? Ha!’Another scream as her leg was twisted and she felt – and heard – another bone break. ‘Do what you like to me – I’ve lived a long life, more than you ever did. Too late to stop me now!’The fire flared and sparks leapt out into the room.‘No!’ Old Ma Ramsgill screamed, louder than she had for sixty years. Sparks landed on the pile of journals and bred flames. As they took hold, Ma forced her broken body along the floor and reached out. She found her own journal, dragged it out of the inferno, beat it against the floor, then rolled on top of it to smother the flames. She passed out.

I use it practically every week!My iPad with the Kindle appMy writing notebookTrading cards for Lennon’s Girls TrilogyReading glasses, sunglasses, prescription glasses.Chocolate and a sore back. Oh that’s not in my purse!
2) Inspiration behind the book
The characters in Lennon’s Girls Trilogy came to me in a dream. The outlines for all three books were written first, and I wrote several scenes for the last book prior to writing the first one, probably because the final book held so much emotion, pain, and love. The intensity between the two main characters struck me as something that many readers, including myself, could relate to.The first book Lennon’s Jinx got pinged a few times for having realistic male internals. I get the fact that some women don’t want to be in the head of a teenaged boy. Growing up, most of my friends were guys, and I could easily relate to them. Even though I had zero practical experience in sex until college, I read a lot, so my guy friends often asked me questions about sex to satisfy their girlfriends. Any healthy male, especially teenaged boys, have X-rated thoughts, and I wanted to be true to my character. Though I have to say my copy editor made me tone it down a bit. I find exploring people’s most inner thoughts allows me to truly understand others. Getting into those dark niches of my friends and acquaintances provide insight into cultural, racial, demographic, and gender differences that make each of us unique. It’s that understanding and digging deeper that makes characters come alive.

4) What I Love to WriteI love to write multi-genre stories that cross barriers and spark the imagination. I read everything from non-fiction to sci-fi from romance to political thrillers. I love to write stories that keep the readers guessing. Learning from good mysteries, suspense, and thrillers allows me to inject those elements into romance and my young adult series. Stories that make readers care about the characters and keep them turning the pages are what I strive to achieve. Unlike many authors, I try to read every written review and often find some really easy fixes to make my fiction better. I don’t agree with everything, but for the most part, I find many of the reviewers are thoughtful and considerate. Sometimes I get a laugh when someone says something couldn’t possibly be true when it is. Let’s face it; truth really is stranger than fiction. Though my work is fiction, I pull from my life and others’ experiences to add in salient details. I research whatever I’m unsure about or where I want more depth. It’s probably not possible to get every detail completely accurate, but I work hard at putting on the characters’ shoes and walking around in them. It’s not what I would do, but what my characters would do.
5) TEN BOOKISH PEEVESToo many typos. I have never read a book that didn’t have some grammar mistake or typo, but if the story is rife with mistakes, I won’t read it.No research done on the topic. No one is perfect, but when it’s apparent that nothing was researched, the fiction is sometimes irresponsible and hurtful to those who have experienced what happened in the book and make it seem less than the actual experience.Male and female characters that sound the same, i.e. dialogue, internals.TSTL. Too stupid to live heroines or heroes. My critique partners jump all over me whenever I have one of those moments. I recently read a highly rated book where a seasoned cop left his loaded guns on his front porch step at the request of a teenage boy.Too much narrative. It drags the story. During my rewrites, I try to remove as much as possible.A male voice that sounds like a valley girl. Guys do not think like women, and women shouldn't expect them to.Male voices that all sound the same: sarcastic, testosterone infused, masochism.Male characters that women instantly fall in love with who are either abusive or have the psychological profile of a serial killer.POV switches in a scene or chapter or too many POVs. Unless you’re Barbara Kingsolver, don’t use too many because it dilutes the connection the reader has to the story. The expectation that a writer is perfect. We aren’t. My critique partners catch problems with my work all the time, and I thank them when they do, but I work really hard at doing my best.
 6) ADVICE FOR WRITERSExperience life. What I love to read is when someone has actually experienced part of what they’ve written.Join a writers group and hone your craft. A wealth of information can be gathered from workshops and conferences and other writers.Go back to school. My dad says, “Once you quit learning, you’re dead.”Find good critique partners. They will help you stay motivated and keep you in line.Find a good copy editor. Even traditionally published books suffer from grammar mistakes.Keep writing and do your best.Read, read, read. With each novel, strive to be better.Have fun and enjoy life. Life is too short to dance with mean people.Smile. More people will want to know and meet you, and that’s where real characters evolve.

Excerpts
"I wait patiently offstage. Indigo Blues has been playing for almost an hour, and the crowd loves them. With sweat glistening on Lennon’s firm chest and abs, his tats shine under the spotlight. I’d like to claw out the Rain on his chest. How dare he put me over his heart?“We’re going to slow it down,” Lennon says into the mike, his deep voice quivering my abdomen. “I’d like to introduce the love of my life and my wife, Rain from Crank.”A few disappointed girls boo. Lennon has on leather pants, and it’s obvious he isn’t wearing underwear. That long penis splayed across his pelvis and riding down his thigh is no sock. And when he catches me staring at it, the damn thing grows. He dresses like a slut, but I can’t?I strut onto the stage, imitating the Marilyn Monroe catwalk. I fake a smile despite the icepick stabbing my damaged leg. The guys in the front rows throw roses onto the stage and even a few girls do. Those must be for Lennon. I pick one up and smell the intoxicating scent. I’d like nothing more for us to be at home, the three of us.Lennon meets me halfway and closes in on me. I suck in a quick breath, not suitable for singing. My legs shake being so close to him. A mixture of hate and lust fill my belly. He nods at the band to keep playing the intro. He leans down and ties my shoes, like he did when I ran into him at the sorority party after not seeing him for eight years.“You’re still my girl,” he says. The crowd quiets to hear him. When he fingers back his dark curls, like he often does to Hope, a whimper escapes my lips. I glance away from his face, and my gaze lands on his loins. He covers his mouthpiece and whispers into my ear, “Getting an eyeful?”Ugh. I’m still staring at his crotch. I can’t help it. He might as well be naked wearing the tight leather. Tears spring to my eyes. “I hate you,” I mouth.Hurt shadows his eyes. His hand presses on my hip then glides over my butt, shoving me against his erection. He rubs it against me, and my knees almost give out. I long to carry his baby again, to feel her growing inside, her snare drum of kicks against my belly, to sing to her. As Lennon grinds against me, a lot of girls groan down front. “Make love to me,” he says into the mike. When the song ends, Lennon doesn’t let go of me. He takes both hands and cups my cheeks. What the hell does he think he’s doing? One hand slides up my back and grips the back of my head. My body mutinies me and catches fire. He leans down and forces my mouth open with his tongue. I struggle against him, but it’s of no use. He kisses me long, hard, and deep. So much desire fills that kiss my body goes limp in his arms. The arena has grown strangely quiet. I break free, swing my opened hand at him, and slap him hard across the cheek. A handprint blooms there, throbbing a brutal red.“Women,” he clucks into his mike, holding his cheek."

"While I toss in my sleep, I bump into something warm and soft. Half asleep I wrap my arms around her and cup small breasts. Rain’s aren’t small. When my nose nuzzles her hair, the scent is not Rain’s but smoky, reeking of pot.I stumble out of bed and turn on the light. “What the hell?”Cindy smiles up at me and pats the bed. She’s in butt-floss panties and no bra. Small, perky tits stare back at me. “Come back to bed. I thought I’d surprise you.”My mind has a hard time controlling my tongue I’m so out of it. I finally find it. “I am not going to fuck you, so get the hell out. You’ll never be a backup singer for Indigo Blues again.”She stands, picks up her clothes, like it’s no big deal, and says, “I have a contract. You can’t just fire me. And one way or another, I get what I want.” Her finger scrapes my chin as she cavorts by me. She’s so unappealing the Big Guy is completely limp, or it could be the drugs. She grabs my dick. “This is mine. You wait and see.”I push her off, but it’s hard because my body wants to fall back into bed. I won’t do that until she’s gone though. I’m not that wasted.Carrying her clothes, she struts out of my bedroom door and into the living area—her shirt barely covering her breasts. She doesn’t even bother putting them on. “You should put some clothes on,” I slur.“I want to make sure you know what you’re missing.”I open the door to shove her out, and Rain is standing there wearing the sable coat I bought her and the sexiest pair of red alligator stilettos I’ve ever seen along with black stockings. She came to me. Shit. I’ve been dying for this moment but not like this. Not when I’m stoned. She snorts out a bitter laugh, not what I’m expecting. As Cindy squeezes by Rain, she brushes her breasts against her. “Excuse me.”Rain ignores her, cocks her head, and studies me with those beautiful desert-blue-sky eyes of hers. “You’re high.” I reach for her, but she jerks back. “Don’t. Please don’t.”

"I shackle both of Rain’s wrists above her head, so she cannot escape. She rasps but doesn’t struggle against my bond. Those desert-blue-sky eyes smolder and lock onto mine.I slam my groin into her, my cock hard and throbbing for her. “Why are you here? To torture me?”She blinks at me. “Huh?”“You look so fucking hot. Why would you come here? Why would you hurt me like this?” I smash my lips into hers, hungry and hot, and she fiercely kisses me back. Her tongue collides with mine. “Please don’t do this to me, Rain.” Did she change her mind? It doesn’t seem likely from the finality of the no-contest clause. Her chin drops to her chest, and her gaze lands on the fresh bruising on the inside of my arm. Without breaking my tight grip, she gently kisses the mark. I wrestle my arm free and hide my shame behind my back while the other pins her against the wall. “I’ve only done it a couple times.” It’s a lie. I’ve shot up a half-dozen times since I got the papers. “I’m not an addict.”“Please stop.” Her eyes shine with pain for me. “I love you, and I want more children…with you and only you.”“What?” What is she saying? I avert my eyes and my disgrace. “It’s no longer your concern. I’ve got this under control.”“You don’t.” One hand wriggles free, her fingers trace my parched lips, and my cock aches for her. “What are you doing with these girls? Do you know how much it hurts me? And the drugs. That’s far worse.” "I slip out of my sweats, and Defcon’s eyes grow to the size of Moon pies, and Cage’s mouth opens wide enough to swallow a water buffalo. Too bad Lennon isn’t around to see this. The leather bustier I bought for stupid Lennon shows plenty of cleavage, and the matching shorts show the lips of my butt cheeks. It’ll be hard for me to dance regardless. My left hip twinges at the thought of any sharp turns. We run out onto the stage. We get the arena pumped up during the first five songs, when I spot Lennon coming at me. His lips are curled into a snarl. His arms swing at his side, and his face burns an angry red.A few of the stagehands go after him, but not before he plucks me off the stage. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I yell. I expected him to be mad but not this. He’s gone psycho.Shock and embarrassment breaks into a sweat onto my forehead. This is way overboard. “Let go of me.” His touch showers me with sparks. I still love him. I still want him. I just need to be able to look him in the eye without the trapdoor collapsing underneath me. The crowd goes wild, cheering and clapping. They probably think this is part of the act. The worst part is as mad as I am, my sex tightens with a need so strong that I’m gasping for air. What is wrong with me? He used drugs and cheated on me with low-class, trailer trash.I yank the mike away from my mouth and beat on his rock-solid chest—the one I curled against when he pulled me from the wreckage. “Put me down, Lennon.”Trey keeps rapping like nothing’s happened. “That Lennon Tyler is such a He-man,” he adlibs. The stagehands pry me from Lennon’s grasp after a hell of a struggle. Lennon reaches for me, but his band mates and the roadies restrain him. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” “Stop. Just stop.” It’s hard to leave him. I should’ve comforted him, but he can’t do this to us just because he’s popular.Clive locks onto him, but it’s like holding down an enraged bull. “Bloody hell.”Lennon’s glaring so hard at me, I cringe. “The mother of my child can’t dress like that,” he growls."
