“Don’t,” he said. “I want to see you.” I closed my eyes and absorbed his words. Why was he so sweet? How did he know what to say to me? My heart began to race and I started breathing heavily. He moved his body closer to mine and I knew I had no escape. I sunk into him, but the truth was, I wasn’t ready. I placed my hand onto his chest. “Jaheim, I know…I haven’t been with someone since my last boyfriend. I don’t think I can…right now.” He smiled with soft eyes. “I would never make you do something you don’t want to do.” His thumb ran across my bottom lip, but can I at least kiss you?” “I-“ I didn’t have time to respond. His lips came crashing down on mine as he moved his hands all over my body. His mouth was hot. It had been so long since I had known this type of warmth. I thought about the last time me and- “No. He’s gone.” Jaheim leaned further into the kiss. I reached up to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. His tongue glided slyly across my lips. I gasped and he pulled away with a smile. I stared up at him wide eyed and blushing. “Sorry,” I said with a rising chest. “I didn’t…that was unexpected.” His eyes had misted over. He smiled. “I’m full of the unexpected, Natalie.” He came back down and put his lips on mine. A strong desire awakened in me and my body pushed into his. He placed his hand on my back while I grabbed onto his shirt. One hand moved down to my thigh, slowly inching its way up my dress. I moaned in his mouth, begging him to go on. I wanted to be careful, but I, also, wanted him. Closer and closer he came to the spot that had gone untouched for too long.

How I Wrote the Villain in Deadline by Scarlet Hawthorne
Devolution – The process by which an UNSUB begins to lose control, falling in a downward spiral, unable to control their urge to perform a particular offense brought about by the trauma of their offenses. The rapid movement from “Organized” to “Disorganized.”  -- From the Criminal Minds glossary, criminalmindsfanwiki.com.
I primarily wrote Deadline in a panoramic point of view, as if the reader is watching a film, with no inner monologue of the hero or heroine. We learn their thoughts and feelings by what they say and how they behave – just as we do with people in our own lives. No one ever knows what anyone is thinking. I digress from this narrative technique with the villain in the story by allowing the reader into his head and “hear” the delusions of this mad man.
Clearly mentally ill, he may have developed schizophrenia in his twenties, which went unnoticed because of his ability to function “normally” and rationalize any paranoia to others. His delusions have been focused on religion, but now he believes God is speaking to him and has chosen him for a mission.
On the television program Criminal Minds, the BAU would probably identify him as a highly-organized “UNSUB” (unknown subject) who has had recent stressors in his life, which caused his break with reality; but the circumstances of his third killing indicate that he is devolving rapidly.
We see his devolution accelerating while we are in his head, finding that he believes God is actually assisting him in his pursuit of the target of his delusions. At first he takes lines from the Bible out of context and applies them to himself as an Angel of God, as well as to his victims as sinners deserving of their punishment. By the end, he is grasping at anything, from Biblical passages to Jewish mythology and even Greek lyrical poets.
He is now in the middle of a full psychotic break. And the focus of his psychosis is Gillian Tate.

I had gotten used to things over the years. Marley’s emotions always took you on a wild roller coaster ride, the ebb and flow often unexpected and sometimes tumultuous. But during those moments that things flattened out, and the ups and downs of her life were on an even keel, even if for just an instant, those were the times that I treasured. I wouldn’t trade those rare memories for anything in the world. Those were the times that I saw the real Marley…the girl that forced me to play Barbie’s with her, the girl that convinced me the mud pie she made for me was really chocolate. The way her eyes brimmed with enthusiasm and mischief at the same time, you couldn’t help but believe her, knowing that she would squeal with excitement and delight when you pretended to take a bite of her ‘chocolate’ pie. “Remember the tree house?” she asked, bringing me back from my own memories. I could hear the lump in her throat. “How could I forget? Excerpt  “Now, that’s not fair. How can someone look so unbelievably hot in just my T-shirt and boxer briefs?” He makes me blush, which is not easy to do. He saunters over to me and wraps his arms around my waist, letting his hands slowly wander down the back of the boxers. Grazing my backside with both hands, Donovan gently grabs a handful. “These look so damn sexy on you. Forget about Victoria’s Secret.”

“I may have to steal these to wear at home,” I say. “I like the way the shirt smells of you.” I lift the collar, taking a whiff.

“Really? They’re clean.” 

“I know I can smell the laundry soap, but I can also smell your scent on it.”

“Hmm. Something about that is sexy, too. Okay, you can take the shirt home, but we’ll keep these boxers here for you when you sleep over. Deal?” Donovan says, squeezing my bottom. “Now let’s get this cute little ass of yours into my bed.”

 I giggle and pause at the foot of the bed.

“Wait. What side do you sleep on?” He points to the right side, furthest from the door. “I sleep on that side.” Which makes sense since the alarm clock is over there. So I walk over to the left side and slide in under the covers. Donovan takes a quick trip to the bathroom and when he comes out he turns the lights off, checks the locks on the door, and comes over to his side of the bed, slipping under the covers.

“Can I kiss you good night?” he asks, shifting on his side to face me.

“I would love that. Please do,” I purr at him.

The room is almost pitch black except for the faint blue glow of the clock radio, but I can make out Donovan is leaning in for a kiss. When our lips connect a warm glow begins to spread from my face to my neck and down my body. So slowly and gently we move our lips together. The contact awakens all the sexual feelings suppressed throughout the night, during our no-touching ride-along. Donovan lifts his hand to stroke the side of my face and cradles my head, deepening the kiss. His tongue is cool and tastes of toothpaste and Diet Coke. Our breaths begin to mingle and come at a more rapid rate. With every exhale Donovan absorbs the earlier tension allowing me to relax and succumb to him. We continue to kiss—lips, tongue, lips and tongue, making love with our mouths.

Donovan’s hand leaves my face and, starting at my waist, inches up to my right breast. Skimming the pad of his thumb along my erect nipple, he sends a shockwave of passion right between my thighs and I arc into his hand. His kissing becomes more urgent and our breaths come in quick short bursts forcing us to break. Moving his lips along my jawline to my neck and over to the sensitive spot below my ear, he continues kissing, licking and sucking on my neck and fondling my right breast over the T-shirt.


Moving his hand back down to my waist, he slips his hand under the shirt, stroking my bare skin and making me shudder.
