I've been writing for many years, starting out at County College of Morris in New Jersey with a course in Journalism. Since then I've published five novels for Black Lace Books under a pseudonym (Savannah Smythe) and one ghostwritten book for glamour celebrity, Abi Titmuss, in 2005 (10 Fantasies.) Also, I've published two M/M erotica stories as S. A. Smythe, Lexington Black and Docklands Diamond, both available on Amazon and Smashwords. Since then I’ve published The Cloud Seeker and Closer Than Blood, both romantic suspense novels under Hollow Hills Publishing. At the moment, I'm and I’m working on my third Jayne Lockwood novel. I draw from my experiences as an Englishwoman and my time in New Jersey. The area of the Chilterns where I grew up and where I live now is rich in inspiration, secrets and tales from the past. As an author, I have more stories inside me than time to write them! Finally, I also write book reviews for WROTE Podcast (http://wrotepodcast.com.) WROTE stands for WRitten On The Edge, and features authors and other creatives from the LGBTQ community. I’m very proud to be a part of this venture, which was started in 2014 by myself, S.A. I hurried back up the aisle, looking for a break in the foliage where I could step across, but the wall of green was impenetrable. My boots clattered on the stone floor, and I almost lost my footing as I came around the corner. I caught a glimpse of a figure turning past a small forest of bare poles standing in tall thin pots. More carefully now, I followed, watching the occasional pools of standing water and mossy patches on the uneven flags. I turned down the same space that the figure had gone and gagged. The stench was foul. I buried my nose in the elbow of my coat and stumbled backwards. My heel caught on one of the tall pots. I grabbed at the pole to catch my balance, but it swayed away under my weight and snapped. I fell heavily on the floor, a length of cane in my hand and the other canes clattering against each other in mock applause. I stood gingerly, wincing against the sharp pain of a blossoming bruise. The intake of the foul miasma hit me like a blow. I took a few cautious steps, using the length of cane as a walking stick. We had taken a pirate laden with slaves and bound for Port of Spain once. The Thame had stumbled on him by chance on the high seas, and did some damage before a long chase commenced. The pirates had given up looking after their cargo for some days by the time we finally overcame them and boarded the ship. In the hold, we had found a hundred souls dead, and only a handful alive. They were barely recognisable as men in their filth and malnutrition, packed into the darkness with death. We took the survivors on board and burned the shattered remains of the ship with its grisly contents. Some nights the smell of that hold haunted me. And now, I had found it once more in a stuffy corner of this oppressive glasshouse. My mind reeled between the present and past. Before me, a row of corpses slowly decayed into the boards of a ship’s hold. I doubled over and retched up scalding bile. I spat to clear my mouth and squeezed my eyes shut against the vision. Minutes passed before I dared to look up again. Before me were rows upon rows of noxious-looking fungi. They grew in shallow trays of straw-flecked manure, distended stems rising to lopsided caps. The sickly dark-yellow colour was deeply unwholesome, similar to the lantern lit bodies of the dead slaves. The fungi varied from six inches to a foot tall, and the mature ones seemed to be the same across. At least eight tables laden were with these trays. Oozing stems showed some had been recently harvested. I reached out my hand in horrified fascination. Something in their vile shape called out to be squeezed. Two soft footsteps fell behind me, and a strong hand gripped my wrist.

I usually keep a cooler in my truck, but I was running late this morning and forgot it.” He raised the bottle, and I watched with awe as he wrapped his beautiful pink lips around the opening, mesmerized as his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he drank. Adam’s apple? Fuck yeah, I could totally claim him right now and devour him like a sweet, succulent apple. Damn. It’d been too long since I’d had sex.
Taking a look around at the work he’d done, I was amazed at how different the yard looked in comparison to the last time I tried to fix it up for Maggie. “I’m positive Mags is going to want you back. It looks amazing out here. Did you do that?” I pointed toward a birdbath in the yard, previously covered in filth with weeds grown all around it, now gleaming in the sun with fresh water and surrounded by tiny purple flowers.

Amy McClung was born in Nashville, TN. She is the second oldest of four girls and occasionally suffers from middle-child syndrome. She met the love of her life online in August of 2004, on his birthday of all days, and married him in September 2005.

“Yeah, but….”
“But what?”
“It’s kind of lonely.”
“You hate people.” Cheryl glared at her computer screen. “Well, except me.”
Cheryl shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess it’s kind of the reality of you and Destin getting engaged. Maybe it’s time for me to grow up.” Cheryl fiddled with the necklace she wore, three stones in varying shades of green, while on the computer Sera played with her own, though hers was blue.
“Stop it.” The edge in Sera’s tone caught Cheryl off guard. “You’re playing with your necklace.”
“See, that just proves how immature I am.”
“Shut up. I’m playing with mine too. I always do. But you wouldn’t have that necklace if you hadn’t done the most amazing, unselfish, mature thing anyone could ever do.”
“Aww, if my tear ducts worked, I’d cry.”Sera laughed. “Your tear ducts work just fine. You just don’t let yourself feel anything. Which is fine, because that’s just you, and I love you for that. But don’t ever convince yourself that you’re not mature.”
“Okay, maybe mature wasn’t the right word.”
“Nope. Try again.”
Cheryl put her now-empty suitcase into the closet. “Maybe I hitched my wagon to the wrong star, and I’m chasing the wrong dreams. Maybe art isn’t what I’m supposed to do.”
“You are definitely jet-lagged because I’ve never heard you say such things. Please go to sleep and call me when my best friend has returned and kicked this insecure little brat to the curb.”
