Alex tapped a prearranged code on the glass, and the window immediately slid up. After stepping inside, he closed the window, locking it. It was undeniably odd to be sneaking into a woman’s room for reasons other than joining her in her bed.

They’d tried to think of a neutral place to meet, but Ramon had spies all over South Miami. The reason he’d lied to his brothers sat crossed-legged on the end of her bed, leaving the only chair in the room for him. The bedside lamp was dimmed, and in the low artificial light her fiery red hair reminded him of the flames of a campfire, changing colors whenever she moved. Her eyes almost appeared black, but in the daylight they were a captivating green. Cat eyes, he’d thought the first time they met.

He’d first laid eyes on Madison Parker three weeks ago at Ramon’s house while playing a game of pool with the man, doing his best to lose a hundred bucks. Not an easy thing when his opponent kept missing the pocket. Alex had already learned that Ramon didn’t like losing, no matter what the game was.

He quietly sighed when Ramon missed again. Alex bent over the table and lined up his cue. He was going to have to put this one in the pocket, or it would become obvious he was missing on purpose. If Alex could manage to lose to Ramon, the man would be happy and might even brag a little about his drug business.

Just as Alex pulled his arm back to take the shot, a woman walked into the room, and he hit the ball so hard that it flew over the rim of the table and hit the wall. Jesus, she was gorgeous. Red hair curling halfway down her back, green eyes, and a splash of freckles across her nose, she took his breath away. A first for him.

He liked women, maybe a little too much if you listened to his brothers, but never had he wanted to lay claim to one at first sight—until now. Who was she? She glanced from him to the dent in the wall then back at him, and full lips that wore nothing more than clear gloss lifted in a grin.

“Nice shot, Ace.”

He straightened, dropped the cue stick, and walked around the table, holding out his hand. “Hi, I’m Alex, and you are?” She put her hand in his, and he had the unsettling thought that he was never going to let it go.

Her gaze fell to their joined hands. “I’m—”

“My cousin,” Ramon said, stepping next to her and putting his arm possessively around her shoulders.

“You don’t look anything alike.” It was a stupid thing to say, but he had the urge to call Ramon a liar. If she was a member of the Alonzo family, she was off-limits, and that was a heartbreaker.

She tugged on her hand, and he reluctantly let go, then she slipped out from under Ramon’s arm. “I’m Madison Parker, and you’re very observant, Alex.”

There was mischief in those cat eyes, but it faded when Ramon wrapped his fingers around her hair and pulled her roughly back to him. She didn’t seem to like her cousin, if they were in fact cousins. Alex wasn’t sure he believed it, but he also hoped she wasn’t Ramon’s girlfriend.

“Ramon’s father and my mom are twins.”

So it was true; they were cousins. He wondered where the red hair and green eyes came from, but he reminded himself that as a family member of the man he was investigating, she was untouchable, no ifs, ands, or buts. Where that gorgeous hair and those beautiful green eyes came from was not his concern.

When she tried to pull her hair out of Ramon’s fist, Ramon’s eyes flashed with annoyance. Alex gritted his teeth and forced himself not to give Ramon a bloody nose.

She slapped at her cousin’s arm. “Ouch. That hurts, Ramon.”

As fast as a striking snake, Ramon backed her up to the wall, pressed his body against hers, and crashed his mouth down on hers. She whimpered as she tried to push him away.

Alex saw red, dark blood red. He grabbed the man’s earlobe and twisted it hard until Ramon let go of her.

“What the hell’s wrong with you?” Ramon said, rubbing his ear after Alex let go.

“She’s your damn cousin, man. The better question is, what’s wrong with you?”

Ramon looked at her and sneered. “Does she look like my cousin? I think my aunt brought the wrong baby home from the hospital.”

“I’m proud to say I got my looks from my dad,” Madison said to Alex. She swiped the back of her hand across her mouth. “The next time you touch me like that, cousin, you’re gonna want to guard your balls, because those are what my knee will aim for.” She walked out of the room with her head held high.

“Damn, she’s hot,” Ramon said, his gaze on her ass as she left.

Alex visualized how Ramon would look without teeth.

I’d spent a lot of time thinking about the past. How Taffi had looked tied to my bed and bent over with her perfect ass in the air. I remembered her taste as I worked my lips over her body, licking the thin sheen of perspiration from her skin. Damn, she was delectable. Salty and sweet. Feminine and soft. Eyes closed, lips parting. Completely abandoned to the pleasure and pain I gave her.

The plan was to get her back in bed and see it all over again.

I was once fortunate enough to win an award to attend a writing retreat at Cill Rialaig in Ireland. It is a very special place in County Kerry in the townland of Ballinskellig. Ballinskellig, historically, was a secular settlement for holy men and women who wanted to live a quiet life. They grew food for monks who lived on Skellig Micheal, which is a World Heritage Site and the location where they filmed the most recent Star Wars film. This place in Ballinskellig consists of eight tiny cottages dating from the medieval period. The cottages are bare and only contain the essentials for visitors. No television, no internet, no distraction, lots of gale force Atlantic wind, sea swell and squawking seagulls. This place was the most magic of places, a really beautiful setting. I was stranded here for two weeks. At the beginning I thought I was going a bit mad because it was SO quiet but I managed to write a huge amount because there were NO distractions. My ideal writing space. What are your five favorite words? I love the word actually. When I was a kid I used to add the word actually, actually to every actual sentence I actually said. It used to actually drive my brother mad. Actually. Cretin is always a good word to have handy. Most cretin’s can’t really understand that you are insulting them when you use that word to their face. Starlight (is that two words or one?) I love this word because it makes me smile when I think of it. I saw my first shooting star this summer and it was magic. So Starlight makes me think of magic and that always makes me smile. Unicorn (see reasoning above). Pajamas – who doesn’t like that word and all it brings to mind. Every now and then I like to decree that it is Pajamas Day . . . a day where I loll about in my pajamas drinking tea, reading, eating cake . . . in fact . . . I now declare . . . Today Shall Be A Pajamas Day! Please tell us why we should read your book. Use one sentence only. You should read this book because it is about young women learning to be strong, to be independent, to kick-ass. Why did you did you decide to write The Wolf Mirrror? I wanted to write a historical romance for young adults, a take on the classic that includes modern influences. In The Wolf Mirror, there are corsets and carriages but there are also mobile phones and Snapchat. Do you have a favorite character in The Wolf Mirror? A least favorite? It took me blood, sweat and tears to write every book so a character, even one with flaws is close to my heart. Every character is necessary in this book and so all have a role to play, there is no lesser or greater. What is your process? Do you plan everything out before you begin writing or just go for it? I learn from my mistakes and I once spent six months writing a project with no plan, no breakdown, no chapter outline…needless to say it went in the bin because it was totally disorganized and manic. I get an idea and I plan in stages of three, a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Then I work to chapters with beginning, middle and end and I build characters that start from one place and progress to another (in terms of character development). Computer? Typewriter? Pen and paper? What is your favorite way to write? I plan in paper and ink, and I complete with keyboard. Coffee or Tea? Tea. What kind of background noise do you prefer when you are writing? The sweet sound of silence. What is your favorite genre to read? Historical. No fantasy. No wait, mystery. Actually the classics . . . ahhhhh, it’s really hard to decide. Who is your favorite author? That’s a question right up there with picking favourite child or pet. It is not possible to answer. What is the one book you think everyone should read? Jane What did you want to be when you grew up? An archaeologist Tell us three things about yourself that cannot be found on the Internet. I hate marmite. I have two tattoos and my best friend from primary school is still my best friend today. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects? I am writing two books at the moment . . . (a big no no but can’t be helped). I am working on a middle grade historical adventure called Leonard Moonfinger and the Giant’s Ring and I am also just finished first edit on an adult book called Which Craft?, about a witch.  

About the author: Caroline Healy is a writer and community arts facilitator. She recently completed her M.A. in Creative Writing at the Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen’s University. She alternates her time between procrastination and making art. In 2012 her award winning short story collection A Stitch in Time was published by Doire Press. Fiction and commentary has been featured in publications across Ireland, the U.K. and more recently in the U.S. Caroline’s work can be found in journals such as Wordlegs,The Bohemyth, Short Story Ireland, Short Stop U.K., Five Stop Story, Prole, Literary Orphans and the Irish Writers’ Centre Lonely Voice Her debut Y.A. novel, Blood Entwines was published by Bloomsbury Spark in August 2014 and she is in the process of writing the second book in the series, Blood Betrayal, as well as a short story collection, The House of Water. Amy McClung was born in Nashville, TN. She is the second oldest of four girls and occasionally suffers from middle-child syndrome. She met the love of her life online in August of 2004, on his birthday of all days, and married him in September 2005.

Currently they have no human children, only the room full of colourful robots that transform into vehicles and the large headed Pop Funkos who represent their favorite characters. Collecting movies, shot glasses, Pop Funkos, and dust bunnies are some of her favourite pastimes.

Amy began writing in September of 2011 and independently published her first YA novel, Cascades of Moonlight, Book one of the Parker Harris series the following May. Her first book was a means of therapy for her, enabling her to escape reality for a while during a difficult transition in her life.
