When she isn’t staring at a blank page, willing the words to jump from her head to the screen, she’s usually playing on her iPhone, reading a book, or taking pictures with her fancy camera (which she has no idea how to use).

SNEAK PEEK
“No!
You hear ME out! You brought me to this stupid city, and I hate it here!
Everything about this place sucks, and now, because of you, I’m crazy!” Tear
trickled down my face, and I wiped them away fast. “Okay? Fucking crazy! And
it’s all your fault!”
Dad
paced the room. “You have every right to be upset, Dominique. We never meant
for any of this to happen.”
My
head began to swoon. My knees buckled. Every time I was near Farrell, a funny
feeling came over me. Sometimes it was a subtle dizziness, other times a tingle
throughout my body, but always the feeling warmed me. Calmed me. And seemed so
natural and familiar.

Excerpt
Jackson Darcantel was on his skateboard, heading towards the front entrance of Upperten High School, when he spotted a blue head of hair crawling out of the bushes.
“Emerald?”
She looked up as if it was perfectly normal to be crawling out of the shrubbery and smiled.
“Hey, Jackson, how’s it going?” Emerald popped up and wiped her jeans clean, patting the Walkman on the inside of her oversized army jacket for good measure.
“Are you sneaking out of Principal Grossman’s office already? Sheesh, Emerald, it’s only been THREE weeks.”
“Technically, I wasn’t sneaking out since I was never really inside,” she rationalized, squinting as she said the word “really.” “I was only sort of inside.”
“I’m not even gonna ask what that means. I just know it was something illegal and probably dangerous.”
Emerald smiled. Jackson was one of her oldest friends, and he was used to her getting into trouble at every turn. He was a smooth talker, which came in handy when she was trying to weasel her way out of something. Jackson picked his skateboard up and carried it under his arm, and the two friends walked together. He was much taller than Emerald, almost six feet to her barely five and a half. He wore a cap turned towards the side and a black windbreaker jacket over his dark blue tee shirt and jeans. He looked like a younger version of Denzel Washington. Even Emerald, who thought of him as brother, had to admit he was pretty good looking. She had no idea why Jackson hung around her. Aside from being nice to look at, Jackson was also incredibly smart. He was everybody’s favorite high school senior, and she was on a fast track towards juvie. But they had been friends since first grade, and Jackson saw a side of Emerald that her classmates never got to see. There was more to her than just being the school troublemaker.

Today, Fabulosity Reads Book Tours is hosting a GREAT book blast tour and 1-day giveaway. Check it out and be sure to enter to win!
Fairy, Texas. A small town like any other.
Laney Harris didn’t want to live there. When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that “boring” would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.
She was right. Boring took on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

Review: The Elemental Detective by Kirsten Weiss
The Elemental Detective
by Kirsten Weiss
Blurb
Mermaids, menehunes, and murder.
Riga Hayworth just wants to relax with her new husband on their Hawaiian honeymoon. But a body on a Kauai beach pulls them into a murder investigation, sending the supernatural world into an uproar.
When Riga detects traces of magic at a murder scene, she knows she can’t ignore the call. There’s necromancy afoot, and she must prepare for the battle to come. But can Riga fight the forces of nature? Or will they destroy her and everyone she loves?
Book five in the Riga Hayworth series of paranormal mystery novels, The Elemental Detective is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy blending romance with the supernatural, and exploring the magic of Hawaii.
Review
I love it when I find a new paranormal mystery series to devour–and The Elemental Detective has given me just that!
The Elemental Detective is the fifth book in the Riga Hayworth series, so in all honesty, it probably wasn’t the very best place to start. If I’d had the time, I would have gone back and read the first four books before writing this review (the beginning of the semester is a terrible time to promise a review–what was I thinking, y’all?!). But Weiss does a fairly good job of giving enough background to keep a new reader caught up, unlike a number of other books I’ve come to late in a series. And the mystery itself quickly drew me in, allowing me to gloss over the elements that were clearly holdovers from earlier books, so I quickly forgot that I might be missing some of the more subtle nuances of character interaction.
The mystery moves along at a good pace and kept me guessing. As usual with books I enjoyed, I don’t want to give away much of the plot. So here are the important points: Riga Hayworth is a great detective. The storyline is fun. The paranormal elements read as realistic and entertaining parts of the overall plot. And Weiss does an especially great job of pulling in local elements–in this case, from Hawaiian mythology. (In fact, from what I can tell so far, it looks like she does this with all her novels.)
I’ll be reading more (ALL!) of the Riga Hayworth novels.
I’m giving this one a tentative rating of 9/10, or 4.5 stars–I suspect that if I had read the books in order, it would rate higher than that, so I reserve the right to change my rating once I go back and read the other four Riga Hayworth novels. And I’m about to go do that right now.

Release Day Blitz: Into the Fire
When did you start writing? Have you always wanted to be an author? What was Plan B?
I started writing when I was a very small child, pretty much around the same time I started reading! I wrote poems and short stories and a 13-page “novel” about a foster child named Ethel. Being a writer is pretty much the only thing I have ever consistently wanted to do, though I wanted to be a humanitarian aid worker for a few years. (I eventually compromised by getting a job in which I wrote fundraising and marketing materials for a humanitarian aid organization.)
Sadly, I neglected my dream of becoming an author for far too many years. I got two university degrees, started a great career, got married, and had two children, all the while thinking, “When things get less busy, then I’ll write that book.” I read books about writing, I dreamed about writing, I attended conferences about writing … but I never actually found the time—or the nerve—to write. Not only was I busy, I was paralyzed by the fear of failure, and overwhelmed by the seeming impossibility of it all. I was always in awe of people who could write books—and was quite sure I would never be one of them.
It was only four years ago when it hit me—I’d always wanted to be a writer; I still wanted to be a writer, and yet I hadn’t written anything since high school—over a decade ago. And if I didn’t do something about it, I would be on my deathbed, still wishing I had been a writer. And so—finally—I grit my teeth, faced my fears and insecurities, put away all excuses, and sat down to write. The result was Through the Door, which became an Amazon bestseller and led to a three-book publishing contract (the second of which is Into the Fire).
What was Plan B? Well, when I started Through the Door I was also working as a freelance copywriter, which I’ve now expanded into a boutique agency. It’s still my day job, and I love it because most of my clients are non-profit organizations—so I get to do what I love and help amazing organizations at the same time. A pretty good Plan B, if you ask me. But my first love is fiction, and I’m so, so glad I finally conquered my fears and took the plunge.

Book Description:
Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn’t plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex…well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.
Unfortunately, what waits in the Great Beyond isn’t much better. Stuck between the boring life of a ghost in this world and the terrifying prospect of three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment in the next, Irene sets out to find a third option—preferably one that involves not being dead anymore. Can she wipe the slate clean and get a second chance before it’s too late?
____________
Excerpt:
“Come.” Samyel gestured, indicating that they should follow him. “We must go.”
“Go? Go where?”
“Away. Inside. Or they will see.”
“Who will see what?”
The dark glasses revealed nothing as he stood impassively for a moment. “Everyone.”
Samyel was attracting a lot of attention. The crowd moving around them was giving him a wide berth, and he was the focus of a lot of strange looks, which just confirmed that he wasn’t dead—people could see him. Irene knew that it looked like a seven-foot tall man in a trench coat and dark glasses was talking to himself in the middle of the sidewalk. It wouldn’t be long before the cops came to investigate.
Irene gestured for Samyel to lead the way. “Fine. Let’s go.”
Irene heard another choke of protest and glanced at Jonah. There was a silent exchange of mouthed words, pantomimed gestures, and angry, exaggerated looks.
“Don’t be crazy,” Jonah hissed. “You can’t go with him!”
“You’re the one that always wants to stop and talk to every weirdo we meet,” she countered. “And what do you mean ‘you’? We’re both going.”
“Uh uh,” Jonah said. “This is your idea. If you get murdered, I’m not saving you.”
With an exasperated look, she motioned for Jonah to follow and set out after Samyel, who was nearly out of sight. Jonah reluctantly followed. Irene gave him a wry look as they trailed, side by side, a few feet behind Samyel. “You know, at some point, we’re going to have to talk about your propensity for picking fights with people bigger than yourself.”
“What’s propensity?”
“A really bad habit that you should stop.”
Jonah’s expression turned unreadable for a long moment, as if he was debating with himself, and then he looked away, stuffing his hands in his pockets and bowing his head to stare at the sidewalk as they went.
“I’ve changed the password, by the way, so you can’t do that again,” he said darkly.
She grabbed his arm, pulling him to a halt. “Jonah, listen to me. It’s not that I don’t appreciate you trying to protect me. I do. Even when it’s annoying and misplaced, like with Ernest. You’re the bravest, sweetest guy I’ve ever met, but I’m dead. You’re not. I’m already probably going to Hell for dragging you along on this adventure. Don’t add being the cause of your death to my list of crimes, okay?”
The tips of his ears had turned pink and his head was down, shoulders hunched. Then, to her surprise, he suddenly looked at her, his eyes inquiring as he searched her face. She didn’t know what he was looking for, but he was gazing at her so earnestly that she blushed.
