Excerpt
They were vicious, almost too violent for my taste. They moved faster than most did at this stage, so I knew they had recently fed on something alive. I’d usually find a small pocket of ferals in a starved, slow and harrowed state. Not this one. I slammed my sword against the metal, feeling its vibration in my grip after decapitating one of the Zompires. I couldn’t help but feel bad for this sudden invasion into Elijah’s abode.
It’d been my fault. I’d haphazardly tapped the pins back into the hinges the day prior, not even taking the rust and erosion of the metal brackets into consideration. That’s what Elijah got for dragging me into his home improvement projects. I was a warrior, not a Home Depot junkie. That’ll teach him.
Unfortunately, if we didn’t make it through this assault, I wouldn’t get the chance to chew him out for making me screw up like that.
I ducked as one of the ferals jumped at me, sending him flying through the air and right into one of the columns. His body hit with a dull thud, disorientating him but for a moment as I rolled and pushed myself off the floor, gained my footing and ran toward the atrium. I hoped the damn bastard would follow me. This one had at least two feet and almost two hundred pounds on me.
Where the hell was Elijah?
I didn’t mind clearing out the crud and taking out the trapped ferals in the Casinos we’d set traps for. But this, this was ridiculous. It felt like an entire cluster of them had taken residence during the night, stuffing themselves in the tiny corners and hidden nooks of the place. Where the heck had they come from and what had they chowed down on to be so strong? It made me shudder to think that someone was now dead because of this group. Obviously they weren’t stupid. Something about them was off in how smart they were. Why had they gathered here? Had they noticed how well taken care of it was and ventured in here to find a tasty human or two?
Whatever had led them here, they were a pain in my ass now. I turned to see if the feral with the huge biceps and dirty blonde hair that hadn’t seen a shampooing in a decade, neither had his entire body seen a bar of soap in ages for that matter, come to a stop at the edge of the light. He snarled and looked up. The sun beamed down hard into the main casino atrium where an old fountain stood empty and some greenery Elijah had managed to convince to grow. It was the only thing keeping me alive as I took the moment to catch my breath, bent over my knees and huffing. The air vibrated with snarls.
Damn!
I’d have to figure out how to outsmart this particular creature. His red eyes widened, flashing fangs dripping with gore from his recent messy feeding. Eww. That was attractive.
I straightened and held my machetes up. “Come on! Not such a big bad wolf now, huh? Afraid of a little bit of sunshine?” I reached down to grab a chunk of cement debris which littered the casino floor. I flung it straight at him, hoping it would anger him enough to come sailing into the light after me. It hit him hard on the chest before bouncing off and ricocheting against a slot machine next to him, shattering the plastic face above the wheels and knocking it to the ground. The creature snarled even louder, exposing more of his disgusting teeth. He roared with a vengeance, thrashing at the chairs around him before picking one up and flinging it at me.
What the hell?

Spotlight: Catch a Wolf
About Catch A Wolf
Raine, Ly’Tana and the others escape Brutal’s trap, but with dire consequences. Kel’Ratan has been grievously injured, and Rygel must take him to safety to save his life. Yet, they are not out of danger. A monstrous storm called the Wrath of Usa’a’mah has halted their flight from Khalid and they must seek shelter within a remote monastery or die under the storm’s power.
But High King Brutal has allied himself with the deadly assassins, the Shekinah Tongu. The secretive clan has sworn out a Blood Oath against Rygel in retaliation for his leaving their brothers in the forest to die. With their hellish hounds and Brutal’s dark wizard, Ja’Teel, they track Raine and Ly’Tana through the devastation left by the storm. Raine leads them into the west, toward Ly’Tana’s home of Kel’Halla, with Brutal’s menace confronting them at every turn.
As he finds himself falling in love with the exotic Ly’Tana, Raine is plagued by a mysterious voice in his head. Is he going crazy? In Raine, Ly’Tana discovers the one man she cannot live without. However, an evil entity has targeted Ly’Tana, bent on her destruction. How can Raine, Rygel, Kel’Ratan and her griffin bodyguard, Bar, keep her safe from its vast, unseen power?
Hunted by Brutal and his evil allies, Raine, Ly’Tana and their friends discover a new, and very strange, force dogging their trail – a pack of enormous, cunning wolves. Mysterious wolves who call to Raine in the night, and bring alive the secret he’s kept hidden, even from himself. Taunted by nightmarish visions, Raine is forced to confront his own dark demon – the beast within himself.
Who will catch Raine and Ly’Tana first? Brutal and his pets – or the wolves?
Thus begins the second novel of the Saga of the Black Wolf series.

Book Excerpt from Catch A Wolf
Raine no longer slouched in a half-conscious daze. He stood erect, his hands bound and chained behind his back.
Chains looped over and around his chest and shoulders. They might not have been there at all if one looked at his eyes.
His eyes were alive, alert and seriously pissed off. Weirdly grey and ringed in black, but Raine’s no longer. These were flat, inhuman, and deathly, deadly cold. The eyes I met in Lionel’s royal court in what seemed a lifetime ago. A gladiator’s eyes. A killer’s eyes. His eyes were a wolf’s eyes. His eyes were the still, chilling eyes of a born predator.
The warm, humorous, loving Raine disappeared. The bloody Wolf returned.
While Brutal and I conversed like civilized people, the beast rose from the shadows and darkness.
In the distance, the wolves howled.
“What are you talking about, Wolf?” Brutal asked, once more playing the polite.
Raine nodded toward Ja’Teel. “He’s well aware of ehlu’braud’s nature.”
Ja’Teel snorted. “So you can feel one another, so what? Rygel can’t find you, even if he’s still alive.”
“Oh, he’s alive, all right,” Raine replied. “He’s on his way as we speak.”
Brutal and his pet exchanged glances. Of course, Brutal shrugged. What else would he do? “Even if he’s alive, he cannot possibly get here before I marry her. We’re leagues from where we, er, picked you up.” He tittered. “And we’ll be on our way to Connacht shortly after the ceremony.”
“Connacht?” I asked, confused.
“Yes,” Brutal said brightly. “I have ten thousand troops in the surrounding areas. I plan to restore the rightful King of Connacht.” Laughing, he offered a half-bow to Raine. “Always glad to help a friend.”
“You can’t invade with a mere ten thousand,” I scoffed.
“Oh, there’ll be more joining us, I assure you.” His dead, yet very much alive eyes, rested on me. “The Kel’Hallans.”
“Never,” I hissed. “They won’t follow you.”
“They’ll obey the King.”
“You aren’t going anywhere.” Raine’s wolfish growl tore my attention from Brutal.
“You’re tiresome,” Brutal said impatiently. “Silence, or I’ll have you gagged.”
“Your pet forgot something,” Raine went on, implacable.
“What might that be?” Ja’Teel snapped.
“I carry his blood.”
“What does that mean, his blood? Whose blood?”
Ja’Teel’s eyes widened in sudden comprehension and dawning horror. He understood very well, very well indeed.
“What’s he talking about?” Brutal demanded.
“I have magic in my fists.”
In a wild attempt at bravado, Ja’Teel sneered. “So? You don’t know how to use it.”
With a flat cracking sound, the chains suddenly broke and fell from Raine’s huge arms, his immense shoulders. They dropped in a steely slither to land at his feet. As though in relief from their obnoxious weight, Raine’s huge arms rose and stretched languidly over his head.
In the same instant, Shirel leaped away from Arianne. Her fangs bared in a silent snarl, she bolted swiftly to Tenzin’s side. He received her with a quick glance and a hand to his sword as Raine dropped his arms to his sides.
Instantly, his huge, bare muscled arms flexed. His hands clenched into huge fists.
Fists of rage.
As though an explosive device had been dropped among them, the guards surrounding him suddenly flew out and away, uniforms shredded. Most dropped bonelessly to the ground many rods away and lay still. A few more energetic of the troopers moaned and tried to get to their feet, blood pouring from their eyes and ears.
“You -“
Brutal managed only the one word.
The ropes broke from my bound wrists. I glanced down in time to see them slither and flop like dead snakes at my feet.
“Well now,” Raine drawled, “does it work something like that?

start to happen. Dangerous things that should be impossible. Things to which
‘normal’ doesn’t even begin to apply.

Guest Post: Coping with Writer’s Block, by Robin Hewitt, Author of Crawford Hill
How I cope with Writer’s Block
I think every writer hits a spot where the words don’t flow the way you
plan. Although what works for one person doesn’t work for everyone, I have
several standards for coping when my characters don’t want to tell me what’s
going on in their heads.
Read and Edit
Sometimes the reason I’m stumped is because I’ve written a chapter or more in
which the protagonist is acting out of character, or saying things that just
doesn’t sound like themselves. I’ve found this happens most often when I’m
writing dialog, so usually I’ll write a one-sided conversation and paraphrase
what the other person’s reply is. Later I’ll write the other side of the
conversation in the 2nd person’s voice, so the personalities stay clear to the
reader.
When I can’t seem to get into the flow of a manuscript I go back to the
beginning and edit a chapter or two. That way my productivity isn’t suffering,
and I don’t stress out over not meeting my self-imposed word count.
Write Something Else
If you’re published, or plan to be, there’s always stuff that needs to be
written. If your manuscript progress is languishing try working on your author
bio, book pitch, cover blurb, or a press release. There’s a lot more to being an
author than just writing, and when I get stuck writing I work on other aspects
of the business. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into making a
successful book, and sometimes tackling a promotional “chore” is just the ticket
for getting me back on track.
Research and Development
Right now I have book three of The Crawford Saga in rough outline, and about
40,000 words in notes for book four. I also have the first book of another
series ready for a final edit, and need to outline and develop the second book
when that one is done.
I’m constantly reading and researching for my various projects, so if I’m not
writing the manuscript I should be I try to stay proactive. Sometimes when I’m
stuck for words I research the situation my protagonist is facing, and that
gives me a fresh view on what might need to happen next in the book.
Relaxation and Meditation
When all else fails, I work in the yard or take a walk, a bath, or a nap.
Sometimes, all four! Whatever relaxes you, indulge and don’t feel guilty if you
leave the keyboard for an hour (or a day) in exasperation. Your light can’t
shine brightly if your battery runs low!

About the Author
Born
and raised on the shores of Michigan’s Lake St. Clair, one of Robin Hewitt’s
earliest memories is of Mama warning her to beware of The Bogeyman, who lived in
the caves on the banks of the Clinton River. Although extensive teenage
explorations brought her to the conclusion that Mama had actually been worried
that she would fall in the river, she never forgot the warnings or the idea that
a monster could live beneath our feet, slinking out at night to strike terror in
the hearts of unsuspecting women and children.
Robin still lives a few miles away from Lake St. Clair. With extensive
experience writing non-fiction articles and books, Crawford Hill is Robin’s
first published venture into the world of fiction writing.

About the Book
Derek
Crawford smiles pleasantly at the anger management counselor as the voices in
his head beckon him into spiraling madness.
A burned-out and now unemployed child psychologist, Derek lives alone in the
Victorian mansion on Crawford Hill. From his great-grandmother’s widow’s walk on
the fourth floor he can watch the lights of Centerville blinking on as the sun
sets over Lake St. Clair.
From the basement he can enter his great-grandfather’s network of caves, and
prowl beneath the homes of the unsuspecting town.
As he nears his 29th birthday, one voice is getting louder. More persistent.
It’s the gravelly voice of his old man, dead a dozen years but no less demanding
than when he whipped his belt across Derek’s back.
Only one year left whelp, don’t you screw it up.
Derek knows he’s closing in on the deadline: to inherit Crawford Hill, he must
be married and father a son before he turns thirty. A legacy he’s determined not
to fulfill, because he refuses to chance perpetuating the insanity and bloodlust
of the Crawford family tree.
He’s determined, that is, until unsuspecting Valerie Fleury knocks on the door
of Crawford House. Against his better judgment, he invites her in for coffee and
more, and a glimmer of hope pierces his soul. Until she mentions she’s working
with the cops. Until she starts asking about the caves, and his parents, and a
series of rapes and murders that are occurring around Centerville. Again.
That wench would look good barefoot and pregnant. Or dead and bloody.
With the stakes rising in proportion to the body count, Derek must confront the
memories he’s spent his adult life learning to bury, and risk unleashing his
encroaching madness to save the woman who might hold his redemption.

What Would You Choose, love or duty?
On the brink of civil war, the Torrian Alliance continues with its mission to obliterate Star-children across the universe in order to suppress an intergalactic evil. Following the recommendations of his council, King Gregorio Derry reluctantly agrees to send his only son William on a mission to restore honor to his family name. William seeks to complete his assignment, the elimination of a Star-child named Sydney on planet Earth, but when the assassination is delayed he begins to realize an emotional connection with his target. With conspiracy threatening his home planet, and a hidden menace on Earth seeking to secure a vested interest, William finds himself torn between irrevocable duty and sacrificing everything he stands for to defend Sydney. As William and Sydney struggle to overcome their impossible circumstances, they start to wonder if the connection of two Star-Crossed lovers will be enough to save them from certain doom.
EXCERPT
He leaned in close to her ear. “Please Sydney, give me one more chance. The dreams, they are of you. If only I could have understood sooner, I may have been able to change our fate. But now, I know you have the power to change this. You are more than any normal person. You are the one thing I have traveled across distance and time for.”
A ray of sunlight broke through the clouds, slipping past the overlying trees. They kissed Sydney’s face. She gasped, and her lifeless body rose from the dead. Sydney swallowed a deep breath and grabbed William’s shoulders. His many tears drained from his face. The infectious warmth returned.
“I knew you’d return to me. Somehow, I knew it,” he whispered.
“I was lost for a moment in nothing but deep dark space. But I heard a voice calling out to me. It was very familiar to me. Someone I had met before. It was a woman’s voice. She told me it was time to go back. She told me I had a calling to do something great and the time of my awakening was at hand.” Sydney wiped the tears from his eyes. “Then I heard you, speaking to me from the darkness. Your voice guided me as I ran forward, until finally I saw a ray of light and I stepped into it.”
He squeezed her and planted his lips on hers. His solar cells erupted, and Sydney became surrounded in a bright aura that lifted them off the ground. He opened his eyes, amazed by what he saw. He planted another kiss, this time on Sydney’s forehead.
“There’s my signature,” he whispered.
They floated back to the ground and Sydney pulled him close.
“Sydney, is there any way you could forgive me for what I’ve done?”
Sydney caressed his face. “What’s done is done. Even through all the pain, something inside me knew that you would save me. Love brought you to me and somehow, I knew love would give you the strength to protect me.”
The present situation invaded his thoughts. “And protect you I will. I must explain everything to you, Sydney. Come with me.”
