Character Profile of Parker from His Substitute Wife . . . My Sister, by Sylvia Hubbard
How 3 women can want one man? Meet Parker from His Substitute Wife… My Sister
Who is Parker? (Character Breakdown)
Originally Parker came from Love Like This. If you remember, he part owner in Nicole Black’s (main female protagonist) laundry business.
In most novels, I never really explore my male protagonist.
Other than William Stone, in Stone’s Revenge, the man just popped in the picture – handsome, self-sufficient and ready /not ready for love.
In Parker’s case, he was ready for love, but he looked in the wrong place and ended up with Chyna.
His past is filled with insecurities about his looks. Although Chyna was the wrong woman for him, she knew exactly what to do to clean him up. From his bad hair, bad teeth and bad skin, Chyna made Parker into a very handsome man. Of course pushing him in the gym got his body to look good as well.
Yet, originally, Parker was supposed to meet Cheyenne, Chyna’s older twin sister. An evil female incarnate of the devil, Cheyenne had sent Chyna in her place to meet Parker at a party when they were younger. Seeing his potential, Chyna married him and once cleaned up, Cheyenne made it her mission to steal him back.
The twins are on a quest to win Parker’s affection and they know the only way to win him is with a baby, yet neither can get pregnant.
In comes little sister, Charisse.
How she becomes a part of the twins’ elaborate scheme to fight for Parker? Read and find out!
___________________________
Life has never been worth living for Charisse before her father died. After three attempts to kill herself were unsuccessful, she makes a deal for release from hell on earth, with one of the people who made her life what it was.
It wasn’t until Chyna finds out that her husband, Parker Mills, was having an affair with her twin sister, Cheyenne, that she realizes she’s losing the best thing she’s ever had. Feeling the ultimate betrayal by her own sibling, Chyna knows she has to do whatever it takes to keep her husband and give him what he longs for – a baby. Knowing that she’s unable to have children and Cheyenne is afflicted with the same condition, she decides to go to the only person that can help her save her marriage – her younger sister, Charisse.
In the end, one sister will die, another will lose everything and one will get everything that she wants.

Excerpt
“Spending fifty thousand dollars to produce off spring is crazy. Do you know what I could have done with that money? By this time, I’d have hundred college funds set up for you to donate to some third world child you could have adopted.”
Frustrated, Parker sunk down in the chair in front of Jaelen’s desk. “Yeah, but it’s not the same and you know it, Jae. Look at you. Five kids. Five damn kids.”
“Two are from my wife’s first dead husband.”
“But you’re still a family. You have off spring. You have someone to carry on your bloodline and you’re sharing these moments with the woman you first fell in love with and married. I want that. I want to be you… well not all ornery and mean, but you know what I mean. I’ve been married ten years to Chyna and you weren’t even married to Kim before you were bopping out twins.”
“Well, she raped me to get mine.”
“Let’s not even go into that. I think you just harbor that over her just so you can take advantage of her.”
Jaelen smirked wickedly. “It does make the mundane marriage very exciting when you can tie up your wife and make her beg for you. You should try it sometime.”
“Chyna says it might mess up her hair and hands.”
“If you can spend fifty on a baby, you can spend a couple of hundred– “
“Let’s not go into this.” Parker really didn’t want to expand upon his wife’s shallow behavior.
Jaelen took the hint, understanding in advance this was a sore subject for Parker. “So, this crazy sister-in-law, what’s her story?”
“Nothing I haven’t already told you. Chyna says her sister is so pathetic she can’t even kill herself.”
“How many times has she tried?”
“This last time makes three.”
Jaelen stopped what he was doing and frowned. “I’m not religious and all that, but she ever thought that it just wasn’t her time, and that she had a purpose in life.”
“You ever thought you’re just saying that shit because you’re an ass and you’re trying to find some hilarity out of a bad situation?” He stood up.
“So I take it you haven’t told Chyna about the boat?”
Parker didn’t answer because he knew Jaelen already knew the answer. He was saving it for the moment when Chyna announced that they were going to have a baby. Knowing that they were going to dedicate eighteen more years together deserved an award and “the boat” was the key.
Yet that moment hadn’t come and he was starting to think it never would. The majority of Parker’s friends were married and those that were had children, vibrant healthy off spring. Their blood running through small versions of themselves.

Spotlight On: Bette Stevens, author of PURE TRASH
Learn about PURE TRASH from the author, Bette Stevens
“Why did I write PURE TRASH, a short story adventure set in the 1950s?As a writer and a reader, I believe that we’re always getting fresh insight into our world from the books that we read.”

* So, hop on your bike and get ready to pedal alongside Shawn and Willie Daniels.
As an elementary and middle-school teacher (since retired), I was an eye-witness to many of the direct effects of poverty’s aftermath on kids. What hit me the hardest was the way those who were among the haves would ignore, belittle or bully the have-nots. Don’t be disheartened, though. I’ve seen students, teachers, counselors, librarians, volunteers, administrators and parents, as well as church group and other community members who have made and are still making a difference in the lives of the poor and “different” among us.
In a nutshell, that is what PURE TRASH is about—discovering what poor kids went through in the 1950s. As a teacher, I believe this story can help us better understand the plight of poor children in our society today.
The RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB SPOTLIGHT TOUR has already taken us through the first two scenes in this short story prequel to my upcoming novel. Shawn and Willie Daniels—two delightful boys who find adventure at every turn—are out on a Saturday adventure searching for empty bottles to turn into cash and candies at a story three miles from home. They’ve just left Stark’s General with full tummies and pockets full of licorice sticks. The boys are headed to the school playground to do some things they can’t do at recess.
I hear them now:
“Can we head over to the playground, Shawn?
Right now? Please, please, purty please?” Willie begged.
I finally said, “Sure, Willie, let’s go!”
Get ready to ride!
__________________________________
Willie was so excited that he stood up on his pedals for the whole five-minute ride. When he finally plopped his bike down on the blacktop, Willie took off like a fox chasing a rabbit to capture the highest swing. Mum would sure have killed me if she’d known I’d even thought about letting Willie have a hay day at the playground. She always said that I was the sensible one, the responsible one.
“Hey, Shawn,” Willie hollered out, even though I was sitting on the swing right beside him.
I knew exactly what he wanted.
“Now Willie, I’m not gonna push you, ya hear? Just pump yourself up as high as you can. You’re already lots higher than I am. Besides, I don’t think anyone can swing up over that top bar.”
Willie was having a race with himself, thumping and thudding in his seat trying to get high enough to fly over that bar. Me, I was happy to sit and swing and think. Didn’t have time for that during recess. I was always trying to figure out some way to make myself invisible. I sure didn’t want to be the target in a dodge ball game.
Sometimes I’d set up a game of marbles and practice on my own over near the building. One day Timmy Doyle asked me if he could play. I taught Timmy the rules and showed him how to shoot. The next week, Timmy gave me 10 puries in different colors, two aggies and two cat eyes―huge―a blue one and a gold one. Before that, my marbles were the old clay ones Grampa used when he was a kid. Last year for my birthday, Grampa gave me a soft cloth bag with a drawstring. It was filled with his painted clay marbles. He taught me how to play the game and told me that I was real good at it.
I liked Timmy, but it seemed like nobody else did. I heard some of the grownups say the Timmy was “a little slow.” Buddy Wentworth and a bunch of the other kids called him names all the time. I reckon that being Timmy was about as bad as being Eddie Daniels’s kid.
Willie finally leaped off his swing and took off like a tiger for the jungle gym. He raced up the bars and tiptoed around for a while, then dangled himself from the tiptop. His knees hung over the metal bar and Willie was swinging his chest for all it was worth, arms dangling and chubby tummy jiggling. Every now and then he’d lift up his back, grab the bar with his hands and flip himself upright and hoot like Tarzan. Willie sure did look like the king of the jungle perched up on that bar.
I still wasn’t in any hurry to head home. Dad wouldn’t give up his ballgame until he was good and ready. Figured I might get in some practice at climbing the bars and then try swinging across the ladder on the far end. I’d watched the other kids at school do it, hand-over-hand. It looked like a lot of fun.
“Hey, Shawn, come on up here and try it!” Willie hollered when I jumped off my swing and paced my way over to the jungle gym.
“Nah, I’m just gonna fool around over on this end, Willie.”
It was a great day. I was really having fun. Willie and me were the only kids on the playground. I had to admit that climbing and swinging across the bars of the jungle gym was cool. It was sure a heck of a lot easier than climbing pine trees out back of the house. Why, I really could do lots of things here that I couldn’t do on a tree. And, today, no one was around to stop me. No one to make me wish I was invisible. It was a great day all right.
“Hey, Willie,” I finally hollered up to him. “I think we’d better head home now so we can get Dad to take us out fishin’.”
Willie just ignored me.
I wasn’t in any hurry to get home either. Figured if we left now, we’d have plenty of time to stop at the top of Andover again and fool around. Maybe set up a few cans and get in some more practice. We were both getting pretty good at using that slingshot.
Soon as Willie heard about Andover Hill and the slingshot, he jumped down from the top bar, ran straight for his bike, jumped on and raced up the road as fast as his six-year-old legs could push those pedals.
“Hey, Willie, will ya slow?”
“Willie, SLOW DOWN!” I hollered.

Short Story Blurb: Experience the joy of a carefree Saturday and the blistering pain of feeling not quite good enough as you hop on a bike and ride into town with two delightful young boys who find adventure at every turn. Shawn and Willie Daniels live in the woods with no indoor water or plumbing. Dad spends most of his hard earned money on beer. Prejudice, class division, alcoholism, poverty, injustice, and bullying are cleverly woven into this 1950s adventure short. PURE TRASH is a prequel to the author’s upcoming debut novel scheduled for release Summer 2014.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Caring adults can make a difference in the lives of all of our children.
As a reader, I can’t begin to count the lessons I’ve learned from fiction—life lessons. As a writer, I hope to advocate for children and to raise awareness of the plight of children living in poverty today. That’s why I wrote PURE TRASH.
I wanted to write a short story that could be used in the middle-school and high school classroom so that young people today could take a peek into poverty in the past. Like adult readers, young readers learn valuable lessons from the historical fiction they read. Today, our classrooms and students are more diverse than ever. Poverty and prejudice are still with us. No matter what our age, life has many lessons to be learned. Lessons about friendship. Lessons about being resourceful. Lessons about respecting people because we’ve had a chance to pick up a book and step into their lives.

DEBUT NOVEL Planned for Release Summer 2014!
The current working title is PURE TRASH, A Boomer’s Story. It’s the coming of age of a poor boy growing up in small town America in the 1950s and 1960s.
Here’s a Work-In-Progress Cover & Blurb SAMPLE I’ve been working on for my debut novel.
Back Cover Blurb:
Remember the Good Old Days? You know, the 1950s and ‘60s, when America was flying high. The All American Family lived a life filled with hopes and dreams and life’s necessities too.
Shawn Daniels isn’t your typical American Boomer Boy. No, Shawn is a poor boy. He can’t join Boy Scouts or sports teams. There’s not even enough money for necessities. Besides, Shawn doesn’t have time for that. But when chores are done, there’s always fishing!
Shawn Daniels is the oldest in a family of four children. His father is the town drunk. Shawn’s family has no indoor plumbing or running water, but they do have a TV. Dad deserves the rewards of his labor at the tannery—television, beer and ballgames—while the boys keep the firewood cut and stacked, haul in water for cooking and cleaning and weed the gardens or shovel snow. Shawn hates school. He’s been the butt of the kid’s jokes for years, eating his onion sandwiches in the cafeteria while others feast on food that he only dreams of tasting.
It’s 1964 and Shawn Daniels is ready to leave it all behind. Shawn’s on his way to U.S. Army boot camp in North Carolina to soak up some southern sun and begin a new life. But for some reason, he just can’t get Mum’s scrapbook out of his mind. When a little fellow with blonde hair sits beside him on the plane, the life Shawn is leaving behind comes back in a flash. The plane’s getting ready to take off, so fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride!

Spotlight On: Orange Blossom by Sarah Daltry
Orange Blossom – Release Blitz
By Sarah Daltry
New Adult Contemporary
Date Published: April 4, 2014
“I’ve never understood a year. A year was always a measurement of something bad for me. A year in my father’s prison sentence, a year since my mom’s death, a year left of school before I could get far, far away from here. Now, as I look down the end of my college career, with only a little more than a semester to go, a year seems like something magical. It has been a year since Lily chose me, since she sat with me on the old swing set and made a decision that I was worthy of her. And every minute of the entire year has been better than the last.”
You already know their stories: Lily, the perfect princess, always living someone else’s life. And Jack, the broken boy, who had stopped believing in hope. Somehow, though, they found each other and what was one night blossomed into a love story.
Now, a year later, Jack and Lily are dreaming of the future. Despite all of his promises to himself that he would never be indebted to anyone, Jack makes a new promise – this time to Lily – that he will be there for her forever. But when life unravels for them, he starts to pull away, and Lily worries he’s out of reach for good.
When Jack does the unthinkable, Lily is left destroyed. Is it possible to have a happily ever after? Does love ever really save anyone?
EXCERPT
He’s smiling. Not that smirk he gets when he’s bitter but also pleased about something. It’s not the smile that says that he knows happiness is temporary. When he lines up his Skee-ball shot, there is a smile on his face that is pure. Genuine. It’s like taking a step back and seeing Jack in a photograph. One from years before his life went crazy. He is just a dorky kid playing Skee-ball and he’s so happy when he nails the shot. He does an awkward little dance and it’s the kind of thing about Jack that makes me love him. He’s gorgeous and sexy and aggressive yet sweet. He’s kind and considerate of me, both sexually and in general. But I don’t love Jack for that. I love him because there is light in the world in the space he takes up. I know he doesn’t see it, but he’s inside himself. From the outside, all I see is the absolute electricity and fire that fills the air around him.
“That’s how it’s done,” he tells me when he finishes his game, wrapping up his ridiculous stack of tickets. I’m so going to lose, but I don’t care. He’s happy. I just almost wish I were better at this, so we could stay here longer, so that Jack could be this part of himself for as long as he needs.
“I think you’re perfect,” I say.
“Because I’m good at Skee-ball? Shit, that’s all it takes?”
I shake my head. “No, but you tell me all the time. I don’t think I ever say it to you. I don’t like the idea of perfection. It’s too much of a standard to live up to, but I don’t think you even understand. It’s cheesy and probably cliché, but I just can’t imagine how I could breathe without you. How did I exist before this?”
He looks down, uncomfortable because it is one thing to tell Jack he’s hot or sexy; he can handle that and he gets arrogant and ridiculous when I tell him that. However, this part of him, this vulnerability, he buries it so deep that drawing attention to it makes him want to disappear. But I don’t want that. I want him to embrace it, because it’s beautiful.
“Don’t look down,” I say and I lift his face to look at me. His eyes explode with light, the way fireworks do on New Year’s when the sky is like ink and then it’s suddenly on fire. I lean in and kiss him, feeling his hands tighten on my arms and his lips opening against mine. He’s scared. I can feel it in the way he kisses me today; he feels himself falling and he is trying to hold on and I need to figure out how to be steady enough to hold him. “Trust me,” I plead. “Let me take some of what you’re feeling. I can handle it, Jack.”
He nods. “Another day. Today, I just want to stay here, to be here with you, where it’s safe and comfortable and my entire world is this. Where strawberries and popcorn and Skee-ball and shitty plastic toys are the entirety of what exists.” He pauses. “I promise, Lily. I will. Soon. But let me hide from it. Just for a little longer?”
“Okay, but don’t hide from me, okay?” I ask.
About the Author
Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She’s written works in various genres – romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn’t as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she’s been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships – romantic, familial, friendly – because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn’t matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future – human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah’s stories.
Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.
When Sarah isn’t writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.
The other titles in the Flowering series are Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, Blue Rose, and Star of Bethlehem. The final book, Ambrosia, will be out in June.
Sarah has also written Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy romance, and Backward Compatible, a gamer geek romantic comedy.
