The Writing Process Blog Hop
My Writing Process
I was tagged by Julie Particka (sometimes known as Seleste Delaney) for this writing processes blog hop—and at a perfect time, too, because just yesterday I finished reading her new release Fall With Me and loved, loved, loved it!
I’ve participated in this particular blog hop before, but I decided to accept this invitation because my writing process has changed in the last year. I used to be a complete “pantser” (check out my post on Marie Lavender’s blog for my post on writing mysteries as a pantser), but that has changed in the last few months. Keep reading for more information!
1) What am I working on?
I am, as usual, working on a whole pile of projects. I am finishing up edits this week for a contemporary romance novella that will kick off a series I’m writing for Entangled Publishing. I’m also working on a sequel to Legally Undead, which is coming out on May 27 from World Weaver Press. I have next week scheduled to finish up a stand-alone vampire romance that I’ll submit to publishers soon. And I’m working on sequels to Waking Up Dead and Fairy, Texas. Finally, I’m polishing up a proposal for a steamy series set in the New Orleans French Quarter.
2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
That’s a tough question. I think that in my urban fantasy and paranormal mysteries, my narrators tend to be snarkier than in many other works of the same genre. In those books, I let the smart-alec in my head out to play. In some ways, I’m still finding my voice in my contemporary romance novels—but some of that snark still comes through, I think, though in the novella that’s due out this summer, it’s the hero who’s the funny one. And one of the things that I’m enjoying most about writing in contemporary romance (a new genre for me) is the chance to both conform to and depart from the conventions of the drama–when I’m editing, I like to see the way my work weaves around the traditional elements, much like a vine climbing a trellis. The tropes and conventions of contemporary romance provide a framework, but the way my story is woven through and around that framework is individual, unique.
3) Why do I write what I do?
I started out writing paranormal mysteries and urban fantasies because that’s what I loved to read. From there, though, it was a short step to contemporary romance, and I’ve discovered that I love writing romance just as much—I didn’t anticipate enjoying creating non-paranormal worlds as much as I do! I’ve been lucky enough to work with amazing editors who have helped me develop my fiction-writing and have encouraged me to continue writing and publishing.
4) How does my writing process work?
I used to be a complete pantser—someone who wrote by the seat of my pants without much idea of where I was going next. That was an important stage of my development as a writer—it enabled me to actually finish several novels! But my amazing editor at Entangled asked me to provide her with complete, detailed synopses before I ever started really writing the novels. So now, I write specific synopses that detail all the major points of the story. Then, I work on writing scenes that lead up to and follow from those major points. Sometimes the points change—I don’t always know exactly what my characters are going to do!—but having the map makes it easier to fill in the blanks.
In terms of my daily process, I do my best to write at least 1000 new words a day, five days a week—not much for a full-time writer, but because I also teach a number of online college courses, have a young child, and am involved in editing and marketing other works, it tends to be about the most I can reliably manage. I write on a laptop in a home office set aside for work, and when I get stuck, I go for a walk or take a bath. When I’m horribly stuck, I switch over from typing to writing longhand for a while.
So. That’s me. Now I need to get back to working on all those other projects I was talking about. And from here, I nominate the following authors to give you a peek into their writing worlds next week (please check out their sites and books!):
Melanie Karsak
Katie Hayoz
John Guzzardo
Before you go, check out my latest release, due out on May 27 from World Weaver Press:
Legally Undead, available May 27 from World Weaver Press

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire draining the blood from her fiancé Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs–not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.
As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning around to face them, Elle discovers that Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

Spotlight On: Forever in Love by Nadia Lee
Forever in Love
Series: Hearts on the Line, #5
Publication Date: May 12, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Catherine Fairchild fakes being perfect by keeping everyone at arm’s length. But her billionaire CEO husband’s bigamy shatters the illusory life she’s built, and vengeful in-laws want to send her to jail for embezzling from the failing family business. Desperate, she accepts an offer from a powerful friend: help him reconcile with his illegitimate son in return for protection. How hard can it be to dazzle a small town guy?
Small town bar owner Blaine Davis has zero interest in claiming his fifty million dollar trust fund or joining the family of a father he barely knows. He can never forgive his womanizing father for seducing his mother or forget the cruelty his father’s high-society wife inflicted on them. Catherine comes from the same rich and entitled background, but he starts to fall for her anyway. Can their fragile bond survive when the true reason for her presence in his idyllic little town is revealed and Blaine’s old wounds are re-opened?
Blaine was frowning as he came down the stairs from his third-floor apartment to the first floor where his bar and restaurant was located. He would’ve been down sooner, but Salazar’s damn lawyer had called again.
Fifty million, Mr. Davis. Can you ignore that?Like any amount of money could make up for the way Ceinlys Pryce had humiliated his mother. She wanted to be a bitch to him, fine. But not to his mother. And Salazar hadn’t done a thing about it. A man who couldn’t bother to stand up for the mother of his child didn’t deserve to be a father.
If he hadn’t had a business to run, Blaine might have shot the shit with the lawyer just to run up her billable hours. She sounded expensive. He hoped she charged at least a hundred bucks a call.
It was still early, so only a few seats were occupied. But later, the place would be packed. A playoff game was on tonight, and the bar had four giant flat-screen TVs—one for each wall. His best friend and bar manager Rick Shelton lifted his chin at the sight of him, and Blaine nodded in return. Gel spiked Rick’s sandy hair, and gold studs in his ears sparkled as he moved around behind the bar. A black turtleneck and a pair of old jeans completed his work ensemble.
“Studs?” Blaine said. “Didn’t you say they were lame?”
Rick cocked an eye at one of the waitresses. “Janey thinks they’re hot.”
Blaine made a whip-snapping sound, and Rick flipped him the bird. He chuckled, then frowned at the sight of Irene at the counter, nursing a beer. “Hey, Irene, what’re you doing here? Didn’t you have to get the Blue House ready for somebody?”
“I’m done,” she said in that gravelly voice of hers. She still puffed cigarettes, just not as much as she used to. Not even losing a chain-smoking husband to lung cancer had made her quit.
“What? You get fired?”
“Nothin’ like that. The new tenant said I could go early. She’s a real looker, yes she is. If I was just little bit younger…” A wistful sigh escaped her thin lips. “I remember how I looked when I was that age. Woulda given her a run for her money.”
Blaine smiled. Irene said that about every woman. “Did you offer to make her one of your killer steak burritos?” She made them for anybody who stayed at the Blue House as a “welcome to town” dinner.
“Offered, but she said no. Wanted eat out and meet the folks around here.”
Huh. That was interesting. Rick came over and set a plate with a cheeseburger and fries on the counter in front of Irene. “Maybe she’d like to try our specialty.”
“I dunno.” Irene finished her beer and signaled for another. “Honestly, she don’t look like the bacon-cheeseburger type. A little too skinny.” She started nibbling on the butter and garlic fries. “A woman’s gotta keep some meat on her.”
“Amen,” Rick said and went away with her empty glass.
“Poor girl is all bones. At least her car’s nice.” Irene’s gaze grew speculative. “So what you up to, Blaine? Word is you’re getting an awful lot of fancy letters from people in California.”
Aw jeez. Not even mail was secret in Cooter’s Bluff. “It’s junk mail,” Blaine said. “Somehow they got my name.”
“What do they want you to buy?”
It’s not exactly like that—they want to buy me. He shrugged. “Nothin’ I’m interested in.”
Irene shook her head. “That danged junk mail. Such a waste of paper.”
“Hopefully a waste of their money, too.”
The door to his bar opened, and a woman walked in. Blaine glanced in that direction and did an honest-to-god double-take. Conversation around the place petered out as people started to notice her.
Curly hair fell over her shoulders like a dark waterfall, framing whiskey-colored eyes and lips that he found it hard to look away from. A black leather coat was belted at the waist, revealing an hourglass body that belonged on a pinup poster girl. She was so flawless in appearance, the symmetry of her features so perfect, that she almost didn’t look real. It was like god had taken the most beautiful woman in the world and then made her a little better.
It had to be Irene’s new tenant. Blaine knew every good-looking woman within fifty miles, and he had never seen this one before. He had the most absurd desire to touch her, even as his brain warned him it would be a terrible idea. A woman this beautiful was always bad news. An exterior that nice usually hid something nasty underneath.
Janey walked up to her. “Would you like a table, ma’am?”
An instant of frown crossed the stranger’s face. “A seat at the counter’s fine. Thank you.”
“That’s her,” Irene said, swallowing a bite of her burger. “Catherine.”
Blaine rolled the name on his tongue. It was as regal as the woman.
“Hey, Catherine,” Irene called out, waving.
Catherine’s eyes zeroed in on her, then moved to Blaine. The impact of her gaze hit him like a boxer’s punch.
She made her way across the bar, seemingly oblivious to the stares she was getting, and took the stool next to Irene. “I thought you’d go home.”
“Would have, normally, but I figured I’d treat myself. This here is Blaine. He owns the place.”
Catherine tilted her head and gave him a soft smile that revealed teeth as perfect as the rest of her. “Catherine. A pleasure.”
Her voice reminded Blaine of finely aged bourbon. “The pleasure’s mine. Welcome.”
“I’d like to see a menu if you don’t mind,” she said.
He handed her one. “Where are you from? California?” Something about her accent made him think of the golden state.
She regarded him over the menu for a moment. “No. I was born in Savannah.”

Laney Harris didn’t want to live in Fairy, Texas. When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that “boring” would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.
She was right. Boring took on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

Spotlight On A Community of Butterflies: Chrysalis, by Barbara Shoff
Back blurb
A Community of Butterflies: Chrysalis (Published by LilyBearHouse, LLC.)
On-again-off-again psychic Vay Armstrong has a plan to change the world. Following ten years of domestic violence and abuse, she struggles with post-traumatic stress, paranoia and an inability to trust others. Determined to escape her reclusive life, she enlists the help of other abuse survivors to create a utopian community within Jakesville, Oklahoma. Will Vay be able to overcome family opposition, a romantic entanglement and a homicidal stalker to make her vision a reality, or will her only reality be a cold hole in the ground?”
Excerpt
Her eyes flashed opened meeting darkness. She heard loud barking near her head, followed by the cracking retort of gunshots outside her window. Her desire to survive overpowered her exhaustion.
He was back.
Reaching across pillows she wrapped her two terriers in one arm. She rolled to the floor, her free hand grasping the .38 from her nightstand. Crouching, she scurried across the hall to her closet sanctuary. She shoved both pets into a single crate.
“Shhh,” she commanded. They obeyed.
Bracing herself against the wall, flipping the safety with her thumb, she waited.
Calls for help were useless. William was never there when law enforcement arrived. She’d remembered the officers’ whispers, “Paranoid. Delusional. Crazy.”
She made the decision.
Escape.
‘ … just when the caterpillar thought the world was over,
it became a butterfly … “
About the Author
Barbara Shoff began writing before she could write. At the age of five she would make up dialogue for her friends so they could perform plays. They charged a nickle a performance to “the old people” (parents and grandparents) in the neighborhood. The stage was a front porch with a blanket curtain.
Their group was quite successful which kept them in bubble gum and popsicles most summers.
In the 1980′s Barbara had a column in a small town Missouri newspaper. It was called, “BJ’s Corner.” She wrote it for free. She became serious about writing and began penning articles for several women’s magazines.
“I sold my first article for $25. I was so excited I screamed so loud you would have thought it was for 25 million. I have written brilliant ad copy as well as very dull assembly instruction manuals.”
Severely social media challenged two years ago, Barbara became the accidental Pundit on PolicyMic.
It was when she had her non-fiction expose’ complete and was looking for a publisher when Barbara decided it was high-time the old dog started learning new tricks.
As a survivor of domestic violence and abuse she wanted to give back to her community. “Social workers educating survivors living in a shelter about domestic violence and abuse is ass backwards. These women already know better than the social workers what happened. The ‘whys’ research is still sorting out. What survivors need to learn is how protect themselves and support themselves while they heal and transform into something stronger and more beautiful than they were before. To that purpose, I wrote a stalker thriller, A Community of Butterflies: Chrysalis as the first book in a trilogy.”
Barbara has picked every brain she could find to try to figure out about the ins and outs of developing a “platform” and how social media works for writers. She took a social media for dummies class at a local technology center. “I almost learned some things about Facebook. The next day they changed it.
“I hired a fifteen year old to teach me asking, how something was done. He would shrug his shoulders and say, ‘Dunno. Let’s try this. Nope, not that, Let’s try this.’ Fifty dollars later a light went on and I decided to try stuff on my own. I watched YouTube videos until my eyes crossed, took a spiral notebook full of notes and finally built a website.
“I am still learning. Now both books are published. I am signed up on almost every freaking social media site there is and am maybe, kinda, sorta getting an idea of how they possibly work. Mostly I’m praying Oprah or Ellen will ‘discover’ me and I can concentrate on writing my books and going to shelters giving chrysalis building lessons.
“Oh, yeah. In 2013 I was honored to be a member of the inaugural cast of Oklahoma City’s production of Listen to Your Mother. You can watch me on YouTube by searching, LTYM OKC Barbara Shoff.”

Excerpt:
We walked all the way to the end of the hall and Deirdre pulled a key out from between her breasts. She caught my look and said, “I don’t want it to be too easy to get to, pet.” Then she turned the key in the lock and opened the door on one of the most horrible scenes I could ever have imagined.
Malcolm’s completely naked body hung from chains against the back wall. His knees sagged so that his arms, stretched to their utmost, took most of his weight. His head drooped to one side. His eyes were closed; he didn’t try to see who had entered the room. I wasn’t sure he was even conscious.
The bed in the middle of the room was a tangle of sheets and blankets, all smeared with old bloodstains. The carpet under Malcolm’s body was also darkened with blood.
Worst of all were the wounds. His entire body was covered in bite marks. Big purple bruises spread out from the worst of them, painful looking quarter-inch puncture wounds, white and ragged around the edges. Several wounds ringed his nipples, another one punctured either side of his bellybutton. There was one particularly livid mark on his neck and what looked like the edges of another one on his inner thigh, though I couldn’t see it well enough to tell how bad it actually was. His wrists had been rubbed raw by the shackles holding him, and underneath the chains he was pale.

Union of Renegades Book Blast
Indie Fantasy for People Who Don’t Do What They’re Told
Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I is a free fantasy ebook worldwide. This week fantasy fans can sign up to receive a coupon to get The Goddess Queen: The Rys Chronicles Book II ebook for free. See details below.
About Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I
The epic begins as Dreibrand Veta and the conquering Horde of the Atrophane Empire reach a mythic Wilderness that beckons with a magical call to glory. But Onja, Queen of the rys, a race far more powerful than the greatest human state, guards this land. She has the power to imprison souls and her genocidal rage is legendary. Everything is at risk for her desperate enemies, the union of renegades.
Meet the Players – Insights into the Main Characters in Union of Renegades by Tracy Falbe
Dreibrand Veta is in his early 20s when the saga begins. He’s been fighting with the conquering horde of the Atrophane Empire for two years. He is a character born of my disgust with following rules and not getting what you want. He’s an ambitious person but he’s done some things he’s not proud of. When he finds out he’s not going to earn what he expects for his efforts, he makes a decision that will change his life and ultimately influence the history of his world.
Miranda represents a woman at the bottom deciding she’s not going to take it anymore. When I developed the heroine for Union of Renegades I very much did not want her to be an innocent young female. She came from the place inside me that weeps for the suffering and oppression faced by so many women in the world. When the story opens she is kept as a slave by an abusive master. She’s also the mother of two young children. Although she is a compassionate person there is an edge inside her sharpened by hard use.
Shan is a rys with immense magical powers. All rys possess magic but the elite among them are capable of battle magic, mind reading, healing, and even enslaving the souls of the dying. Shan is a young rys who wants to overthrow Onja who rules their race and the humans of the western tribal kingdoms. He abhors her wicked tyranny but to challenge her he must use his magic to kill, something his good heart has never allowed him to do before.
Onja is the Queen of the rys and the Goddess of the people. She has ruled for over two thousand years. Her character represents the status quo, the all-powerful always-been. She believes she has the right to rule because she made the world as it is. During her long reign she closed off her realm from the east with a haunted wilderness, but when a curious whim prompts her to let people through everything will change.

you find her working in her local library. Hailing from the culture filled state of Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans; she lives with her three Great Danes and four spunky mutts. Author: Melissa Toppen
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Grace Morgan is just like any other new college graduate. Driven, head strong, and full of life, or so that’s what she lets everyone think. But Grace is not the girl everyone believes her to be and she hasn’t been for years.
After losing her high school sweetheart in a tragic cliff diving accident her junior year of high school, Grace becomes a shadow of her former self. She hides behind her fake smile and her carefree attitude, not allowing even her closest friends and family to see the broken girl she has become. Crippled by loss and heartache, she doesn’t believe in love anymore, not in the way a normal twenty-two year old girl should.
But all of that is about to change…..
Zayne Evans is the one man that holds the power to bring Grace to her knees. Her older brother’s best friend, a successful entrepreneur and a known womanizer, Zayne may be beautiful and charming as hell, but he also has bad news written all over him. But that doesn’t stop Grace from wondering what it would be like to spend just one night with a man like Zayne. A man who is just as good as she is at hiding the real person beneath the mask.
What starts out as a rocky week vacation at her families Lake House, turns into the beginning of something neither of them is prepared for. After an intense week under the same roof, Grace is determined to walk away and never seen Zayne again. But fate has a different plan…..
Zayne is the one person that can see through Grace’s facade. Grace is the one woman who is not blinded by Zayne’s looks, money, or his untouchable persona. They challenge each other in a way that neither has been challenged before.
But what happens when the one person you know you need to resist is the only person that makes you feel alive? And what would you sacrifice to feel that way always?
